How often do tills glitch when scanning scratch cards?

huh
so in my work the lottery terminal is separate from the machine; you scan the scratch card, put in the unique four digit code and it tells the user how much to pay out.
then separately on the tills you type in, in the "lotto prizes" section, the amount that the terminal told you to pay out
so it's fair enough that it was actually £4 instead of £2, but seems odd that it came to £4k? if it was £400 I could see a decimal point gone missing but where's the extra zero come from
of course this is my experience with separate machines so ymmv
diddlydingdangdong@reddit
That doesn't look like Camelot's machine, rather the shop's till. I would guess that their tills have a limit of £9999.99 and the shopkeeper's tried entering 4.00, entered 400 and then typed it again so it's presented as 4004.00. A payout of that size has to be claimed at the post office, smaller shops have a payout limit of around £500 I believe.

He scanned it on a machine then it displayed on shops till
irishlad162@reddit
Did it appear on the till instantly? I work in a Spar, and i know in our case ou scan the scratchcard on the lotto machine, it will display the amount won on the screen and print out a custome recipt and retail recipt. Then you manually enter the payout on the till. That looks to me like the shopkeeper typed in £4004 instead of just £4. The lotto machine has a transaction history, so it shouldn't be difficult for a manager to go back and check if you know the exact time, as i assume you dont have the scratchcard and you didn't get the recipt for it
roro80uk@reddit
I'm confused here, did you leave the winning scratch card at the shop?
I assume the shop didn't give you £4000. I'm also assuming that due to the ambiguity you didn't walk away with the £2 or £4 prize either, as that would be madness.
So if you have no prize money and no winning scratch card, what's going on?
Splodge89@reddit
This is what’s confused me. If I had a scratch card which I’d be told was £4k in value - it’s not leaving my sight until it’s cashed
West_Yorkshire@reddit
£500 is the max you can get paid out without going to Camelot in person or sending the scratch card off in the post (which no one in their right mind would do)
Positive-View7316@reddit
£4000 or £4004 is not a prize amount, i checked the website for you, so it has to be a glitch, see official website for breakdown of prizes or look at the back of the next one you buy it might be on it https://assets.national-lottery.co.uk/dam/jcr:9d28ea1e-abc4-4a43-ba88-945da9a64b81
gct_gvs@reddit
If you call national lottery helpline and give details of the shop name and approx time when you did this, they can easily verify.
Clear-Student-9607@reddit
It's definitely worth going back to the shop, as the till's internal records should clearly show the error. A company like that has to track these transactions, so they can verify what actually happened.
Admirable_Region9049@reddit
You can't claim that much in a store (max is £500), so most likely scenario is it's manual entry on the till after the lotto machine tells the prize payout and he typed too many zeros when entering £4.00
zonked282@reddit
I have no idea personally, but I would be utterly astonished if a company as big as Camelot, that entrusts a lottery to thousands of external vendors, didn't have records of what value has been scanned on each machine.
Kumnaa@reddit
Camelot stopped running it in 2024, it’s now run by Allwyn Entertainment
DrowninQuartz@reddit
Allwyn for the win!
bigwillyman7@reddit
Aside from the app being dog shit now

PapiMeme@reddit
They do have records. The scratch card was £4 and the max it will let you cash out is £500. The lottery machine is separate to the till so the cashier has most likely mistyped the amount in his till
Tumping@reddit
Basically you won £4000 , they gave you £4 instead and pocketed £3996
cgknight1@reddit
No - you cannot claim amounts over £500 in store and it actually does not tell you what the amount is if it is over £500, just to contact the lotrery.
So if has to be an error.
Obvious_Shape4869@reddit (OP)
Thank you, I also called N.L again today and they reiterated that any amount over £500 would not be displayed
Choice_Midnight1708@reddit
Sorry you left the winning scratch card there with the shopkeeper, who is undoubtedly having their brother in law claim the prize today, because you have social anxiety?
cgknight1@reddit
There is no prize - there is no indication of prize over £500 in store. You have to phone up.
That it says £4000 means it's not a lottery machine and not a winner.
GoatMonkeyy@reddit
You can only claim up to £500 at a retailer, anything above that the lottery machine plays a sound and says call Allwyn(formerly Camalot) to claim. It doesn't show the actual amount for security reasons. Anything over £500 has to be claimed by phone or online, you can't do bigger amounts at the Post Office any more.
The retailer in this instance would only know if it was a big win, not the amount so it is an issue with their own PoS system.
Obvious_Shape4869@reddit (OP)
Thank you
New_Crow_8206@reddit
Regardless of what the till says, I'm fairly sure you would notice if you had won £4,000!
Obvious_Shape4869@reddit (OP)
To clarify: this was my view of the till on the customer side of it, hence the phot
Iwillabandonthissoon@reddit
Was it on the till or the lottery machine?
Obvious_Shape4869@reddit (OP)
Till
MintberryCrunch____@reddit
This would be high level social media marketing.
Assuming it’s not I wonder how many would be as honest as you.
Obviously I would 100% do the same…
Obvious_Shape4869@reddit (OP)
I’m not the shopkeeper 😭
Carvery@reddit
Did you also buy 2 more scratch cards that were £2 each? Trying to work out whether this screenshot is displaying the 2x £2 wins or whether that’s something separate.
Which scratch card was it? Some of them have multipliers so potentially could have been £4k without anyone realising.
The shop should have kept your receipt, thy staple them to the top of the scratchcard so id go in and ask to see and double check it. If they refuse then I think I’d go and ask the lottery people again.
Obvious_Shape4869@reddit (OP)
It was a £1 double match scratchcard, I did also buy 2 x £2 more separate scratchcards which are displayed on the till
Obvious_Shape4869@reddit (OP)
To clarify, it was the shops till and I did buy 2 x £2 more scratch cards with the ‘£4’ won and I did leave the shop after being told £4 simply because I thought I would just call national lottery after and I was under the belief that they would be able to track the card
MiddleEarthFoak@reddit
It actually says the win was £4004 minus the cost of two more tickets was £4000 on the till.
In my experience, i have won a few times but maximum £500 they are always too the round number and wouldn’t be £505, £106 or £4004.
I think from the picture and my experience the guy in the shop was honest with you. It’s his Point of Sale machine read incorrectly, which in my experience of knowing people that install and maintain these machines they are regularly asked to put exploits in to reduce the productive of the store for tax purposes.
