Anyone else feel like getting a new job right now is nearly impossible?

Like you’re grinding away alone while everyone else seems to have it figured out.
I’ve been thinking about hosting something small in Dallas for people (mostly in their 20/30s) job searching. Could be coffee, could be dinner, nothing formal. Just real people talking openly and honestly about their search, sharing leads, and maybe making some friends in the process.
Would anyone actually come to something like this? Genuinely curious.
dessydes@reddit
It's actually the polar opposite for me. I left my job and then found myself in 40 interviews over the course of 6 weeks. It was actually exhausting but now I am Working for a great company.
InsectShort@reddit (OP)
40 interviews in 6 weeks, that's insane. Glad it worked out and you landed somewhere great! Curious what you think made the biggest difference for you?
dessydes@reddit
Networking, cold out reach, etc. here are some stats that were released by The job application platform Ashby last year. This was stuff I already knew but seeing the actual numbers Changed everything for me.
Where applications come from: 93.8% are cold inbound applies (applications and the spray-and-pray method). 4.8% are sourced by recruiters. 1% are referrals. 0.05%are internal candidates.
Now, let's look at who actually gets to Interview #1: Internal: 42% get the interview. Referrals: 40% get the interview. (Notice this? A referral puts you on an almost equal playing field as someone who already works inside the company!) Agency/Recruiter: 16% get the interview. Cold Applications: 3%. Read that again. 3%. If you make it past that interview, who actually gets the Job Offer? * Internal: 32% * Referrals: 16% * Agency/Recruiter: 8% * Cold Applies: 6%
What does this math actually mean for you? If your only strategy is hitting the "Easy Apply" button, you are doing exactly what 94% of people are doing to fight for a 3% chance at a first-round conversation. If you get a referral instead of cold applying, you are literally 15 times more likely to get the interview. And if you do get the interview, you are nearly 3 times more likely to actually land the job offer.
You have to start building your network, warming up your leads in the comments, getting in the DMs, and getting people to advocate for you in rooms you haven't even entered yet.
It's easy to want to ignore opinions but the facts and stats prove what method actually works and yields results that other paths just do not.
Cu77eR@reddit
I mean this sounds cool and all and iI consider myself a personable dude but I don't feel like many strangers who after a few cool chats are gonna be like "yeah man throw my name on the ref", people be crazy. But I agree that its all about who you know.
dessydes@reddit
I've helped several thousand people land jobs in tech doing just that. (I don't monetize it) If you have a cool chat and talk about Hockey, I agree with you. No one will refer you, but if you start out with Hockey, geek out with them, talk about a time you solved a problem, etc, you would be so surprised.
The idea isn't that they should have a good chat but it is so that they feel so confident about you that they can advocate for you in rooms you haven't even entered yet. That you would be that great coworker they would love to have and that you would get stuff done.
I'm seeing this happen weekly at the entry level positions all the way up to middle management.
swingsetmafia@reddit
Depends what sector. Tech sector is gonna be hard. this area has had a massive amount of H1B influx.
Practical-Entry2129@reddit
Try something new. Blaming on Indians is getting boring now. H1B’s are getting any new jobs either. When we get a resume that needs visa sponsorship, we just don’t pick it up!
TheDutchTexan@reddit
Dude, whenever I call some call center it's a Indian voice who can't speak English worth a damn. You can't tell me those jobs can't be done by people who already live here and/or came in on non H1B visas.
The fraud has been rampant and well documented. But sure, I guess I should just ignore it because it's racist to state the facts. Get over yourself.
The-Fiz@reddit
Go back to the Frisco subreddit
TheDutchTexan@reddit
Nah. Cry more.
xxsimplymani@reddit
a ton of those call centers aren't even located in the United States. you're more likely talking to someone who is actually in India than someone here.
TheDutchTexan@reddit
And the fraud continues.
Practical-Entry2129@reddit
You think those people choose to do that job forcibly? Hold the billionaires and corporations accountable! Stop this selective outrage.
swingsetmafia@reddit
Indians aren't the only ones getting H1Bs. nobody said the job problem is exclusively because of H1Bs but they do have an impact.
Boyhowdy107@reddit
Tech sector is also in a "wait and see" period. Some are actively downsizing, blaming it on AI (which I suspect is somewhat true and somewhat CEOs trying to frame their own bad decisions as them being on the cutting edge.) Those who haven't are deferring adding positions and even replacing departures because of general instability and wanting to see when the next AI shoe will drop.
Bionicarm88@reddit
Thank all the confused people with identy problems. This is making the hiring process longer and companies are hesitant to bring them into a culture. You are better getting referrals before applying.
extraathiccboii@reddit
I’ve been in the same situation, I’m in tech/cybersecurity and just got my azure 104 cert with my a+ and security+, literally nothing works lmao at this point panhandling makes more than a comp sci degree
zatchstar@reddit
My wife has been hunting for something new for a year now. She has a ton of experience but because she doesn’t have a bachelor’s degree these companies that screen resumes don’t even look at her experience; they just toss her out.
It’s brutal out there.
tinyplumb@reddit
That’s my situation as well. It seems like in this day and age, experience would trump schooling. I always say “if they’d only just talk to me…” But yeah it’s really discouraging because I’m a hard worker but I swear resumes are put through an AI screener that searches for key words. I thought about trying the method where you put buzzwords in ultra tiny white font somewhere on the resume because apparently it tricks any AI screener.
Cloudy_Automation@reddit
You almost have to make the resume match the job requisition, with the requisite keywords. Maybe use ChatGPT to take the job requisition and her experience to build a custom resume. They are using screening automation, two can play that game.
Those_Lingerers@reddit
I recommend the East Texas a&m competency based education path. They do 7 week terms online, each term is $1000 and you complete as many classes as you can in that time for one flat rate. I finished my bachelor's in less than a year for under $10k and it feels great to have that on my resume now. If that's her barrier to career growth, that might be a good option.
littlemachina@reddit
Damn I wish I knew about that a year ago. I’m doing the same thing through WGU and it’s great, but for some reason people get mad at the idea of competency structure and how cheap it is so they often reject/ignore applications specifically from WGU. At least if they see A&M they probably won’t even think to ask if you did non-traditional schooling.
Boyhowdy107@reddit
Hang in there. I supported my significant other for 13 months after she lost her job and she just started her new gig last week. She had a great resume, and I never thought her unemployment spell would last more than 3 months. It's brutal, but all it takes is one.
InsectShort@reddit (OP)
That’s really tough. I’ve been looking for a few months as well and have friends who are in the same boat. Is she applying mostly through job boards, or trying more direct outreach too?
narconaught5@reddit
This is due to the fact that DFW is flooded with H1B, nearly 100k are here which is severely impacting the job market.
MissYouDesertRat@reddit
Id probably try not to host something that costs money for people without jobs to attend.
GheistHund374@reddit
Hard reality? It's not worth the gas, and discord is easier. Going in person just to grip to each other sounds miserable. The market is shit because the country voted for doodoo sandwich, and everything was already circling the drain.
StrawberryHeart7102@reddit
Its very hard to get a decent job out here now these days, ive been searching for a bit.. Wtf?! Most places require a number of years of experience for the least paid job.. unless you go to school for it.. yet again, even degrees wont land you a job lately.. Whats happening to the world 🌎 😕
thetruckboy@reddit
Nope. I own a business and need to hire another handyman soon.
Never been a better time for someone to start a small business.
HockeyBikeBeer@reddit
Reddit hates people like you.
thetruckboy@reddit
Help me understand "people like you".
HockeyBikeBeer@reddit
Self made.
TheDutchTexan@reddit
LOOOL
He never said he was self made. He said he owns his own business. And that business relies on others to be successful. Anyone who tells people they are self made are liars.
thetruckboy@reddit
But what if I did start this business with $400 to my name and a $440/mo truck payment? I applied to 37 jobs and didn't hear a single thing back so I started a business "until you find a real job."- gf circa 2018, now wife and mother of 2.
Joke's on her. This is the realest job I've ever had. It bought our $500k house, bought and paid for 3 vehicles, vacations, Christmases, surgeries, deliveries, emergencies....
All because I got out there and got to work. Alot. 8 years in and I still love it. I still happily work 12-14 hour days to provide for my family.
TheDutchTexan@reddit
In the end it doesn't matter. Without the people who surround you, family and customers, you would have never made it. Sure, you put in the effort but without others believing in what you can do for them you'd be stuck in the water. There is no such thing as a self made man. Doesn't exist for you would be nowhere without others.
HockeyBikeBeer@reddit
Yeah, ok barrack
TheDutchTexan@reddit
Either way you want to spin it: You got served. Deal with your own inadequacies.
HockeyBikeBeer@reddit
No spin, just facts. Sorry that troubles you.

