“Prepare now”, okay…. by doing what exactly?

Yup get those end of civilization underground bunkers fully stocked and ready to go rich people. The rest of us will work for our rich masters right up to the time they go in and slam the blast doors shut on their luxury bunkers, then we die like dogs in the street.

My understanding is that the vast majority of bunkers require an air supply. just sayin'

Not anymore. A nation is its corporations. Rollerball was prescient.

But for the average citizen you need to buffer your homes insulation, make a greenhouse that you can grow food in, learn to filter snowmelt for drinking. The UK is about to have an ice age
Kendac@reddit
So youre telling me our governments will save us?
Old_Toby2211@reddit
We need to stop depoliticising the environment. We need to accept that there is no hope in solving this in the current political and economic paradigm. Only then will people start taking this seriously, reject capitalism and demand systemic and meaningful change
fratticus_maximus@reddit
If only that could be. It's kind of hard when one political party consistently politicize everything as culture war, even things like a pandemic, vaccines, climate change, environmental degradation, fluoride, science in general, etc.
Old_Toby2211@reddit
Those parties won’t admit the severity of the issue because it’s not in their interest to. I’m not talking about the parties, they won’t move on it. I’m talking about the general population. Only then will people demand we take proper action.
FieldsofBlue@reddit
Well, in a healthy functioning community people would be banding together to pool resources and use those pooled resources to fund enhancing infrastructure. You know, to prepare for things like prolonged drought, rapid flooding, food production, and energy production. It's too bad we don't live in a healthy world where this sort of thing would be possible.
Barnacle_B0b@reddit
Can't form communities as easily now that anti-vaxxers, racists, and pedos feel safe to push their beliefs around in the open. Remember how during COVID there were MAGA people assaulting others just for wearing a mask in public?
Hard to form communities with those nutjobs lingering everywhere waiting to agtitate 3rd spaces.

AlwaysPissedOff59@reddit
Protecting solar arrays? I would assume that this would require some kind of metal roof, which would shade the panels... Egg-sized hail will destroy any glass that I can think of.
Germaine8@reddit
IMHO, what we do now is quite clear. We continue to resist and oppose the economic, political and social forces that continue to block meaningful efforts to deal with climate change. Right now in America, the impediment is Trump, MAGA politics and policy, pollute-for-profit businesses that have bought and corrupted the federal government in terms of taking climate change seriously.
What that means is that, shitty as the Dem Party is (and it really is shitty), we have to vote of Dems, or continue to play Russian Roulette with the climate. Those are the only two major choices I can see. I do not see any other choice that has a meaningful chance of making a difference for the better. Given the vast damage to government, society and commerce that Trump and MAGA politics and policy have caused, it could be already too late for anything we try to do to make a meaningful, useful difference. But, since we don't know that yet, continuing to fight for a better future is our only option.
Or, does my analysis miss the mark or overlook other options?

In the 70s the dimly lit store in the mall that sold shady stuff had a poster that read approximately:

