Summer evening, windows down, mid/late 90s, what are you driving, what are you listening to, and who is in the car with you?

For me would be my first car, an '83 Oldsmobile Delta 88, The Wallflowers One Headlight always takes me back to summers nights in high school, and my best friend riding beside me.
1101base2@reddit
Ford tempo, 6-9 people in the car (was one of the few people in my friend group with my own car) and probably heading to Denny's at 3am after working at the theater. Most co workers, few friends who also worked in the mall wanting to hang out. Probably listening to the rock station.
YEMolly@reddit
I drove a Tempo too! “The Pimpo”
1101base2@reddit
there were two of us in HS that drove them only one model year different. It was a POS, but also a tank. mine caught on fire, was in a few wrecks but i drove home from all of them, but at the same time i had to do constant maintenance on it (and the vehicle i learned how to work on cars on). i cursed that car a lot when i was breaking my knuckles trying to keep it running, but looking back i have fond memories of it and friends.
YEMolly@reddit
100% all of that. It really was a POS, but driving it as a 16 & 17 year old, looking back, it did quite well ramping curbs and hitting shit. lol

'86 Chrysler New Yorker. It's 1995, the car has no air, no radio, no heat, the door is ajar. Other than that the car runs great and the seats are super comfy. The battery powered boom box in my car is playing RATM, Queen, Metallica, SOAD or The Cranberries.
LooLee is in the car with me cause we are besties, along with my younger sisters. We are going to go camping where I work because employees can camp for free. Just graduated that year and spent as much time with my gals before I left for the Navy in November of '95.

1999 Pontiac Firebird (pewter metallic), t-tops off. Definitely some mixed-cd I burned. Probably Limp Bizkit, Staind, Blink 182, RHCP, or something else along those lines. Probably on my way home from playing basketball with some friends. Man life was good back then.

It's 1997. I'm driving home from high school my senior year. Its 2:10 pm. The highway is empty. I'm in my 89 white Camry. The windows are down, I just lit a cigarette and In the Meantime by Space Hog just came on WAAF. This is the happiest I'll ever be.

Pontiac Grande Am, top 40 radio, me and four friends (someone has to sit bitch in the back). IGA’s the first stop for gummies and AriZonas, then we go too fast down the backroads to the second-run theater (doesn’t matter what’s playing). Decide whether it’s too late to hire the mall. Stop off at a guy’s house, slow idle thru “the nice neighborhood” while blasting the Black Album. Hit the C store for caffeine, visit another friend at work, drive too fast down the backroads with a detour to see if someone (friend? enemy? teacher? cop?) was home, and back to someone’s house for hours of video games.

Picture this. It’s a Friday evening in the summer of 1996, and I’ve just wrapped up my sophomore year at my small (approximately 800 students) county high school. It’s one of those gorgeous Southern Appalachian nights. It was clear, still, and just humid enough to feel the air. I’m cruising down a back country road in my 1987 Chevy S10. She’s beige and a bit ugly, but not a beater by any means. She's got a four-speed manual, and she's my baby. The windows are cranked down, the back slider is open, and the Sony CD deck I installed myself is pushing Dave Matthews Band’s #41 into the night. I’m headed to meet a couple of my cronies, just to drive nowhere with a truck bed full of friends. Who knows what we'll get into.
Jesus, I miss those times so much.

Late 90’s (summer of ‘98), I’ve borrowed my mom’s ‘97 BMW 328ic convertible for the night. Screw windows, the whole top is down. It’s late summer and I am on i95 south heading home (alone) from hanging out with friends on Lincoln Road (Miami Beach). Busy Child by The Crystal Method is pounding through the speakers as I decide to open it up and see what this thing can do. I hit 139mph before I feel it pull back as the governor kicks in slowing fuel flow to the engine. She definitely could have done more but the brochure said 139.5 and I guess they didn’t lie. I do miss that car…

The car ended up burning to the ground. I still have a picture of it in my garage as well as the license plate.

Maybe we're cruising in the Fairmont with high school friends, listening to the kinks or early trent reznor demos (der komissar, uh oh!). An old friend will accidentally lock us out of that car with only an hour to make it to graduation on a crowded shore town island. We made it to the stage in time.
Or maybe it's the motorcycle on the coast. Everything is quiet. Since you're not around... I live in the numbness now in the background. That whole album on repeat.
Coming back at 2 am from the local theater for the Rocky Horror Picture Show, 7 of us jammed into a car that only holds 5. We'd stop at the diner or the denny's. We'd play the radio and it was stuff like Meredith Brooks and Shania Twain and Chumba Wumba.
I think I lived so many lifetimes rolled into one. It's a shame all of my friends didn't quite overlap, so one group ever really knew I had a life outside the other. That was never intentional, it was just a quirk of my weird life. Maybe I was the richer for it, though.

My 1984 Dodge piece of crap (Colt). Radio got stolen (twice) so I’m listening to Green Day or Blink 182 on mini speakers plugged into my discman. Driving home from my job at the movie theater at 1am or going to pick up my best friend from her job at the water park and taking her home .
SnooMuffins7284@reddit
V, the boys and I were pumping Gangstarr and driving loops around the coffee shops in one of our mom's cars. Lol

1991 Nissan Sentra (manual transmission, two door, back window covered in band/record label stickers). Anything on Fat Wreck Chords, Honest Dons, Drive-Thru Records, Asian Man Records, Equal Vision Records, Second Nature Recordings, Revelation Records, Big Wheel Recreation, Doghouse Records, Moose Records (was a local Arizona label), Fueled by Ramen & Fearless Records. Jimmy Eat World during those years always remind me of driving around Arizona at that age 🥹
thejunkmanadv@reddit
This is exactly what I was driving. Then girlfriend with me and another friend or two in the back seat. Windows down, because my car didn't even have AC as an option when new. I did eventually put a "hang on" AC unit under the dash. Gear heads will know what that is. Otherwise on long trips I had a "Comfort Aire" swamp cooler in the passenger window. I even have a short video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaHoNtD6oVg

pug_fugly_moe@reddit
1993 Isuzu Rodeo manual transmission, blasting Fear Factory with my high school buddies.
Leucippus1@reddit
Wasn't the Rodeo what Honda used to make the original Pilot, if you wanted a cheap Honda Pilot you just bought a Rodeo.
But, seriously though, I remember driving stick shift SUVs, those days...

One Headlight also comes to mind for me because I had a 1989 Pontiac 6000. I got into a lil fender bender about a month after buying it, and it was left with one headlight for the rest of the time that I owned it. Googling a picture of it now I don’t recognize the front end because it was damaged for so long haha

It's 1996, I have no friends or self-esteem. I'm driving a 1991 Jeep Cherokee and am stereotypically listening to Marilyn Manson of course. He became a springboard to get into music like Skinny Puppy, Bauhaus, Misfits, etc.

88 Chevy Blazer. Phish playing from a discman with Velcro attaching it to the center council and one of those CD to tape deck adapters. I’m not really sure how that ever worked, but the discman -usually- didn’t skip!!

1973 Chevy Cheyenne 30, it had the stock Delco AM/FM radio in it (and still does) so I'm probably tuned into 95 KGGO, Des Moines classic rock.
Odds are my ride mooching best friend Mark is riding shotgun, his car was a piece of shit (clapped out 1980 Ford Fairmont) and regularly broke down. If he'd spent less money on the sound system, he might have been able to keep that car on the road.
