Local Coffee Shops
Posted by DoctorEthereal@reddit | Dallas | View on Reddit | 99 comments
Hi, all! I’m on the lookout for any good local coffee shops / cafes. I have a friend coming in to town that is big into coffee and it hit me that I don’t really know anywhere lmao. Bonus points if the place has vegan food options, but not required
(And yes, I’m willing to drive to Ft. Worth if it’s worth it)

Opening Bell Coffee
Kholvin@reddit
It may depend on what kind of coffee he is into. Is he into espresso, pour over, or looking for unique coffee drinks. I don't go to a lot of cafes, but I am big into pour over and a few of my favorite local roasters are Noble Coyote, Merit, Lemma and Oak Cliff Coffee Roasters. So anywhere those are served will generally be pretty good. I would love more recommendations of roasters if others have any.
musicd65@reddit
Full city rooster, wayward, west Davis coffee (it’s also a bakery)
K_Shock04@reddit
Cedric’s Coffee Truck!
mideon2000@reddit
I enjoyed the coffee at oak cliff bakery and ill be damned if it isn't the best bakery in the city in my humble opinion. Knock out 2 stones with one bird before the chickens hatch or whatever the saying is
John-3-30@reddit
I love Merit Coffee(Preston Hollow) and Ascension Coffee (has lots of elevated food options)
strawberryblushrose@reddit
If you’re in Oak Cliff, I’d also try:
Huitzitzilin Cafe on Jefferson—pretty new spot with delicious Mexican flavors
Everyday Works on Hampton—newish and also offers breakfast
Olmo Market on Edgefield—good coffee and matcha
I usually drink iced americanos, and judge a place purely on their espresso. These are all pretty solid spots.
Autumnfalcon1@reddit
Formatting is super weird but the check is coffee shop name and the bully’s are notes I personally made. The emojis are my own ranking system haha
Bodwest9@reddit
Ai goop
havronl@reddit
LOL -- AI is not anywhere close to this level yet
Autumnfalcon1@reddit
How do you figure?
BadLemur@reddit
Note that there are two Wayward locations. Based on your description you're talking about the Design District location. The original Davis Street location also has great plants, but a cozier vibe. Also a neat general store next door.
Chris4Hawks@reddit
State Street is closed btw 🥲
Autumnfalcon1@reddit
Ah beans. Did they permanently switch to the wine bar?
Chris4Hawks@reddit
What I heard is the wine bar ended their lease and opened their own coffee bar in the same corner. But I’ve had no interest in checking the new bar out because of how it went down
CandiceFit69@reddit
You should try Slow & Steady. Such a great little shop in Oak Cliff with knowledgeable baristas and chill vibes
Autumnfalcon1@reddit
Noted! Thank you for the rec 🙂
AR116@reddit
This is a nice list with good notes, but if OP’s friend is “big into coffee” meaning the actual coffee it won’t be much help
Autumnfalcon1@reddit
Hi, OP replied multiple times already and is very into the list. Thanks for the input 😊
AR116@reddit
No shade on your list! It’s nice and it seems OP is personally into it. I’m just suggesting that OP consider if their friend prioritizes the coffee vs. the overall vibe more
DoctorEthereal@reddit (OP)
Not sure why you’re getting downvoted here, this is an exhaustive list and I really appreciate it!!
Bodwest9@reddit
Houndstooth walnut hill and 75
Autumnfalcon1@reddit
Probably bc of the poor formatting which would also annoy me tbh. But this is an ongoing list I keep in my notes app and unfortunately it does not export well
DoctorEthereal@reddit (OP)
You are exactly the type of person I strive to be, I try to keep my list of good places to go straight in a list in my head and just forget them. I should start writing things down. What’s the ranking system in the emojis, btw? Is rainbow the highest? Is it based holistically on the entire experience?
Autumnfalcon1@reddit
Yep you nailed it. The less sun there is (cloud coverage) the lower it ranked on my rating. And it absolutely is based on total ambiance, not just quality of shot for an espresso. Sometimes someone wants a coffee rec where they stop in and out and get something strong enough to caffeinate an army, and sometimes someone wants a place where they can sit and read for awhile. I aim to be able to distinguish and tailor my recs based off what they want
4ofheartz@reddit
Love your list!! Any of these places serve bagels? 🥯 ☕️
Autumnfalcon1@reddit
I know a good amount of them serve pastries but I’m not sure that any have homemade bagels. If I’m in the mood for one, I either hit up Benny’s if I want a breakfast one, or starship if I just want a standalone. Sometimes I’ll brave shuggs but only if I’ve got the emotional energy for that crowd lol
4ofheartz@reddit
lol. Thank you. I need to do a Civil Pour & Starship run in the morning!! Have been to neither. Need to try Shuggs too. Your list is awesome 😎
Autumnfalcon1@reddit
Thank you for the kind words. Happy exploring!
