You ran around an ascii dungeon looking like this: @ And fighting Orcs and whatnot?

ADOM !!!!
Yassssss
deagh@reddit
Nethack is another one of this type, I used to play that one a lot.
MajYoshi@reddit
I still pull out my Amiga some day just to play this one. Always loved when I was strong enough to take on Keystone Kops for the loot drops.
All my years of playing Rogues and I've yet to make it out of the dungeon with The Amulet of Yendor.

I really got into ADOM for a while in college. I never could beat it without save scumming.
The modern game that I feel most captures the spirit of roguelikes is Spelunky, at least in terms of the sheer amount of stupid ways to die.
DevolvingSpud@reddit
There are so many of these type of games out there now if you choose to dive back in. Modern roguelike games are everywhere.

Omg I haven't thought about that for a looong time! I had so much fun playing that on the Amiga!
BoredBSEE@reddit
Same! I used to play it at work in an emulator. Just a little window to pass the time while the compiler chugged away.
ReverieJack@reddit
Oh yes it was awesome. But watch out for the black mambas
aliethel@reddit
Yes. That’s what got me hooked. From there, to Angband, to Zangband, all the way to Frogcomposband.
SlowEmphasis3676@reddit
No
Immediate_Formal_252@reddit
Yep
abbot_x@reddit
Yes, it’s a good example of a roguelike.

We used to have that on one of the university VAX minicomputers when I was in school. It was a step up from the text-based games!
TiltedPlacitan@reddit
This is where I encountered it. VAX in let's say 1988.
ChanceTheGardenerrr@reddit
We had those vax computers @SUNY Potsdam. We used them for MUDs and internet relay chat.
ihatepickingnames_@reddit
I spent way too much time on internet relay chat! UW Seattle.
deagh@reddit
Oooo MUDs! I met my first spouse on a MUD.
Electrical_Lake3424@reddit
Yep, I played Moria a lot because it was the only game I had on my PC at the time.
Fresh_Salamander707@reddit
Was this the one that had a dragon that was about 3-4 characters stacked on top? I played the heck out of this, it ruled.
tindalos@reddit
I play it every few years since it was ported to Windows. I still remember the one time I killed the Balrog without cheating. Very fun and still is.
zhitman47@reddit
Oh yeesssss so happy you brought this up! They used to have it on the school server at my sister's high school and I'd have to dial in to the school server to connect and play the game!!! Don't pick up the phone aaaaahhhh!!
I found a very similar version that I played later on and it really took me back to those fun times love love that game!!
