UPRT at 500 meters AGL

I found this on Instagram (apparently in Russia) a pilot made an UPRT around 500 meters AGL, what you guys think about this ?
Especially considering there was another passenger in the back
tailwheel307@reddit
That’s not training. That’s putting uneducated and uninformed passengers at risk for a ridiculous stunt.
Mole-NLD@reddit
I have my aerobatics rating (SEP) and can confidently say: this “pilot” is an idiot.
MacAttack0711@reddit
Just curious, since you said "SEP" I assume you're from EASA-land. Would you mind telling me a bit about this rating and what you were required to do for it? Here in the US aerobatics are a matter of proper equipment and training, but there's no rating or even endorsement from the FAA for it. Some organizations do offer formation endorsements of their own, but those are more for mutual agreement and insurance purposes.
Mole-NLD@reddit
Yep easa here. (Netherlands)
You need a minimum of 40hrs PIC before starting, the course is a minimum of 5,5hrs flying of which 30mins solo and additionally 7hrs of theory, going over aerodynamics, the ‘tech and airframe’ (things like: engines don’t always like to be run inverted and wings don’t like extreme changes in direction of force) emergency procedures, safe altitudes to train at, etc.
For the solo I made my own sequence with aresti symbols and performed it, first with instructor then solo.
Carlito_2112@reddit
I do not have my aerobatics rating. I also do not have a pilot license at all. However, I can confidently say that this was idiotic.

I don't have a plane or a pilot's license or anything. But I've done a barrel roll in Star Fox. Same thing. Not like it's very hard.
OldKinkyDrew@reddit
I don’t have an aerobatics rating, I couldn’t scrape together the money for a pilots license, and I was denied a fishing license due to a misunderstanding with the local fish monger over “catch and release” and even I know this video depicts utter stupidity and probably an FAA violation.
swaggler@reddit
I also have an aerobatics rating, in Australia, though we call it an aerobatics endorsement. What is SEP?
Mole-NLD@reddit
Single Engine Piston
swaggler@reddit
Ah thanks, we call it SEA 🤷
CryptographerHuge682@reddit
What does SEP means ?
Mole-NLD@reddit
Single Engine Piston.
(So no multi engine, turboprops. Just planes with a singular piston engine (as in one engine, obviously multiple pistons)
beastpilot@reddit
Interesting, I had no idea other countries had aerobatics ratings. There isn't one in the USA.
org000h@reddit
AU / NZ call them "flight activity endorsements" - spinning and aerobatics are seperate, but you need spin before aero. Then there are low level aerobatic endorsements etc.
Mole-NLD@reddit
No I know US doesn’t have one.
EATA does though. And honestly, I don’t think that’s a bad thing. It’s not bureaucratic, purely practical training (and i mean that in the sense of “useful”, obviously theory is heavily involved too) and an exam. I mostly did it to learn capabilities, just like a (anti)slip-course in a car or an advanced rider course on a motorbike. I found a great deal of enjoyment from it too though! Would highly recommend it to any pilot that can to do so. It’ll make you a safer day to day pilot having those skill in your bag of tricks if SHTF
beastpilot@reddit
The irony from your other comment is that the USA doesn't require aerobatic training to do aerobatics, but if you do them with a passenger, you must have a chute, no matter your level of experience. But for Europe, you need training, but no regulation requires a chute ever (and you're proud of never wearing one).
(I've done aerobatic training with a chute in the USA, and agree it's great to add to your pilot skills)
UniqueIndividual3579@reddit
When I did aerobatics I had a chute and an ejection seat.
jxmac@reddit
What were you flying aerobatics in? The citabria I did aerobatics in was equipped for neither hahahhaa
Mole-NLD@reddit
I've never flown with chute, (I know some who do, but only in pitts) Ejection seats are for tax paid planes, I amn't allowed to fly those.
beastpilot@reddit
How did you learn to do aerobatics without a chute? No chute needed in the USA if only one person onboard, but needed if 2 are.
Mole-NLD@reddit
Europe.
UniqueIndividual3579@reddit
Nope, put it back on the peg after the flight. The AF was very happy about that. In ROTC we had a chance to go to jump school. I wanted to, but was told no. I had a pilot slot and if I broke a leg I would lose it.
AggravatingCounter91@reddit
I don't have any kind've aerobatic rating and I can confidently say this pilot is doing some cool moves B)
Skilldibop@reddit
That's not even a stunt. Stunts are planned, practiced and carefully assessed for safety and conducted using equipment set up for it. This didn't look like it was any of those. I don't know of any 4 seater single engine aircraft that's built for aerobatics...

