In today’s world all these folks got what they deserved. How did you deal growing up in an era where these kinds of people got away with it and it was all swept “under the rug”?

Hoo boy the stuff I witnessed when I was younger and worked in hospitality... It was so universal back then that women needed to have thick skins just to work as wait staff because they knew it wasn't a matter of if it would happen or when, but how often per shift.

It was indeed swept under the rug and never spoken of again. It wasn’t even an option to go to the police in case it cast shame on the family. We were kids who were powerless and silenced.
How did we deal with it? White knuckle it and secretly wrestle with the beasts it created, while trying to live our lives, bring up our children and protect them like we never were.
Now 50+ and still trying to quieten the beast it created through therapy and medication.
The sweeping it under the carpet fucked a lot of people up and continues to do so.

Lots of wrongdoers got caught and faced consequences when I was growing up; they just didn't receive as-pervasive coverage as the internet grants today. I'm not sure who 'got away with it' then wouldn't also have today.
