recommended ebike for commuting 40 miles
Posted by ymeeymee@reddit | ebikes | View on Reddit | 58 comments
Not sure this is feasible but are there any ebikes (non pedal power or pedal assist types) that have a 40 mile range and can more than 25 mph? I'm 175 lbs and would like to commute from home to work which is 30 miles one way. I have 110V charging facility at work so something that can charge in a couple of hours at work would be great for the commute back.

There are a ton of bikes on the market that can do this. What's your budget? I would look at options by Aventon, Trek, Velotric, and others.
I'm a Velotric affiliate, so hit me up if you are looking for a discount.
demonhawk14@reddit
Looking at possibly picking up a Nomad 2. Do you happen to have any discount codes still available?

That is just plain wrong, not without an extra VERY expensive battery. I know what I'm talking about since I own a Specialized Globe Haul ST and Yamaha Moro 07. The only ebike you mentioned in your list worth investing in is the Trek. The others are junk.
lee1026@reddit
Just because Specialized over charges you for the battery doesn't mean it can't be done.
BobSanvegana@reddit
When you think about it, you only need one that does 20 miles. You get to work in the morning, taking your charger, and you juice it back up while you're working. Plop it back in and ride home again. Rinse. Repeat.
dont_remember_eatin@reddit
Looks like almost no one is reading your text, just your post.
You want a motorcycle. Electric or gas, doesn't matter. 60 miles per day will kill you and the bicycle.
Get an M learners license, take the MSF course some weekend, and go get your wheels.
ymeeymee@reddit (OP)
I was thinking something like the eride pro SS
dont_remember_eatin@reddit
Does it have lights and turn signals? A VIN so it can be registered?
ymeeymee@reddit (OP)
Just riding on back streets and bike paths, donāt need turn signals. A light for evening commute would be great.
dont_remember_eatin@reddit
Lol no.
You're trying to exist in the legal gray area. Either you're on a motorcycle that's registered and insured, or you're on a bicycle.
Trying to have your cake and eat it too.
Enjoy getting your $5k purchase impounded when you get mailed driving it on a fucking bike path you twit.
ymeeymee@reddit (OP)
Dude whatās wrong with riding something like an eride pro SS on a back road with bike share lanes? Why drop F bombs?
fhwoompableCooper@reddit
Honestly get a decent cheap one and and cheap battery to wire
Pizza-Rat-4Train@reddit
It refers to itself as an āoff-road e motoā in its own marketing materials. Its refund policy says āALL E RIDE PRO MODELS ARE DESIGNED EXCLUSIVELY FOR OFF-ROAD USE AND ARE NOT GUARANTEED TO BE STREET LEGAL.ā Itās not even pretending to be an e-bike.
So it sounds like your plan is to ride a non-street-legal motorcycle on a bike path without a license or insurance. Every day. Let us know how that goes.
ymeeymee@reddit (OP)
Oh my bad. Thanks for letting me know.
mrbuza@reddit
Because that guy wears spandex every time he rides and anybody that doesn't rides like him is wrong.
dont_remember_eatin@reddit
I'm a commuter, not a spandex demon. I rely on multiuse trails to get to and from work safely. Maybe I don't want my ebike to get banned from those multiuse trails because of irresponsible emoto users with whom we often get lumped?
BoringBob84@reddit
Have you been paying attention to all of the laws that are being passed to restrict all ebikes because so many people pretend that motorcycles are ebikes?
lee1026@reddit
No reason to think OP is currently thinking of something beyond class 3 limits.
mrbuza@reddit
Yes!! You're about to ruffle some feathers but go for it bro. I have the talaria MX4. Upgraded to 72 volt chi battery. Shit rips. Don't bother with the doomer boomers, and also their dinosaur opinions.
s0rce@reddit
Those look offroad, Is this on trails or road?
ymeeymee@reddit (OP)
Iād like to avoid the highway so looking at bike path from home to work. So all road.
s0rce@reddit
it seems irresponsible to go >25mph (and illegal in my area) on bike paths on an emoto but you do you
ymeeymee@reddit (OP)
Iād be responsible. Not going to be speeding around cyclists going twice their speed. The 25+mph would be for streets
lee1026@reddit
I am kinda assuming there is a reason why OP doesn't want a true motorcycle (or for that matter, a car).
If you are going up to a true motorcycle, a Prius enters into the conversation.
Hot_Block_9675@reddit
EXACTLY. (and you're also right about no one actually reading what the OP said)
TitaniumKneecap@reddit
A leaperkim sherman L could easily do this. I've done this on one no problem.

