Who actually gets those train tickets the apps reccomend where you have an hours long change in the middle of the night?

There's no universe where staying in crewe station from 11pm to 6am is preferable to just spending a bit extra to get home before midnight

I grew up skint. When I was initially building my savings I would use stuff like this, Megabus, national express deals, 125cc motorbike (~100mpg), cycling in town etc to get around the country.
Later it was bangernomics with the cheapest car that has a fresh MoT and tyres.
Nowadays I am better off (a significant contributing factor being the money I invested back then) but I think in my economic group I am still pretty miserly e.g. I could afford a Porsche or whatever but just have a nice ish mid-tier car that does the job and still puts a smile on my face.

how did you learn to drive? I'm trying to get driving lessons but i can't afford them without going completely broke otherwise
Suitable-Tough5877@reddit
Not the middle of the night, but I always use the split my fare apps for train travel. It usually means an additional change and probably an extra hour or so to the whole journey. I'm not usually in a hurry.
LegendEater@reddit
They're made up of individual trains. Those trains are running regardless of the other train. You just so happen to be able to book this, rather than it being a recommended route.

Unless you don't have the extra money to spend?
Odd-Paramedic-3826@reddit (OP)
its a difference of a few pound at most. sometimes they're more expensive if you can believe it
loveyouronions@reddit
It’s useful to know in case getting to the change is helpful, for instance if you know someone at the change point or something

This is just a database finding a route no one has actually thought these are viable routes. There probably are a few people who are ok with putting their head down on a bench for a few hours
DameKumquat@reddit
Yeah, there are people who will think they can set off from A at 10pm and get to B that night, and these routes are basically telling them 'you could set off... but it's a bad idea.'
That said, spouse and I once got returns from Oxford to Edinburgh for £11 each. Direct up, one change back. 8.5 hours on one train, 4 hours at Carlisle on the way back. Compared to the coach, not a bad deal.
Gisschace@reddit
Yeah in the summer when you’re young, 4 hours on station platform is no biggy
DameKumquat@reddit
It wasn't great - nowhere was open selling food or drink - but we had friends with us.
Better than all the Sundays with changes at Crewe during the previous few years.
LordSwright@reddit
As someone from Crewe, I wouldn't do it.
rustynoodle3891@reddit
I changed trains at Crewe once, and I agree

I lived abroad, making wages significantly lower than the UK. When I’d come to visit my parents in Cornwall, from a London airport I’d take the cheapest coach or train going. It was never direct
3hrs, between 3am and 6am at Plymouth is not something I remember fondly
rustynoodle3891@reddit
I don't blame you, about ten years ago I used to go from London to Penzance. I think the cheapest ticket I ever got was £88.50 on the train. Direct from paddington.5 hours 5 minutes if I remember.
I didn't have time to mess about with anything that wasn't direct, I used to work constantly every day for 3/4 weeks to save up my days off to go down to Cornwall to see a girl I met. Was a waste of time!

Im now having flashbacks to being 16-19 putting this much energy and focus into getting laid. Even flew out to Lubeck Germany for a dancer I had a massive crush on. It was a lot cheaper then getting the train to anywhere in the UK too. How did trains get that expensive?!
rustynoodle3891@reddit
I'm guessing a dancer was very likely worthwhile at that age! Probably cheaper than the train for a flight too!
It was probably longer ago than than that, I met this girl at the Hilton Birmingham when she was at a comicon type thing and my flight had been diverted. I went to the bar for a few drinks and she basically latched on to me. Made slightly awkward in the morning as it was a big family holiday for my mum's 60th so dad was knocking on my hotel door in the morning saying we have to get to the airport and she was still in my bed!
Fun times, these days I might not even notice if everyone was naked when I walk to the shops lol

Those tickets are designed for just a small town girl (living in a lonely world) and a city boy (born and raised in south detroit)
Flaramon@reddit
Boat travellers :) I used to get those trains on my way back from the Isle of Man.

Rail and Sail?

Are you Tyson Fury?
Odd-Paramedic-3826@reddit (OP)
oh fair enough. I forgot you could get integrated boat/rail tickets

I've ended up "stranded" on train platforms waiting hours for the first train like that but never on purpose.
