Arab tourist in Sarajevo

Hello everyone, I have a question. As a Bosnian living abroad, I’ve heard many family members and people online complaining about what Arabs are doing in Bosnia. My family tells me they are often rude, and some even come to Bosnia specifically to look for a 'white Muslim wife.' I’ve also read online that there are signs in Sarajevo written only in Arabic, making some locals feel like strangers in their own city. Is this actually true, or is it an exaggeration? And if it is true, how can the locals let this happen ?

It seems to me, as a Bosnian who lives here, that most commenting and voting here is by people who are neither Bosnians nor they live here.
I know several persons that worked up to covid as tanslators (English), drivers and gides for Arab tourists. It was mostly families with children and they were always on clasic tourism site seeing and simmilar activities. All of them made decent money while it lasted and noted that it was mostly local business that tried to extremely overcharge the services - not all but most of them. Arabs were generally just different with really small number of extremely nice or extremely rude people.
I personally saw them several times when visited tourist locations with my family and they looked as tourists to me just dressed differently. And yes, some business at those locations had signage and menus in Arabic - who could think about that.

Not Bosnia but I was in Montenegro, saw what I assume were woman covered a few of them And I asked a local what this? He said they get paid by certain countries to cover up. I know they’re Muslim in Balkans but my first time seeing them covered up when you only see their eyes. I live in the state and we have a huge Middle eastern population and your really don’t see them covered up like that here.
Appropriate-Ad5877@reddit
In Macedonia they get 300 euros per covered family member each month.
Sad-Management-1306@reddit
That’s insane. Who pays them?
gushi1-@reddit
I’m upset by the the ones taking the money. Wouldn’t be a first time I guess.
iheartloud420@reddit
In my city in central serbia gypsies are paid by islamic organizations to wear hijabs and muslim beards
tipoftheiceberg1234@reddit
Yes it’s true. Without sounding like Fox News or a right-wing nut, they are doing what people usually call “taking over”.
Many businesses on Ilidža as well as the east end of the city are owned and operated by Arabs from Saudi Arabia, Qatar etc… (although Turks also have considerable business there). They are everywhere in the city (especially during summer) and you can recognize them by their ostentatious religious clothing (no, not by their race. Sorry to the virtue signalers whose only argument that was against my point).
They do want a blond Bosnian wife. They do want to be able to engage in debauchery they can’t in their country without being shamed, ostracized, judged or just plain forbidden (think drinking, having sex).
And it’s solely the fault of the Bosniaks. Listen, Croatians and Serbian have their own faults in that country. They single-handedly sometimes stop it from progressing because of their own stubbornness. But this? This is exclusively the Bosniak’s fault.
And you shouldn’t let them live it down.

Let me tell you something… SEREŠ!
First of all officially number of tourists from arabs countries are not that high. They were not even in top 5 last year. But when you are racist shit of course you will see niqab and burka in tue crowd first.
They are tourists as any other coming to BiH, not great behaviour wise by general experience but nothing more than that.
But of course major problems is seeing more Muslims for some people here.
Ok-Connection-3856@reddit
Sorry to blow out your candle but its been an objective observation without any racial slurs or so. Racism is something else, snowflake...
As someone visiting regularly (particularly Sarajevo) and having lots of contacts and family, both on the Serb and Muslim side, i can tell you theyre all not so happy about the fact of foreigners dictating their everyday life. I mean in some malls & hotels you cant even get a proper beer. I mean wtf? That whole wahhabi thing never was a thing in the later history of BiH.
Go hang around at the airport in summer months, you will have the same experience. Even the workers at the airport were pretty annoyed by the behaviour of most of them and had to intervene at a regular basis.
Mii18@reddit
I mean wtf why every restaurant should serve a beer?
Active_Unit_9498@reddit
Because it’s Bosnia-Herzegovina a multiethnic country with its own history, traditions, and attitudes that shouldn’t cave to dickhead foreigners no matter where they come from.
Mii18@reddit
Agree and by that it means that there is a chance that owner of restaurant is Bosniak/Muslim and by islam it is forbidden also to serve alcohol. But I don’t want to go deeper into discussion I know that only acceptable muslim are those who are drinking, gambling and don’t go to the mosque.
Active_Unit_9498@reddit
Odakle si?
Ok-Connection-3856@reddit
I live in CH, born to parents from Jugoslavia, now Bosnia. Why do you ask?

