How long do you snooze for?
Posted by Hancri84@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 144 comments
I know I can't get up straight away in a morning. I need to be up for 6.15 each day. So I set my first alarm for half an hour before I want to get up (5.45) then snooze for 15 minutes (6.00) and then snooze again for another 15minutes (6.15) then finally getting up.
I find this the best way to come round. I feel like my first alarm breaks my deep sleep. Then I go into a medium sleep for 15 minutes. Then for the final part I'm half awake. So its not a massive shock.
Do people do the same? I feel like a mad person just writing this.
kbm79@reddit
Alarm is set for 4.50am. Then 15 min intervals. I finally get up just before 6.
Knowing i have at least another hour of sleep is gold.
Affectionate_You_858@reddit
But you lose an hour of good quality sleep? Insane behaviour
atimelyending@reddit
this is genuinely insane behaviour
KarlMcr@reddit
I use sleep cycle app... It gives you a 30min window to wake you up. 630 alarm will go off between 6 and 630 when it's best.
Detects your movement and leaves you alone if no movement (deep sleep) and goes off if it detects movement and you're out of deep sleep which means you're less groggy.
Doesn't feel like an alarm that shakes you awake.
Force-Grand-2@reddit
Minimum 15 minutes. Doesn't matter what time I need to get up, I am not a "wake up and go" person. Getting up as soon as the alarm goes is how I end up slathering my face with conditioner and putting hand soap on my tooth brush.
AxeellYoung@reddit
I believe get up and go can be trained. Because i went through different times in my life where i was able to get up and go and then times where i wasn’t again. Now im getting back to get up and go.
topheavyhookjaws@reddit
Not sure if it counts as training it but back when I used to drink heavily most evenings, I loved a snooze for half an hour at least before finally getting up. Since I stopped that drinking habit years ago I get up straight away because I just feel so awake. To be fair, the more I've just gotten up, the easier it has become but as I'm saying I'm not sure if that's because I'm actively getting up or if it's just relative to how I used to feel
HankHippopopolous@reddit
I had a similar outcome when I quit drinking any caffeine.
I found without it I was sleeping way better and then when I woke up in the mornings I was refreshed and alert straight away. Before would be slow and groggy until I had that caffeine hit.
noodledoodledoo@reddit
If you've managed to train it please share the wisdom! I'm 30 and I've never managed it. The closest I've got is when running in the morning and laying out clothes the night before (so I don't actually have to brush teeth or shower, just literally put on clothes and go), then do all the "awake" stuff once the run is over. But I've always actively disliked running so that's never been sustainable either.

