What do you think about the President of the European Commission, grouping Turkey together with China and Russia? Will this affect the country's candidate status?

Look within Some parts in Europe are more related to turkey rather than western countries. This is by design
TheRedBaron-7@reddit
Scaring people over 'Turkish influence' is so funny.
A) Over who or what EU-related thing does Turkey actually have influence? I mean proper influence, where Turkey can assert its power over a thing or somebody. B) Isn't Turkey a EU candidate and a member of the European Council? Why would you attack a regional partner like that by comparing them to two countries who actually try to seize political power in the EU by bribing politicians?

Germany is part of Europe and DITIB has a massive amount of influence in Germany and their mosques are known for well being more than just a little bit political in their messaging.
TheRedBaron-7@reddit
Please, can you elaborate how DITIB influences German society, the German state and German politics?
drecais@reddit
They organize protests like very famously against the recognition of the genocide against the armenians committed by the ottoman empire under leadership of the young turks.
After the invasion of Syria by turkish troops they asked their mosques to incorporate a prayer for their troops victory.
They influence millions of muslims in germany with that talk and thats not even mentioning all the anti kurdish sentiment being spread.
A DITIB mosque had a play going on about Gallipoli like cmon I didnt know that was part standard Islamic Education and prayer lmfao
Its literally a religious institution from another country being the most influential force in the second most popular religion within Germany. Of course they have influence and they use it.
TheRedBaron-7@reddit
I asked you how they influence the life of everday Germans, or the German state, or the broader German society. You are telling me that they are organzing protests, incorporating prayers for soldiers, doing plays about Gallipoli.
I hope you feel ridiculous after you read your point again. Yea, prayers for soldiers in Syria. How dangerous. Almost as bad as directly putting your spies as consultants to members of European Parliament, like China did with Maximilian Krah.
drecais@reddit
When Million of Muslims have religious guidance that is influenced and gets their talking Points dictated by the turkish state you dont think this is influenced LMFAO you are either ignorant or just really stupid pick one
TheRedBaron-7@reddit
DITIB is observed by the German homeland intelligence service buddy. The German state asks DITIB to organize Islamic schoolings for its schools. I am not saying that Turkey doesn't influence DITIB. I am just saying that DITIB does not influence the German state. It does not hold any political or economical power.
Please, when you are outside, tell people that Turkey has a large influence over Germany, and please count how many people will laugh in your face after you said that. I'll wait.

