I actually found this kiss out of character for Xena. I do not see her allowing anyone to grab and kiss her like that unexpectedly. Someone would be getting the pinch.
MusicIsLife81@reddit
I don't. Xena had some sort of a trust with that character than she didn't with the others. They both had a secret that they were hiding from the others, Xena knew that she could trust her when she couldn't trust anyone else so she felt safe letting her guard down a bit more around her. Maybe she didn't expect THAT to happen, but Xena also knew that she wasn't in any danger from that contestant, she knew exactly why she was there and no other reason.
Chemical-Win-6036@reddit
And yet when Joxer pinched her bum due to a misunderstanding, she was ready to kill him. She knew him much better than a one episode character, and instead of asking what he was doing, she became violent.
MusicIsLife81@reddit
When Joxer grabbed her she was very much on guard with the whole situation. It was complete chaos around them. There was a kidnapped baby, two other Xena look-a-likes one causing quite a problem, and Joxer complicating things even more. By the time the kiss happened at the end of this episode, everything had resolved itself and Xena was able to relax some and have some fun. Besides we know they sadly are abusive to poor Joxer even though they say they love the guy, they take their aggression out him all the time. I think Xena punching Joxer was her way of taking out frustrations on him for getting in the way and complicating the mission because of his involvement with Meg.
Chemical-Win-6036@reddit
I don't fully agree, but I appreciate the nuance you share and how respectful you are to converse with. In retrospect, the Joxer abuse is horrible, especially considering his character arc and how much he did for them.
MusicIsLife81@reddit
It's okay that you don't agree. That's the beauty of this world and the Xena universe, we are free to agree to disagree. 😊 And I agree, the abuse of Joxer was just wrong with how loyal he was to them and everything he did for them.
And you are very much welcome. I will ALWAYS try to be respectful. I only turn disrespectful if someone repeatedly comes at me disrespectfully after I treat them with nothing but respect. I try to be a change in this world there is so much hatred and anger in it. That is what my grandmother taught me and isn't that what Xena is about in the first place? Try to have a good rest of your day and it was good conversing with you. 😊
Chemical-Win-6036@reddit
Thank you. You seem like a lovely person. Here's wishing you the best. Perhaps we'll speak about Xena again. Cheers!

Wise_Airport5655@reddit

Because the in the episode, the winner was actually a man disguised as a woman. It was Ancient Greek trans representation
Creed0831@reddit
I hope you are referring to the meta of how the execs and studio may have tried to frame it for censors. Because this is not a man disguised as a woman. The character is trans representation of a woman, not the disguise being a woman.
Less-Regret-819@reddit
I’m plainly referring to how the character in the show is a man disguised as a woman that wins the whole pageant. The episode even has Xena questioning him. Sorry my comment was so plain and direct that it went over your head. Maybe you could actually try watching the show?
Creed0831@reddit
The person is a trans woman. Trans women are not a disguise. It is who she is and living what is core to what is inside her. Trans women are women. A disguise or tricking others is a very bad representation of trans women.
Less-Regret-819@reddit
Ah, a metaphor that couldn’t be outright translated through 90s television. I see where you’re going.
Singing_Wolf@reddit
I think they thought that a kiss between women for comedic purposes would get by the censors because it was a joke, but a kiss between the leads meant they were lesbians.
I really wish things had been different then, the show would have been even more amazing without the homophobic constraints that were so typical in the 90s.
Chemical-Win-6036@reddit
I disagree. I love the ambiguity of the series. I also like that the show didn't resort to trashy sex scenes that made the actors uncomfortable like Game of Thrones.
Singing_Wolf@reddit
I wouldn't necessarily want it to be R rated, just more open about their relationship. And to not try to shoe horn in flings with men to satisfy the studio who wants them to be overtly heterosexual for cover.
But we can agree to disagree and both still love the show!
7Clarinetto9@reddit
I agree.
Ok_Kangaroo_2160@reddit
Yeah, they went out of their way to make sure Xena and Gabrielle did not both show up in the intro. Doing so would affirm that they were lesbians. Oh, the irony!
stardust102@reddit
Me to but the xena titles say her courage will change they world and I think they made major impact on homophobia views and I think that she did change the world
Singing_Wolf@reddit
Oh, absolutely! I think this show, and especially Lucy and Renee, did so much for gay visibility and acceptance.
Agent8699@reddit
For Miss Artiphys, sadly at the time, the studio would have argued that it was a kiss between a man (in a dress) and a woman, irrespective of how either Miss Artiphys was written or Karen Dior’s personal preferred gender identification.
For Aphrodite, they could easily argue that Aphrodite was “crazy” and not herself and also that Gabrielle did not reciprocate the kiss.
FirebirdWriter@reddit
Transphobia. At the time this wasn't seen as two women kissing by the majority of people but a man in a dress kissing Xena. One of the reasons this episode is important is it challenges that mindset and pushed for the change that people like me need. I'm not trans. I am a non binary entity that is also intersexed and that's part of the plot. I had never been able to see myself as potentially beautiful before.
The why sucks but also the episode existing wins
pastajewelry@reddit
In this case, those who have issues with Sapphic kisses would say it was between a man and a woman. And the Aphrodite kiss would've been written off due to Aphrodite being "under the influence." Very different than having the two leads of a show fall in love with each other on-screen.
7Clarinetto9@reddit
I wondered about those kisses as well. For Miss Artiphys I'm assuming that due to the character being trans (as well as actress Karen Dior, may she rest in peace) that, in people's minds, back then anyway, it didn't count and was meant to be funny. For Aphrodite I have no idea.

Shocked, then jealousy, so much jealousy. Her face always cracks me up
Ok_Kangaroo_2160@reddit
NOT the GRADUAL FROWN, she was so jelly! 😭
But, yeah, she was a little shocked at first.

Absolutely jealousy. No shame in that given how she feels.
She even got jealous over Joxer in "Lyre Lyre, Hearts on Fire".
