Are Bounty bars really that unpopular?
Posted by spritzreddit@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 266 comments
I had another discussion about Bounty bars at home the other day, with some people saying they’re widely disliked and others who actually bought two packs of them.
It doesn’t seem like there’s much middle ground. The ones who say they’re unpopular argue that they don’t know anyone in their generation who likes them (school/uni age group). Meanwhile, people at the office (25+, mostly in their 30s and 40s) tend to say Bountys are alright—maybe not the best chocolate bar, but not something they actively dislike either.
Where do you stand on it? And what’s your age group (if you’re happy to share)?

The greatest thing created by human hand is Bounty Brownies. They are an elite tier snack in chocolate or brownie format/
Inevitable_Boot_4392@reddit
Bounty hate is manufactured and forced. I will not stand for Bounty slander
GroundbreakingRing42@reddit
The people that dislike bounty and leave me with a...bounty? At the bottom of the celebrations tin are my personal hero's.
GeggingIn@reddit
I love the taste of paradise.
CarrotRunning@reddit
I think if you get a bounty and a lilt it's probably ok to do an accent for a few minutes.

Throw in the Tahiti body wash to round off the day
Latter-Tangerine-951@reddit
You mean Timotei?
spellbookwanda@reddit
No, Tahiti, it was in a chunky rectangle bottle and came in a variety of tropical scents - coconut was white, there was a peach coloured one too, and o think black and turquoise.
noob4life247@reddit
And a Malibu

PS don't do the accent ;)

I think you'd need at least 10% on 23andme to even consider doing it in private to be honest.
Low-Air-1346@reddit
I really like them. We get packs with different kinds of mini- bars and until recent, I was the only one eating the bounties. A few months ago my kid tried them. Now I have competition for them. Other two people in the house don't like them.
40-45-ish mom with 14 year old kid.
Brilliant_Bowler_994@reddit
No mainstream chocolate is worth eating. It's barely chocolate anymore. If you haven't noticed your palette is 💀
Tall_Stick5608@reddit
No one is eating a bounty or many other confectionary chocolate for high quality chocolate, you have it as a sweet snack with a combination of flavours and textures for not that much money.
Brilliant_Bowler_994@reddit
Noones asking for 70% cocoa..Just the 50 odd percent it used to be, no palm oil or powdered milk. You then dont expect these companies across the board to make their product smaller and STILL charge you more. Youre a turkey crowing for Xmas. If you had a palette youd realise.
Tall_Stick5608@reddit
I have a better palette, probably a better cook and know far more about the food industry than yourself. A dairy milk which doesn’t have any other candy element to it has approx 23% of cocoa solids 20 - 25 years ago. It still contained palm oil.
Yes perhaps not as good now and slightly smaller in serving size but they use fair trade cocoa which they didn’t before.
The fact is people like yourselves don’t care about quality chocolate because you are not willing to pay for it. Quality chocolate is expensive - period however insufferable people like yourself complain about a mass market affordable product and are not willing to pay 3 - 5 times for a high end alternative.
Brilliant_Bowler_994@reddit
EU Directive 2000/36/EC (implemented in 2003) established the standard for milk chocolate at a minimum of 25% total dry cocoa solids.
This was the beginning and they slow drip like they do everything else so that people without a palette barely notice.
Brilliant_Bowler_994@reddit
The introduction of palm oil in smaller amounts than today started in 2009. Im 47 so yes I remember when they used cocoa butter instead. At least get your facts right. Youre talking like someone that is 15 years old.
Brilliant_Bowler_994@reddit
Youre just carrying on with the same douchery only qualifying it with your own opinions. Same old reddit.