The 18th century German model of plainsight colonization featuring mass scale, one-way. organised legal migration, with dense foreign-loyal exclave settlements, established by foreign-leveraged individuals serving ulterior goal.
Modern day Turkey is naturally far better suited for that model given Turkish migrants answer only before Turkey. Can be extremely easily organised towards some sort of political purpose as diaspora, reside only within their own exclusively Turkish settlements. Don't mix with the locals nor succumb to assimilation effort, and are practically soley attributed for the functioning of well over 40% of the German Economy- On paper all of this could be problematic in the case of an bad actor who decides to capitalise of all of those factors, but I think what pisses Ursula the most is the voting potential & ideology front:
-In Romania she needed to result towards delegitimization of the first election tour & conscription of Hungarians for the second voting, all and all just so her party could gain the upper hand. That's a lot of effort.
-In Bulgaria Turks stereotypically engage in organised voting campaign towards DPS with well over 99% support, consistently enabling DPS to be the 3rd political power in Bulgaria. If all of those votes had been relocated towards PPDB (her chosen kompromat party) PPDB's support would spike from <10%, to >50% without the need for drastic foreign intervention on her part.
-Turks in Germany might also be humble enough as to tolerate exploitation and disrespect, but they aren't stupid enough as to do her bidding. They won't vote for CDU just because she tells them to, they might be willing to go as far as to vote for AFD if they feel like it would better suit their interests.
-Turkey as a state also doesn't drink the EU ideology alongside the cool aid. While all of Europe collectively lobotomised it's energy sector by making themselves exclusively depended on Russian gas, and then cut all supply of said Russian Gas for the sake of Ukraine, Turkey capitalised on the situation by securing trade deals with Russia and selling Russian gas towards the EU for 4x the price.
TheRedBaron-7@reddit
>Modern day Turkey is naturally far better suited for that model given Turkish migrants answer only before Turkey. Can be extremely easily organised towards some sort of political purpose as diaspora, reside only within their own exclusively Turkish settlements.
1) You don't have any proof for that because there is none 2) 3 million people with Turkish roots live in Germany and only 700,000 people took part in the last elections in Turkey. That's not even a third. 3) Numbers have a slight inaccuracy, but studies suggest that Turks vote accross the political spectrum in Germany. Also for parties that have an agenda that some would call Anti-Turkey and 4) there are no 'exclusive-to-Turks' settlements left in Germany. If anything, Duisburg-Marxloh is seen as an exclusive Romanian/Bulgarian settlement in Germany that is being viewed as a problem. Berlin-Neukölln has a large Arabic population nowadays, and Kreuzberg is currently mixed. We have politicians with Turkish roots in German parliament that take a hard stance on Turkey on foreign politics, so please.
>In Romania she needed to result towards delegitimization of the first election tour & conscription of Hungarians for the second voting, all and all just so her party could gain the upper hand. That's a lot of effort.
The fuck have Turks to do with Romanian elections? If you try to compare Hungarian influence in Romania and Turkish influence in Germany, Hungarians make up 6% of Romania while Turks make up 3% in Germany. Germany, the country with the largest Turkish diaspora, has only a Turkish population of 3%. Wow, what an influence.
>In Bulgaria Turks stereotypically engage in organised voting campaign towards DPS with well over 99% support, consistently enabling DPS to be the 3rd political power in Bulgaria. If all of those votes had been relocated towards PPDB (her chosen kompromat party) PPDB's support would spike from <10%, to >50% without the need for drastic foreign intervention on her part.
They aren't Turkish migrants, they are a centuries old minority and acknowledged as such in your constitution. If you say Turkey has influence over Bulgaria because of that, then Hungary has influence over Romania and Slovakia according to your logic. If you tell that to any political scientist, they will laugh to your face.
>-Turks in Germany might also be humble enough as to tolerate exploitation and disrespect, but they aren't stupid enough as to do her bidding. They won't vote for CDU just because she tells them to, they might be willing to go as far as to vote for AFD if they feel like it would better suit their interests.
Again, Turks in Germany vote accross the political spectrum. It's not the 80s anymore where Turks would solely vote for leftist parties. Even if we would assume that we have the 80s circumstances where 70% of the Turkish vote would go to the German Social Democrats, again, you would be laughed at in Germany if you would say that Turkey has influence over the SPD.
The last point I don't really understand, because how does that show us that Turkey has influence in the EU?
LibertyChecked28@reddit
I go by the articles about Osmanen Germania and Grey Wolves, obviously not every Turk is part of those organizations, but all of their members are Turks who seek support of the Turkish diaspora.
I talked about the elections in Germany, not those in Turkey. If Germany has greater influence over Turkey than vice versa the EU entities take it for granted and conveniently choose to ignore it for the exact same reason no one talks about Brussels dirty deeds.
Yes, those people look after their own individual interests over Ursula's ambitions, and Ursula conveniently gets to blame them alongside other migrants for ''all of EU's woes''.
I wanted to draw parallel between the Hungarians and Turks. Both are used as EU scape goats, and both are braded as ''Torjan horses undermining the EU'', and yet the Hungarains are among the most convenient EU tools\servants where as Turks stem more towards average diaspora who just wants to mind its own business- and not being a [tool] only ''reconfirms'' the Trojan horse allegations within the minds of the European Elite.
Hungary does have influence over Romania, but the difference is Hungary lends said influence towards the EU as to further solidify it. If Brussels sees that Romania ''acts naughty'' and their only people there are the Hungarian minority in Transilvania, they will have further incentive to amplify the Hungarians over ''the naughty Romanians'' in transilvania- and vice versa, if the Hungarians in Transilvania are the only entity within Romania that goes against the EU, Brussels will quietly purge them by the fast procedures.
Right now as we speak the Bulgarian State TV is airing DW production for the Hungarians in Transilvania called ''Reviving the Magyar Spirit'' or some similar $h!t where they complain about Romanian assimilation- Months prior DW used to post productions how Bulgarians and Romanians are ''the same people'', but after the elections in Romania they went full 180 on that.
There are two things you need to know about EU politic: 1) When Mommy tells you to take the Cyanide Pill you are supposed to sallow the whole box. 2) The only ones allowed to scheme their way to success are the Cabbage Eaters, if anyone follows its own interests by capitalizing on a situation that can benefit them they are guilty of first degree treason ''undermining EU unity''.
Turkey defector became Europe's only energy supplier who had no intentions to undercut itself for ''pleading looks''- this wasn't the plan. The only ones whom ware supposed to benefit from the Embargo on Russian Gas ware the ones who sneakily had build North Stream 2 in anticipation for a War in Eastern Europe. Turkey ''shoud've had'' secured EU brownie points by entering a voluntary self-destructive energy crisis like the rest of us, while turning EU's pitiful attempt of trade embargo into something actually meaningful by bulling all of Asia into following it. You did the complete opposite, thus why [Turkey holds Anti-Eu influence].
Aulawabe@reddit
Kosovo and Bosnia. Lets be clear, EU sees Bosnia and Kosovo as independent countries, just like Turkey, but they don't want muslim influence over it.
Heck even I as a Serb hate that double standards of theirs.
TheRedBaron-7@reddit
Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I would argue that Serbia has a much more significant influence over Bosnia than Turkey has. And Serbia is also viewed as the evil, pro-Russian and pro-Chinese entity by the West.
So why is she not adding Serbia to that list? When Serbia isn‘t even a NATO member but Turkey is? Turkey‘s activities in Bosnia and Kosovo do not collide with Western interests, in contrary, they are pretty much in line. It is, like you said, typical and hysterical Islamophobia by German conservatives.
Aulawabe@reddit
I'm Serb from Bosnia. I would say Serbia has just as much influence over Bosnia as vice versa. We where one country and our markets today function almost like they did before. We are to small to be separated. Turkey has never been part of our "world" so they are viewed as an external "threat". Not because you simply are Turks but mostly because of Islam and the fact that you are a regional power.
I wouldn't say Serbia is viewed as evil. Serbia gets more western investments than Bosnia, Montenegro, Macedonia and Kosovo combined. I think you can add Albania to that list as well and it would be about the same.
I'm not saying Europeans don't want to cooporate with Muslims, but they don't want islamic countries to influecne Europe. It's nothing new to be honest, that has been since 100 of years back.