LOL, read my previous post. And blocked.

Good for them. I'm too busy to care.

My sweet and very capable friend has been searching since she lost her hr/payroll job nearly a year ago. She’s in her early 50’s. She’s extremely capable.

She's absolutely more than welcome. Feel free to share this google form with her. I'm hoping to coordinate something soon: https://forms.gle/5WLFo3AMGwirfJzt8
r_incognito_17@reddit
I mean. For people who are comfortable with ageism, I guess that is a cool idea.
InsectShort@reddit (OP)
Definitely didn't intend for this to feel exclusionary. I mentioned 20s/30s just because that’s been the group I’ve mostly heard from so far, but the goal is really just to create a space where people can talk honestly about the process and not go through it alone
sassy_meow@reddit
Let me know if you set this up! Would love for my husband to attend
InsectShort@reddit (OP)
I'm actually planning on it, would definitely love for him to join! I’m putting together a small, casual coffee meetup to start. Would you mind filling out this google form, or have him complete it so I can coordinate timing? https://forms.gle/5WLFo3AMGwirfJzt8
Hsensei@reddit
Nepotism or knowing someone is the only way right now. Get out and network, make friends.
TheDutchTexan@reddit
Nepotism is what every parent or friend who has the ability to do should do for their children / friends. It is not a bad thing and will never be a bad thing. Sure, looking from the outside you'll be pissed but imagine being a kid or friend of someone with a successful business and they just won't lift a finger to help you. That just flat out sucks.
It's who you know. And I will never begrudge people who help their own over strangers.
Brand_Newer_Guy25@reddit
Any tips on how to do this?
Hsensei@reddit
If you are young college, if you are old what the hell have you been doing your entire career?