DoctorEthereal@reddit (OP)
I am ABSOLUTELY an ambience type of person. I love going to a place and getting something I couldn’t get anywhere else, be it in the actual coffee or in the location itself. I think you and I have a lot in common here haha
Autumnfalcon1@reddit
Especially if you play MTG still, I’m actually an MTG judge 🙂
DoctorEthereal@reddit (OP)
Yeah, I’ve been playing pretty consistently for about a decade now (Jesus Christ I haven’t written it out like that yet) - I’ve thought about going the judge route since I’m usually the one my friends go to for rules questions but I just never knew the first steps, and these days I doubt it’d have the time
Autumnfalcon1@reddit
Feel free to DM me, and maybe we can jam some games over one of these coffee options!
brenddur@reddit
Noted for later 👀 Have you tried Soirée Coffee Bar in West Dallas? Great neighborhood vibes borderline jazz bar, very welcoming to POC and white ppl, not sure on LGBTQ inclusion
Autumnfalcon1@reddit
Oooh I have not thank you for the rec!
bellakupkake@reddit
Have you tried BerniBean?
Autumnfalcon1@reddit
I have, both locations actually I just didn’t get it on the list haha
LilAngelfxck@reddit
How do you feel about Triumph?
Autumnfalcon1@reddit
I remember their latte being suuuuper sweet and making a mental note to ask for half sweet. It’s a bit of a louder joint so not the best for studying but they share outside seating which is lovely
averydylan@reddit
Excellent list. Stupid Good is now closed but has been replaced by Deep Cuts Coffee. Its an 80s horror movie themed coffee place. Really good coffee and the owner is cool. A little pricey and the location is hard to get to but its worth checking out.
havronl@reddit
There have been some good coffee shops pop-up -- I am in Frisco/Plano area and have 2 favorites: Summer Moon and 151 coffee...
Alex_z33@reddit
LDU on Greenville!
enoughofordinary@reddit
I recently went to Dessert Avenue in Lewisville and had a carmel latte that was excellent. They have lots of little treats there. A bit pricey but it was really nice.
neonsadgirl@reddit
Leila Bakery & Cafe in Lakewood. The coffee is delicious and strong, and they have the yummiest, freshest baked goods.
MsMo999@reddit
For coffee & dessert (cakes, pies & cobblers) I like to do old style diner type places like Norma’s Cafe in Oak Cliff
FamousVegetable@reddit
LDU!
BadGolferDallas@reddit
I’m not a coffee snob by any means but LDU iced latte with almond milk is damn good.
P9613@reddit
Filtered in McKinney is also pretty good
Impossible-Hotel-293@reddit
Leila’s bakery in east dallas (not necessarily the best coffee but they have amazing baked goods). Also down the street is Jujus.
Cafe duro, killer joe, common good, ascension
P9613@reddit
There's a coffee event at Karmic grounds in Frisco on May 1st. https://www.instagram.com/p/DXLG1g1lkja/?igsh=MWFzaTRiem9qaDY1ZA==
Leader_Bud@reddit
I think with vegan options, I’d say Tribal. Wouldn’t be number on my coffee list, but if you’d like that…I think you’d be in love. There are also many other coffee shops and bookstores in walking distance.
Brassanthe@reddit
Ascension coffee in the Design District
almightymegala@reddit
killer joe off columbia.
Actual-Contract2128@reddit
Moon Wolf in Richardson just opened! Good folks happen to be my neighbors so give them a visit.
AlwaysMorePlants@reddit
Got a matcha latte from there the other day and I gotta say it was real good. Everyone does them super sweet these days. You could actually taste the macha.
crooke86@reddit
I'm excited to try there this weekend. Eiland and Starship Bagel as suppliers is a heavy boast.
Legovida8@reddit
Drip on Lovers Lane
Alternative_Tie4451@reddit
Triumphs in design district is top 3, don’t see it mentioned
innocuouseight@reddit
Triumphs for sure!
Signal-Slice-7522@reddit

innocuouseight@reddit
This! Used to work and hang out here, great spot and great coffee
CPLCraft@reddit
1418 Coffee in downtown Plano is good. Has great soft cookies among other pastries.
Not_Dana196@reddit
They also sell pie from Emporium Pies in Bishop Arts!
fleckspeck@reddit
Full City Rooster
HunterSuspicious371@reddit
Eiland is top roaster in the area and it’s not really close
AR116@reddit
If good coffee is a priority, I would recommend:
Houndstooth Wayward Coffee Merit (some variability across locations, but beans are legit) Pax & Beneficia
Also keep an eye on Kilo, opening soonish in Snider Plaza. I have high hopes they’re going to take specialty coffee in Dallas to new heights
mmaur@reddit
Native and Wayward
volkerer@reddit
Wayward looks good. I never make it to that part of town, but hopefully someday.