Narrow_Safety_957@reddit
Turkey is an absolute dictatorship experting refugees to EUnfor influence. It is all about beying democratic and normal which turkey isn't
TheRedBaron-7@reddit
That's so funny. Was Turkey democratic some weeks ago when von der Leyen campaigned for stronger ties with Turkey? Was Turkey democratic when EU leaders campaigned for Turkey (+ Ukraine) and its military industrial complex to be a key part of a future European Army?
And Turkey has not nor does currently 'export' refugees to the EU. And Erdogan enjoys the personal cheques too much for keeping the refugees in the country, so he won't export those to Europe any time soon.
Narrow_Safety_957@reddit
Lol. Suddenly nobody is landing on Greek shores.
defnotachicken@reddit
Do you think if Turkey lets the refugees in EU, the refugees will use the dangerous and expensive see route or land route?
TheRedBaron-7@reddit
If you ever thought that a confrontation between Turkey and Greece was anything more than just simply and cheaply gaining votes from nationalists and consolidating his own base, I have a bridge to sell.
Narrow_Safety_957@reddit
Lol, who said attacking Greece?
TheRedBaron-7@reddit
Got it, you mean refugees landing on Greek shores, not Turkish troops (because that's also a baseless fearmongering claim). There were 850,000 sea arrivals on Greek shores coming from Turkey in the year of 2015. In 2016, it was 173,000. In 2016, Turkey and the EU made the deal so Turkey will stop migrants from going to the EU. After 2016, the number dropped all the way to only 4,000 sea arrivals in 2021 and never exceeded 54,000 arrivals since then. And still, Frontex and UNHCR don't know if all of the arrivals come from Turkey or if they do come from Libya, Egypt and Tunisia.
Either A) give me a proof that Turkey is actively 'exporting' migrants to the EU, B) stop purposefully lying on the internet or C) open a book once in a while.

Bapistu-the-First@reddit
The combined EU is the strongest military on earth after the USA. It's lunacy to suggest the EU is done for without NATO. If anything, without the US, NATO or something likewise will transform in an European army.
Turkey indeed has a big military and lots of in-house production capabilities, they've come a very long way. One of the strongest militaries there is but the combined might of European militaries is stronger.
gokkai@reddit
"Combined EU army" is an oxymoron. Never going to happen.
LibertyChecked28@reddit
Eurofighers are economic, the Nordic experimental hardware is cute, and the Checzh arm production used to be cool back in the soviet block, but lets not pretend that this could go anywhere.
If the EU bureaucracy needed to choose between 5000 modern CV90s or 20 $h!tty decommissioned Panzers from the cold war they would aways get fucking lobbied to chose the Panzer turds.
Shaolinpower2@reddit
'Combined' part is the problem. EU cannot act as a solid country. As long as you keep having 'every veto granted' idea, you'll never manage to surpass the enormous burocrasy it brings.
Iterative_Ackermann@reddit
The problem with "combined" european forces is not that they are missing numbers but they are missing key components by design. USA is providing a good portion of components that allow NATO forces to act as one. Namely most of the CCC infrastructure, EW, missile defence, awacs and almost all of satellite and electronic intelligence, key logistics components like refuellers, all critical service and software control of F35s. None of these are things Europe cannot do, but these all are things Europe have not yet done. Not in the required numbers anyway. If you pull US out of NATO today, NATO will not function at all. And without NATO all the high tech wizz of European forcws are just very expensive toys.
This is not a comparison between Europe and Turkey because, while Turkey has been forced to fill in some of the gaps, for fear of being embergoed when fighting against a NATO member - Turkey also lacks technological and industrial prowess of Europe. Turkey will be similarly hosed, losing the ability to coordinate with other (ex-)NATO forces if US pulls out. The reason I am writing this is because people are delusional if they think NATO minus US is not ineffective by design. It is. US made NATO this way and we all have complied for half a century.
Xela8Xe@reddit
You are aware that despite it's shit economy Turkey has one of the best militaries in the world?

