caramelpupcorn@reddit
I believe we called it Chinese jump rope.
ughyoujag@reddit
Yep. Us too. Is that racist or is it really Chinese?
caramelpupcorn@reddit
Apparently it was invented in the 7th century in China, so at least the Chinese part is accurate and not some random assigned name haha.
imhereforthevotes@reddit
Like the fire drill.
Elandycamino@reddit
No, during the Ming Dynasty it became popular to hop out of your chariot at stop lights.
Logical-Cherry9395@reddit
Are we sure? I thought it was during the Warring States Period? Everyone jump off your horses, shoot some arrows, hop back on and then ride off going "Hya! Hya! Hya!".
(No, I haven't watched way too many Wu Xia and Chinese Historical Dramas, why do you ask?)
Elandycamino@reddit
You seem to know a bit more history than me, but take my word for I am a stranger on Reddit.
klockworx@reddit
I was always told it was the sha dynasty
CorgiMonsoon@reddit
I thought it was shady nasty
ZaphodBeeblebrahx@reddit
Wait, how about checkers?
Elandycamino@reddit
During the Zhou Dynasty they were known as Rallys in Eastern China.
JSessionsCrackDealer@reddit
Or the whispers
NarkovToob@reddit
Called it the same.
The ‘song’ went, “England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales” where you are jumping side to side alternating which side of the string/elastic is between your legs, then, “Inside, outside, inside, on!” with feet going to those places.
RanaEire@reddit
I grew up in Latin America, and we also called it "Chinese"..
No idea why, though..
babyBear83@reddit
Nope. Not at all. We didn’t know about this in my area of the Midwest states.
addicted-to-spuds@reddit
Midwest here, too and I also have no idea what this is.
Bleacherblonde@reddit
Chinese jump rope! My best friend and I were the champs of our school. My best friend was better than me though. I miss that. And all the more complicated shit as you went farther
scooches66@reddit
I remember it being called French skipping for some reason in the UK. 1970s
AllHomesteading@reddit
We called it “elastic”.

Misskwy@reddit
Interesting! In french here we called it "jouer à l'élastique" and since I learned English only in my teens, I never heard the term "Chinese jump rope" before today!
crazykitty2019@reddit
I'm on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. Sometimes our expressions for things differ quite a bit in comparison to other regions in the country :)

Ah that's where we get it! Kummikeks in Estonian. Basically direct translation of Gummihopse.
Inevitable-While-577@reddit
Gummitwist!
CookieBarfspringer@reddit
My German cousin called it Kaugummi which confused me for years. I never even saw them in the US
Inevitable-While-577@reddit
Lol, Kaugummi means chewing gum! Now I'm confused, too.
Feisty-Bluebird-5277@reddit
Elastics! I was dreadful at it
Lensgoggler@reddit
We in Estonia called it "kummikeks" (no connection to China), and I sucked at it too. I grew a lot very quickly and it all went into my legs and I was so clumsy with said legs :D Fun fact: when I was little, Soviet Union collapsed and while good, it meant you couldn't just go and buy elastics. Mothets somehow had squirreled some away when shops had it once in a blue moon, and then we sneakily turned it into this game. Many friends got into trouble when little brother's joggers' elastics snapped and mum tried to replace it only to find the prescious elastics gone...
TongueBittenLip1361@reddit
It's called Chinese Garter in our part of the world.
Into-the-stream@reddit
canada. we called it "monkey tails".
how did it go?
Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales
Inside, Outside, Monkey TAILS!
Donkeh101@reddit
I don’t recall the name of the game here in AU. But ours (my school anyway) was
England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales
Inside, outside, inside, out!
So quite similar. Probably called it stretchy stringy thingie whatsit called or something. Aha.
Farahild@reddit
Elastieken :)
kellyasksthings@reddit
Elastics.
CuriousTurtle5@reddit
Chinese jump rope. We made ours with hundreds of rubber bands. Played every morning before school and at recess.
"Jump in. Jump out. Jump side to side. Jump on."
RogerClyneIsAGod2@reddit
I have zero memory of how this is played.
sunrise_parabellum@reddit
Elastics in NZ
Ok_Wash_2703@reddit
In Germany we have said "Gummitwist". 😂
Grammarhead-Shark@reddit
We just called it elastics.
We where so creative hahah.
The rhythm we said was 'England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Inside, Outside, Inside, Out/On' (last one depended on skill level).
DeepestKnee@reddit
In-out-side-side-ON!-in-out! Then make it higher on your legs 😂 Called it Chinese Jump Rope
Big-Ad7571@reddit
Yessss we did “jump in, jump out, jump side to side, jump in, jump out, jump on!! And then raise it up.
MyNameIsntFlower@reddit
We did: in-out-side-side-in-out-on
lifespotting@reddit
We called it jumpsies (Toronto 1980's)
Radiant-Avocado-3158@reddit
Chinese skipping. My absolute favorite! I was a pro. We had all different routines you had to get through before you could raise it higher. So fun.
butterednoodlelovers@reddit
Chinese jump ropes. Done to Mississippi. M=both legs inside rope. I=jump outside rope ss= jump onto the ropes. Don't remember pp=action. Started at ground, to ankles, to knees and up.
I was not a springy kid and getting to knees by having to hop was my limit. The other girls wouls usually let me walk it to get higher. There was one girl, hey Lana, who was able to hop those damned ropes when held above our heads!!!!
HopelessMagic@reddit
That's definitely Chinese Jump Rope.
Fun fact! There was a girl in my 5th grade class who wouldn't share hers with me. She was snide as hell about it. So I brought in my Pogo Ball. Ms. Priss complained about the noise and I wasn't allowed to bring it anymore but she still had her jump rope and bragged about it.
So...one day the toy drive was happening and she went to the bathroom. I took her stupid jump rope and threw it in the donation box!! Now who's bored at recess?!?! 🤣😅
Khajiit_Has_Upvotes@reddit
I wanted one of those pogo balls so bad when I was a kid!
ApplesBananasRhinoc@reddit
I had one, it was amazing! And i never got what i wanted when it was popular, it had to be from the clearance rack or nothing.
Longjumping-Bell-762@reddit
I had one and promptly fell and skinned my nose the first time I tried it. Not so much fun.

DeepestKnee@reddit
Chinese jump rope
giraffemoo@reddit
We called it chinese jump rope, I lived in FL. I remember there were different levels, like "pizza" where one holder would go down to one leg so the space you're jumping in is a triangle. Then the next level was "tick tock" and the one leg holder would move their leg back and forth slowly to make it look like a metronome.