AR116@reddit
There are 2 locations. Oak Cliff and Design District
RyanWillisbeerbottle@reddit
Triumphs and Killer Joe
Goosimus-Maximus@reddit
Dark Ritual in Fate is my personal favorite!
jaytee61799@reddit
Each of these roasts their own or uses coffee from known local roasters…
Tre Stelle in far North Dallas Noble Coyote Cultivar Lemma (several suburb locations) Eiland 1418 Cliff Coffee Coffee del Rey
And if you want an absolute sleeper that people don’t mention but it’s great, go to Central Market in Plano. They roast their own coffee and have a coffee bar with several of their roasts available. $3 for a large and they give you a dollar off if you bring your own cup. They also have a prepared food section and a grill so you can eat there also. Central market has other locations also that might also have the coffee bar, I’m not as familiar, and if they do it’s gonna still be the coffee they roast in Plano because their only other location they roast at is in Austin. I’d assume other DFW locations just get the roasts from Plano so probably still real fresh.
ArrowTechIV@reddit
Why not try a Yemeni coffee place?
DoctorEthereal@reddit (OP)
I hadn't considered it before! What sets coffee from Yemen apart, in your opinion?
Rosie_Raccoon@reddit
Chimlanh - Vietnamese coffee in the Cedars.

Avoca Coffee
Flat Track Coffee
CowboyCryptid@reddit
Definitely check out La Casita, Cafe Meltie, or 1418!
La Casita has several locations but Richardson is my favorite. Personable baristas, great food options, plenty of parking, house made syrups, seasonal items, and dine-in seating. Not a traditional coffee shop because of its layout but they make a delicious cup of coffee!
Cafe Meltie is super new. Limited seating but it’s across a nice park. The shop is a local business with kind owners. Small food menu but high quality. They focus on their croissants/bread. Located in downtown Plano.
If you’re looking for a cozy, more traditional coffee shop then I’d recommend 1418 (also in downtown Plano). Cozy furniture and outdoor seating make it a great spot to relax. They serve pastries (pies, muffins, cookies) and hot sandwiches if you’re looking for a bite to eat.
Ok_Yesterday1370@reddit
Hit up triumphs for a jazzy whiskey experience and in house made every thing.
DaDidko@reddit
I have yet to have really good coffee in DFW, but Eiland in Richardson, Buon Giorno in Grapevine are among the places i like to go
volkerer@reddit
Have you tried Davis Street Espresso, Cultivar, Native, and/or Houndstooth? I haven't gotten out to try many of the "newer" places, but these are all pretty top notch from my experience.
DaDidko@reddit
I've only tried Houndstooth on that list, and the cappuccino is pretty good. I'll have to check out the others.
DoctorEthereal@reddit (OP)
This is why I love making posts like this, it gives recommendations to other people too
DaDidko@reddit
that's what local subreddits are all about :)

El Portón coffee
notadamnprincess@reddit
Halcyon on Greenville. Good coffee, nice brunch with a vegan menu, nice vibe.
brenddur@reddit
Soirée Coffee Bar in West Dallas. I stop here an embarrassing number of times when I stay at my sister's. I'm usually in yoga/workout stuff Sat am but it is on my list to dress cute and go to for brunch. They have live music and the food looks soooo good. Check the website (not just Google) bc they open in the evenings some days!!! Black owned business and seem to have an interest in community and being a third space 💜💜 Iced brown sugar latte (the Ella Fitzgerald) I literally said "oh my God" out loud on my way out the door when I grabbed it otw to work from my sister's. I am very glad it's very much out of the way from where I live bc I'd be there daily!
Fearless_Part_258@reddit
If you like a plain black coffee I recommend LDU.
That’s the only way I drink it so that’s as far as I can recommend.
The indoor ambience of the shop is okay, nothing super comfortable, but I’ve talked for hours in there because the cowboy cold brew is genuinely the best brew in the city.
jello87@reddit
Halcyon has an entire vegan menu
Tennisballwrangler@reddit
I’ve found my favorite coffee shops in the DFW area:
Bird Bakery Highland Park Village
Ascension Coffee (Several locations)
Buon Giorno Grapevine (bit of a drive from Dallas)
KONA Coffee (Frisco)
Pax & Beneficia Coffee (several locations)
Jewelry_girlie@reddit
Seconding Ascension - it’s the best!
AndMyHotPie@reddit
Second Houndstooth but will add Peace Middle East Cafe near UTD
shedoesntworkhere@reddit
Good Boy Cafe on Main St is great and has a vintage shop inside!
happierr_@reddit
La Casita Coffee (Richardson!! But there are other smaller locations)
The Berni Bean (Deep Ellum)
Killer Joe (east Dallas)
masterfulslacker@reddit
Coffee Cove in Las Colinas just opened up and has some good, albeit pricey brews.
