Best authentic food in DFW (from people who actually grew up with it)
Posted by theLastDanc3@reddit | Dallas | View on Reddit | 250 comments
Trying to find some authentic food spots in DFW and would love to hear it directly from people who grew up eating that cuisine.
If you’re from another country (or your family is), what restaurant around DFW gets it right? Not just “good,” but the kind where you’re like “yeah… this tastes like home.”
Would love recommendations across everything — Indian, Mexican, Vietnamese, Ethiopian, Middle Eastern, etc.
Bonus points if there’s a specific dish I should order.
Appreciate any recs
caffpanda@reddit
For Japanese, Mr. Max.
Fraz0R_Raz0R@reddit
Every time we have a prof from Japan visit us for a symposium they are really impressed by sushi sake in Richardson and proceed to drink a bajillion sakes before leaving town.
caffpanda@reddit
Sushi Sake is definitely great and been around for ages.
Diabetesh@reddit
Ever had sushi robata in addison? I don't go there much, but i feel like they are pretty legit when it comes to the yakitori, sushi, and other grilled/fried dishes.
I am not counting the entrees, just the alle carte type items.
omgfloofy@reddit
Sushi Robata is my favorite Japanese spot in Dallas. They're spectacular. I miss some of the things they've removed from the menu when they pared it down (I miss the renkon hasami age they used to have), but they're still amazing.
Koennraad@reddit
I used to frequent this place with my group of friends in the mid 2000s. We were gutted when the owner passed and they shut down. My wife and I have been back since they re-opened, and it's not quite the same as it was back then, but still delicious.
NintendogsWithGuns@reddit
They’re inconsistent. Sometimes it’s on par with the best Izakaya food I’ve had in Japan, other times it’s tiny servings of half-assed food. If your table is primarily Asian, you’ll get better results.
HD335@reddit
Mr Max is massively overrated imo. We’ve been there multiple times and never felt it was close enough to even Izakaya spots we’ve had in other cities let alone Japan. The ambience is nice at their original location, that’s about it.
NintendogsWithGuns@reddit
Disagree. When it hits, it hits. Their own problems are consistency and the fact that the cooks only give their full effort when actual Japanese people are ordering. This is common, given that I’ve managed Japanese owned restaurants before and have seen the behavior first hand.
I’ve had Izakaya all over Japan, but also New York, Seattle, Austin, etc. I haven’t had a better one that Mr Max in the United States just yet, but I’m still looking.
competitor6969@reddit
Wrong Mr., mister. Mr. Sushi is the best Japanese spot in the metroplex. Still run by Akira-san who founded it in the 1990s. And now his son taking the reins.
caffpanda@reddit
Mr. Max definitely isn't the best sushi in town, but there's far more to Japanese food than sushi.
TheBaconShortage@reddit
Second option would be Waya Izakaya in Lakewood. The owner is from Japan and frequently goes back and forth for new featured menu items or sakes/drinks.
RowdyRoy11@reddit
Russian Banya of Dallas up in Carrolton serves delicious authentic Russian food.
You can enjoy a spa day/evening relaxing in the saunas and have snacks or a full meal wearing your robe in the Tea Lounge or… Dine on the restaurant side called Volga. It’s a quirky little place with a fun, friendly atmosphere. Highly recommend.
batfacecatface@reddit
That is a cool place. Wish it weren’t so expensive.
RowdyRoy11@reddit
Have you been? As far as restaurants go, the food isn’t so expensive. Most menu items are under $20 and large portions of authentic, freshly made food. $5 - $7 for appetizers/snacks. Banya admission is high for one day, but $80 for the whole week is very reasonable if you go multiple times during that week.
And the spa treatment prices are significantly lower than other spas.
arabs_legend@reddit
Afrah in Richardson, is a really good Middle Eastern place.
For Dessert go to Bigdash, they have two locations.
Emotional_Distance48@reddit
Al Baghdady - Try anything but their shawarma is very popular.
Afrah Mediterranean - I like their hummus, yogurts, kebab plates, pita, etc. I usually get chicken.
Ramallah Bakery - Any of the pastries in the glass case they rotate, but try the za'atar). To the right on the back wall there is bread they have the best samoon baked fresh.
Shiraz Mediterranean - Get the ghormeh sabzi it's a type of stew that is usually listed under entrees or specials. I also love lamb shank, but the ghormeh sabzi is very authentic & delicious. Under appetizers the dolmeh & baba ganoush are great. Definitely get the Shirazi salad.
KnowledgeNo8067@reddit
apparently the restaurant has been renamed to salam grill while the bakery remains the same, the food portions have been reduced while the prices remained the same. haven’t checked it out post renaming
Scruberaser@reddit
Confirmed we love al baghdadi. I think they changed their name recently though!!! The bakery next to it is still called al baghdadi but they changed the name of the restaurant.
MagicWishMonkey@reddit
Are you from the middle east? What do you think about Ali Baba (it's near Afrah)?
EntropySimian@reddit
Not from there, but travel enough to know the difference.
If you stick to the falafel, the sauce from the saffron chicken (but not the chicken), the roasted cauliflower, baba ghanoush, hummus and the shawarma, then it's pretty good.
The pita is not great, and much of the rest of their buffet is either dry or bland.
The restaurant changed hands a few times and the prices and quality reflect this. The one draw for me is that the falafel is coated is sesame and has the right flavor/texture that I haven't found outside of Arabica (RIP best falafel, hummus and baba ghanoush - I don't vouch for anything else there).
Afrah is better, but I'd rank both in the "serviceable" category.
mineraloil@reddit
I tried Ramallah bakery last week and it was really good
XELA_38@reddit
LOVE AL BAGHDADY!!!!!