My lad loves a Bounty. Since he started buying them with his pocket money, I've started having them too sometimes. They're dead nice.
FadedAlligator@reddit
If there’s a box of Celebrations or a mix of chocolate bars, a Bounty is always the last thing left. I’ll eat one if there’s nothing else going, but it’s never something I’d actually choose. Coconut just doesn’t really belong in a chocolate bar for me, it always feels a bit out of place compared to everything else. I do get why some people like them, but it feels like a proper love it or hate it thing.
ddmf@reddit
I do love a bounty, the dark chocolate ones were better.
The best beer I've ever had is Oskar Blues Death By Coconut - it's like a bounty in a glass. Absolutely beautiful, only ever managed to find a couple though as they're only released once a year.
Qyro@reddit
Bounties are a great chocolate choice. Dark ones are king, but the milk ones aren't too bad. Would rather have a Bounty over a lot of chocolate bars these days.
chronicbint@reddit
No, there are plenty of hardcore chocolate connoisseurs with better taste than the hoi polloi who love a Bounty.
Itchy-Book402@reddit
The ones in dark chocolate, red wrapper, were really good. I used tobbuy them when I had munchies yeara ago. The regular blue ones in milky chocolate are way too sweet.
Violet351@reddit
Same here, love coconut but find them too sweet
Used-Needleworker719@reddit
Dark bounties were phenomenal
Competitive-Fact-820@reddit
I used to have at least one dark chocolate bounty as a treat every week. So, so delicious.
I am not a fan of the milk chocolate variety at all - I am always the person who will take them out of the Celebrations though because I don't actively dislike them.
On a related topic my son found Dark Chocolate Kinder Bueno in the local sandwich shop yesterday - I am looking forward to having it as my mid-morning snack. I also found Dark Chocolate Tunnocks Teacakes at Home Bargains last week and those are absolutely fantastic.
Hammahnator@reddit
I miss the dark chocolate ones.
Wedel Dark Chocolate With Coconut (Sainsbury's sell it near me) is quite nice and gives a little coconut hit but it's not quite the same as an actual dark chocolate Bounty
Various_Ad2320@reddit
M&S have a dark chocolate coconut bar. I'm scarily addicted to it.
Hammahnator@reddit
Ooooh well. I know where I'm going next week....
abyssal-isopod86@reddit
It really sucks the discontinued the dark Bounty.
Piff_Pav@reddit
Yes, yes, yes! Dark chocolate bounty was really nice. I wish they brought them back. The blue ones are too sweet, I agree. You have a bite and don't want anymore.
SpectreSingh89@reddit
Red package? Never got an opportunity to try those.
Piff_Pav@reddit
They disappeared from shops a few years ago and they were not easy to find when they were still selling them anyway.
s7beckTM@reddit
Literally posted exactly this at the same time as yourself, I am not alone, hurrah!
SUMMATMAN@reddit
I thought so too! Why tf they stop making them? Milk chocolate bounties are ok but nowt special. Dark chocolate among my top chocolate bars!
r_bish@reddit
You might have tried this/ not want to, but 1 tin condensed milk + 1 bag dessicated coconut (the little bags from the baking aisle) mixed then scooped into small balls or a long log, chill then pour melted dark chocolate over in whatever thickness you like
Fyonella@reddit
Completely agree! The dark chocolate ones were great. Milk chocolate version. Just sickly.
Whittler7@reddit
I swear I’ve had a dark bounty in the last few months in the UK. Have they really been discontinued?
Itchy-Book402@reddit
Discounted in 2023 sadly

If they were really unpopular they would have stopped selling them...
Thi13een@reddit
Bounties are lush! Properly overhated. The bounty ice cream bars were unbelievable when I was a bairn 25 years ago. They probably still are, there’s no reason I couldn’t have one to be honest. In fact I think I will get one tomorrow after work. I can do what I want.
spellbookwanda@reddit
The ice cream bars were gorgeous, very hard to find though.

