I'm assuming ID verification for the internet is in full force by now. How does it work? Did it result in use VPN by majority. Did people sgop using social media? Or did it go as the government planned?

There's no statistics on it so it's impossible to answer this factually, but from what I have heard anecdotally most people verified and some people started using a VPN. Not heard of anyone stopping using social media over it but a few people probably did
Derr_1@reddit
Fuck uploading my ID to a third party service. Bound to have some kind of data breach in the future.
yiddoboy@reddit
I've done it on certain sites using face scan. As I am considerably older than 18 this works fine and you don't need to give any personal data other than email address.
Eukonidor_Of_Arisia@reddit
Yeah, your face is on the facial recognition database now. You fell for it
yiddoboy@reddit
My face is already all over Facebook. What's the difference ?
Gisschace@reddit
Meta has been doing it for years, got people to tag themselves in.
Derr_1@reddit
Again, not really a fan of uploading my face scan to a random 3rd party service.
yiddoboy@reddit
What they gonna do with a picture of your face without even knowing your name ?
VolcanicBear@reddit
I understand your stance, but if you've ever had any pictures of you uploaded to any website by anyone, you're a bit late for that.

I stopped using Facebook and Instagram around the same time but it was because of changes they made to personal data usage. Iirc (but happy to be corrected if I'm misremembering), they made it so you have to pay to not have targeted ads. Companies taking away freedom of choice (or charging you for the privilege) over how data is used is gross.

I actually haven’t been asked anywhere to provide ID. I don’t use a VPN so I have no idea why. I was expecting too over the last few months but nothing
draenog_@reddit
Reddit silently filters out posts in SFW subreddits tagged as NSFW for users that haven't verified (or got a VPN), so a lot of people aren't aware that they're missing anything.
detinUi@reddit
You're obviously not watching enough porn
Specialist_Emu7274@reddit
No I don't watch any. But people got it on here apparently and I never have
PurpleOctopus6789@reddit
even reddit asks you if you try to enter certain subreddits. And I don't mean porn, I mean advice ones. It's ridicolous.
SeriousFortune1392@reddit
Yep, I cracked one of my tooth fillings, and wanted to know what to do in between having my appointment, and I couldn't access the dentist sub.
Specialist_Emu7274@reddit
Yea that's why I was expecting to get one! I don't think I have had the account anywhere near long enough for it to automatically assume my age either. It's weird. I have been on a few subreddits, think oh they're going to ask for sure, and they don't. I expect now I have commented to suddenly get a verification request though
Tonybham01@reddit
VPN doesn’t always work. A lot of people bought into it, only to find themselves barred from the sites they were trying to access because the site couldn’t verify which country the signal was coming from.
Derr_1@reddit
I've never had that issue
Tonybham01@reddit
Not everyone did.
PurpleOctopus6789@reddit
I will absolutely not provide my ID and have not done it for years (youtube implemented age checks years ago for some videos. I'd rather not watch than give them my data freely).
I will either use VPN or simply not access things. As for social media? Is age verification thing now? I did not know but I also don't really use social media unless you count reddit. If I have to use age verification to call my nan via messenger, they can fuck right off. Not happening. I'd rather pay roaming charges.
sadboy2k03@reddit
The advice from privacy advocates is to just use a respectable VPN (Mullvad, TorGuard). People should be aware that most VPNs are not trustworthy, especially ones you see on YouTube adverts like Proton, nord.
My educated opinion is that by design you can't have privacy preserving KYC processes.
By that you should assume anything submitted for KYC is public as these identity provider companies are massive targets for cyber attacks.
djwillis1121@reddit
I highly doubt a significant proportion of the population is using a VPN, in fact I doubt most people even know what a VPN is. I would imagine most people just did the verification
Polka_Tiger@reddit (OP)
Of course, all I'm hoping for is that they would have an idea of the general population, not be representatives of it themselves.
snavej1@reddit
Some websites brought in age verification but then other websites are set up with no age verification. It's like a game of Whack-a-Mole.
JoeDaStudd@reddit
It finally pushed me to get a VPN.
Your pre-verified with your ISP and mobile provider, but I'm not verifying using a 3rd party for any remotely adult site I go on.
Half of the subs on Reddit are flagged as adult even it's just the likes of WTF or publicfreakout.
It came in handy when we wanted to watch a show only available in the US or if your using a public WiFi with restrictions.
QueefInMyKisser@reddit
I’ve only been asked for age verification when I click on people’s reddit usernames by mistake
If any websites require it I’ll just stop using them but I don’t use social media anyway
WarlordTeias@reddit
I haven't really been affected by it in any meaningful way. Aside from the occasional sub or profile asking me to verify (Which I just ignore and move on), I've not noticed it.
I guess the only verification I have been asked for, was for Steam a few months ago, but that was just a Credit Card, which I already had on the account and it had just expired.
HawkwardGames@reddit
I’ve used a VPN for years and I’ll keep using one, but not to dodge ID checks or anything like that. It’s just something I’ve always used as a basic privacy habit.