lost_horizons@reddit
I'm almost to the point of resignation. Everything is so shitty in world economics and politics, so corrupt and evil, let that current stop and put a stop to us humans. The biosphere will take a hit but it'll recover in time. Any few people left, after the decimation, will be living simply and won't be a threat for... well, who knows, but that isn't our concern for us alive today.
Not like we get to choose. But it looks like business as usual out there, so, I guess, fuck it. We live in interesting times.
Phrainkee@reddit
The only issue is that the "few people left" are more than likely going to be these assholes who got us to this point i.e. billionaires destroying the environment for profit.
I'll admit it could get so bad even the billionaires in bunkers don't make it. But look at how the planet had a fraction of bounce back when COVID sort of slowed the pollution... Bunker up for a year or more (if they have the appropriate supplies) and then pop out to a venerable garden of Eden and get to rebuild how they see fit. It feels disgusting that the same people who ruined it are above the consequences of their actions...
Tearakan@reddit
Naw, those bunkers wont last a year. They'll be killing each other before then. The surviving places will be kinda like jackson on the last of us show. Hold outs in the far north or south with solid grasp of fundamental mechanics for farming and keeping some low technology stuff working.
Some cities might figure out large scale greenhouse farming and use a combo of solar plus heat based solar and some leftover nuke power.
hw999@reddit
Bunkers need to be staffed by people. people get hungry and jealous. id rather the astroid land on my head.
AsphaltSailor@reddit
I read somewhere here on reddit about some of the workers that built the bunkers and their security systems plan to go and take over the bunkers if/when shit hits the fan
UnicornFarts1111@reddit
Ending up with only 1 billion people would be a good thing for this planet. It sucks for all of us who will die (I'm sure I will not be among the survivors, due to age and health). Lots will die way before their time, and that really sucks, but for humanity to survive it probably needs to happen.
HolymakinawJoe@reddit
This is the best comment on here. So true.
delusionalbillsfan@reddit
This. In a full on cataclysmic scenario its more likely the "survivors" are random groups in the Steppes or Siberian wilderness. Not a big bunker with known coordinates that says "come and find me! I live here!"
digdog303@reddit
Yep, the ending of don't look up was fairly instructive on this point. Right before the bronterocs closed in, they had a quiet moment where they realized none of them knew how to do anything except tell other people what to do. That especially ain't gonna fly in a postcarbon cessscape.
audioen@reddit
I think that is simplistic way to look at it. The bunker is for nuclear war, I think. I give it about 2-3 years before U.S. is in nuclear war with China, and whatever is the result of this will be the world that the subsequent generations will inherit.
The resource wars have started, and they will get intense, as they are existential. Every method is on the table. Water is going away as rivers dry up, glaciers vanish, heat increases, arable farmland is degrading, drying, brining as we speak, and seas are pushing populations inwards, and general collapse in industrial production due to end of fossil fuel production looms within few short decades.
We are going to fight over who can get what remains, and we will be fighting each other over it like animals. Even animals do the same thing, when mortally threatened and without options -- self-preservation takes over, and they bare their fangs and claws, whatever they are, and fight for the chance to survive. This is what's left for us, as every year the world becomes materially poorer, the climate less hospitable, and our living habitats narrow from heat and the sea, and eventually all eyes turn towards the cooler strip of land circling the North pole, the last place on Earth where humans can live at relative comfort, and there is even industrially available resources to be mined after the ice is finally gone.
alphaxion@reddit
The thing to keep in mind is that most nuclear weapons these days are fusion bombs, not fission. radioactive fallout isn't that big a concern post bomb drop.
AlwaysPissedOff59@reddit
If you think that humans can live in the far north/sub-arctic, then you'll have to rethink that. No one can farm permafrost and once the prey animals have all been eaten, it's game over.
cracksandwich@reddit
We sure let them get away with a lot don’t we?
AlwaysPissedOff59@reddit
With no or far fewer humans there will be almost zero pollution particulates in the atmosphere which, IIRC, immediately ups the temp increase 1C. If by "Garden of Eden" you mean "hell" then you won't be wrong.
HomoExtinctisus@reddit
If there are humans alive after the great fall, I don't think it will be the ones who are the most dependant on high technology.
UnicornFarts1111@reddit
I think part of the survivors in the US will be the poor people in Appalachia and such. They are already used to living with so little and living off the land, they might have a better time in survival mode than people who have never hunted, trapped, or gathered food to survive.
I say this because one of my friends growing up was from WV and she said when they didn't have enough food, they would eat whatever it was their dad could kill.
Gryphon0468@reddit
Bingo, it's the people who are already closest to the bottom but still have natural resources around them, so desert people are probably fucked, if they've lost their nomadic knowledge, but yeah the high mountain people will be the best, or the sub tropic islands that don't get swallowed by the oceans.

I've hit an exceptional level of "Fuck it". I've just been hiking a lot and looking at the world around us while I can. Currently 86 miles into the Continental Divide Trail. The nature out here is dope, but even (perhaps especially) out here, there's some big problems. The snowpack is utterly a shitshow. I started the trail mid-April and likely won't need microspikes and my ice axe for Colorado. That DOES NOT HAPPEN. It's been pretty dry here, so I might have water in 14.4 miles tomorrow, but perhaps not, so I gotta bring enough for 27.4 miles tomorrow. Shit's a little wild.
froggyfox@reddit
That was a bit of a non sequitur, as the lack of water thing is unrelated to the snowpack shitshow. Ain't no water here normally. They got a good rain here in February, which is atypical for the Chihuahuan Desert. Hell, there ain't natural water sources here for the first 200 miles. It is pretty though. This is a sunrise over Mexico down in the bootheel. I'mma bit drunk. And not looking forward to my heavy pack tomorrow.

