Is Australia Starting to Inspect Electric Bikes?

Hey everyone, are they actually inspecting e-bikes in Australia right now?
PuzzledActuator1@reddit
Sometimes police are inspecting them, but it's not common especially if you're riding within the law. You're more likely to get pinged in states where there's recently been additional law changes like NSW and WA so they can tell people look the changes are working.

I usually ride my e-bike at 25 km/h. Otherwise, it feels like running.
Beneficial-Sugar5116@reddit (OP)
Sometimes I even go up to 40 km/h,so the current laws are making me pretty worried.
cutsnek@reddit
Is your bike getting you to that speed without pedalling (throttle?) Which state are you in, laws vary state by state.
Beneficial-Sugar5116@reddit (OP)
It requires the throttle to reach that speed.
cutsnek@reddit
Yeah if your bike can get to 40km using the throttle it's going to get confiscated if the police catch you riding on public roads and bike paths.
Beneficial-Sugar5116@reddit (OP)
Yeah, so i am worry about it
cutsnek@reddit
I wouldn't be riding it in public, depending on what state you are in you could be fined for riding an unregistered vehicle and without a license depending on where you live.
They are really starting to crack down on these bikes especially if it's a dirt bike or fat tyre moped style.
dave-y0@reddit
Dont wheelie, ride like an idiot, ride too fast, making sure your always pedaling, you might be ok..
cutsnek@reddit
Riding on that type of bike in public is begging to be harassed by police. They know all of them are pretty much illegal. They want to get them off the roads, so no, it's not a case of it might be OK m
Beneficial-Sugar5116@reddit (OP)
Yeah, my ebike is fat tyre moped style.
PuzzledActuator1@reddit
What kind of bike is it? Have you considered just removing the throttle and setting a limiter? Then to be honest you'll likely be fine if it at least has pedals.
Beneficial-Sugar5116@reddit (OP)
My ebike is fat tyre moped style.
PuzzledActuator1@reddit
If it's like one of those super 76 Chinese clones it should have settings in the menu where you can make it legal.
cutsnek@reddit
Yeah the laws are changing to not allow this "one neat trick". They know software cloaking is common and will be tested for its max unlocked mode if caught riding in public spaces.
Beneficial-Sugar5116@reddit (OP)
police will test for its max unlocked mode?
cutsnek@reddit
Yes, they know about the hidden menus. If they can't check on the spot on certain states the they have the right to take the bike if they suspect it's not street legal.
Beneficial-Sugar5116@reddit (OP)
Thanks, bro
PuzzledActuator1@reddit
If you're truly concerned sell it to someone that doesn't care/isn't worried if they get caught and get something legal.
Beneficial-Sugar5116@reddit (OP)
Good idea! Thanks bro.
Beneficial-Sugar5116@reddit (OP)
Thanks,bro
Beneficial-Sugar5116@reddit (OP)
oh, it’s bad
Mythor@reddit
If you’re going that fast on the flat due to a lot of assistance you’re likely to get checked if the police see you and aren’t on the way to something more important.
Beneficial-Sugar5116@reddit (OP)
OK, I’ll be more careful when riding my bike.
Veggyhed@reddit
What are the basic restrictions in Australia with e-bikes?
dick_schidt@reddit
250w motor, 25 km/h max. speed with electric assist, motor must cut out at speeds above 25km/h, no throttle.
Veggyhed@reddit
So it's pretty much like the EU. That's a little rough. But then again, my bike has a 750-watt motor with a throttle, which I rarely use (if I use it at all). My average speed is around 15-16 miles per hour with pedaling. So I'm use my bike at your max speed limit.
Watching my output on my display when I'm carrying groceries in my pannier, I notice it is really nice to have more than 250 watts output.
PuzzledActuator1@reddit
It's a 250w continuous rating, not peak. I am assuming you're in the US where the rating system refers to peak power. For example, a 250w continuous rated avinox motor (seen on Amflow bikes) is 250w continuous rated, but peaks at 1000w+ so out legal here but don't meet the 750w peak power requirement for class 1 in the US unless it's set manually in the menu.
Fluid-Local-3572@reddit
Yeah the bloody moron politicians still have absolutely no idea how they work, saying they have cut the 500w to 250 in NSW so they can’t go over 25kph🤦
PuzzledActuator1@reddit
Main impact on those is the hub motors who don't have gears to use as a torque multiplier on a lot of the cheaper Chinese fat bikes, mid drive motors for the most part are unaffected.
Veggyhed@reddit
Yes, I'm in the U.S., and I understand now. Thank you.
PuzzledActuator1@reddit
EPAC standards. 250w continuous rated motor (note peak, can be a lot higher which is why avinox motors and Bosch motors etc are fine as they're 250w continuous rated) , throttle must cut out at 6km/h (basically just walking assistance), maximum assisted speed 25km/h.
Anything else is considered an unregistered motorbike.
cutsnek@reddit
Nearly every state has limits of 25 k/m for pedal assist, 6 k/m throttle. 250w max continuous power.
Some states are introducing seize and crush laws particularly to the fat tyre e-moto style bikes that are commonly posted on this sub.
Import bans are beginning for low quality e-bikes. A lot of retailers are putting these bikes on fire sale as they will be impossible to sell in the near future.
Some states are contemplating banning children under 16 from being allowed to ride ebikes etc.
Police are cracking down. You are asking to be harassed riding throttle ebikes on public roads.
Mythor@reddit
NSW Police at least have been checking a lot more bikes in places that are known for a lot of illegal/reckless ebike riding. If you don’t live in a crackdown area and ride sensibly you probably won’t be pulled over.
If your ebike is illegal don’t draw attention to yourself by riding like a dickhead. And if it’s affordable for you, start looking at legal options. Better to be a bit slower and ride worry-free. :)
Beneficial-Sugar5116@reddit (OP)
My ebike is probably not legal, so I need to be more careful when riding it.