SilentWatcher83228@reddit

Shoddy_Act7059@reddit
That's not the accident I was alluding to; this was Flight 593, and the crash I was thinking of was Flight 821. But, yeah, Flight 593 might actually be, IMO, the most tragic and stupidest air disaster of all time.
Wyciorek@reddit
Aeroflot is the only airline to have a separate wikipedia page for every decade worth of their crashes, so it might be hard to figure out which “aeroflot crash” it could be - there are so many to pick from.
DaSilence@reddit
According to the Aircraft Crashes Record Office, as of February 2016 a total of 8,231 passengers had been killed in crashes involving Aeroflot aircraft, over 4.5 times more than any other airline.
From 1946 to 1989, the carrier was involved in 721 incidents.
jaierauj@reddit
It's my favorite fun fact about the airline lol
TheMachman@reddit
I feel like Aeroflot 6502 could be a contender for the throne. Crashing because the captain made a bet he could land with the window blinds down, and lost, has to be up there.
Shoddy_Act7059@reddit
Huh, this is the first time I'm hearing about this one.
Okay, then. Aeroflot 593, you've officially been dethroned (but don't think that doesn't make you any less stupid!).

vortex_ring_state@reddit

Radiokaikan@reddit
Agree. There was a tragic accident at a gliderport I used to fly where an idiot had a guest with no experience flying with him and tried to perform an unnecessary high-speed low-altitude skid approach using the ground effect along a river that was adjacent to the landing strip to “spice thing up” and crushed into the water. The worst part was that pilot knew how to release the harness but the passenger didn’t (or couldn’t). You don’t have to impress anyone. Flying alone is impressive enough…
Maruan-007@reddit (OP)
Totally true, pilot should do those stupid things at least alone and not with passengers just to show off…
dpetngl@reddit

DrChaos77382@reddit

Pndapetzim@reddit
As everyone else says: doing this with passengers is insane.
I'm also thinking about stress this puts on the airframe and the fact he's clearly done this before.
If anything goes wrong there's almost no margin for error.
Gorgeous view though.
AtmosphereMiddle1682@reddit
He's still in the green arc, and he's not fully deflecting any control surfaces because he is cognizant that he's likely exceeding the maneuvering speed of the plane. There's no stress on the plane. This pilot's issue isn't a lack of skill, but rather a lack of wisdom.
phaederus@reddit
I mean, based on how well the attitude indicator is working, who knows if the IAS is correct..
LawManActual@reddit
What instrument are you looking at? It’s certainly not the airspeed indicator. He maybe just barely crossed into the yellow arc.
I can assume you’re looking at the GPS in terrain awareness mode, and he’s in a valley, so yeah that’s red. But that’s not what they were talking about.

Upset Prevention Recovery Training. It’s a bunch of scenarios that cause upset (i.e. stall). Although I thought it’s mostly a term in the training industry since I work at a sim manufacturer and we implement UPRTs. Didn’t know it extended to real world scenarios too

CowboyLaw@reddit
I have no reason to disagree, but this is one of those maneuvers where telling someone isn't good preparation unless they've been through the maneuver several times themselves. And, if they have been through the maneuver, I think it's a lot less likely they'd scream like the devil was chasing their daughter. So my assumption (and it's nothing more than that) is that right-seat was NOT prepared for what was about to happen. Hell, when I turned the volume on for the video, I wasn't prepared for what was about to happen.