Yeah the Star Trek Earth came together as one, embraced socialism and ascended to the stars. They passed through the great filter.
IRL Earth surrendered to the billionaires, the stockholders, the warmongers and MIC. Humans will never stay as a few people living simply. Life doesn't work like that. FearMyCock@reddit (OP)
This is related to the concept of societal and environmental collapse because the AMOC acts as a "global conveyor belt" that moves heat and nutrients from the tropics to the Northern Hemisphere. If it stops, it would trigger a cascade of catastrophic shifts that could overwhelm the ability of nations to adapt.
Tearakan@reddit
So that would only affect the European winter. They'd still see blistering summers.
They'd just end up with more Canadian or northern US winters in most countries.
trivetsandcolanders@reddit
“An AMOC collapse would last for hundreds to thousands of years and have catastrophic consequences. It would send temperatures in northern Europe plummeting while southern Europe experiences extreme droughts. The sea level would rise along the northeast coast of North America. Disruption would spread across food webs and ecosystems in the ocean and on land — for example, the amount of land available for growing wheat and maize, which supply two-fifths of global calories, would be cut by more than half.”
I mean that sounds pretty bad
ItilityMSP@reddit
We would see supercells, probably year round, hyperequatorial climate greater than 50 C, exterme die off everywhere in the equatorial regions. Why heat would build up at the equators and no where to go, the arctic would begin to freeze again, and now you have cold fronts hiting heat, moisture so yes extreme weather events.
kitkats124@reddit
The arctic will not come back or “re-freeze.” BOE’s of increasing duration will be occurring regularly well before that, as we head towards +2°C in the 2030’s and +3°C avg by ~2050 along with Arctic amplification. Currently the AMOC is still active; but it has slowed by about 15% over the past few decades, with indications it will continue slowing over the coming decades and eventually collapse.
The rate of warming is currently +0.4°C-0.43°C per decade and accelerating. We’ve already passed +1.5°C as that was the global avg for 2023-2025.
There are multiple self reinforcing positive feedback loops setting into motion as we enter a state of runaway warming. The AMOC collapse will introduce more feedback loops and further accelerate global warming.
Greenland will be the new center of cold in the Northern Hemisphere, until that ice is gone as well.
ItilityMSP@reddit
This was in reference to AMOC collapse, and yes was speculation based on the incredible amount of energy, AMOC transport to the arctic. What state the world will be in is still speculative even for models.
Hilda-Ashe@reddit
What are the odds of the Earth getting its own Great Red Spot?
Tearakan@reddit
Oh yeah it would completely mess up their farming continent wide.
The sea rising because of that in north America is interesting. I didn't know that.
kilopeter@reddit
Why would the sea level rise from AMOC collapse be localized to the northeast coast of NA? And how large would this rise be?
Zalkenai@reddit
My layperson understanding is that AMOC actually keeps water away from the north east coast due to the current.
I can try to find the sources, but I believe this would end up with between 1.5 to 3 feet of sea level rise.
filmguy36@reddit
Also recent models show that the world wide impact would be devastating.
Because everything is interconnected, the other “conveyors” around the world will be directly affected as well.
Everyone rightly so freaks out about the effect the AMOC collapse will have on Europe but that’s only the beginning.
BusinessPurge@reddit
Well, 1/5 the global calories lost, better start making pills that satisfy hunger. All part of the plan.
trivetsandcolanders@reddit
Are you suggesting that the global elite invented Ozempic because they know that the AMOC collapse will reduce wheat yields? I wish they had that level of foresight lol but I’m pretty sure it’s just capitalism and modern medicine doing their thing