Can't stand dried coconut in anything or coconut milk.
Love coconut water when in a hot country straight out the fresh coconut though
mahler_1@reddit
Love them. Prefer the dark chocolate but I'll take any
Kvark33@reddit
I'm sure Bounty's are some sort of tax avoidance scheme, I don't know anyone who likes them, and they are always fully stocked in shops I got to yet they still sell them.
Opposite_Funny9958@reddit
57F dreading the day they stop making the plain chocolate ones due to costs and not enough people liking them.
Sxn747Strangers@reddit
I didn’t like them, (50’s), but I ate them sometimes because I like chocolate, and it meant any nicer chocolate lasted a bit longer rather than being the first to get eaten.
SpudFire@reddit
There are 2 people in our office of 12 that like them. Broad range of ages. That stacks with what I've experienced throughout my life - most people don't like them, a minority do.
I'll also add that Aldi sell multipacks of Bountys and Galaxy Ripples from the same box, 50:50 split. I usually have to dig to the back to try find a pack of Galaxy whereas the shelf is overflowing with packs of Bounty
G4HDU@reddit
I have the last few left from a big box in my kitchen. I love them so much I biy in bulk.
Bethsticle@reddit
I love a bounty. My workmate always brinks me a little sandwich bag of them at Christmas, as no-one in her household likes them, but they love a tub of celebrations
OrganicPoet1823@reddit

It’s the only bar I actually like. Everything else is meh.
I_am_Relic@reddit
I'm in my 50s and had always liked bounty bars.
I'd usually nommed the chocolate coating before working on the filling.
They are not unpopular to me per se , but not only have I changed my diet to "no nibbles", I find all confectionary over priced and sub standard over time, bounty bars included.
They are just not worth buying, both from a financial and taste point of view.
ShelecktraYT@reddit
It's a chocolate bar that seems to have the acquired taste appeal, yet shouldn't.
I know plenty of people that wouldn't turn their nose up at a cake covered in chocolate and coconut, yet stick a bar of coconut covered in chocolate in front of them and it's a different game all of a sudden.
I love a bounty, in fact I'm going to go get some for later 🤣
ExcitementKooky418@reddit
I'm 41 and I love them, though hardly ever buy them. Don't think I've seen them in the shops much recently to be honest
But I can understand people not liking them. A lot of people don't like coconut, it does get stuck in your teeth a fair bit
BG3restart@reddit
63, love them. I was thrilled when the dark chocolate version returned, then it seemed to disappear again. I know several people in my age group who like them. We often jostle for them in a friendly manner when the Celebrations tub is passed around.
Buttery_-_Balls@reddit
I'm 37 and I love them. My daughter who is 10 also loves them, sometimes if I don't want to do one of my own chores I'll offer her a bounty to do it for me 😂

Bounties are great - full sized, fun sized, celebration sized - actually kind of works for me that no one else likes them!
Hippadoppaloppa@reddit
I absolutely love Bounty bars and so does my teen. We both go for them in boxes of Celebrations, which I understand is an unusual situation, lol. It's usually the Mars Bars left in our house.
Ok-Explanation1990@reddit
I love bounty. And the little Bounty straw/ stick things they've started selling in sooner places are pretty delicious too.
andy0506@reddit
I like the Cadburys cherry ripe chocolate bar. Its coconut cherry and chocolate
Intrepid_Bearz@reddit
I like them. They don’t like me. Coconut does weird things to my stomach. Never used to as a kid but as I got older I became less and less tolerant to it.
How_did_the_dog_get@reddit
Dark ones are amazing.
Australia has a cherry ripe. Those are wild its a bounty, but because coconut is mild flavour its got cherry flavour and bright Red.
Love them
Shoddy_Pilot_2737@reddit

I stopped buying Bounty bars when they dropped the tropical island ads. I’m not eating that unless I’m being gaslit by palm trees.
SingleMaltLife@reddit
Bounty bars are what made me believe I hated coconut for years and years. A friend had some fresh coconut once and I very reluctantly tried it and I liked it.
Sage-Freke-@reddit
Looks like everyone either loves them or hates them here. I like the taste of coconut, but not the texture of it in bounties. Which makes it ok.
GrabbedByTheGhost@reddit
In my experience picky eaters don't like bounty bars.
It's the same sort of people that don't like fish or mushrooms or cucumber or marzipan.

