ULPT Request: How to stop dog peeing on my walkway
Posted by Roonwogsamduff@reddit | UnethicalLifeProTips | View on Reddit | 73 comments
A person takes their nice dog to my front porch entrance daily to pee. The dog pees in the sidewalk right in front of my entrance. It's a condo. I finally saw them do it after several months. I also had poop right at the bottom of the steps a week ago. I asked them to please take their dog somewhere else and they said "this is her favorite spot." I can't think of any way to keep the dog away without hurting any animals, including humans. I plan to get a camera and report her to the HOA, but I don't know their address, yet.
Twitch-x@reddit
Ghost pepper flakes, out through the blender. The powder spread all around your property, but not on the sidewalk. Repeat regularly.
The dog will want to avoid your home very soon after.
MoggyBee@reddit
Nah, let’s not hurt the dog to teach her idiot owner a lesson, c’mon.
Tonkatte@reddit
Water on the ground and an electric fence hooked up?
I_Be_Strokin_it@reddit
Story time. My grandfather lived out in the country and the neighbor's dog would always piss on his morning paper. He rigged up a wire to a fence charger and wrapped the other end of wire around the newspaper and ran it back to the charger to complete the circuit. The dog only pissed on the newspaper once more time. lol.
Tonkatte@reddit
So it’s not just an urban legend. Good to know.
I_Be_Strokin_it@reddit
Nope. My grandfather was a quite a character.
Pomegranate_1328@reddit
Pee-rimiter is the funniest thing!!! LOL OMG
Flux_My_Capacitor@reddit
Next time it happens, start following the owner around. Start filming just as the dog starts peeing and then when the owner starts yelling at you for following them, explain that you’ve asked nicely many times to stop so you’ve decided to film them and put it on social media because maybe public shaming will work as asking nicely did not.
MotherOfAllPups6@reddit
Just spraya but of your favorite essential oil there, repeat daily until the dog finds a new favorite spot.
StrikeSea7638@reddit
Spray the owner with a water hose.
pennblogh@reddit
Chilli powder liberally sprinkled.
StrikeSea7638@reddit
This works too. I spread garlic powder around my house perimeter and yard to get rid of some pests.
gooeyjello@reddit
Garlic is toxic to dogs
StrikeSea7638@reddit
Off. I didn't know that..I was trying to get rid of some mice and lizards. I had to poison the moles.
TicketyB000@reddit
Motion detector sprinkler. I got an industrial one that is like a water cannon 👍
swakins@reddit
Take a daily leak on that step. Be the Alpha and mark your territory
iH8MotherTeresa@reddit
Pee on the dog top, just to be sure dominance is established.
Odd_Alps_7468@reddit
Sounds like the owner could use a hefty splash too while you're at it
iH8MotherTeresa@reddit
I like your mind

I read that dogs hate the smell of Pine Sol. So much so that they will not step on grass that has been sprayed with it because it gets on their paws. One woman posted (possibly here on Reddit?) that it was recommended to her because her neighbor would let their dog out the front door, it would come immediately to her front yard and do its business and they would call the dog back into their house but wouldn't pick up after the dog. So she put slightly deluted Pine Sol in a spray bottle and sprayed the perimeter of her lawn. The dog has not stepped on her grass since. It has to be re-applied after rain. Pine Sol is cheap (I think you can buy it in a dollar store) so may be worth a try.
KahurangiNZ@reddit
Any really strong scent - pine-sol, citrus, vinegar etc - can all act as a deterrent. Just make sure to pick something that's safe for the surface / area you're keeping the dog off - don't spray vinegar all over your lawn for example :-)
umanonion@reddit
as much fun as going the piss disk route might be, a liberal sprinkling of cayenne pepper applied regularly, especially after a rain, should solve the problem for you without inflicting any stink on yourself.
Had a neighbor's dog using my backyard as its personal lav until it got a snozz full of cayenne a few times... never had another dirty deposit.
NewNameAgainUhg@reddit
Do you know is that works for cats too? I am tired of cleaning others people's pet shit and I have a small child who likes to eat everything that doesn't run.