Soooo good! I'm hungry now thinking about it lol

My Vietnamese friend took me to Ngon a couple months ago and said it was the best vietnamese food he'd had since moving to DFW. I've been back since and haven't had a bad order.
Kuby's and Henks are top-tier german food. I got some Leberkase for my German grandmother-in-law when she visited and she said it was the best she's ever had.
Kirin Court is my favorite Dim Sum in Dallas.
hiimaninja@reddit
Ngon is great for it's target audience, but there's better Viet food here in dfw. Here's a list of places I think are better than ngon. Lmk if ya wanted dish recommendations
Bep nha LA me Pho bang Pho Pasteur Pho bac Pho Tay do Saigon block Com GA Houston (the name is a bit ironic since we're in Dallas but og location is Houston) Goc hue
SystemNo4724@reddit
Which place has top tier BBH???
pugm0m_w-o_pug@reddit

hiimaninja@reddit
Pho Tay do Goc hue Pho real Pho is for lovers
I think my fav spot for bbh is go hue
SystemNo4724@reddit
Gotta make that drive to garland soon then 🫡 thanks homie!! 🙏🏻
hiimaninja@reddit
Lmk if ya want an eating buddy when you go lol I'll show you some super secret special items for you to try
bigmad168@reddit
La Me is sooo good! Their bun cha Hanoi tasted just like I remembered from our time in Vietnam. My viet friend took us and we were the only white people in there which is usually a good sign. 😂
hiimaninja@reddit
You've gotta try their Viet flan! They're the absolute best Viet flan I've ever had from a store
Guson1@reddit
My wife is Vietnamese- this dude knows what he’s talking about.
hiimaninja@reddit
Probs helps that I'm Viet too lol
Guson1@reddit
With a rec list like that I assumed you probably were lol.
ango198@reddit
honestly as a vietnamese person Ngon is incredibly mid and catered to non viet people. I recommend Pho Ngon 999 in Grand Prairie and Arlington for bun bo hue, ba le for banh mi, PTT in Arlington for broken rice dishes. Honestly Garland and Arlington are basically the only spots for authentic vietnamese food
MughalPrince22@reddit
Ba le banh mis are goated
avebelle@reddit
Honestly dfws dim sum game is super weak considering how many Canto folks live there. Kirin is mediocre at best for such a large metropolitan area.
hayashikun@reddit
i trust the customer demographics for dim sum and your assessment of kirin is still generous. if it were still open, maxim would be an easy top pick ~ now it should be flower garden.
theHiddenTroll@reddit
I’m not Vietnamese but I thought Ngon was overrated compared to other Viet spots I’ve been to, I do need to give it another shot though.
OtaniOniji@reddit
Seconded. I must add that Ngon is an upper scale Vietnamese cuisine and the owner really devoted to keep the place at high standard without letting go of the authenticity, but it’s not the type of “taste like home” kinda place.
You would need to go to Garland for authentic moms and pops Viet places.
dirtt_dawg@reddit
I’m a fan of Bistro B, been going there my whole life and my family loves it. My cousin thinks the pho broth is watery but I swear almost no restaurant pho will satisfy a Vietnamese American who grew up eating their grandparents two day stock every Sunday
zex-258@reddit
Agreed. Ngon is delicious but I'd say it leans more towards Vietnamese fusion than authentic Vietnamese. It's not the hole in the wall authenticity if that's what you're looking for.
SystemNo4724@reddit
I've never been to Ngon but these were my exact thoughts while looking at their menu and Google page, I prefer hole in the wall places, they actually feel homey
Magnitude_Ten@reddit
Ngon is good, but over priced. Plus a longer wait time due to the location.
Skunk_Gunk@reddit
Ngon blew me away. I wish I lived closer to it
s_w_a_g_yy@reddit
Maharaja in Fort Worth for Indian food.
dajenkumgod@reddit
Hadramout Restaurant in irving is yemini and is the best place to eat in town rn I believe. Look at the simplicity and limited options of their menu, it is made fresh the right way. Same with Samad Cafe, very authentic Persian food near the airport in Dallas made by a family in an old automotive shop turned into a restaurant.