Sarajevo.
Active_Unit_9498@reddit
Pricaj nasa onde gdje zivis u SJJ?
Ok-Connection-3856@reddit
Oh sorry, misunderstanding ♥️
Mii18@reddit
You know muslims/Bosniaks also live in Bosnia, right?
tipoftheiceberg1234@reddit
You do know Bosniaks drink alcohol and have sex and live a European/Slavic lifestyle?
At least they did until people like you started talking and ruined it for everyone. Who would want to associate with you and people like you? Who would want to say they’re from the same place?
No one. You ruined it. Bosnia and Herzegovina has become an embarrassment and a shell of what it was because of people like you.
And then to come in the comments and use such awful and such foul language to people and accuse them of all sorts of things just adds to the misfortune. Who raised you
Active_Unit_9498@reddit
Odakle si?
Ujemegaz@reddit
Yes. Imagine sitting in a nice place for a nice dinner out, and they tell you there is no beer.
Mii18@reddit
Imagine sitting in a vegan restaurant and ordering a beef steak. Then ranting about how it's stupid that every restaurant doesn't serve beef or maybe sitting in some regular Albanian restaurant and complaining why they don't have sushi.
anemonaeae@reddit
This is a false equivalence. Just stop it
Mii18@reddit
Why because you like beer or because it is related to muslim practices?
Ujemegaz@reddit
Indeed, imagine the dissapointment, that is what i already said.
shqiptarski1444@reddit
Every hotel should
Ok-Connection-3856@reddit
What do you mean?
The hotels and malls mentioned were not built / run by local bosnians but by arabs and its part of their policy 😅
Ujemegaz@reddit
Then, in a way, they are dictating their way of life. It is like the halal pizza here, but no one sits there and orders them while sitting in a coffee shop to watch football because they are cheap.
Ok-Connection-3856@reddit
Absolutely, agree, thats why i wrote it. Its a shitshow. But it is what it is. As long as they invest and people can get rich off of it, there wont be any change. Sacral Capitalism at its finest 🤣
Mii18@reddit
Why tho?
taraba707@reddit
"Raja" nestaje, drugim riječima.
tipoftheiceberg1234@reddit
That argument doesn’t work. I mean you can kick and scream as much as you want but you and I both know you’re trying to use a cheat code. How are you able to tell who is under the niqab? You can’t. That’s the whole point of it. Also, I never called anyone any names. What does that make you?
I didn’t even comment about tourism. That’s a whole separate issue. They own and operate businesses and properties in Bosnia. Thats no longer called a tourist. You aren’t aware, sir.
Fixed that for you.
Mii18@reddit
Why do you even care who is under niqab? We are paying police and other security departments to take control about that. You bring here some random shit which don’t have any solid ground but are more biased towards arabs, islam and so on. After that you are playing game innocent guy “I never called anyone any name”
Ok-Connection-3856@reddit
Yeah, you mean the police and departments that are well known for their independence, morals and integrity? 🤣
They let others slowl, but steadily their own way of life by looking away as long as the Euros are coming in... Its a fact and so obvious that good friends of mine that are quite religious but open minded muslims condemn it. I dont care what you believe and i respect you as long as you dont force your ways on me. This is the way.
Mii18@reddit
So you decide to take the law into your hands or what?
I don't force anyone. Everyone here is talking about some democracy and freedom of choice, but only if it's not related to Islam. Which little bit hypocritically.
Suddenly, you become Teheran if there is no alcohol in every corner.
Ok-Connection-3856@reddit
Its funny how you always manage to turn things the way it suits your point. I dont take law in my hand. But theres a pretty good reason states were prosperous under a secular rule. Its an anomality for the region that has a very elaborate drinking culture, even in muslim communities. And no, i dont think its a great thing (well it has its good sides too) and that alcohol should be promoted, but thats not the point.
Futhermore its damn malls, cafes, restaurants and hotels!
Ok-Connection-3856@reddit
Let me get an answer first if i may. Why do you even wear and see the niqab so regularly in Ssarahevo nowadays?
Mii18@reddit
You can see hijab regularly, niqab not so much. There is another misperception because it is easy to spot women with a niqab in the crowd.
Ok-Connection-3856@reddit
Well, its my experienced reality. In the past lets say 10 to 15 years the niqab is omnipresent. I dont know which part of Sarajevo you are usually wandering around, but theres tons of them in the main tourist streets, malls and god lets not talk about Ilidza.
Mii18@reddit
It is your subjective perception and I can't say anything more about it. I'm basically wandering around the whole city, and I'm pretty sure it is mostly exaggeration.
Active_Unit_9498@reddit
Suti mali every single Sarajlija will tell you the exact same story. They’re everywhere and they’re assholes.
tipoftheiceberg1234@reddit
I never called anyone any name, but you did.
Guess I’m not as angry as you
inferno66666@reddit
Not everything and everyone is racist if you don't agree with it
BabylonianWeeb@reddit
Could been worse like Zionist tourists
shqiptarski1444@reddit
Who in Bosnia has time to hate Zionists when they literally have to share a country with their enemies?
BabylonianWeeb@reddit
Everyone should Zionists for the Gazan genocide
Leiden-De-Beste@reddit
I understand where you're coming from, but people from BiH or the Balkans tend to not care about who's zionist or not because of unresolved issues there, they either hate each other (not sure if that's still true) or they just try to focus on living their best lives since the politicians won't change anytime soon. So they don't really have time or energy to hate every outsider.
To anyone reading this: Just correct me if I'm wrong, because I'm not from the Balkans lol
Substratas@reddit
Maybe you should go & preach about issues in the Middle East on r/AskMiddleEast ’cuz we have too many problems of our own to gaf about Israel & Gaza.
Ujemegaz@reddit
Our folk has a saying. I'd rather let the other's mf mother mourn than mine. Such is the situation in middle east.
Poglavnik_Majmuna01@reddit
Most Arabs I’ve seen in Sarajevo came with their whole family so idk if the “looking for wives” thing is necessarily true.
I haven’t seen any obvious bad behaviour but I wouldn’t be surprised if they are rude given my own experience living in the Arabian peninsula.
Ok_Tie_7564@reddit
They might be looking for additional wives.
Mediocre-Risk3581@reddit
You guys overestimate how many Muslims even have 2 wives let alone 3+ T-T. In my entire life I met like 3 or 4 people and 2 of them only married a 2nd wife because the first was infertile.
sashagaborekte@reddit
It must be very expensive