Iterative_Ackermann@reddit
You are so badly misinformed. Turkey has little power projection capacity because for the last 50 years we are getting ready for a three front defensive war with Kurdish insurgents in the mix. The idiots in Greece are aware of the Turkish military might but think this is some kind of offensive militarization and bankrupting themselves to match, while most of the rest of Europe is just unaware of Turkish military power and think we are some kind of big Slovenia. Neither is true. There is only one army that can beat Turkey on our home kamd without using nukes and it is the united fucking states.
elixxirumoflife@reddit
If Turkey wants, can conquer the whole Kavkaz,so Europe is definitely not a problem especially that they get lots of weapons from Israel and China. I’d not underestimate turks like that, for real.

Iterative_Ackermann@reddit
Not really. I mean we might be able to win any battle in the region against any of the local military forces but conquering means control over the land and the peoples. We certainly cannot do that. We would be eaten alive by the insurgency.

It’s telling that the President of the European Commission sees Turkey as an “outside threatening influence” like Russia or China, rather than a “partner” like all other candidate countries are seen. Never mind that Turkey has been part of the Western alliance for many decades, including NATO and many European institutions, unlike either Russia or China.
The fact that Turkish citizens still need a visa even to visit the EU as tourists, let alone Turkey’s doomed EU membership bid, was never about democratic record (even though that definitely needs to improve). The EU grants visa free access to several GCC countries, who are, let’s face it, not democracies. It’s this historical animosity against Turkey that still to this day rears its head at every chance it gets and is sometimes blurted out by even the most senior of EU politicians. I wish we would stop pretending it’s all based on objective criteria, democracy etc, or that the ball is completely in Turkey’s court.
Bapistu-the-First@reddit
She went way way out of her line with this comment and put her own interest and, as it looks like agenda, above those of the EU.
Turkey indeed has been Western aligned since the early days of NATO. They most definitely don't deserve such weird statement like this. She clearly has an agenda that doesn't align with EU interests.
PartyMarek@reddit
Turkey has been the least West aligned West aligned nation for quite some time already. Countries which joined the EU and NATO much later are much more West aligned than Turkey.
Turkey isn't aiming to cooperate with the EU to become one powerful force. They are aiming to become influential on their own, swinging whichever way is most beneficial for them. At this point Turkey simply isn't a reliable ally with a unpredictable de facto dictator in power.
Lizard_Of_Roz@reddit
It’s a chicken or the egg situation. Consistently getting the cold shoulder and hypocrisy from the EU has pushed Turkey away as well, which sent it to look for ways to chart alternate courses. So again, let’s not play this BS blame game of “it’s all Turkey’s fault.” The EU would always find excuses to not let Turkey in, even if we jumped through all the hoops. It goes back to tribalism essentially, created by religious differences at its core, going back centuries.
I’m not in favor of some of those alternate courses Turkey has tried to chart btw. Siding with other autocratic powers or neo-Ottomanism aren’t viable solutions. For what it’s worth, I think further integrating with the West is the only “North Star” we should be following. Provided the West also lets it happen.

You know who has? The fcken russians.
Apatride@reddit
What are you on about? Nobody cares enough about Bulgaria to nuke it. As for the other things, I can only assume you are talking about WW2 where Bulgaria was in the Axis and one of the main reasons why Bulgarians, a very mixed race, haven't been enslaved or worse by the 3rd Reich (these guys were really big on purity of race) is because many Soviets died to prevent this. At least BG did not eagerly participate in the slaughter of Jews and civilians, unlike Ukraine...
shredded_accountant@reddit
No, no, and no.
The russians regularly threaten all of Europe with nuclear strikes. The russians throttled gas supply in Feb. of 2022 in order to freeze us to death. They even made a video about the Danube freezing. The russian blew up munitions storages in Bulgaria and Czech Republic from 2014 onwards. The russians conducted a cyber attack, disrupting my work in 2022.
An Eurp bureaucrat has never wronged me in my life. But the russian state has.
Apatride@reddit
No, they say that if things keep on escalating, this is a possible outcome. And this is absolutely correct. The idea of the MAD doctrine stops working when was on these countries is about to be destroyed anyway.
The same who haven't stopped their supply to Europe despite Europe saying they will stop buying in a year and despite having plenty of customers? BTW, what should we say of the (officially) Ukrainians who blew up NordStream, regularly threatened to stop gas supply through their territory to strong-hand the EU into giving them more money? What about US/Israel who attacked Iran for now reason, triggering an expected blockade of all oil/gas from the Middle-East. All of this supported by Euro bureaucrats...
Allegedly. But even if true, weapons storage and factories, when used to supply your enemy, have always been fair game.
Now how do you like the price of petrol? It is a direct consequence of decisions taken by the EU who dragged us into an economic war with Russia after going against nuclear energy, forcing us to depend from the US and Middle East (which the US has now fucked up). Did you know that even if the government wanted to lower the VAT so people can buy petrol at a more affordable price, they are not allowed to? Spain tried, the EU forbade them to help their people.
But I guess some people in Bulgaria and the Balkans need a master to serve. Ottomans, Nazis, Commies, EU... Anyone will do as long as they decide for us.