n8texas@reddit
If you want authentic Southern / Texan home cooked style, you can’t beat Celebration on Lovers Lane. Same location since 1971, some of the staff - from bus boys to waiters to managers - have been there almost that long.
peterfourthree@reddit
I am Taiwanese and here are my recs
Tao rice roll - one of the only places in DFW you can get a full offering of authentic Taiwanese breakfast. My parents were hyped when they found this spot and say it tastes the same as what they ate growing up in Taiwan.
First Emperor - owned by a Taiwanese family. The wife works the front and husband works the kitchen. That’s how it’s been for 2, almost 3 decades. My family has been going here since I was like 6 years old and the wife still remembers our modifications to each dish we like to order. Truly does not get more mom and pop than this. Make sure you call ahead and order the sesame cake since they are the only Chinese/Taiwanese restaurant in DFW that has it on the menu (it takes ~40 minutes to bake)
Taiwan Cafe is great. Not as good as it used to be in the 2010’s. Price to quality ratio has fallen, but it is still an easy, no frills spot. I take my non-Asian friends here since the cafeteria line, pick-three, style of service is conducive to the way Americans order and eat food (not family style).
Real Taiwanese Cuisine - this is my latest gem. Inside the food court at 99 ranch in Frisco. Dad works the front and wife works the kitchen. Prices are incredible for the portion sizes and it is all very authentic. The best fried pork cutlet w/ rice (classic Taiwanese lunch) you will find in DFW.
Taipei station is okay, wasn’t blown away but wasn’t let down either. I have not tried Lee’s Taiwanese comfort food but heard good things.
Yama Izakaya & Sushi - the owner is Taiwanese, but opened a Japanese restaurant to try and make more money. The front half of menu is sub par Japanese food, but the second half has bomb Taiwanese and Chinese dishes. Sleeper pick.

Jake’s, Bangkok inn, Bavarian grill
Competitive-Dog-1653@reddit
I like Mexican fonda style cooking - small, often family-run restaurants serving home-style, authentic cuisine. Recent fav - Ana’s Restaurant on maple, chilaquiles with eggs and carne were hearty and flavorful.

Taquero in Lowest Greenville area. Such good Mexican food.
lotsandlotstosay@reddit
If someone has an English/British place please share that too! Can’t find authentic anywhere.
Ornery_Bandicoot_679@reddit
Across the pond is a gluten free British style pub their onion rings are to die for
They are over in colleyville off cheeksparger
BloodyNora78@reddit
They only have a food truck now, but Fish and Fizz has the most authentic fish & chips.
What else are you looking for?
crooke86@reddit
Their frozen oven chips spoil it. When Proper Baking Co does their pop ups, that's the best fish and chips in the area.
BloodyNora78@reddit
I didn't know they did this. I'll be on the hunt for it now.
lotsandlotstosay@reddit
Know anywhere with a proper full English?
crooke86@reddit
Cannon's Corner is the closest. Proper bacon, sausage isn't perfect but it'll do. Black and white pudding.
Expert_Bedroom_544@reddit
Can’t vouch for it as I haven’t tried it but Jaquval in OC says they do full English breakfast and during the winter they do Sunday roasts.
Virtual_Structure520@reddit
Not OP but I'm interested in trying a full English breakfast especially the black pudding.
DistinctAd3865@reddit
I was sad when they closed down but didn’t know they have a food truck. Gonna have to hunt it down!!
Soonhun@reddit
Also super interested. My friend is British and always dismissive of British food. I was hoping to take him to a nice English or British restaurant to better appreciate it. Never had it myself, either, so excited to try.
lotsandlotstosay@reddit
Yeah my husband is English and he’s been disappointed by everywhere we’ve tried (not in TX). We haven’t found anywhere in Dallas to try though, so that’s why I’m looking for recs.
GoneAmok365247@reddit
Same here, husband wants a proper fish and chips! We’ve tried so many!! We’d both love a good fry-up!