I need time to engage my brain and face the day. Sometimes it’s back to sleep and sometimes it’s just laying there pondering things
curled_frondwise@reddit
This is what I find, I feel genuinely terrible if I have to get straight up. Like a zombie. It's not even to do with my sleep cycle stage, i have the app that wakes me in light sleep anyway, I just have to be conscious for a while before functioning.
mainukfeed@reddit
1 hour no more no less. 15 minutes? doesn't really do much, just gets you groggy.
blinky84@reddit
I'm like you, waking up is a process.
If I get woken from a dream in particular, it's like my brain has to gather all its toys and put them away before it can manage boring things like hand-eye coordination or basic speech.
I'll happily sleep-talk to my partner in the morning, even after I've snoozed an alarm or two. Pretty sure an 'immediately awake' person wouldn't be offering you a Big Mac at 8am.
Affectionate_You_858@reddit
I don't, snoozing makes me sluggish. I have early nights and my body clock wakes me up before my alarm and I'm up. My alarm is set jsut in case but always for the time I need to be up
XharKhan@reddit
My alarm is set for 06:15...I'm generally staring at the ceiling wide awake, from around 05:00.
I'm in negative snooze by 1hr 15 minutes 😐
AutomaticInitiative@reddit
5 mins. I consider it waking up my mind and body separately. Anything more is just robbing sleep from yourself.
caspararemi@reddit
I might snooze it once for 9 minutes, but I know to get up when I need to.
But also if i wake up early within an hour or so of my alarm time, I know to just get up then instead of going back to sleep and feeling rubbish when my alarm does go off.
I used to prefer to sleep in and sleep past alarms all the time, but I think now I'm older I know it isn't worth the stress of rushing and being late just for a few minutes of being in bed. I'd rather be up and ready and make the most of my time and know I'll be more relaxed later.
SomchaiTheDog@reddit
I do similar. 5am alarm, 5:15 snooze Normally by then I need a wee anyway.
FloofyRaptor@reddit
I don't, never have. It takes me ages to go back to sleep so that 15 minutes is just going to be me staring at the ceiling pointlessly.
Vetni@reddit
Alarm at 5, brushing my teeth at 5.03. can't do it any other way otherwise I'll be alarm at 5, brushing my teeth at 7.58 lol
Mojofilter9@reddit
I set 2 alarms - one with a gentle sound for 5 minutes before I need to get up and a 2nd that sounds more like an alarm for when I actually need to get up.
25 minutes extra sleep is objectively better for keeping you feeling better throughout the day + I don't find that getting out of bed is any easier regardless of how long the snooze period is.
Norsefire15@reddit
I’ll hit snooze every 15 mins for 2 hours on a day off.
bc4l_123@reddit
Why even set an alarm on a day off?
Norsefire15@reddit
Because Id sleep way too long. Even if I went to bed early the night before Id probably not wake until the afternoon. So I set alarms early to wake me, even though I’ll snooze them for a few hours. My sleeping habits are all to whack and always have been.
ddmf@reddit
If I snooze I feel worse - when my alarm goes off I need to get out of bed right away and start the day (the ddmf way)
PsychologicalDish430@reddit
I do this also, once out of bed I'm less tired then just getting straight up.
ShingledPringle@reddit
I don't, I have never taught my body the snooze button.
I once caught myself turning off my old alarm in a half asleep state, so needed to create boundaries.
ElectronUK@reddit
Mine really depends on how much sleep I’ve had, if I’ve had a ‘good nights sleep’ I tend to be able to get up on my first alarm, but if I’ve had a rocky nights sleep the extra 15 minutes seems to do wonders for me.
Morganx27@reddit
I have one of those alarms that makes you do maths to turn them off. I have one at 8:30, one at 10 to 9 and a "you're late, get up before anyone notices" alarm at 5 past 9.
realitycheck38@reddit
I do the same. Alarm goes off at 5.20am and I press snooze 4 times( 9 mins per snooze)In winter when it is dark I remotely turn the light on after the 1st snooze to help wake up as well.
Accomplished-Task324@reddit
Snooze ya loose.
18usernameslater@reddit
Do the people who use snooze not have partners, or do they both get up at exactly the same time or something? I can't imagine subjecting my husband to that, it just seems like it would be insanely rude.
Extreme-Dream-2759@reddit
For getting up for work early. I do not snooze.
I set my alarm for the last possible moment I need to get up, with the knowledge I need to get up NOW.
I do not waste an hour disturbing my sleep wth multple snooze alarms.
I would rather have this hour for proper sleep.
AndyTheSane@reddit
I don't.. these days the hard part is staying asleep until the alarm goes off.
No-Piano5587@reddit
I’ve got alarms every 5 mins from 4:15am-5am for work, and it’s not for short bursts of 5 min sleeps, it’s more for a “it’s been 5 mins since the alarm went” so I don’t fall back asleep. But I like to lie in bed a little before actually getting up
FlatTyres@reddit
I need at least 4 alarms across an hour - sometimes across 2 hours. I apologies to every woman who has slept next to me on a work night any woman I hope to one day live with.
Example: need to leave for work at 08:30?
05:31 alarm
06:31 alarm
07:00 alarm
07:15 alarm
07:31 alarm
Drag myself to the bathroom for my morning business, shower and teeth brushing.
Rush out the door hungry.
If I set my alarm at 07:00 or 07:31 I'll oversleep.
Joshouken@reddit
20 mins usually, 2 x 10 mins
I have an office job and no kids so I’m not needing to squeeze good quality sleep out of every minute, this just feels least effort
kernowgringo@reddit
3x10 minutes, alarm set for 04:10, up at 04:40, out the door by 5. Free coffee at work and subsidised cheap breakfast buffet so I don't bother doing much at home.
Arbaces@reddit
Alarm set for 04:40 for the gym, I allow myself one snooze. If I snooze twice, I have to rush to get ready and pick my gym partner up, and I hate rushing to get somewhere.
Electronic_Amphibian@reddit
I honestly can't even remember when I last used an alarm. I work from home, have pretty flexible start times and naturally wake up around 7:30.
Dennyisthepisslord@reddit
Almost every time I wake up that's itm I am awake. Resulted in some 4am wake ups for me.
However today I woke up at 5am and specifically made myself try to go back to sleep and got another hour in.
Personally I think once you are awake you shouldn't usually fight it.
Extreme-Banana-9@reddit
I snooze a maximum 5 minutes then I'm up
JabbaTheHuttsCock@reddit
What works for you won’t work for others and vice versa. My snoozes vary depending on the day but I am fortunate enough to not have to set an alarm
MisterIndecisive@reddit
Every 5 mins for an hour. Sometimes I half wake up to change snooze to 15 mins
TheLoneEcho@reddit
Nah. Alarm goes off, I get up
zephyrmox@reddit
I don't. If I'm awake going back to sleep for 15mins will either not happen or make me feel worse.
TomfromLondon@reddit
Yeah I've always found it strange that people plan in hitting snooze, the thing I find really helps is light in the room, having light before the alarm really helps
missuseme@reddit
I don't even recall hitting snooze most of the time, i mostly do it subconsciously.
RegretEasy8846@reddit
I have neuro differences and I nap easy. Ideally usually 15mins, sometimes up to 30mins, it happens once most days and resets me nicely.
Existing_Doughnut985@reddit