This is not far fetched. A united european identity emerged to counter ottomans
UsernameNineBillion@reddit
Not quite the case... For more than 160 years western europe didn't even help Hungary fight off the Ottomans.
It was the Polaks, Balkan revolutioners and russian empire that helped Hungary. Since Russians had 18 wars with Ottomans for nearly span of 500 years who were the ones that actually defeated the Ottomans.
The Western Europeans literally just came at the end to start splitting broken empire at the end of 19th century.
If it wasn't polaks and russian empire to help Hungarians hold them off, ottomans would have reached all the way to northern ireland.
Pompaci3125@reddit
This is historically inaccurate. Western Europe absolutely fought the Ottomans.
The Holy League at Lepanto (1571) included Spain, Venice, the Papal States, Genoa and other Italian states, and destroyed much of the Ottoman fleet. The Great Turkish War (1683-1699) wasn’t just Hungarians, Poles and Russians either. The Habsburg monarchy, German states of the Holy Roman Empire, Venice and Poland all fought the Ottomans. The Ottoman defeat at Vienna in 1683 involved large Austrian and German forces alongside the Polish army of Jan Sobieski.
Venice fought multiple long wars against the Ottomans for centuries. Spain fought Ottoman-aligned forces in the Mediterranean. Portugal fought Ottoman influence in the Indian Ocean. Even earlier, western crusaders fought the Ottomans at Nicopolis (1396) and Varna (1444).
And ironically Britain and France often did the opposite of what you claim they frequently tried to preserve the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century because they feared Russian expansion. Look at the Crimean War.
Russia was definitely one of the biggest factors in Ottoman decline, and Balkan uprisings mattered a lot too. But saying “Western Europe never fought them” is simply false.
Signal-Dog9356@reddit
The westerners helped Greece to gain our independence in 1821-26 period. Our first king was also a Bavarian. Of course helping Greece create our nation was a nod to the great ancient civilization and the European ideas and ideals about it, but it was help anyway
UsernameNineBillion@reddit
In 1820..... Ottomans were knocking on Viena's doors since 1530's...... but why France and Britain bother.... the mountains protect them, oh the hungarians protect them.
Almost 300 fking years ... and do you know the real reason Britain and France decided to help Greece gets its independence ????
Because Britain and France primarily did it to prevent further Russian expansion.
Do you know what happened 20 years after Greece got its independence? Same Britain and France went onto helping Ottomans taking Crimea off of the Russians....
And do you know why Britain and France did this? Because Russians were threatening their own imperialistic interests in the middle east and caucasus... because Britain had influence over the region since the early 18th century....
It was mainly because of the expand of the Russian empire.
BriaorMead@reddit
Realistically Ottoman Empire couldn't expand anywhere that's far northwest of the Alps. Every campaign they launched started from the capital. It simply isn't realistic unless the empire splits in half to deal with the threats on the east simultaneously. Maybe taking over the Italian peninsula with a better navy but it's not that likely.
Also, Hungary was defeated long before Ottoman Empire started breaking. Austria & their allies did more tbh. Balkan revolutionaries weren't the cause but instead were the effect when it comes to the fall of the Ottoman Empire. You are right about Russia though.
UsernameNineBillion@reddit
Realistically true. I was just a bit more descriptive than should have been.

w/o Russian Empire, Turkey would 100% be holding significant land across Europe, to this day.

I am not sure why would you think Israeli influence towards US (which is a debated topic) is relevant to Israeli influence towards EU.
blckmagicalunicorn@reddit
Even if we entertain the idea that Israel doesn't have any influence in the EU, if Israel influences the US, and due to US and the EU having a lot of agreements, trading deals, a lot of companies doing business, etc. wouldn't it follow that influence on the US indirectly influences the EU?

The exact quote:
"Im Gespräch mit ZEIT‑Chefredakteur Giovanni di Lorenzo beantwortete von der Leyen Fragen, die von Lesern und Leserinnen an die ZEIT gesandt worden waren. Von der Leyen plädierte dabei auch dafür, die EU zu erweitern. »Es muss uns gelingen, den europäischen Kontinent zu vervollständigen, damit er nicht russisch, türkisch oder chinesisch beeinflusst wird. And Tayyip has came into power decades after TRNC was established. If he dies tomorrow inşallah not a single thing will change in Turkey's Cyprus policy. It has been shown after 2004 and Cyprus's EU ascention that no good faith reconcialation with the Greek side is possible. Turkey will force the issue of an independent TRNC regardless of the ruling party in Turkey. This will either end in total defeat (island unified under greek maximalist demands) or TR victory (island will be divided legally with the north aligned with Turkish Republic) but it will take time either way. It will take until one side is much weaker than the other, to force the issue, which is not at all the case now. And Turkish Cypriots will not like it and they will be right to not like it and it will not make a difference either way.
Iterative_Ackermann@reddit

Iterative_Ackermann@reddit
EU in its current form is not something worth joining. Germany has all of you by the balls and there is didly squat you can do anything about it. All the posturing of France is trying to break free and get a smidgen of sovereignity, which is unlikely to succeed with that economy and especially as their economy is actively crippled by Frankfurt.
We western oriented Turks that wanted to join EU were always trying to use European ideals to control islamist and dictatorial streams in Turkish politics. It was about the process. We lost, partially due to Erdogan having been supported immensely by the EU for thw first decade pf his dismantling of republics immune system. Now there is zero utility of being a member. We may still will the internal battle against islamists but Europe is all but a hinderance. You lost your way. European union has to loosen intra member ties, give monetary and political freedom to its members, and in the unlikely case they do that, they will extend to and embrace Turkey. Until then, being a member of the union is worthless for us and imho for you as well.

