We should choose a different type of tree for Christmas. I'm a bit tired of pine every year.

It doesn't even have to be a tree. Maybe a big plant or a huge cactus? I'm not saying everyone should have the same thing either. You do you. I'm just a bit tired of pine.

I hang lights on my 12 foot tall fiddle leaf fig.

Here's a "Crazy Idea". Buy whatever kind of tree you want.
What do you care what the rest of us do?
There are already other people out there who use other types of trees.
But - practical consideration - when it comes to real trees, most deciduous trees look rather sad in the winter time,

Cedar!!!
Repel those bugs!

I use one of my houseplants every year

Go for it! You may start a new tradition

Why does it have to be a tree? I’d love to spend an evening with the family drinking cocoa and decorating the Christmas boulder

It's just really hard to get the bobbles to stick to the boulder

Yule let us know what you come up with as you continue your search fir the perfect tree, right?

We used potted live large woody plants several years. This year my wife found a pattern for a 2D tree shape made of fake garlands.

Has anybody ever considered aluminum?
Sorry-Climate-7982@reddit
Fir, Cedar, Spruce, Juniper, Redwood, Cypress. I'm sure one of them can satisfy Yew.

The larch.
donuttrackme@reddit
Maybe aluminum because of its high strength to weight ratio?

Growing up my mom had a potted palm (or something palm-adjacent) around 6' tall, and for several years we just decorated that instead of a conifer. It was pretty silly but it worked.

A traditional cone shape built from rigid programmable led strips. Hang shiny ornaments and top with a disco ball.

Have you considered a pole? It has a number of advantages and offers some opportunities for exciting new traditions. You don’t need to water a pole, and it doesn’t need much space. Post-holiday storage is a snap. During the holidays you can, for example, sit around the pike snd air your grievances or challenge your family to feats of strength. No decorations required.

I have an aluminum pole. Will that work?

You are free to do this - there is no law stating that you have to use a pine tree.
Straight_Mind_5192@reddit
Unlawful take.

My cat would have a harder time knocking down my Christmas cactus

If you're using a pine tree, you're already using one that's different. Fir trees are the most common Christmas tree as far as I know
PassionCandid9964@reddit
So get a new tree. You even said not everyone needs to do it. So do it.
Justadropinthesea@reddit
I never get pine. Always for of one sort or another.
HitPointGamer@reddit
As a kid I used to have a small potted grapefruit tree in my bedroom and I would decorate that at Christmastime. Poor thing was so sickly it never looked nice but I loved it. In case you are wondering, it looked sadder than Charlie Brown’s tree.
XROOR@reddit
The Christmas tree you display must directly correspond with the USDA hardiness zone you are located in…..
7a? - Norwich Pine
3a? - Eucalyptus
Mundane-Caregiver169@reddit
I will stick to tradition, I haven’t exhausted all the different fir tree varieties yet!