holytriplem@reddit
I've been out of the country for a few years now, and in that time they've apparently managed to discontinue dark chocolate bounties.
I must return to restore the natural order
HeartyBeast@reddit
What??? Is that why I can’t find them ??
Hammahnator@reddit
They stopped in 2022 or 2023 😕
prustage@reddit
Mars UK said in September 2023 that "we have temporarily had to delist Bounty Dark for operational reasons and we’re working hard to bring the product back when we can".
Incidentally both cherry and mango flavoured Bountys have been available in Europe and Australia but I believe they too have been discontinued.

Kapika96@reddit
I think generally nut things are love them or hate them. Plenty of people love them. I can't stand coconut though and find them utterly disgusting. There are chocolate bars I don't like as much but will still eat, then there's those I'd sooner throw away than eat. The difference there is whether they have nuts or not, and I doubt I'm the only one.
prustage@reddit
I like Bountys particualrly the dark chocolate ones. I also prefer the dark chocolate Kitkats. I am over 40.
MidnightFalcon89@reddit
I'm of South Asian descent and all my fellow Asians predominantly love bounty. Recently worked at a company where everyone was most in the 20's and they hated bounty. Legit shocked when I chose them first out the celebrations tub.
Note: Dark choc red bounty was amazing
Dnny10bns@reddit
I don't touch them. They're the last ones to go in celebrations. The last time I had a proper one was in my early 20s when we'd put pot in them and eat a bar. 🤭😂

Extreme-Kangaroo-842@reddit
I'm a take it or leave it kind of guy where chocolate is concerned. Dunno the fuss about it and would rather have a packet of crisps.
Coconut is meh too.
But I look forward to all those Bounty's left over post-Christmas. Everyone else hates them in my family.
But I remember once being starving and quaffing one down knowing I'd hate it. I didn't. It was one of the best chocolate bars I've ever had in my life.
So it's now my post-Christmas secret. The Bounty chocs whittle down and no one knows, but me, how they are slowly disappearing.
I love my dirty little secret 🤣

Bounties are one of those sweets that highly controversial (I don't understand why). You either love it or hate it. A lot of people don't liek the taste of sweet fake coconut, others love.
I absolutely love it and can't understand the hate. But this is true for a lot of coconut flavoured sweets.

Maleficent-Rise7110@reddit
I'm 31 and my brothers are 29 and 27 and we all love Bountys. The normal blue ones.
Whenever I have one in front of people at work (of any age group) the reaction is either pure hatred or saying the dark chocolate ones in the red wrapper are good. Never had a different response from anyone on them.
DanielReddit26@reddit
You say there's no middle ground but then say your own research has most people firmly in that middle ground...
I'm there too. I eat them from celebrations, they're fine but not one I'd be excited about picking out. I'd take a normal sized free one if offered but if I was just buying a chocolate bar(s) then I wouldn't pick it.