whyyounogood@reddit
It's manually caged with that knob, locked in position, to prevent possible damage to the gyro bouncing while he spins. You can see the red tag showing it's inop.
sirholymafia@reddit
Ahh, thanks!
winterfresh0@reddit
So, for things like historical fighter planes that might need to have gyroscope readings while doing maneuvers, did they use a different design/technology, or was it just built tougher to handle the stresses?
8636396@reddit
Totally possible those ones had a locking mechanism as well
winterfresh0@reddit
Yeah, but they would need the horizon measurement during maneuvers the most, I assumed they had ones that worked during maneuvers.
Neither-Way-4889@reddit
You don't really need an artificial horizon for maneuvering because those maneuvers are done using visual references. Modern AHRS are all solid state and don't need to be caged like gyros do, but you're still looking outside when doing aerobatic maneuvers.
Gyro instruments are primarily used for reference in IMC or low visibility situations, not so much for basic attitude flying or visual maneuvering.

swaggler@reddit
Skidding turn stall.
RBeck@reddit
That slow and in that right of turn the inside wing can stall first because air is moving slower over it.
Pndapetzim@reddit
He basically stalled in a banking turn to near zero airspeed, no forward airflow over the wings so the plane pitches down. Usually in a stall you'd be facing forward, so as you fall there's airflow over the wings and you get lift again - in this case he came down sideways, so the airflow running length-wise. He'd already killed all forward speed, so he just... fell.

One of my favorite things we used to do, when I was a Chinook crew chef, was Unusual Attitudes.
We would fly over the ocean, to vacant airspace, and one pilot would place an IFR hood on his helmet, blocking his view outside the aircraft.
The other pilot would place the aircraft in an unusual attitude; for example, flying in reverse, 40 knots, while descending at 1,000 feet per minute, with the aircraft out of trim.
Then, he would tell the other pilot, “You have the controls.”
It would then be the other pilot’s objective to regain control of the aircraft, using only the gauges, without looking outside the aircraft.
You’d be amazed how many pilots cannot accomplish this. I have seen pilots almost barrel roll the aircraft, attempting to regain control.
Too much fun!

Ok I’ll say it. That was pretty sick.
OHkaptinMYkerpit@reddit
I work for a company that does UPRT and that is not it. We don’t perform upsets below 3,000 AGL, anything low level we do in the sim or VR.
No-Brilliant9659@reddit
UPRT is a training program. This is a stall/spin that is recovered in the incipient spin phase. They could have recovered much higher but flew it to the deck for dramatic effect.
Dumb
mjdau@reddit
Thanks for telling us three times, we needed that.
No-Brilliant9659@reddit
Bad connection resulted in it posting 3 times lol oops. The crowd hates signal disturbance!

CharAznableLoNZ@reddit
Several of the dangerous mindsets in practice here.
DanSlade1@reddit
Okay now just imagine if she panicked and decided to yank back on the control stick like they do in movies and caused an accelerated stall, followed by a real spin at 100 feet
Molecular_Pudding@reddit
"There are old pilots and bold pilots, but no old, bold pilots." I hope he won't carry any passengers when he crashes.
CatDaddyTom@reddit
A bit low for a spin, even just a partial one. Then diving toward the river? Dumb. Stupid to do things like that with a passenger too.
Ok-Quit3011@reddit
A good pilot would never pull a stall at that altitude. He's at minimums. You should be at least 2,500+ feet agl...
HamasDaddyOnFire@reddit
WTF is the retard in the left seat doing...!?
Typical-Cap-3758@reddit
Stop using your phone for 5 seconds jeez
Manginaz@reddit
Russian pilot means there is a 100% chance he was drunk.
Flame_Flame@reddit
At the beginning of the video passenger on the right seat screams «No, I don't want [us] to fall». So the pilot warned them, heard them disagree and still did it.
Fright-Instructor@reddit
The reason why the FAA makes check-rides stricter 🤦🏻♂️
GroundedGerbil@reddit
Russian? That checks.
Neither-Way-4889@reddit
This is not "UPRT", this is a pilot demonstrating a spin at too low of an altitude. UPRT is TRAINING, this was just a reckless idiot showing off.
LaMortParLeSnuSnu@reddit
Wtf. Show off hobby pilots are a cancer.
Hallow_Chef@reddit
This gem is $387,000. Dibs for the tower room!
Includes a second house that could be in-law suite or separate guest accommodations [https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/201-E-Franklin-St-Delphi-IN-46923/85131066_zpid/]
Peacewind152@reddit
Fuck! Why? This person shouldn't have a pilot license. Full stop.
Disastrous-Run-3963@reddit
As crazy as this is, it's still impressive and takes skill.