Fantastic! Pick your fights EU. It is unclear to me, whether Turkey+EU can withstand Russia, while USS is busy with China and that is what I am hoping for when the sanity returns to the continent. I am bewildered how much EU thinks of its own strength. If you are against these three countries and are already abandoned by US, you can just give up now to save everybody a lot of time and yourself a lot of pain.
New_Parking9991@reddit
turkey is abandoned by US?
goktug03@reddit
Im sorry but what makes you people think that Turkey will tolerate this any longer? I disagree with the person below, we can be allies with Russia or China. Do you think a swedish guy would agree supporting Turkey or even going there as a soldier if there have ever been a war? You guys dont like us, and we dont need you in return. America has abandoned you, and soon i believe Turkey will too. I hope EU can "stand strong" on their own when corrupted politicians like merz and leyen bring you to war with Russia.
New_Parking9991@reddit
Tolerate what exactly? I dont get it.
Europe already has trade deals and even military arms deals that are beneficial for your country. Most countries are also allied through NATO.
So i dont understand the problem here, at the end of the day if you feel USA or Russia are more reliable allies and you can find better trade deals with them and that turkish people will be safer exiting military alliance with EU countries and enter one with China or Russia. Then you can go ahead and do so.
There is not much more EU can do.
goktug03@reddit
Tolerate being grouped with Russia. EU's only option to fight against Russia is France and Germany, lets be real. I dont understand what makes EU so free to choose who they want to group people with. The entire union is dependent economically on America for tech and india for workers. Every year vdl and similar people say that EU should be more independent. Independent from who? It is dependent entirely on Nato, which has USA as the strongest and Turkey with the second biggest army. What im trying to say is there is no being independent for EU. The union is dependent to other countries from its very core.
New_Parking9991@reddit
The reason EU is not fighting Russia is because people dont want to escalate to nuclear war. If russia had no nukes the war would not last long.
EU and non US nato, spend close to 600 billion, and if EU spend similar to what Russia is spending in war economy it would be above trillion. There is not only Germany and France in EU. Second Turkey is not comparable to US or other even other EU countries combined. It is a strong country EU would rather have neutral than allied with Russia that is why many trade deals and looking the other way on many of its dealings. In particual Spain and Italy and more have made deals to help you with your military industry which again also helps EU countries temporarily till theirs get better prepared.
EU is not taking advantage of Turkey in any way, and statements like ones(which have context btw) make sense, EU is a union of countries with policies and goals ideally we want independence from all non EU countries.
I disagree the problem is political above all else. Dependence on US was for security and naivety and dependence on Russia was out of greed.
There is no need to repeat mistake with Turkey, as turkey in the first place does not bring what US did nor what Russia did with resources.
EU independence is a matter of political will and nothing else.
Iterative_Ackermann@reddit
No, we can never be allies with Russia. We have been fighting them for the last 400 years. Post ww1 is the longest we have gone without a major war. And also Russia and China can never be bff either. Geopolitica dictate Turkey is part of European politics.