Lordly_Lobster@reddit
Sounds like a motorcycle is more of what you want. You could probably get a used 250cc motorcycle for what you would spend on an ebike and it would be better in every way.
ymeeymee@reddit (OP)
Itās more of a fun commute on bike paths so I want electric.
Active_Scallion_5322@reddit
That's not for bike paths work
_insert-name-here@reddit
But you don't want pedal assist, so it seems as though you are looking for an electric motorcycle. At least where I live, bikes like can't be ridden on bike paths and they need to be driven on the road.
Look closely into the regulations in your area before you make any decisions, but the fact that you are looking for something that does not require pedaling will very likely restrict where you can ride it, and you may require licensing etc.
Active_Scallion_5322@reddit
All we need is another dick in the bike paths
Bobbyinredwood@reddit
I just did a 50 mile and 3000ft of elevation gain ride. PAS 3 the whole time. Lectric Expedition 2.0 with dual batteries, 35lbs in panniers, I weigh 190lbs. That ride killed 65-70% of the battery. No reason to think you couldnāt make a 60 mile round trip on that bike if you are on level ground.
canned_pho@reddit
If you wanna risk getting the cops impounding your ride, along with traffic citation, get a e-moto then. A lot of states now are getting ready to enforce ebike laws more strictly though.
If you wanna keep in stealthy, just build your own CYC mid drive ebike on a reliable MTB frame. CYC motors can go extremely fast, sometimes faster than a Sur Ron on their high end motors.
KitchenDismal9258@reddit
Can you hire a bike on a weekend and actually do the ride?
What you are suggesting isnāt all that practical to do every day. You are looking at 2-2.5 hours of travel time (return) a day plus your 8 or so hours at work.
I commute about 9 miles one way and it takes 35-40mins with an average speed of about 20km/hr. Iāve got a trek with a mid drive motor, no throttle. Max speed with motor is 25 km/hr. I can do much faster going down a hill but that would also mean uphill in the other direction so it all evens out.
I try and ride 2-3 times a week and usually manage it.
30 miles one way, you need to build up some fitness and unless you have nothing else to do other than work and commute, itās not that practical because you are going to be too exhausted and thereās not enough daylight hours to do much else than this.
Youāre looking at an emoto of some description but bike paths are not the place for these unless you are going slow.
nomadrone@reddit
Dude, thatās like 90 minute commute one way on a class 3 e-bike. Ā You probably need something faster than e-bike.Ā
ayhme@reddit
You need a Zero Motorcycle. šļøš
xboxps3@reddit
Or a Stark Varg. If they drop the electric requirement they could get a Honda Grom for half the price.
chrispark70@reddit
You are going to need at least an 18ah battery, probably more like 20ah (or more) and 48v battery.
Speed really costs a lot of energy. If you dropped to 19 or 20mph, you can do it with a smaller battery so long as you can charge at work there aren't a lot of hills and it is generally not that windy. As you get up in speed, your pedaling doesn't even really do much in terms of energy taken from the battery. Energy use goes up exponentially with speed.
Most range estimates are based on low speed, you pedaling and perfect conditions while wearing rose tinted glasses.

What you're proposing isn't practical.
The only thing that would work for you is a Zero motorcycle or equivalent. The new Kawasaki hybrid is very appealing as well. Me in your situation? I would buy a Honda 125 in a heartbeat. Sips gas and is bulletproof.
Don't believe all the hype about ebike battery range. At speeds of 28 mph (which is the legal limit in the USA for Class 3 bikes) you will deplete your battery in half the time. No matter what brand. You'll also be pedaling very hard the entire time, no way around that since throttles typically cut out at 20 mph - and running on pure battery power on throttle will kill your battery at an alarming rate and is VERY, VERY hard on the motor.
Ebikes (and I have two VERY high quality ones made by reputable manufacturers) are nothing more than sophisticated toys. I also have two motorcycles. Pick the right tool for the job.

rpartlan@reddit
if you're not planning on pedalling, maybe you can look into long range electric unicycles. like an extreme bull commander pro. range says 100 miles. so should cover your distance, plus if you can charge at work and at home, should work ok.

El_Guap@reddit
Onyx 80v if you keep it 20-25mph (without big hills) will get you both ways throttle only without a charge at work.

Take the bus.

I am in a similar boat.
Hills and long distence but I dont want to ride the highway I want to ride the trail.
I have been looking into the backcountry scout or mule.

I ride a 800wh battery Raleigh Novas - Iām a plus sized rider (198cm / 155kg). 20km / 12m (with hills) uses 20%ish battery.

40 miles sucks in a car.
You need a motorcycle, not a bike.

you donāt want an ebike, you want an emoto
lee1026@reddit
You can charge any bike battery back to full if you have access to a normal power plug.
You want something with a kwh or so of battery power, which should be good for about 50ish miles (ideal), which translates into good enough for every day use. The batteries are small enough that you can just carry a spare with you.
kaimukirat@reddit
A Specialized Turbo Como (my bike) has a 50 mile range in Sport mode and is a Type 3 with a top speed of 28mph. Itās not cheap, the current model with an internally geared hub is $4K but would probably take you to work and back with a single 100% charge. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPK6Lq19EfA&t=761
ActFew4005@reddit
I can get 40 miles out of my Velotric if I'm putting it on a lower percentage of assist (eco or tour.) Depends on hills though, too. I use more juice coming home uphill than going to work.
InfluenceEfficient77@reddit
40 miles is reasonable. Just get a lectric bike and order a second battery. They're swappable
