I've seen a couple of these flying fairly low on a NE flight path over my home near Swindon, England in the last 10 minutes. What are they?

I caught it down in south Devon too! It was a lot higher up down here though 🙁
johnbobk@reddit
It was reasonably low & heading S over us in Corsham, guess it had climbed by the time it got to you. Wonder where it was going 🤔
No-Chair-3167@reddit
I’m not 100% certain but I believe people call those airplanes don’t quote me on that though
johnbobk@reddit
Good spot.

They are grace, power and a massive pile of money. And the demonstration that 60s and 70s engineering was something else. The B1 Lancer.

DukeBannon@reddit
I’ll bite! What is RIAT?
def_not_a_gril@reddit
Royal international air tattoo - biggest military airshow in the world (I think?)
agha0013@reddit
Paris is probably a bit bigger because it has larger industry coverage with commercial and business on top of military whereas RIAT is mostly focused on military
johnbobk@reddit
Yes, Paris is also a sales, commercial meet up rather like Farnborough & combines arms rather than a public air show/ display.
d_repz@reddit
Paris is an Airshow for - new - general aviation aircraft, military and otherwise; RIAT is an airshow for aviation aircraft already in service.
MrMcBigDick@reddit
Also retired aircraft and even a u2!
d_repz@reddit
Indeed, my bad.
Iliyan61@reddit
so parris isn’t a bigger military airshow then
Pocketz7@reddit
Nah RIAT is bigger
agha0013@reddit
digging around online in a few places, Paris seems to have almost twice the visitors and has more exhibits over a larger property than RIAT.
Then Oshkosh is apparently bigger by visitors and aircraft numbers overall but it's a somewhat different kind of event, the fly in portion drives the numbers up quite a bit, and it doesn't have the same primarily corporate focus.
Pocketz7@reddit
The original scope was military airshow
Hot_Hall579@reddit
AKA The Bone.
JohnGazman@reddit
Already? RIAT is still 85 days away.
aka_Handbag@reddit
Now I’m curious how long it is until someone tells us which year it is, based on what’s in the static park!
Blackhawk510@reddit
I was there for that RIAT, too!
johnbobk@reddit
Thanks, yes 1 came over us yesterday; near Corsham. Just had a very, very low C17 which is happening more frequently now ~2 or 3 a week. Guess we are under a Brize Norton track.
tufftricks@reddit
Rockwell B1-B Lancer. Also known as the Bone. Big daddy super sonic bomber that never really reached its true potential
cheetuzz@reddit
what was its full potential? why didn’t it reach it?
NathanArizona@reddit
It’s true potential was doing a super-sonic low level penetration of Russia and dropping nuclear bombs on high value targets. Luckily it never reached its full potential.
lolariane@reddit
Pretty sure full potential is slowly getting back on the menu, unfortunately.
ScarHand69@reddit
Yeah and it was able to fly low level due to a terrain-following radar which is also a giant megaphone that screams “Here I am!”
If it did a shitload of them would have been shot down
bo-monster@reddit
Watching Russian air defense performance in/around Ukraine, I’m starting to wonder just how many really would have been shot down. I think we overestimated the Bear for a long time.
evthrowawayverysad@reddit
I don't doubt that they're overestimated, but they're probably smart enough to have kept a lot of their more advanced hardware out of the conflict with Ukraine, especially if it was joint developed with China, in order to avoid giving valuable sigint data to NATO.
ScarHand69@reddit
Maybe. Don’t forget they shot down Gary Powers at a height they thought untouchable. Even though they were flying fast at treetop height they woulda been a helluva lot easier to hit than a speck on the edge of the atmosphere and the Soviets would have had plenty of warning to prepare.
bo-monster@reddit
No, a speck up high is fairly easy, especially if it flies straight predictable trajectories as the U-2 does. A platform moving fast down low is much harder, even if it’s just because of radio horizon issues. You only get a short time to react. Add terrain and it becomes even harder.
You only need to look at the success the Ukrainians had with various cruise missiles to see the failings of the Russian systems. Often the cruise missiles would fly right by S-400 batteries on their way to targets in Crimea. Sometimes, the S-400 equipment WAS the target. In all cases, the S-400 performed much worse than expected. Tor and Buk haven’t had many successes either. The biggest threat is a soldier with a MANPADS.
NathanArizona@reddit
Ok
titsmuhgeee@reddit
It was originally conceived as a bomber that had the Mach 2 speed of the B-58 Hustler, combined with the payload of the B-52 Stratofortress. The original project was cancelled in 1977 due to the introduction of cruise missiles and stealth technology making the B-2 feasible, making the B-1 obsolete. It was restarted in 1981 when the B-2 project started to drag out far longer than expected, leaving the USAF behind in bomber technology.
StephenHunterUK@reddit
Carter got raked over the coals for that decision at the time.

Goodbye OP. Let us know if you live.
AardQuenIgni@reddit
Fun story, I used to live in a tiny town called Tye, Tx. My house was right under the flight path of Dyess AFB where a lot of these are stationed. We were so close to the base that you could see the pilots from your porch as they flew over, so obviously these things were loud.
But one night around 2am I don't know what happened but the pilot hit his afterburners and it rocked the house so bad, things fell off the shelf. I jumped out of bed thinking it was some kind of explosion. Wife and dogs losing their minds. We chose to go back to bed and worry about the broken pictures and things in the morning.
That next morning I had a meeting with a guy in town and when I got to his office he was furiously typing in one of those "contact us, we'd love to hear from you" feedback boxes on the USAF website. He said he was complaining about that noise and he was expecting something to "be done about it". To no one's surprise but his own, no one got back in touch with him.