I love them. Sadly but I’ve got sensitive teeth now and they are just too sweet for me to handle.
Birdman_of_Upminster@reddit
Sixties - always loved them since I was a kid. Wife and I argue over the ones in a box of Celebrations, and the relative rating of the box is judged by how many Bounties it contains.
Aggravating_Cloud657@reddit
The dark chocolate ones were the best.
TieDyePandas@reddit
Very popular, I sell a shit tonne of dm everyday.
PatchworkMann@reddit
26 and theyre the best celebration.
Japhet_Corncrake@reddit
I like 'em.
Not my go-to (Star Bar), but a fairly regular choice. Top 5 at least.
Mighty-Wings@reddit
I love Bounty's. I purposely leave them until last in Celebrations as I get them by default.
everyoneis_gay@reddit
Coconut is a marmite food, surely that's what makes the chocolate a love/hate thing
bahumat42@reddit
So the people who like them, tend to really like them.
But thats a smaller group of people than those who like malteasers for example.
The perfect example of this is how they are frequently the one left at the end of a celebrations box.
As evidenced by celebrations making an advert about that.
Advert
- A side not I have noticed bounty fans tend to like the dark bounty more, but that may just be the people I know.
SunWarri0r@reddit
Remember the uproar at the first sweetie on the Celebrations advent calendar being a Bounty!? 🤣
CindysExtraTesticle@reddit
Kind-Tie5236@reddit
40 something. I love Bountys, always have. There's not much chocolate to be had, obvs they're mostly sweet coconut. That would be an off-putting factor for many. I love coconut.
I also like Milky bar, which many dislike (I know it's not really chocolate, but it is shaped like chocolate.)
I don't like Mars or Galaxy, malty tasting chocolate doesn't do it for me. Milky way and maltesers also meh (I'll eat them if I'm given them but wouldn't buy for myself.)
Not a fan of horrible nu-cadbury or Tony's. Only bought Tony's once. It tastes like waxy budget easter egg chocolate to me.
Kitkats aren't as good as they used to be, not sure what's been done to them, if anything? I used to love them, now they're merely 'ok.'
The only choc I buy multipacks of are Bounty & Snickers.
Random_Lady_84@reddit
I always hated it with a passion when I was young, because the coconut was just sooooo dry…
In the last few years (I’m 42 now!) I’ve started to actually like them!
I honestly never thought I’d become a Bounty lover.
Namaste_Life@reddit
Who cares about other people's opinions about other people's tastes, honestly?!?!
shortercrust@reddit
I love a Bounty Bar but there are always plenty left at the bottom of the Celebrations box
Kian-Tremayne@reddit
I like Bounty bars, preferred the dark chocolate version, and I’m in my mid fifties.
But Cabana bars were even better.
TheFlyingGerbil@reddit
I don't know if it's rose tinted specs but I think they were more coconutty previously, now they just taste sweet. So I'd have them in a celebration size, or just about cope with the smaller 4-pack size but any more and it's too much and that is not a feeling I want with a chocolate bar.
Vivid_Employment8635@reddit
I always avoided them but recently tried one and now I can’t get enough of them. Never met anyone else who likes them though.
Plenty_Suspect_3446@reddit
34 and i like a bounty.
Peanut0151@reddit
Red Bounty good. Blue Bounty bad
HeartyBeast@reddit
I only like the plain ones. They seem very rare
Puzzled-Lunch-6558@reddit
Dark Bounty is where it's at, but you don't see them so much. Think it was only me that bought them out my old work's vending machine!
vinpetrol@reddit
Me (58): love them!
Wife (57): hates them!
Eldest daugher (21): loves them!
Youngest daughter (18): hates them!
Make of that what you will. The only problem is that I can't pull of the trick of "leave them in the Celebrations till last then scoff them all" as eldest daughter does the same thing. At least we get to share them at the end.
melanie110@reddit
Yes they are awful
NeitherAd3347@reddit
I hate coconut. Not the taste. Its the consistency- zombie land
RobertHellier@reddit
Love a bounty and a blue quality street 😋
markusparkus75@reddit
I love Bounty bars. Some people just like being wrong.
marlonoranges@reddit
That is just mad shit. Bounties are superb
Federal-Demand-2968@reddit
The dark chocolate ones were epic
boredsittingonthebus@reddit