Ghahnima@reddit
It worked for me. I bought some dollar store peppercorns and sprinkled them under the tree that was being used by neighborhood cat. I refreshed after rain. It took a couple weeks but it worked
gooeyjello@reddit
Plant cat grass on the farthest borders. I've found that many won't go past that much after it grows.
banshithread@reddit
it does. put it in the grass.
Pomegranate_1328@reddit
Dogs are motivated on scent. You need to make them not like the area. Maybe spray mint oil there? It will smell very strong to the dog and bonus not like dog pee.
Also enzyme cleaning for the pee smells first. The dog calm smell his and other animals mark the spot.
Granadafan@reddit
Or pee on that spot yourself. Better yet, pee on a frisbee or old dish and stick it in the freezer until frozen. Remove and place on the dog’s pee spot
Background_Ad3973@reddit
First time I've seen the piss disk suggested for a dog
philatio11@reddit
And also the most relevant use of a piss disc I've seen. Might actually work and doesn't seem blatantly illegal in this case.
KahurangiNZ@reddit
If the dog knows and likes OP, it's quite likely to be a pee enticement ('I'm going to add my scent to my friend's scent') rather than a deterrent.
Gotta go with the Big Guns and douse the entire entranceway with a mix of Wolf, Coyote, Bear and Big Cat pee, which will deter not only the dog but the owner too, and door-to-door salespeople as an added bonus!
OP can use the urine mix to create a pee-rimeter around their property to keep the dog away entirely.
Odd_Alps_7468@reddit
Gotta fight piss with piss!
Pomegranate_1328@reddit
That might just work
Critical_Cat_8162@reddit
Motion detector water sprayer.
Odd_Alps_7468@reddit
Loaded up with hot fresh piss!
Pleasant-Regular6169@reddit
Cayenne pepper. Use a lot. Google how to make a spray.
Liquid Fence (see Amazon)
Create a cayenne piss disk and tie it to the dog's collar.
Drink five gallons of water, urinate on the owner and the dog next time they visit. Tell them they're your favorite.
Follow owner and dog, defacate on their stoop. Tell them it's your favorite spot.
Pick up dog poo, mush poo into vents of owner's favorite car.
Odd_Alps_7468@reddit
"Tell them they're your favorite." I love you, fellow human
prozak09@reddit
Good ole' Piss disk! A classic.
FreshwaterFryMom@reddit
cayenne piss disc. This is a new level.
Pleasant-Regular6169@reddit
Instruction unclear. Do I eat the cayenne before I produce the pee, or pee and sprinkle the pepper liberally.
vw_bugg@reddit
FreshwaterFryMom@reddit
yes
ajkimmins@reddit
Cheap Walmart Great value brand ground cayenne.... Sprinkle it liberally a bit before they usually get there😈
Paevatar@reddit
Tell them to find another favorite spot for Spot, or you will notify Animal Control.
Shame them. Put up a sign informing everyone in the neighborhood that these people bring their dog to pee on your front porch entrance. Describe them and their dog.
Can you set up an automatic motion activated sprinkler to soak them?
jooooooooooooose@reddit
if u threatened to me with Animal Control because my dog was taking a leak on the sidewalk youd need to also call an ambulance because I would probably die from laughter
Paevatar@reddit
One leak is no problem. If someone is doing this every day, it becomes an issue.
VixenTraffic@reddit
There is a urine repellant paint that you can use to paint your porch. I am sorry I don’t know the name of it but you should be able to look it up. It might be called anti pee.
What it does is similar to reflective paint. The same way reflective material reflects light back towards light, the paint, when peed on, redirects the pee back in the direct from where it came instead of just down to the ground.
This will make the dog, and potentially, the owner, soaked with pee, and they will not like it, so they will go elsewhere.
Opposite-Shower1190@reddit
They probably walk the same time every day. Put a sprinkler out. Make sure it covers the area that the dog pees.
jooooooooooooose@reddit
get over it, its the sidewalk? Crazy thing to get worked up about tbh
Shamus-McNasty@reddit
Follow them home and piss on their porch.
uktobar@reddit
If you break the owners legs, he'll have a hard time walking his dog.