Turkey is not seriously an EU candidate. It will take massive changes in that country before it is even considered reasonably for inclusion in the EU. And, honestly, there are limits to the EU expansion. Because, if Turkey gets included, then why not Morocco and Algeria? Why not Lebanon?
The EU should be limited to European countries that have forged a common history for the last 2000 years. There are not that many things that hold Europe together, but common values and history (to a great extent) allow for some homogeneity that can be the basis of a deeper integration in the future.
TheRedBaron-7@reddit
By that logic, can we kick out Hungarians out of the EU because they came only in 900 AD? So 1100 years of common history is okay, but for some reason we draw a line at 700 years of Turkish presence in Europe? Just arbitrary, made up stuff.
And common history? Which history do you in Greece share with an Estonian or an Irishman? Please elaborate. Which common history does Georgia have with the Netherlands? And common values? How are Pride parades perceived in Berlin, Paris and Amsterdam and how are they perceived in Warsaw, Athens and Sofia?
Or are we talking about Europe in a geographic sense? Istanbul is far closer to Brussels than Tblissi is. Cyprus is not considered as Europe, neither is Malta.
Maybe, just maybe, we should finally come to the conclusion that the EU is nothing more than an economic union. The moment you take away the European Economic Area, the EU becomes worthless and will crumble instantly. And Turkey is more or less integrated into European economy for 31 years now via the Customs Union.
ADRzs@reddit
> we draw a line at 700 years of Turkish presence in Europe?
Obviously, this is not what I said. Please read my post before replying. The Hungarians were a menace when they first arrived, but they espoused Christianity and every other European mode. And the Magyars did indeed show up in the 10th century CE, but the place was not empty; the integrated well with the existing population.
I have nothing against Turkey, but you need to admit that from the very beginning, the Ottoman Turks were hostile to everything European. They were engaged in continuous war against European countries (with virtually no break) and embraced, for most of their history, the "fighting Islam" giving little mercy to the "infidels". And, on top of that, they perpetrated the first genocide of the 20th century. So, there is a lot to pack here. As a culture, it was totally divergent from the foundations of the Greco-Roman culture and law, the Christianity of the Middle Ages, the Humanism and art of the Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo Periods, and certainly way out of the Age of Enlightenment and the Rise of the Modern. I am sure that the modern urban Turkish society has possibly transcended that, but there is a lot of cultural baggage there that is totally incompatible with the traditions that built Europe. I am sure that you would agree.
Of course, there is no reason why Turkey should not be an associate member participating in the trade deals of the EU, but a deeper integration of Europe requires also a deeper cultural similarity. It is a member of the Customs Union, so, there is a lot of trade integration already
TheRedBaron-7@reddit
So it is about religion, thanks for confirming. Why is the EU so keen on accepting Bosnia, Albania and Kosovo then?
Ottomans were not hostile to everything European. After the Conquest of Constantinople, Ottomans aspired to be Europeans. Mehmed II called himself Kayser-i-Rûm, the Roman Emperor, because that's where they wanted to go. Yes, 'fighting for the glory of Islam' was a thing, you are right about that. And anti-Christian pogroms and oppression was also a thing, I am not going to deny that. But the Ottoman dynasty itself was not anti-Christian. They kept the Patriarchy of Constantinople alive for that specific reason, to continue the Roman heritage. Anatolia was not looked after when Ottomans drove further into Europe. The vast majority of investments flowed into Ottoman Europe. The flourishing cities were Thessaloniki, Skopje and Belgrade.
And speaking about Christianity: you know as well as me that one coherent Christian culture/Christian unity was never a thing in modern Europe. Two examples: First, Britain and France did not hesitate to drop Greece in the Greco-Turkish war after it was apparent that the Turkish nationalists were about to win that war. Second, the saying 'I'd rather have a Turkish turban than a Latin mitra' comes from your beautiful people.
I agree that there is a part of the Turkish population is not compatible with the European style of living, I won't argue that. But I will still argue that the EU is not about cultural similarity, and that's ok, we don't have to agree on anything.
The EU won't accept Turkey mainly because of political reasons. Seats in the European Parliament are dashed out according to the size of the countrys population. Turkey would be instantly the country with the most seats in Brussels. That's the real reason why the major EU members will never allow Turkey in.
ADRzs@reddit
>So it is about religion, thanks for confirming. Why is the EU so keen on accepting Bosnia, Albania and Kosovo then?
Did you read my post? It is not about religion, is it?? Read it again.
Now, to reply to some items that you have raised:
> But the Ottoman dynasty itself was not anti-Christian. They kept the Patriarchy of Constantinople alive for that specific reason, to continue the Roman heritage
Please, you know what is real, I am sure. The only reason that the Ottomans kept the Patriarchy was to profit from the hostility between the Orthodox Christians under their control against the Catholics. This did benefit the Ottomans tremendously at leat until the the beginning of the 18th century. And they were not too kind to their Christian subjects, were they???
>The vast majority of investments flowed into Ottoman Europe, because it was the upmost priority for Ottomans to be seen as a European power. The flourishing cities were Thessaloniki, Skopje and Belgrade.
Investments? The Ottomans main investments were in war. There was not a single European country by their borders that they did not attack. Come on, you know that this is true. Flourishing cities???? I have direct experience of some of these. In the mid-19th century, these were places of poverty and destitution, a pale facsimile of cities in Western and Northern Europe. In an advanced country, these places would have exceeded the splendor of Vienna (considering the trade possibilities). But they were dark, dirty, disheveled and poor. I can provide you with countless photos of these cities in the late 19th century and you can compare them with equivalent European ones. Want to play??
>But I will still argue that the EU is not about cultural similarity, and that's ok, we don't have to agree on anything.
Yes, you can argue, but it would not be a successful argument. There is a strong Greco-Roman substratum everywhere in Europe, totally lacking in Turkey. There is Christianity in terms of culture mainly and tradition; and many of the countries have been parts of conglomerates for a long time, sharing political and cultural history.
>The EU won't accept Turkey mainly because of political reasons. Seats in the European Parliament are dashed out according to the size of the countrys population.
Trust me, had Turkey been a Christian and European country, this would not have been a problem. I think that Europe's approach to multiculturalism has been "poisoned" by the fact that Islamic communities have been so resistant (and potentially hostile) to assimilation. Maybe this is not going to be a problem in 100 years, but it is one now. And maybe it is not totally enlightened, but it is the reality

We can argue about how Western aligned Turkey is with how it's a founding member of the European Council or how it's still part of many European institutions but I don't think that's even needed atp.
Are Turkish people European? Personally, no. Maybe the population of most western provinces can be considered culturally closer to the worldview of EU but knowing how strong the conservative views are in the eastern parts, I'd not really.