Kinreal@reddit
I used to have alarms for 5:00, 5:08 and 5:16.
10 minutes was just long enough for me to fall back asleep so that's why I did 8 minute gaps.
So when I decided to bin off snooze alarms, I just used that one.

The_Sideboob_Hour@reddit
I like being a morning person. My alarm goes off at 5.30am, kettle is on at 5.31am.
Swimming_Possible_68@reddit
About 1 or 2 minutes.... I much prefer getting straight up.
My wife is like you.... Needs a good chunk of time to wake up.
Nothing wrong with either way, people are just built differently from each other!
I normally just end up reading on a weekend when my other half is still waking up.
Mind you, I guess if you do need a long time to wake up a job in something like the armed forces, or where you are on call, probably isn't wise!
wandergirl92@reddit
I have a sunrise alarm clock which has a 20 minute sunrise. 98% of the time I will wake up naturally before the alarm sound goes off and I get up straight away. Best thing I ever bought - no more waking up with a jump scare
RabbitRabbit77@reddit
I have one too. OP - this is what you should invest in. Absolute game changer. Most of the time you wake up before your alarm as the gentle light from the ‘sunrise’ will wake you. No more snoozing or grogginess
ScubaWitch@reddit
I don't use an alarm, haven't for years now. I use a white noise generator, it stops, I wake up. It bring you out of sleep slowly, not suddenly like an alarm. Definitely the best way to wake up calm and feel rested.
ShinyHeadedCook@reddit
Get up as soon as the alarm goes off! How do you benefit having 10 minutes extra
SightlessFive@reddit
Snoozing makes me feel awful and has the option to oversleep.
I just get up and get sorted now. Usually I’m awake as I need a wee anyway!
Obvious-Water569@reddit
This morning: way too long.
Normally I can get up pretty much straight away but I went to sleep later than normal last night and boy did I feel it this morning.
Spiritual_Long8806@reddit
I don’t because more often than not if i snooze I have a “false awakening” where I dream that I have got up and am doing my usual morning routine until things start to get weird - last time it happened everything was normal until my oven exploded but that still didn’t tip me off that it was a dream. A few other things happened but it ended with a random, massive, bearded man bursting through my front door and strangling me. I could actually feel the grip around my neck and felt that I couldn’t breathe. Then my alarm went off again and I woke up. It really set me up for a bad day
piggys_mumma23@reddit
I sleep with my curtains and windows open. Set my alarm for 15 minutes before I need to get up, so I can just lay in bed slowly coming alive for 15 minutes. I usually wake up before my alarm because of the natural alarm. I have been doing this for 7 months and feel better for it.
DogFoodManUK@reddit
I'm usually the type to get up straight away, but lately I have been snoozing a bit.
resident_queerdo@reddit
Do you find that this is because you're more exhausted or more relaxed?
I usually wake properly before first and second alarm (10 minutes apart), start checking my phone so I don't have to jump out of bed immediately (which I hate). But I've had times when I couldn't make it out of bed for an hour. That was when I was on the brink of burnout.
pgnlzbth@reddit
This is me, too. I used to be a chronic snoozer in my early 20’s. I had an old Sony clock radio and you could hit the button on the top and it’d snooze for 6 minutes. I used to have to do nearly an hour of this to get up! Now I’m up and out (usually 5am) but last few weeks I’ve needed to snooze it once or twice. Tired.
Chemical-Lettuce2497@reddit
I don't, always made me feel shit.
I started waking up at 6 everyday when I was 15/16 and I'm 33 now, haven't used an alarm is probably a decade.
My wake up times are about as close to clockwork as I imaging a meat bag is capable of
Clocks going back/forward does often throw me off a bit but weirdly not that much, I think the anxiety of knowing seems to get my body to wake up at the correct - ISH time.. actually kinda weird
Geezer-McGeezer@reddit
You snooze, you lose ! Apparently.
katie-kaboom@reddit
Almost never. I hate being woken by an alarm so fiercely that on the occasions I have to set one, I usually wake up five minutes before it goes off.
PolarLocalCallingSvc@reddit
I don't.
I have an alarm set for 6. Sometimes I wake up a bit early and just get up anyway. Otherwise I get up when the alarm goes off.
When I was younger I bought myself one of those loud bell alarm clocks and put it on the opposite side of my bedroom. This forced me to get up to turn it off, at which point I was like well I might as well just start the day. After a month or so I was just in the habit of a 6am start.
I am one of those annoying early morning people though. On camps I will be up at 6 putting the coffee and bacon on. But if we're doing a cottage away trip with a bunch of friends that also means I'll be that person up at 6 trying to stay quiet while taking the dog out for a poo.
New_Book131@reddit
I don’t snooze the alarm at all. First alarm goes off, I get up. I prefer a longer all in one sleep, and not a series of naps at the end of my sleep.
Asuperniceguy2@reddit
My toddler deals with my waking up very effectively.
Hypno_psych@reddit
There’s a few different sleep tracker apps that will monitor your sleep either through audio and movement checking or by linking to wearable tech that will wake you up when you’re closest to being awake (so in rem) within a half hour time range.
Try one of them and you’re likely to quit using the snooze button entirely, but you still may enjoy spending an extra 10-15 minutes snuggled into bed in the warm.
The app I used was Sleep Cycle
After a few years of using one of those alarms, and also prioritising going to bed early enough that I’m not chronically sleep deprived I consistently wake up well before my alarm pretty much every day.
fothergillfuckup@reddit
I have to get up at 5.18, at the absolute latest, so I set my alarm for 5.14. Any earlier and I just fall asleep again. I don't use snooze, as my wife doesn't have to get up until 6.30, and she really wouldn't appreciate multiple alarms!