lowrads@reddit
It's rare that anyone presents an actual model for what happens with the current. There will still be a surplus of heat at the equator, even if the poles rapidly warm. The sum of the processes have to pursue an outcome that complies with a variational principle.
It's not just going to come to a standstill. Of course, it would be sufficiently disruptive for the process to simply become less organized.
There have been equuable periods of climate across latitudes in the geological record, but there's no way a stable form that resembles that outcome can result in human reference frames.
Mike-Banachek@reddit
They’re not gong to do anything, Americans will continue to buy oversized vehicles without a second thought.
ToiIetGhost@reddit
The people aren’t to blame. Manufacturers could’ve made electric cars years ago. They had the technology. Hell, didnt some guy invent a car that ran on water? And he died shortly thereafter?
I mean, I still dutifully recycle and would never buy a gas guzzler. But it’s corporations and the elites who cause the vast majority of pollution. Don’t fall for the propaganda that companies started shoving down our throats years ago, when they chided us to “do our part” to “make the earth greener” while they laughed at our stupidity and burned it all down.

Key-Cardiologist4293@reddit
Yeah talking about people who buys oversized vehicles doesn't even scratch the surface. People are quick to blame countries of wealth (I get it) but there are many government funded nations that are funded by a lot of nations.
I mean look at the Chinese fishing collation, look at Saudi Arabia that has current day slaves and refine/make a ton of oil. It's easy to dunk on one nation but once they have to see that all nations are doing it they lose hope and try to dog pile to remain hopeful.

They (the capitalist/Epstein class) are absolutely doing something.
In the face of rising energy scarcity, rising atmospheric CO2, rising sea temperatures, and on and on, the capitalist class hopes they'll be able to digitize their brains and achieve immortality of sorts. The jagged pill to swallow is that the plan does not include you or anyone you love or even know except in the capacity to either generate more profits for them or probably become fuel for their machines.

Did trump act to remove all those charging stations for electric vehicles.
If the gov. can subsidize Big Oil, it can subsidize alternative energy, to build the infrastructure that needs to exist, before people feel safe investing in a $50,000 electric vehicle.
Only, think about what that would do to oil prices. And, all trump's wealthy friends.
No, Democrats aren't the good guys, either. But, Biden put money into alternative energy, and trump's removing it.
There MUST be worse, less moral people in prison than trump. That's why they're in prison.
trickortreat89@reddit
I’m living in northern Scandinavia and this is something I’m thinking about A LOT how to deal with in my future. I’ve come to the conclusion that it doesn’t make sense for me to move country right now. I know this will be a big freaking problem, but it’s not because it will be easier everywhere else either. Here in northern Scandinavia it will just become extremely cold in winter and I don’t know how we will grow crops outside. But we are wealthy and at least one of the most technologically“advanced” and democratic places.
I really fear that if I tried to move further south, I would be in a tight competition with so many people all of a sudden.
Everyone’s gonna want to live in Central Europe, but there’s not gonna be room and ressources for everyone. They will focus on their own citizens first and foreigners won’t have the same options.
Other places on earth will start to also deeply struggle as AMOC collapses, it will create new unforeseen changes in global climate and weather patterns. I don’t think it’s better to be in an already hot place which can get really freaking hot and receive very extreme weather or prolonged drought all of a sudden.
So yeah… I think it’s gonna be the beginning of a long period of hardships. I know we can adapt because humans live basically everywhere and with nothing, so we will survive. But it won’t be pleasant. I already know this so just trying to find out how I can be in the most fortunate position possible for myself and my family.
fratticus_maximus@reddit
It doesn't hurt to maybe buy some land and/or a house in somewhere likely to be more amenable in Europe since you guys have legal status to do that. I'm not 100% sure where though. Mediterranean is going through it right now with heat but might get cooler with the AMOC disappearing.
As fascist as the US is and will be, I still think the American midwest is going to be well hedged against the future. Minnesota is practically Scandinavia lite, or as close as we're getting in the US.