Biden is the reason why the job market imploded. The graphs show it clear as day. But keep those blinders on.

Replace 'getting a new job' with 'getting laid'
Anxious-Economist-53@reddit
Been looking since January. Networking has yielded more results than indeed. I’m a felon so that’s definitely been a barrier for me. Looking mainly in sales since that’s where I have the most recent experience. Been trying to find something at a detox/rehab since I’m in recovery.
Acrobatic_Lake_5458@reddit
So, I have a theory that AI is basically ruining the internet and going to cause people to return to the pre internet days. In job hunts specifically, I’m very highly skilled and very niche in my industry so I can be that unicorn for specific job roles. I’ve been applying a lot online and the ATS definitely has a role in me not getting call backs as often as I should. I decided I’d print my resume and just run them into every business in my industry in person. Just a quick “hi, I’m new here and looking for some work that fits my skillset, I just wanted to drop off my resume!” And leave. Within one week I‘ve gotten a 100% response rate to this method. The internet is trash, seriously go in person if you’re able!
Shot_String1343@reddit
You just gotta know someone who knows someone to get a job nowadays
alphabet_sam@reddit
I haven’t had a lot of trouble getting interviews and leads on jobs, but interview processes are super slow and I’ve been ghosted a lot. What field are you in? Might be more relevant to focus it on a specific career path rather than just in general
Cu77eR@reddit
Same kinda, it feels like companies are super picky right now even for jobs that pay well, I just got turned down for a job that made me do SEVEN interviews.
InsectShort@reddit (OP)
Same here for. It's honestly brutal, especially if you're applying to tech roles. It feels like you have to be a unicorn at this point to get an offer.
InsectShort@reddit (OP)
Same here for the most part. It's honestly brutal, especially if you're applying to tech roles. It feels like you have to be a unicorn at this point to get an offer.
xdarkrosesx@reddit
My partner also had about 6 interviews, then ghosted by the company until he kept reaching out & they told him they went with someone else🤦🏻♀️
GrossWeatherman@reddit
I can relate... recently went through process for 3 separate roles that I am more or less overqualified for, made it past the final round for every one with stellar feedback. Each had at least 4-5 rounds and a case study and got told they're "pressing pause on hiring" 3 times in a row
Colonel_Janus@reddit
Holy shit man I can't even imagine. I'm going into interview #3 for one job that didn't have the salary listed so I'm terrified of going through all this and getting an offer well below what I'm hoping for... Even worse to go through more than 2x the interview rounds and get rejected. Sorry to hear 😩
InsectShort@reddit (OP)
That makes sense. I’ve heard the same from a few people. It seems like everyone’s hitting different parts of the process (some struggling to get interviews, others stuck in slow cycles or getting ghosted).
I was thinking of keeping it general at first just to see if there’s interest, but open to narrowing it if that ends up making more sense.
I’m in product. What field are you in?
jaslr4@reddit
Almost every construction company is hiring, Lowe’s, Home Depot, Costco, Walmart, McDonalds, Sam’s, Hobby Lobby, City, County, North Texas Tollways, FedEx, UPS, Amazon, law enforcement……..
Square_Candle_4644@reddit
My son is 20, never been able to even get an interview. Since he has no experience, the bots just kick him out. He doesn't feel comfortable working in restaurants and no one else will even call him back.
Beginning_Care_267@reddit
Just walk into a business and show them your resume and tell them you want an interview! Thats what we did in my days, but kids these days don’t want to work and just eat their avocado toast!
🤣🤣🤣
Burning_at-the_Edges@reddit
This is pretty funny.
Different_Archer8879@reddit
It's really hard to find a job anywhere these days. Took me 3 years to finally land a good job. And even Fast Food turned me down. It's tough out there. This economy right now is awful.
Anthrax_enjoyer@reddit
This is going to piss some people off but there are some jobs that are hiring that a lot of people would be qualified for, they just don’t want to work them.
Police, sales, Teaching, etc.
You’re not going to get a cushy 85k a year corporate job as easily as 5 or so years ago and probably never will again, but if you consider what you’re willing work with what’s out there you can find a career. You just have negotiate with your lifestyle.
pepenador85@reddit
Really depends on the field sone fields are hiring quickly
TheGeoGod@reddit
I started my own thing on the side because I’m paid significantly below market at my job. I had to take this job after being laid off last year. Took a 20% pay cut.