Was kids cheaper?

Misyar marriage or temporary mut'ah is definitely a thing though but they don't openly share it 😅
On-Fire31631@reddit
I don’t think they understand how much effort and money is required to maintain those wives. They think of it as having multiple casual girlfriends.

Big-Waltz5204@reddit
Don't live in Sarajevo or Bosnia but I was there once in this shopping mall and this Arab couple was full on arguing with their kids around. Or maybe it was just loud talking wanting to go to different places but what I noticed about Arab families specially rich ones, they seem loud and they walk around like it was built just for them. Not hating just kinda funny.
Ill-Benefit9962@reddit
Was there recently and this is true. Not to sound like an asshole but realistically Bosniaks are converted (mostly) Serbs so culturally have the same dynamics. Living under Yugoslavia and Christian styles governments for the last 150 brings certain expectations of behavior etc. since the 95 war ended bosniaks are rediscovering their faith, which when you take away the Christian buffers creates a pretty shitty/repressive society. This is the same reason Serbs and Croats want to go separately. During the ottoman rule Christians saw Islamic rule and don’t want to experience it. For bosniaks it wasn’t bad because ottomans gave privileges in a huge empire so you got to rule over you cousins and neighbors. This is the first time bosniaks are left alone with themselves and have to reconcile their Christian ancestry and new Islamic faith.
Substratas@reddit
Tall, white women are a highly valuable asset in those cultures.
No-Search3016@reddit
Considering women as objects, or even worse as “assets”, in 2026… How sad this world is.
Substratas@reddit
It really is.

I have seen a news segment about a whole street square being only in Arabic in Sarajevo, and people who have worked in hospitality there have told me that they are the worst guests.
Sarajevo is being advertised as "halal travel" even thought it's a Western European city with it's own beer brewery and girls who dress Western.
I wonder if these turists are being tricked. Either way there's nothing regular people can do about it.
meedmishmohd@reddit
As an arab i give you full authority to correct their behavior. Its unaccepted regardless of where it takes place. But the white wife thing.. I think thats a derogatory stereotype
PreWiBa@reddit
As always Guys here exaggerate, FGR in full mode
Its ok, they are there, but its mostly families and they are vacationing here and have their homes, its just like Germans in Croatia
Its just that Gumf Arabs are very easily noticeable in crowds
Mii18@reddit
Exactly this!

After the war Sarajevo become a shithole...before was one of the nicest citys in Balkan but now...😔
Separate_Trust_564@reddit
Yes, ever since the nice guy Milorad decided o take a sniper and shoot kids from the hills everything changed, I don't know why.
fraterperturabo@reddit
Sure buddy.. Its not sandzaklije at all ;)
Separate_Trust_564@reddit
Yes, Sandzaklije don't have the nice urban tradition of shooting kids with snipers and burning people alive. How sad.
PreWiBa@reddit
Well At least they have a better track record than the guys who were thwre before so...
cevapi-rakija-repeat@reddit
I don’t have much to say other than the few times I witnessed someone treat service staff extraordinarily rudely in Bosnia, it was Arabs.
DebtCollectorForMami@reddit
Arabs and Indians literally go to every country on the planet looking to find a place to shit
Mii18@reddit
Wait until you discover signs written in Arabic all around Austria. Exaggerating level max. Few years ago there is high percentage of tourists from Arabs countries and of course locals would use sings written in arabic to attract them. General feeling is that they are not great as visitors, behaviour wise. Honestly speaking never heard them looking for wife’s more for land to buy. Of course other two ethnic parts of BiH have panic attacks seeing anything related to Islam.
inferno66666@reddit
Last year i stopped in Klagenfurt and it filled like bosnian province 🤣🤣
Young_Owl99@reddit
I haven’t seen much when I visited but it was out of season so maybe that’s why.