I can't stand them. It's mainly because of the strange texture. Finding bits of coconut stuck to my gums and hour later is also a bit annoying.
Clive_Trotter75@reddit
Fucking rank.
BigRimeCharlie@reddit
Taste of fucking paradise bruv, what's not to like.
PassiveTheme@reddit
They're not my favourite, but I don't mind them. In a pack of Celebrations, I'm not rushing to get all the Bountys, but if they're left at the end, I'll take it as a chance to eat some decent chocolates.
Strong_Roll5639@reddit
I'm 37 and love a bounty
seven-cents@reddit
If they were that unpopular they would've been discontinued by now.
unbelievablydull82@reddit
Love them, the ice cream bars are lovely too
Spiritual_Smell4744@reddit
I love them, but hate picking coconut out of my teeth for the rest of the day.
rhunar@reddit
They’re ok. Wouldn’t go out my way to buy one but would eat a mini one from celebrations but would probably find a full bar too much. 30
Aromatic_Tourist4676@reddit
They are delicious however I rarely buy them
Maraan666@reddit
Most of the time, I just don't think about them. I occasionally get passed one, and I think it's OK as a bit of a change, but it doesn't get me that excited, and neither do I dislike it.
Recently I've been lusting after coconut ice cream, which is unobtainable where I live. What are Bounty ice cream bars like? Are they acceptable as a temporary substitute for coconut ice cream?
Tonythepillow@reddit
Absolutely foul excuse for a chocolate bar.
Shouty-Hooman@reddit
I'm sorry what. I'd fucking inject a bounty. Who are these people
dabassmonsta@reddit
I love a Bounty. At home, I get all of them from a tub of Celebrations. The Milky Ways are always the last left.
Numerous-Abrocoma-50@reddit
If you are eating junk food, it should be something you really like.
I dont hate bounties. But one of my least favourite so fail above test. It must be great if you do love them as you get all the celebrations.
I used to love coffee creams and everyone hated them. Could leave them till later as a kid when the chocs got handed out as knew they would be there later. Kinda like draft strategies in american sports.
heyitsed2@reddit
I generally don't like coconut but will devour the Bounty's in a tub of celebrations at Christmas... Haven't tried a full sized bounty probably since they were first on my radar like 20 years ago...
SubjectiveAssertive@reddit
I hate to break it to you but the dark one has been discontinued for some time
GrabbedByTheGhost@reddit
W-what?! :(
Brownie9107@reddit
I don’t like bounties ….
NoodleDoodlesocks@reddit
They are one of my favourites because the chocolate is satifyingly crisp when cold.
NoNameNoNumba@reddit
44, i like em.
100_wasps@reddit
I love them, I'm also pretty sure I'm the only person incentivising my work cafe to stock any. 25
petemorley@reddit
25 doesn’t seem like many.
OutrageousRhubarb853@reddit
That was just lunch
SunDriedFart@reddit
i love them!
Separate-Frame-7038@reddit
30's and I think they're disgusting. Never liked them. My parents do though.
Tight-Principle-743@reddit
I don’t like them - but that’s just because I’m not a fan of coconut, it’s not the rest of the chocolate itself.
Sendhimoffdiabolical@reddit
I'm 32, never liked them, don't like coconut at all. Parents both liked them.
s7beckTM@reddit
Used to love the dark chocolate Bounty, sadly no more. The milk chocolate seem to be mega sweet (probably added sweeteners).
Itchy-Book402@reddit
Great minds
Bus8082@reddit
Yuck yuck yuck
The texture is the worst. And how they make coconut taste so odd. Give me coconut milk and it’s delicious but bounty gunk is gross.
ClevelandWomble@reddit
Not really. It's just that some people don't enjoy the texture and taste of the coconut filling. I'll admit that it would not be my go-to selection in our corner shop.
runawaydebt@reddit
I like them but I prefer the Marsh and Mallow coconut bar. The marshmallow is a nicer texture for me
franki-pinks@reddit
I hate them. Horrible things.
BandicootObjective32@reddit
My dad loves them, he's nearly 70 and he'd pick a dark bounty if he could. I'll tolerate them - if they're the only ones left in the box I guess I'll eat them eventually - mid 30s. My partner hates them
Frosty_Customer_9243@reddit
Loved the Bounty dark chocolate 😪
Big_Fall_6173@reddit
I hate them, my partner loves them.
FilmFanatic1066@reddit
34 I hate them, I hate coconut
