User or age verification will never happen in the US. It will kill internet traffic overnight, once it’s not anonymous it’s just a bunch of people just like in regular life, all the excitement is gone.

And yet we have the implementation in SystemD ready to go? Sure, it's just a bubble that you put whatever number in, but it should have never been implemented in the first place. That tells me age verification could be put in place.
jar36@reddit
that doesn't comply with the law tho
Ezmiller_2@reddit
Right. The law is stupid. Since when has Linux complied with the law? I'm not saying this as a hacker or pirate, but as a user of Linux.
dogman_35@reddit
Except that's literally not true. The vast majority of people using the internet now never even considered being anonymous online.
We live in a world where people will post themselves committing literal crimes with their full name and face plastered all over tiktok.
Like that stupid prank youtuber that just got arrested for yelling "he has a gun" in a crowded theater. And then just... posting the evidence online, as "content," which was then used to charge him.
The "excitement" comes from the dopamine rush of seeing a number go up on social media, and feeling like they're getting famous. Not from being some secret hidden face in a crowd.

You don’t get it. Social media is anonymous, you don’t know most peoples names except facebook. If someone commits a crime and the platform has their ID, it’s easy to charge them automatically
dogman_35@reddit
You're conflating the bad shit that could happen with people actually caring about that bad shit.
Having the option to be anonymous is not the same thing as most people actually being anonymous.
Most people are short sighted, and do not care enough to think that deeply about it. There are millions of people that already effectively doxing themselves online, putting their real face, name, city, etc, up on their socials. Those people won't really get the difference between, beyond it being vaguely annoying to put in their ID.

Most of the internet is bots
Bubbly_Style_8467@reddit
Like you?
ColbieSterling@reddit
Most people don't care. Most people are on social media.

Oh, BJ; glad I ran into you. What’s your schedule like these days?
I know you’ve been through some… stuff (my condolences about… Fergus? Wyatt? It’s early, sorry)
but we might need your help if this ID stuff goes sideways…
jar36@reddit
another that doesn't understand the law. they can't comply even if they wanted to
Radium@reddit
It's a bad idea. Stop them in their tracks.
pyotr_francois@reddit
Its all ...! How restrict childs to access internet? Step 1: Go to internet providers Step 2: Change terms. Restrict families with child. Step 3: No kid and their familt can access restricted content. Step 4: Better educated kids.
dswhite85@reddit
LMAO no one actually cares
grathontolarsdatarod@reddit
At least they are signaling that they will probably try in the future, probably.
TwiKing@reddit
Tl-dr: Nothing is happening.
