GM: we're rolling out monstrosities that cost an arm and a leg and no one wants them
Also GM: we're delaying the cheaper ones cuz no one wants EVs
Jabbles22@reddit
They need better marketing for EVs. The general public simply doesn't know enough about them. Give people a better idea about what they are like to actually own. Hype up the advantages, clear up the misunderstandings, be honest about the disadvantages. Yeah that last one is tough from a marketing standpoint but it needs to be done. Stuff like Technology connections does but in smaller bites.
AllTearGasNoBreaks@reddit
For most of us, the hassle of EVs isn't worth it yet. Most young people dont own a home, so they dont have access to at-home charging. The ones that do own a home dont want the hassle of installing a charger. Range anxiety is real. I WFH and only really drive to visit clients. Most of mine are 300 miles away, just because of how my territory is split. Driving there on one charge probably won't work. Can't charge at their business. It would be a pain. I get paid mileage. Not worth it.
purz@reddit
There’s definitely a lot of city people that don’t seem to understand range concerns or charging ability. I live in a pretty rural area and don’t own a house currently. Which pretty much makes it wayyyy more effort to own one. Add on top of that the compromises a lot of the trucks have. Like shorter beds (shorter than short beds) or much shorter range when towing etc. I’m also assuming battery life and range gets worse as it gets older too. My hybrid SUV has gone from ~41mpg to ~36mpg in 5 years of ownership.
Time-Maintenance2165@reddit
For those that live in a city and don't own a house, the cost of charging is a bigger issue than the range. Why go EV if its the same cost per mile as gas?
piddydb@reddit
Plus could be harder to even access charging infrastructure. If you have a house you can build a charger but if you have an apartment that’s not really up to you. It’s hard enough to find reasonably priced gas stations in a big city, good luck finding a charging station. And if you’re thinking you’ll leave the city center, ok, now you’re going to have to deal with that real world range that doesn’t affect gas vehicles in the same way.
Time-Maintenance2165@reddit
I feel like you're taking it a bit too far. It's not hard to find reasonably priced gas stations in a big city. Jor is it hard to find charging stations. It's that they'll end up costing the same amount.
I'm aligned on the range aspect though.
WhateverItTakes117@reddit
Hard disagree that "most" people wouldn't benefit from an EV. And for most people an ICE car is more hassle. Having to constantly make trips to fill up. Do oil changes, spark plugs, air filters, transmission fluid. That's just routine maintenance, not repairs. An EV is so much less hassle. And you do not need to install a charger at home. I do level 2 charging at home, and it just uses a dryer outlet. No charger install required. And I never have to deal with the hassle of gas stations, or maintenance. Just plug it in when I'm at home and never have to think about it.
Even for road trips between Orlando, Tallahassee, and Jacksonville, it's been great. Drive 2 hours, stop for 20 mins, hit the bathroom and snacks. Your done charging before you know it, and finish out the trip.
For cases like yours where you take lots of 300+ mile trips all the time, yeah gas is better, no doubt. But that's way more of a fringe case than just being a homeowner to charge at home. Most people aren't constantly making 300 mile trips.
I'd argue an EV is less hassle than ICE for most people. Just commuting and using it like the average car user. For those use cases, an EV is just flat out better. The pros outweigh the cons by a long ways.
That said you do have a point on certain use cases where ICE is still better. Extensive road tripping. Towing on longer distances (DC fast charging with a trailer is a nightmare). Motorsports (even in events that allow EVs, weight is an issue, as is charging, and only getting max performance at very high charge state), and sports cars (EVs may be faster in a straight line, and have brilliant throttle response, but it doesn't have the feeling of a manual. Let alone the noise, revs, smell of exhaust)
AllTearGasNoBreaks@reddit
Why are EV sales behind ICE if its a better fit for most?
WhateverItTakes117@reddit
Same reason pickups are huge sellers despite people never towing or hauling with them. They are a bad fit for what they actually use it for. But people "want" to daily drive an F250 to feel cool.
Range anxiety is a also huuuuge factor. People drive 25 miles a day but think they need a car with 500 miles of range.
Also lots of new car buyers are old. Unfortunately that's where most of the wealth is in the US. And they don't want to learn some new tech. Don't want to do something different from what they know. Can't really blame them. It just is what it is.
DaggumTarHeels@reddit
93% of new car buyers own their own home. Literally 93%.
Range anxiety is not real for 90% of drivers, who average around 30 miles of driving per day.
Installing a charger isn't necessary for most owners. 120v is enough for the majority of EV usage. And where it isn't, a 240v outlet isn't a major hassle.
enfuego138@reddit
No better marketing than $5.00 gas
Mimical@reddit
General public is terrified of range numbers and so manufacturers are pigeon holed into shoving massive batteries in them because 80% of the market has an aneurysm if they have less than 400 miles of range to drive 20 miles to work. Frankly the better way to go is just plain hybrids. Put gas and get better fuel economy, don't ever show them or give them an electric mode. Just hide it all in the background.
bmwkid@reddit
GM sells millions of Tahoe’s, Silverados and Escalades. I can see why they would think those would be their best sellers. The Hummer is basically a Silverado
But the people that drive massive 80K luxury SUVs probably aren’t too bothered by high gas prices
JediKnightaa@reddit
Don't they have an electric Silverado
popsicle_of_meat@reddit
Yeah. The Hummer EV and the Silverado EV share the platform, but beyond that there are numerous differences in pretty much every other aspect of the vehicles. They are not the same.