I can almost hear "I’m Hoover, and welcome to your pilot debrief"…
thinkmoreharder@reddit
Why isn’t the attitude indicator moving as he (supposedly) points the nose up, down, turns and inverts? Probably not a real video.
xChoke1x@reddit
What the fuck?!
jared_number_two@reddit
Great way to spend the rest of your day cleaning vomit out of your plane.
Greenxgrotto@reddit
I have been in a plane when the pilot did this, as he was training and had to perfect the maneuver for his test. He told me before we went up, and asked if I wanted to. I did. It scared the shit out of me.
Conscious_Cicada9597@reddit
In America, that pilot loses his license permanently.
this_guy_aves@reddit
SIR?
i__Sisyphus@reddit
This pilot definitely has some benign brain cells
IM_REFUELING@reddit
Hey you can do anything once, as they say
m1mike@reddit
The nicest thing I can say about this is that he causes higher insurance premiums.
healeyd@reddit
No control over where his nose is headed… Awful.
digwhoami@reddit
Doesn't sound like russian to me.
LuuDinhUSA@reddit
Yeah so, I would not have posted this lol
Maruan-007@reddit (OP)
Why
DividerOfBums@reddit
He thinks it’s you
LuuDinhUSA@reddit
I know its not OP u/Maruan-007 , I am referring to the Actual OP the video creator. Someone had to post this and think, how cool is this extremely dangerous thing. That person should have kept it to themselves. At least here in the US, that's evidence.
Tryptamine91@reddit
I don’t think it was any of the crew that posted this.
LuuDinhUSA@reddit
I agree, but I would guess that the passenger who did, knew the pylote. I would hope you wouldn't want to jam your buddy up
Tryptamine91@reddit
True. I assumed this was some commercial tour or something.
LuuDinhUSA@reddit
Now that would be wild.
MonsteraBigTits@reddit
people like you: the most annoying redditors alive

fist of all, ya mom
second, I am referring to the actual person that filmed this, no OP

Gross
Mad_kat4@reddit
So he's not an old, bold pilot then.
airfryerfuntime@reddit
Yeah, I bet that made for a good tik tok.
EternalPatriotcr73@reddit
It’s truly irresponsible. I had an examiner who was a retired SAC Major and he told me, “There are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are no old, bold pilots”.
whubbard@reddit
Bob Hoover was a rare one!
SovereignWreckage@reddit
In Soviet Russia, plane spins you.
ToriGrrl80@reddit
Shitty pilot
loose_noodle@reddit
I can't think of a more reckless and stupid thing to do.
CactusPete@reddit
how about the same thing . . . blindfolded
shrunkenhead041@reddit
Wondering if those phones are waterproof enough that the video will still be recoverable after they retrieve the plane from the bottom of the river.
cptalpdeniz@reddit
Why do you say UPRT when its clearly not training?
doomiestdoomeddoomer@reddit
That looks like fun
Acheronian_Rose@reddit
This guy is going to get a bunch of people killed. What a dumbass
AndOnTheDrums@reddit
Seems wildly unsafe and unnecessary.

wxmanXCI@reddit
Russians really don't values their lives.
yoko_OH_NO@reddit
Wow this is the first aviation video I've seen that really demonstrates how easy it is to get disoriented in a plane. That's crazy
yeahgoestheusername@reddit
There are bold pilots and there are old pilots.
-burnr-@reddit
Intentional spins at 1500' to impress your girlfriend is definatley a choice.

nsysuchris@reddit
I like to show such video to my students to remind them that the sky is also shared by people like this.

The pilot's brain :
- Notices the lady's wearing revealing clothes
- Assumes she's must be an impressionable slut
- Assumes he's got a chance to get into her pants
- Assumes he's got enough altitude to perform a UPRT
- Assumes it's manly not to warn the passenger about the manoeuver