Could also follow him home and pee on his house
brybry631@reddit
After the enzyme cleanse, sprinkle white pepper down around the area. Just a little so it won’t be his favorite spot. Repeat after a rain
gotchafaint@reddit
Take video and shame them on ring, next door, and the local Facebook group. Post flyers of shots from the video of them in the act with large lettering shaming them. Follow them to their home, note the address, and start dumping dog poop on their doorstep.
Quirky-Invite7664@reddit
Post on Nextdoor. The people on there are crazy, they’ll totally shame that person.
gotchafaint@reddit
When I moved to my area I hopped on next door and immediately noped out. I don’t need to know how much vitriol drives my neighbors.
Quirky-Invite7664@reddit
Me too! Not sure why it attracts so many crazies.
And it’s not just the vitriol, it’s the posts from people who are hyper vigilant and comment on everything. We have many hospitals, airports, and military bases nearby, yet every time a helicopter flies overhead multiple people post about it. (“Does anyone know what that helicopter was for?””Where were they headed?” “What’s going on???!!!”)
PtZamboat@reddit
I’m sure there’s some website where you can find a sound at 25,000 Hz. Humans can’t hear it but a dog will avoid the area. Record it and somehow place a small wireless speaker nearby and play it continuously. It sure as hell won’t be that dogs favorite spot anymore.
Raid__Zero@reddit
Most portable speakers cannot produce over 20khz
PtZamboat@reddit
The same type of speaker that’s used in those “Bark Off” units. Had to use one for an all day barker next door, boy did it work great
discoduck007@reddit
Moth ball flakes.
Rich_27-@reddit
Bleach.
Wash the area with bleach
Greenfireflygirl@reddit
Leave dog treats there. Dogs don't like to pee where they eat, the spot will still be a fave spot for the pup for a different reason but their owner will avoid the area convinced that you must have poisoned the treats.
banshithread@reddit
You also have to time it, otherwise you can attract other animals such as other dogs, cats, raccoons, and even foxes.
Bratchan@reddit
First get fox piss and spray it on their door.. got to share the love
Snag Nature's Miracle Enzymatic Formula and spray all over where the dog likes to spiss.. probably some other dog has pissed there as well and its a dog territory battle.
Motion trigger sprinkler might be helpful if you can have that here
banshithread@reddit
ps This does not work if it's a dog breed bred for hunting.
beachbum818@reddit
Motion sensor sprinklers. They're used to scare away deer.
yzerman88@reddit
Get that high pitched sound machine that only dogs can hear
Key-Candle8141@reddit
Wait with a hose to "clean it up" then.... blast em
It is your favourite porch afterall
WatchingTellyNow@reddit
Put up a sign, at eye level, that says, "You and your dog are being recorded as evidence for the HOA and local Facebook group. Take your dog elsewhere." Shame might get them to stop. You don't actually have to spend money on a camera if you don't want to, but it can be useful for amending the sign.
If you do get a camera, print out a picture of them and pin the picture up beside the sign, so they know they're the target of the sign. More shaming.
Change the sign to say, "The dog treats on this porch contain laxatives. Your dog will love them. Enjoy cleaning up the mess in your house." Leave regular dog treats that haven't been contaminated with anything, but they don't need to know that. As you say, your intention isn't to harm the dog.
Change the sign every few days, getting more unhinged each time, I'm sure you can use your imagination.
Get a very loud siren, horn, alarm or whatever, that you can control remotely. Whenever you see them there (on the camera you also install) then set off the alarm. It will soon not be the dog's favourite place, so the dog won't want to go anywhere near your porch.
Follow them home. Then you know where they live. Valuable information that you can use with any other remedies like HOA, Facebook, animal control, Jehovah's Witnesses, catalogues, or any of the myriad remedies you'll read about in this sub.
Imaginary-Angle-42@reddit
BS on “favorite spot.” Owner, be the owner and don’t let them pee there. Keep them moving so they can’t.
That’s what I do with my dog. Her favorite spot is in the grass right in front of our door. The grass there still hasn’t recovered from winter dark so I pull her past to the grass that is growing before we stop.
1badh0mbre@reddit
Get a scary motion activated Halloween prop.
jaymienicole@reddit
Awful! Hopefully someone has some good ideas