Fish ‘n Fizz is going to be at Strangeways from 5-8 pm this Sunday, Four Bullets Brewery in Richardson on May 2nd from 4-8 pm and at the British and European Car Show at White Rock Lake on May 3rd from 10 am - 2 pm. Their fish and chips are so delicious.

A ton of authentic Chinese places up in Plano. My goto is always Chens. My wife absolutely loved it and she’s from China.
skarekroh@reddit
Also in Richardson in the “Little China” district (just east of 75, around Arapaho/Belt Line)
coffee-4lyfe@reddit
Jeng Chi is phenomenal.
sushiwife@reddit
Jeng Chi is good but it’s kind of white people’s idea of what authentic Chinese food is. Source: My husband is Chinese and that’s his take lol.
bikerdude214@reddit

mijo_sq@reddit
This is truth.
HD335@reddit

themopylae@reddit
Chens restaurant on Coit, the Hunan Bistro next to it as well is one she really likes. She also likes Sichuan Pepper house off of Wagner.

Sichuan Pepper House is tasty. I’d throw Chongquing house into the conversation as well as See You Again off Parker for some legit Chinese BBQ

Thanks for the recommendation. If you are looking for Korean food. My favorite Korean spot is Joy kitchen in Richardson.
themopylae@reddit
I’ll need to try that! I love Korean food, Maht Gaeks my favorite but I’ve never tried Joy, I’ll check it out!
YourFavoriteFlavor@reddit
Maht Gaek's quality has diminished substantially since Covid in my opinion. A new place in Carrollton Korea called The Jinkook has supplanted it as my favorite. The menus differ though. Joy Kitchen is a great little spot, too.
themopylae@reddit

Kuby’s Sausage House in Snyder Plaza!
habaneromargs@reddit
I would vote Noodle Wave for authentic Thai/Laos food. My old coworker is family to the owners and highly recommends it. The one in Richardson is the best, the Dallas one is tiny and more like pick-up. The Carrollton one is also good but menu is slightly different as she said that one is franchised/not directly owned by them.

DelishSmoothie@reddit
It isn't a "true spirit of Mexico" place. It's cheap and tasty and serves the Hispanic/Latino community it's smack dab in the middle of plenty faithfully. They even have people who are down on their luck trying to earn some cash by holding the door open and greeting people in. If yellow cheese is the line, you probably weren't going to like this place.

Caribbean Cuba off or Webb Chapel and Belt Line makes picadillo exactly like my Cuban grandmother used to make it.
Blanche_Deverheauxxx@reddit
Is there raisins in the picadillo? I've met a number of people who always claim things are authentic Cuban and I've always been disappointed outside of Miami.
redraider-102@reddit
You know what? I don’t think they do. That would be the one difference between theirs and my grandmother’s, then. I shouldn’t have said “exactly,” but it’s similar enough that it passes for the real thing. Now I’m really missing hers. I wish I had gotten her recipe, though I did get her arroz con leche recipe and make it often.
I’ve also noticed that many Cuban restaurants don’t even have picadillo on the menu. And practically none of them have boliche (Caribbean Cuba does not, BTW). I found one in Miami that does, but it was entirely different from what I’m used to.

Alright. Sichuanese Chinese food. My family comes down from many generations of Sichuanese Chinese food, and my mom still makes bomb sichuanese chinese food. This is what our family likes the most. You've got plenty of options here, up north though. The ones below the chefs are from Sichuan and trained in that style so you know it'll be authentic...
Chen's Restaurant - Plano
Sichuan Folk - Plano
Taste of Chengdu - Carrollton
Chongqing House - Plano (it shows temporarily closed right now, but that's because they're on vacation)
Alternatives - not as spicy in our option but still good if you don't want super spicy food. Still authentic for the most part
Royal Sichuan - Richardson
Sichuanese Cuisine - Plano
Elbandito78@reddit
Is this in order of preference? I love Royal Sichuan, but it's the only one I've been to on your list. First place I ever went and experienced that "mala" spicy.

TKS for Cantonese food. The owners/chefs are from HK the wife is a mainlander and doesn’t speak canto. Food is legit.