Thomas_633_Mk2@reddit
This article is about them delaying successors to their biggest trucks though
oneonus@reddit
How about some affordable EV Hatchbacks, Sedans and compact SUVs. BYD and Geely have some.
RousingRabble@reddit
I think they currently have the cheapest ev in america. Or did the leaf take that crown?
DaBanninator@reddit
The bolt is a tiny POS
WhateverItTakes117@reddit
The equinox EV is also affordable, but actually nice.
JediKnightaa@reddit
What people said about every compact car sold in the USA
DaBanninator@reddit
Good 👍
Popular_Broccoli133@reddit
EVs are ridiculously cheap here because they sell like crap. Anyone who says we need "EVEN CHEAPER" EVs is out of touch with reality.
Do you drive a bolt? If so, nice. If not, why?
PROfessorShred@reddit
I've literally considered buying a golf cart as an EV vehicle. I want something in the $5-10k range that can do like 30 miles in ev range. And I don't drive a Bolt but I do ride a Honda Grom. When I say cheap I want cheap.
triplevanos@reddit
Bolt EV. Equinox EV. Excellent value and quality cars
Thomas_633_Mk2@reddit
AN AMERICAN HAS FOUND OUT A SECOND EV COMPANY EXISTS IN CHINA, THIS IS NOT A DRILL
I would give you a serious answer but complaining the company making the cheapest EV in the US (that's one of the model types you asked for) isn't making cheap enough EVs is deeply unserious
Also you're complaining about this on an article about how they're putting less effort into big expensive and heavy EVs
InAHays@reddit
May I introduce you to the Chevy Bolt (literally the cheapest EV in the US) or the Chevy Equinox EV (the cheapest EV in the US with 300 miles of range).
Pad_TyTy@reddit
Yeah but besides two good examples
InAHays@reddit
There's also the Chevy Blazer EV and Cadillac Optiq slightly more up-market.
V8-Turbo-Hybrid@reddit
I’m so sorry, American car buyers don’t buy or WANT cheap affordable hatchbacks. The subcompact like Yairs, Fit, and Versa are gone from new car market in North America.
When you can buy a decent used Tesla 3/Y, why you would look under $20k BYD and Geely hatchbacks ? This’s what our American car market now.
hundredjono@reddit
The Northstar will return in Avengers: Doomsday /s
mada447@reddit
Oh so their EVs will be unreliable as the north stars?
A-VR-Enthusiast@reddit
Tbf, weren't the last gen Northstar actually pretty reliable? Like the main fault was just those head studs, and I think they fixed that issue on the last couple years the engine was in production.
piddydb@reddit
Shh you’re hurting the meme by being correct
hundredjono@reddit
Their EVs are more reliable than the Silverados with AFM
enfuego138@reddit
Northstar V8 engines were notoriously unreliable.
mada447@reddit
I know. I was making a joke with her quote.
Jabbles22@reddit
At least they won't bury the starter in an inaccessible place.
dont-YOLO-ragequit@reddit
Isn't the NorthStar a Caddy+Olds Technician's worst nightmare already?
PROfessorShred@reddit
There is a bright red Hummer EV pickup truck on a lot near me that's been sitting for over a year now. Can't get rid of the ones they've already made.
ThrowthisawayPA@reddit
It’s the dealers that want too much. Leases last year were so cheap.
Efficient_Cat9399@reddit
GM has been confused on it's EV strategy for a while now
the Crude oil Gepolitics might finally be the ultimate nudge
at the same it's imp to capture VOC on EV
and the site which does that best is CarPhd.co
hermitcraftfan135@reddit
Hopefully they don’t pull a GM and cancel the whole thing. I truly believe there’s a market for smaller, more affordable EV trucks
Dr__Nick@reddit
No, that would be coming out with a half baked car, making it really good over a few years just in time to cancel.
kstetter@reddit
With no advertisements the whole time, only for it to become a cult classic when they cancel it.
The Chevy SS and Pontiac G8 still cost the same as they did when they released, even with crazy high miles.
costafilh0@reddit
Who would have thought.
V8-Turbo-Hybrid@reddit
What can we expect ? There are no more EV incentives and supports, every thing is oil first now.
Can’t blame automakers slow down their EV effort, and I don’t believe Chinese automakers able to fix this problem if they come.
Combat_Wombat23@reddit
The Hummer’s run is getting shorter every generation
OkDirection8015@reddit
Northstar? That engine conjures up some good and bad memories haha.
