What happened to this plane?

Is this just over time wear and tear? Looks like it’s been through a war zone.

ULCC flex/marketing. "We're so cheap we don't even think about paint"
planefan001@reddit
And isn’t Scoot technically owned by Singapore Airlines? Looks like they like to be on two extreme edges of the spectrum between ULCC and luxury.
Perth_R34@reddit
Scoot is the best low cost carrier I’ve ever travelled on, even better than some standard airlines.
Regularly use Scoot between Perth Australia and Singapore.
binaryoppositions@reddit
As LCCs go they're a good airline but pretty much every plane does look like shit.

Scoot happened, thanks for asking.

The size of that engine…good lord. Compared to the front nose one area it almost looks like it’s in front of the cone 😱
Blankok93@reddit
Same for a lot of new planes, you won’t believe how massive the A350 engines are, they’re basically the same size as those for the A380. I work on 737’s everyday and I’m still stunned about the 737 Max engine sizes.
The basic explanation is that the actual « engine » isn’t the whole size, the rest is the fans pushing more air ( but colder ) to generate more thrust for the same engine size.

Paint doesn’t like to stick to carbon fibre like it does to aluminium

As Qatar Airways had to learn when they used substandard paint, sued Airbus about it and got their whole order Airbus planes cancelled in retaliation. They later made up privately.

Adjutant_Reflex_@reddit
Paint cracking is a common issue on the 787s, haven’t seen it as much (or as bad as this one) on the fuselage. But it’s purely cosmetic and seeing as Scoot is a ULCC they’re not going to take it out of service early for a new paint job.
Gilleke_@reddit
well, technicaly is not "purely cosmetic" as CFRP can not be exposed to UV light
so you have to take action and cover exposed areas with hi-speed tape an perform repetitive inspections replacing tape if necesary
in fact, once CRRP is exposed and hi speed tape applied the issue is only getting worse, as each time you remove hi speed the exposed area is getting bigger and bigger...
microjetsetter@reddit
what is CFRP/ CRRP?
whowhatwherenow@reddit
Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic
Gilleke_@reddit
actually is not plastic, its a kind of polymeric resin
its a mix of liquid resin that penetrates carbon fibers and only need heat and vacuum to cure
whowhatwherenow@reddit
“Plastics are a wide range of synthetic or semisynthetic materials composed primarily of polymers.”
Same family.
nacho_breath@reddit
Doesn't matter, it's still called CFRP
Several-Eggplant4460@reddit
Well eventually you just cover the entire plane with speed tape and you'll have a new coating, who needs paint
Gilleke_@reddit
yup! just cover your lightweight state of the art carbon fiber body with some good old style aluminium
hahahaha
CardOk755@reddit

LowPomegranate225@reddit
Speed taper up!
prof-bunnies@reddit
As my a&p teacher said that looks like about 5 layers ( just under 500 mph). Most cesnsa, piper, money and beach will need 2-3 layers max on the piston aircraft.... He said it but only as a joke!
Tony_Three_Pies@reddit
It's not purely cosmetic on the composite airplanes. The paint helps protect the layers underneath, so having a bunch of it missing for a long time can be a problem. It's why you see so many 787 wings covered in speed tape.
It might just be an artifact of the picture but it looks like this plane has had some hasty, patchy repainting done.
plarah@reddit
I was flying on a Scoot 787 and I saw this, but I also see something that looked like a “gash” with no tape and it looked like chainmail
I’m guessing it’s still safe, but I’d never seen this before. And as a nervous flyer I had to distract myself to not think too much about it.
DogsOutTheWindow@reddit
Hard to tell from the quality of the photo but 787 paint peeling often has similar texture. IIRC it’s actually a mark off texture from the primer but it’s been a while since I worked on that project.
evarga@reddit
Is it just bare carbon fiber/CFRP? Looks like prep for a scarf repair, but customers should never see that.
kinkysubt@reddit
UV degradation can happen on exposed CFRP, how bad it is structurally I can’t say for sure, but I do know that it makes it much harder to keep the paint on once it happens.
ImissTBBT@reddit
A lot of flying. The airflow naturally takes it's toll on the paint. This one is likely due for an overhaul soonish.
CompetitiveLet7110@reddit
What the fuck is scoot up to gng I hate how they're a branch of my country's airline
Hfyvr1@reddit
After seeing more photos of multiple scoot aircraft and Latam, I wonder if being living in high heat or being repainted is high humidity locations is affecting the paint jobs. Seems coincidental since most of the 787’s operating for North American or European carrier don’t end up looking this bad.
ThoSt_@reddit
You should see the other plane… wow!

It was leased to an airline with little money or expertise to operate.

MonteyCarlos@reddit
Fun fact: It takes about 20 people somewhere between 15-20 days to strip and repaint a B787 (depends a bit on the variant and complexity of the livery). It's roughly 5,500-6,000 total hours of work and uses somewhere in the region of 650-750 litres of paint.
If you assume a daily EBIT margin of $75k and ferry flights either side of getting to the MRO, the downtime alone would cost the airline $1.75m just in lost EBIT. That doesnt account for the MRO, labour, materials and certification.
Repainting B787s is an expensive exercise and as others have correctly pointed out, due to the CFRP structure, it needs to be done very carefully as some of the paint and primer actually form part of the overall aircraft structure. If you strip too deep, it's a structural repairs as per the SRM.
jsdcasti@reddit
It’s due for a strip and repaint. Those section 41 on 787 needs to be strip and repaint due to UV damage.

I flew on a plane that looked like this once. It was delayed due to issues with the cabin's pressurization system. We then proceeded to have (what felt like at the time) a very steep descent through a storm, felt like I was floating in my seat.
I follow this subreddit because it's fascinating and has helped me get over my fear of flying, but I do always wonder about that one flight in particular and how paranoid I was.