My grandparents were Canadian, and I was raised in Michigan: Maple Leaf Diner is the next best thing to being back home, including the absolute best Belgian waffles I've ever had outside of Toronto.
dizzlemydazzle@reddit
Del Campo Empanadas. It's Argentin style Empanadas and they also have choripans on Tuesdays. The family that own and run the shops are from Buenos Aires. They also sell some seriously good chimichurri sauce.
dizzlemydazzle@reddit
OP, do you have a general area that you're trying to stay within in DFW? Or are you willing to take a trek for some good food?

Dominican food... Doña Maria Dominican Cuisine in Irving.
Get the sancocho, shrimp or fried pork mofongo, rice and beans with stewed chicken. Tamarind juice. Slice of Dominican cake if available.

Bistro B - Vietnamese
SBR2TH@reddit
They have everything under the sun on their menu. Jack of all trades, master of none. The only thing worth getting is the cheap 2 for $1 egg roll deal where you can order a bunch for a good potluck dish.
When I’m in Garland, I usually go to Pho Bac or Pho Pastuer. Pho Tay Do for BBH. Or Quoc Bao for banh mi.
MephistoHamProducts@reddit
Pho An down the street from there has been my "go to" for years.
OtaniOniji@reddit
Yeah. No. Bistro B is Vietnamese’s version of Panda Express.
notadamnprincess@reddit
La Me just across the parking lot is legit, though.
SystemNo4724@reddit
They have a really good B2GO deal for their pho, and their portions are MASSIVE!
mustafakapasi69@reddit
careful w google maps reviews...they're manipulated:
"The top-rated Tex-Mex restaurant in Dallas, according to Google Maps, isn’t Mia’s. It isn’t Mariano’s, E Bar, or Las Palmas either. It’s a place called Rj Mexican Cuisine, and there’s a good chance you’ve never eaten there. As of April 13, Rj Mexican Cuisine carried a 4.8-star average across 11,252 Google Maps reviews, according to D Magazine. That’s more reviews than Mia’s, Mariano’s, E Bar, and Las Palmas combined, and a higher rating than any of them. For anyone who grew up eating queso at Mia’s on Lemmon or spending Friday nights at Mariano’s, that number stops you cold." (source: Preston Hollow local)
total mess lol
ashbjordan@reddit
Great point. I've learned if Asian places are below 3.5 starts they're excellent.
NoSheDidntSayThat@reddit
This is a great point and good example. I was not impressed by Rj Mexican -- ate there after going to the 6th floor museum and it was both super empty for its West End location and just completely average.
ashbjordan@reddit
Been to Guadalajara in Jalisco and had authentic Birria and Carne en su jugo. My family is from Acapulco so this cuisine I never knew about growing up. Not Quesobirria (yes they have it, but it's not the OG way to eat it and it's goat! Still amazing). At Maskaras Mexican Grill in Dallas.

Cooking Borscht Soups and Salads in Carrollton off of Josey and Frankford. Amazing Ukrainian borscht, they make it with brisket and it’s divine! They also have cabbage rolls and Napoleon cake. They make their own rye bread to go with the food.

Someone would have to verify the authentic part, but Selda (I go to the one off Beltline) is amazing and delicious Mediterranean (specifically Turkish) food. Their cigar borek (flaky pastry stuffed with melted feta), stuffed dates, and grilled haloumi cheese is all phenomenal.
mineraloil@reddit
BK khan and al markaz for Pakistani. BK is very good but a bit overpriced. Al markaz is more low key.
Yamandi for Yemeni food
Ayat is an award winning Palestinian restaurant that just opened in Richardson (from nyc)

I'd say the one on Virginia Parkway in McKinney. They have free mcnugget sauce available, you don't even have to ask. You just take which ones you want.

Not sure what authentic dallas food is. Get some street tacos or burritos from a taco truck or gas station taquria. Other than fair food, im not sure what can be defined as "authentic " dfw food.
No_Square_3913@reddit
They’re asking for food found in DFW from another country that is the most authentic to where it’s actually from. They’re not asking for authentic food from Dallas.
PomeloPepper@reddit
Taste of Poland is amazing for authentic Eastern European food. They also have a tiny grocery store attached.
Authentic Southern (US) American can be found at Mama's Daughters. Four locations, but I've linked to the one in Plano. Daily specials are meat and 3 veg for around $14.00.
Valerie_austin_1965@reddit
Austins bbq Addison is a really good mom and pop place

BK Khan BBQ or Al Mueed for authentic Pakistani Barbecue.

Not sure on the authenticity but Chasu Kitchen in Plano has become my new go to. They have the best hot and sour soup I've ever had and I really like their garlic butter fried wings. The entrees we order are also great but the soup and wings are my favorites.
