I think I remember saying metamucil and something else?
VGuyver@reddit
Yeah, it was metamucil mixed with ink. They had to use a hundred 100 gallons for the production or near that number.
OhNoIBoffedIt@reddit
Printer ink, specifically đ
Ob_sidian@reddit
My family was in the newspaper business most of my life growing up, my father ran a print shop and his work car and clothes perpetually smelled like ink. I donât want to even imagine the smell of that soup they put him in. The smell of that ink still makes me sick to this day.
Boxinggandhi@reddit
Itâs not surprising to me that so many people in the entertainment biz get weird diseases. So much of the makeup stuff is really bad for you.
nw342@reddit
You should learn about the wizard of oz filming. The first tin man actor was almost killed by the aluminum powder they were using to make him look metallic. He spent the rest of his life suffering from the effects.
VGuyver@reddit
Wizard of Oz is one. Another was when they painted the Tiger for the Beast Master film and it died from liver damage after ingesting the paint the used to turn it black.
Actually, now that I think about it. The industry was even more brutal decades ago. Off the top of my head.
1) Harold Loyd and his brother had both their hands mutilated by explosive stage props at seperate projects.
2) One lion got killed for real for a film and the actor actually stabbed the trained lion to death who thought it was just play time.
3) stunt pilot for Top Gun died performing the spinout stunt.
4) One stunt man rode a horse off a cliff, killing it for a black and white film.
5) the Three stooges suffered a number of injuries but they once refused a specific dog pile stunt on a football gag. Their stuntman head several broken ribs afterwards.
6) during one of the Punisher films, someone goofed up and swapped the callapsing prop knife for blunt knife. Said blunt knife was stabbed into wrestler Kevin Nash who didn't even notice he got stabbed with several inches of steel into his chest
ronlugge@reddit
Farscape: the blue makeup caused the actor for Zhaan to drop out due to heath issues.
VGuyver@reddit
Oh, that reminds me. Andromeda, actor playing the hairy alien had the same problem. He gradually developed allergies to his makeup.
The-Spirit-of-76@reddit
The Zathras makeup from Babylon 5 caused the actor to spawn 9 other Zathrases.
sjbluebirds@reddit
You're thinking Zathras. He's the one with the makeup issue. Zathras had the bad back and the problem sitting.
sg1rob@reddit
I am Zathras. He is Zathras. You see the difference?
ticonderoge@reddit
another Trek example is that William Shatner got a really bad lifelong case of tinnitus because a pyrotechnic went off too close, filming the Gorn mortar attack scene in Arena.
wjruffing@reddit
Another work hazard had to be the zipper on the Gorn costume
Siliconshaman1337@reddit
John Wayne, on the film Genghis Khan... they covered the lot with sand taken from downrange of the Nevada test site. 40% of the crew died of various cancers over the next ten years.
VGuyver@reddit
John Wayne cried about it on his death bed. Unfortunate for him, but he did go around destroying peoples lives just for the heck if it.
KassieMac@reddit
In the chariot racing scene in Ben Hur you can see someone falling off their chariot and being trampled to death by horses ⊠thatâs real. And they used it in the movie. Ben Hur is a snuff film đ€ą
Romulan-Jedi@reddit
That's... not true. There were very few injuries in Charlton Heston's Ben Hur, with most of them being sunburns. There was a fatal incident in the 1926 silent version, but not a trampling and it wasn't used in the film
https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/stuntman-death-in-ben-hur
KassieMac@reddit
Fair enough ⊠though Iâve heard Snopes itself has been debunked. Canât rely on anything anymore.
OhNoIBoffedIt@reddit
Oh don't be one of those. How exactly does a site that provides sources and evidence for all of its research that you can look up yourself get "debunked?"
Inside-Run785@reddit
You left out Twilight Zone: The Movie.
Dienoth@reddit
You can still find this footage online. Terrible to watch, the actor knew something was wrong and tried to protect those kids.

LabradorDeceiver@reddit

Shamanjoe@reddit
Itâs wasnât a blunt knife. It was supposed to have been swapped out for a collapsible knife, but wasnât, so he was stabbed with a real knife. And he definitely knew it, but he was such a professional he finished the scene before complaining..
LookAtMeTryingToHide@reddit
In Frank Capra's autobiography, he talked about making Dirigible (1931). To simulate a cold environment, they needed to see the actors' breaths. The props guys developed small metal cages to hold dry ice in their mouths. One actor was struggling with the cage because it was making him talk funny, and finally just tossed the dry ice into his mouth. He lost a good chunk of his tongue and jaw.
Legitimate_Lion_3575@reddit

That first tin man was Buddy Ebsen, well know for his role as Uncle Jed in The Beverly Hillbillies. It wasnât so much that is was toxic as it was that he had a severe allergic reaction to the powder.
mb10240@reddit
Despite suffering effects from the makeup, Buddy Ebsen still managed to outlive everyone else from the movie, with the exception of a Munchkin.
Stargazer1701d@reddit
The original actress cast as the Wicked Witch had a severe reaction to the green paint and had to be re-cast.
houtex727@reddit
This is incorrect. She wasn't re-cast, but Margaret Hamilton did have to have a liquid diet to ensure she did NOT ingest the green copper based makeup, because it was indeed toxic. No actress would have a good time ingesting it.
She was then caught on fire while exiting down one of those trap door drops and had to recover from that, but recover she did and completed the movie. The harrowing tale is that when she caught on fire, and they put the fire out, they had to immediately scrub her skin where she was burned with alcohol to remove the green makeup lest it seep into her skin and disfigure her. She had second degree burns from the incident, and refused to do any other scene for the rest of her career if it involved fire.
You're probably conflating with Buddy Ebsen's exit because he DID get very sick from inhaling the silvery aluminium dust makeup they first used, and almost perished. He had to be replaced, he would not be able to make the film. They changed the makeup to be a paste, and recast the Tin Man with Jack Haley.
But if you listen closely, you can still hear Buddy when there's a group singing, specifically "We're Off To See The Wizard" group version. MGM chose to save money and not re-record some things with Jack's voice. So Buddy's still in the movie, just not seen.
/Movies had to learn unfortunate lessons. Lot of unknowns/ignorance/impatience/savings of costs happening back then... and even still today. :|
samuraijc13@reddit
Was she the one who also got set on fire because a trap door didnât open in time when she was making a smoky exit?

I thought you were going to talk about the fake snow being asbestos, but that story is more direct.
usabn@reddit
Buddy Ebsen was the first tin man that had to step away because of that. He said it felt like his lungs were coated in glue and that it felt like no oxygen was reaching them.

korar67@reddit
The industry in general is bad for your health. Jonathan Frakes got a back injury early in TNG and developed âThe Riker Maneuverâ to ease his back pain.
Gazdatronik@reddit
I wonder if the toilet in his house is 3 feet away from the back wall
PangolinMandolin@reddit
Even doing "normal" acting activities can end up affecting you for life. Im reading Alan Rickmans diaries and he got permanent hearing damage from a scene where he had to fall into a shallow puddle.
factoid_@reddit
It also would have been PRINTERS inkâŠas in what they loaded into printing presses by the gallon, not printer cartridge inkÂ
OhNoIBoffedIt@reddit
You are absolutely right, thank you for the correction. So newspaper ink, basically.
factoid_@reddit
Someone else said it was typewriter ink but I doubt it. Those were usually done with ribbons.
It would have been something they could conveniently buy in bulk liquid formÂ
bkinstle@reddit