It’s crucial for our further survival that we dismantle capitalism and focus on cooperation and community as a new sort of growth parameter. We can only survive through this if we fully concentrate on how to adapt to this new climate reality - together as a team. I mean people also live in Siberia and Greenland with similar climate as how it’s gonna be in Northern Europe once AMOC collapses. Adding to this, climate is still gonna be hotter even in these places than it is today, so there will be periods of warm weather where maybe it’s possible to grow something that can grow and become edible really fast. There’s no way we would all be able to become hunters and gathers.
I know it’s possible to survive in these areas, but we have to completely reinvent how we produce food and a lot of it will have to be indoors.
There’s a lot we need to do, but first of all everyone who lives in these places will have to freaking realize this is the direction we’re heading.

Get up. Shower. Get dressed. Work 8, 10, 12 hours, all so our collective annihilation comes just that much faster.
disharmony-hellride@reddit
It's totally going to suck when the world collapses and we're all at work, missing most of the action.
Thor4269@reddit
No, it's exactly within the time frame of "worst case scenarios" that were actually the most likely scenarios
But climate scientists were often told to make things seem less alarming or pessimistic and to use a "moderate" tone to prevent panic
Chance-Deer-7995@reddit
You can't prepare when pretending it doesn't exist. Anything they don't like doesn't exist when it comes to the current "leaders" in government right now... the same people who were all about "fuck your feelings" in 2016.

i’ve personally prepared by doing some Swedish death cleaning. It’s very psychologically satisfying to give my possessions away to Goodwill.
HolymakinawJoe@reddit
Not sure how people are supposed to "prepare now" for something like this. The only thing I could think of is getting the fuck out of Europe before it happens. But I think the entire world is fucked from this and other impending climate catastrophes.

How unintelligent you would have to be to not understand 6 years is the blink of an eye when it comes to earth systems.

Trillions in resources getting poured into the middle east makes me think of that poignant scene in Game of Thrones. The captured wildling is watching the army march south and says something to the effect of "They're going the wrong way".
Wars are just hastening the end.
HateHumansLoveDogs@reddit
humans have warred with each other since the dawn of our species. We are a violent greedy species that should never have evolved.
silent-sight@reddit
There’s no way to prepare or mitigate for such a massive collapse of the environment. “Prepare” at this point means; have a contingency of closing borders and defend them due to mass migration across the globe. Think Tuvalu but all across the world.

Faster than we thought? Why, we've never heard that before.

This comment under the article: "more leftwing scientific propaganda". Science is propaganda. War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength. The 1984 playbook.
McGauth925@reddit
Far as I know, this is due to global warming.
You know, that science trump just doesn't believe in.
Lately, I keep thinking it's because he believes a lot more in the trillions still to be made from oil, if he can block alternative energy development sufficiently.
Hey, MAGAs: who do you think will be paying for those trillions in oil, if there's no alternative energy to compete, and lower prices? Remember when the orange one promised to lower prices?

He is literally the most delusional idiot on the planet right now, who somehow gained permission to become world dominant. How nice 👍

I like how the article takes special care to emphasise that variables are used in the models and they may be wrong and things might actually not as dire as the model shows.
Then just to be sure it goes and double taps the minimisation by ending on
...yeah cause these constant attempts to redirects to wish thinking are working out so well for our species.
Emotionally cushioning the news and outlook is emotionally crippling our response.

That’s just the news editor that needs to have this sentence, otherwise it would be “too depressing” and cause panic. 😱

I've ordered a rain barrel so I can collect water from my roof to water my veggie garden. If we get any rain. We've had basically no rain in Atlanta this spring, when usually we have a wet spring and dry summer. Massive drought incoming!

It’s nasty here in Colorado, too. Scary, actually. I miss the smell of rain. 😞

they won't tell us when it actually collapses, they'll wait for the big disaster and then the news will start diagramming a new weather model for us to understand. But I'm just a crazy person...

I appreciate sharing the results of the study and I agree the issue with AMOC is serious, but who needs to prepare actually? Ordinary people are powerless or have no idea what to do. Maybe this kind of stuff needs to be seen and addressed first by the leaders of the impacted regions.

StatementBot@reddit
The following submission statement was provided by /u/FearMyCock:
This is related to the concept of societal and environmental collapse because the AMOC acts as a "global conveyor belt" that moves heat and nutrients from the tropics to the Northern Hemisphere. If it stops, it would trigger a cascade of catastrophic shifts that could overwhelm the ability of nations to adapt.