Dude, what are you on about? Turkish Cypriots, with the support of Turkey have already voted overwhelmingly in favor of reunification in 2004. It was the Greek side that refused the reunification.

Occupation? If it was occupation that area would be the 82nd city of Turkey but instead it is a state right that was recognized by Turkey right?

A much delayed reaction from the EU. For years they have been busy licking Erdogan’s Islamist lover awss, fed him with millions of euros for him to keep immigrants away from the west.
Hence they turned a blind eye on every Nato, European Human Rights breach he made for 2,5 decades. They refused to see him as a proper outsider, moreover a secret enemy of the EU. They were busy with more immediate problems like Orban, Brexit, Le Pen, now that some of them are sorted EU finally declare Erdogan’s administration as the enemy of the union.
They should have stated it years ago.

The usual "always on the line" Balkan countries are the last ones they have to bargain. After that, geographically, EU reached its limits.

I don't think turkey can influence any country, we are a loser country with a shit currency and we keep electing loser leaders. How will we be even influencing Europe?
DenyDerpy@reddit
we elect nothing. we have been held hostage for long years. this is just a reality show
CypriotGreek@reddit
Not really surprising. Turkey has kept fairly close economic and political ties with both Russia and China, so being grouped alongside them isn’t coming out of nowhere. You can’t keep playing both sides and expect zero pushback from anyone.
I’m not exactly a fan of Ursula, but the EU’s stance on Turkey hasn’t fundamentally changed. They still see Turkey as strategically important, especially in relation to Russia, but that only works if Turkey aligns with the west.
As long as Turkey keeps balancing between blocs, this kind of criticism is inevitable. Whether it seriously affects candidate status is another question, but it definitely doesn’t help.
SnooGadgets4411@reddit
This is a chicken or egg question. Turkey doesn't have another choice. There's zero belief that we can ever be a part of the EU. But still, grouping a NATO country together with China and Russia is completely wrong.

She’s basically saying, “Let’s just do whatever the US says,” so there’s nothing surprising about that. She’s right btw. Yes, EU can’t really do anything without the US. What surprises me is her mentioning Turkiye, because we’re also a US satellite.
a-3ter@reddit
Do people still think Turkey has a chance of entering the EU? It would have the biggest population and voting power, that will never be allowed. It would be political suicide for any politician in Europe

Only Montenegro should be admitted into EU.
The rest of Balkan and Ukraine and Moldova are not ready. Montenegro is unofficial part of eurozone and it's a small land so without veto rights it will cost no one.
Other countries like Serbia, N.Macedonia or Turkiye and Bosnia will be trojanic horses.
Ujemegaz@reddit
Being part of EU unofficially is not a good thing, because EU would experience a slight spike in infliation. Probably insignificant, but still...
Strange_Status_7690@reddit
Albania might join after Montenegro but Balkan countries are not suitable neither desirable for EU so it's a never finishing proces.
Ujemegaz@reddit
I think they would take us once Rama retires. He is too corrupt. I doubt EU would risk it by having such exponents, no matter how small our country is.
Strange_Status_7690@reddit
wasn't he speeding up the proces? the thing is to finish negotiations as always another bad politician can get to the throne anyway
Ujemegaz@reddit
The idea is to set up a guarding mechanism. We have been doing so for the past decade, and ambassadors watch over it, but politicians are still very corrupt.

Visible-Star-6079@reddit

Strange_Status_7690@reddit
Montenegro is finishing negotiations soon and as a small touristic friendly and euro payment system will not harm the EU like for example if you admit Serbia, Bosnia or Turkey.
Wrong-Title549@reddit
This is ridiculous. Labeling one of the most corrupt countries in the Balkans as an “eu candidate” is crazy. do your research. If they join, as a ex yugo country, they would end up being the closest to Serbia in almost every way.
Kooky_Resource6348@reddit
This is exactly how the rest of Europe reacted to recruiting (then) extremely poor and corrupted countries like Romania, Bulgaria, Cyprus and Greece’s admission is one of the most controversial.
Did these countries do bad to the EU? No. What makes you think all of these countries are “better” and “deserve” to be in the EU while the others would be a detriment to the EU (which doesn’t make sense because to join the EU they would have to make EU alignments)

We have to get Von der Leyen out of there, antagonising Turkiye and grouping them up with China and Russia is insane, and so far and away unreasonable, let alone impractical, that it has to have come from the same place recent Israeli posturing against Turkiye came from. Shameful and tiring.