I have an alarm on my phone for half an hour before I have to get up, but it's a Spotify alarm linked to a song I like. Half an hour later my clock across the room goes off. Again it's a nice alarm not a scary beep. If I only used phone alarms I wouldn't ever stop snoozing from bed.
Current_Fly9337@reddit
I have always been an early riser so whilst I set an alarm, I was always awake before it. Now I’m in the throes of perimenopause and my sleep schedule is taking a battering. If I can manage to get back to sleep after a period of being awake I need that alarm. I don’t snooze but I do sit up for 10 minutes or so and wait for my brain to kick in before actually getting out of bed.
Dry-Significance-271@reddit

For what it's worth I do set alarms every 5/10 minutes for over an hour after I'm aiming to get up because I'm so scared of sleeping in.

6.00am, then 6.15, 6.20, 6.30, 6.45 is the "You should be out of bed" alarm, 7.00 is the "You definitely should be out of bed and in the shower", 7.15 is "Are you ready to leave the house?" and 7.20 is the "You should have left" alarm.
The last two I generally hear when I'm in the shower, finally leaving the house by about 8.00 to get to work for... Erm, technically 8.00
jamnut@reddit
I don't usually, as I'm sure I read somewhere that if you snooze your alarm might go off during the worst part of the sleep cycle to wake up during. BUT if I do fancy a lazy morning, then I'll keep snoozing for 10 mins at a time and embrace the whacky dreams it always brings

I don't snooze as I sometimes press the wrong button and turn the alarm off by mistake, which means I overlay. I have two alarms set 15 mins apart. 10 mins is not enough. I struggle to get up on first alarm and can feel dizzy due to medication, the extra time helps me to come round slowly.

Not at all. If my alarm is set for 6:30, I'm getting up at 6:30. I wouldn't trust myself to press the right button just after waking up so falling asleep again is extremely risky in my mind.

I was like this in my twenties and thirties. Then I had kids. Now when I wake up, I’m instantly awake. It’s like my body’s forgotten how to snooze and wakes up ready for action - and they’re teens now so I don’t think it’s going to change back sadly. I miss snoozing

I used to set about three alarms spread out after snoozing the only one I used to set sometimes ended up not being a mere snooze at all 😅

The key to feeling fine when you wake up is waking up naturally in your lightest sleep.
If you feel groggy waking up, you've missed that window. It's not necessarily about sleeping more, it might be about sleeping less. It's worth experimenting to find your natural cycle.

I don't, I get up straight away. I think it's been proven that constantly snoozing makes you feel even more tired
