The Subaru X-100 Was The Plane-Shaped Car Designed To Cross The U.S. On A Single Tank Of Gas

I could drive cross country with a single tank of gas if my gas tank were larger.

An f150 with the stock 36ga tank already goes 680mi with no mods.
A 100ga tank in the bed weighing roughly 1000lbs would get you there with basically no mods required to the vehicle. And you could take 3-4 other people and some cargo with you too.

My Subaru Forester routinely gets 500 miles per 16 gallon tank before the gas light comes on. I don't need to tow anything and neither do most F150 drivers. It's all vanity and silliness.

Meanwhile my Subaru Ascent is sputtering from no fuel after 270 miles.
foulpudding@reddit
Yep.
My F150 Powerboost hybrid has gone about 800 miles on the regular sized (30.6 gallon) full tank and I regularly get highway mileage of about 26-27mpg in this full-sized, heavy-assed truck
Cross country is considered 2800-3000 mies. In my truck, a 100 gallon tank alone would almost do that distance if I feathered the gas and drove speeds for maximizing the mileage.
I just did the math, and if I put 18 full Jerrycans of gas in my truck bed. I’d have enough gas to go about 3000 miles. That number of cans would easily fit and I’d have capacity for about 900 pounds of additional cargo and passengers. Though I’d probably have to add some cans if I maxed it out.
I only own 4 jerrycans, who wants to help me out?

Man I wish my 94 f150 got that kind of mileage. Im happy when I hit 16.
foulpudding@reddit
Yeah, we purchased the Hybrid because it has a built-in 7.2KWh generator and can tow and then power a camper, but the mileage it gets while not towing anything is just amazing.
cloudubious@reddit
Nice. Im just happy Ol Pinky can still haul 2 cubic yards of mulch/soil in a load.

What would be the point of this, though? People need to pee.

I was thinking of the Soap Box Derby.

so many of us could be driving something like this and be happy, but people feel iniquity and have to drive around in battle tanks containing full living room sets

A single seater with no trunk or other other storage seems really impractical for most people. I guess something like this is fine if you never plan on picking up someone for a date or taking your kids to school and you never have to go grocery shopping. Honestly why not just get a motorcycle at that point?
Delphius1@reddit
tandem seating, and throw groceries in the rear seat, all problems solve until you go shopping at like Ikea or move an engine block
Saint_The_Stig@reddit
Shame in so many places you can't just ride a bike with the fear of being run over. Because it carries more stuff people and uses less fuel.
weirdoldhobo1978@reddit
If you need a car but you don't need a passenger seat or cargo space what you really need is better public transportation
Delphius1@reddit
I've been using my passenger and back seat as a cargo shelf since my divorce 2 years ago, I wish there was better public transit in my area even though my car costs nothing to run. I'd get a motorcycle if it wasn't a death sentence with SUV drivers

Hopefully the Aptera actually makes it...

Are they still trying?
ArchonStranger@reddit
Seems so, updates on their website this month.

I've heard some people have delivery dates this summer; I'm waiting for 600mi and AWD, so I'm still TBA.
Delphius1@reddit
all my hope for them went out the window years ago when they started going super 'Elon pay attention to me' on Twitter, well before the clusterfuck of what happened to Twitter. After decades of me hoping they succeed, I'm done with them, just get me a small plug in hybrid truck
snowpaxz@reddit
in hindsight I wonder if that was their desperate attempt to get him to buy them out. At least they get to go down in the history books as the first non-Tesla company to adopt NACS/Tesla charging, at least on paper
Delphius1@reddit
I mean, yeah, they were the first, I'm scared of their internal finances, because, oh fuck, just merge with Polaris already

spiritplumber@reddit
i actually painted that on the ceiling just inside my front door and it's amusing

I agree most could get by with smaller cars but there are very few people who could use this. Hell, most motorcycles can carry more groceries simply because you can ride wearing a backpack.
Delphius1@reddit
I've had my eye on a used Kaw (there's also a Royal that's so pretty) with a shit ton of saddle bags for awhile because I can throw bag of groceries in them, and then tkae the bike on like a week long ride with a ton of stuff, but shithead drivers in my area would make this even more dangerous vs my subcompact
RemarkableReturn8400@reddit
americans are larger, so small vehicles wont be comfortable.
Delphius1@reddit
can't tell if you're joking, I'm a 200 pound, sub 6 foot man who is of not the most healthy dimension, and I daily a 500e
