Why does Turkey have so many military bases?

Light0fDesire@reddit
It is the current map.
NevrijemeSamJa@reddit
Montenegro will never have any turkish military bases on it's soil.
This is just a wet-dream-fairytale map of turks living in west europe, paying 5k € to avoid military draft. :D
Light0fDesire@reddit
why you yapping so aggressively? i found this on web and thats it. i didn’t deploy that bases.
NevrijemeSamJa@reddit
Totally nothing aggressive to be found here. I'm just explaining how maps like this are getting created and by whom.
Light0fDesire@reddit
no, the source i got this is Greek, nothing about the Turks living in west europe. Source said EU should stop Turkish military expansion, and used this photo.
NevrijemeSamJa@reddit
Well, in that case provide us with the link where that map can be found and let us judge by ourself. :)

khmelnitsk@reddit
Actually it’s quite scary that second after US (which has bases in almost 50 countries) is turkey with just a few in the region and turkey is still in NATO too.
FinalLightNL@reddit
Why is it scary? We turks fight terrorism on behalf of the entire glove pretty much. We have led many NATO missions succesfully too. We pretty much protect europe 😅
khmelnitsk@reddit
No i mean US is dominating with a big margin.
FinalLightNL@reddit
True, they have done “some” good but mostly leave a massive mess. And someone like trump can be so dangerous for the entire world.
khmelnitsk@reddit
This is why it’s scary that turkey is second with just a few bases while first place has hundreds.
Professional-Tea-621@reddit
Turkey doesn't bomb civillians and locals don't fear Turkish soldiers. You cannot comapare Turkey with the others. This comparison is not fear u.s.a killed 170 children recently and nobody is even held responsible

There's a whole list of similar cases:

Barbak86@reddit
In Kosovo Turkey does have a military "base", because it is part of KFOR, the multinational troops that are basically in charge of security in Kosovo.
From this perspective, a lot of nations have "bases" in Kosovo, but only the US has a real base.
YesGameNolife@reddit
Yeah sure dude only US has a real base turkey is so weak its not a real base nooo .. lol I like how people cry every little thing about turkey and ita not "actually true" when things come to turkey. Funny tho you guys make us laugh thats something:)
Barbak86@reddit
Projecting much? It seems you are just talking without knowing what's going on and thinking I'm trying to argue with Turks. I'm just telling it how it is.
Google: "Sultan Murat kislari" and then google "Camp Bondsteel."

ahbirbilsen@reddit
Lol, this is a parking garage at best.
Barbak86@reddit
This old Factory seems to be the base. Look at the houses how big they are compared to the base... Then check the other picture of the US base and how big the houses look compared to it.
Barbak86@reddit
It's not marked in Google Maps, but it is on some geodata site of Kosovo
Barbak86@reddit
Barbak86@reddit
This is the backside. It has a side in the front too, but it's not that big. You can imagine how big it is by looking at the two roads that are crossing (up where the houses are and at the side of the base. It looks like it is an old Factory that has been repurposed.
There wasn't a better picture from air, and I'm too lazy to search it on Google maps.
The other nations operating in Kosovo have similar "bases". That's why I said, only the US has a military base for real.
DrinkInevitable3457@reddit
Is the Turkish base in Kosovo named after the Sultan Murat that died there or one of the other four?
Barbak86@reddit
Yeah I think so. It's somewhere around Prizeren (looks like an old Factory that was repurposed)

Odd-Future1037@reddit
Turkey has military bases in Albania, Kosovo and Bosnia? What for?
SalientSalmorejo@reddit
To encircle Greece and bring back the ottoman empire
CapitalNothing1696@reddit
No actual government official in Turkiye is trying to bring back the ottoman empire. That's literally an election slogan and nothing else.
chrstianelson@reddit
Which election was that a slogan for?
And you say "literally" so it must be true.
CapitalNothing1696@reddit
The cult of personality created by Erdogan and Erol Olcok(his former pr manager) was built upon the narrative that Ataturk destroyed the ottoman empire and erdogan will revive it and revive conservative policies as well. Mind you that i'm not saying sharia because the moment he became the mayor of Istanbul he quitted that kind of sharia speech. There is a portion of AKP voters who unironically believe that he will resurrect the Empire but not even the opposition thinks that way (im a member of one of the opposition parties)
The problem with Erdogan isn't ottomanism but political islamism, authoritarianism and Turkism-Islamism synthesis which was denied by Ataturk for a reason.
chrstianelson@reddit
The words you use are the only things that shape your message. So of course I pay attention to them.
And no, bringing the Ottoman Empire back has never been an election slogan. Yes, some of Erdogan's Islamist base want that, but it has never been uttered as an election slogan.
AKP's election slogans has always been a version of "we work, they talk", "if you want security and stability, only we can provide it" and in the early years "EU membership and democracy".
CapitalNothing1696@reddit
You have surface level knowledge of the country. The cult of personality for Erdogan was never a monolith and as I've said, at each step it changed according to need. "EU Membership" for example, isn't such a wanted promise for most people excluding the young population. "We work they talk" is a popular slogan yes, I think should've made it clear that I was referring to the thinking of his followers and ideas that resonate in them, I wasn't really talking about party slogans. Nobody goes around and screams "we work they talk" but you can always see some old father or mother saying "If I don't vote him, then who, the kemalists who want to destroy islam?"
chrstianelson@reddit
I have a feeling that you're in your early 20s and mostly keep track of Turkish political landscape by watching Sozcu and HalkTV as well as r/Turkey.

Martha_Fockers@reddit
In Albania they have rights to use it as they modernized the base for Albanian use and we have agreement if they keep it modernized upgraded etc they can use it
Basicly we get a free naval base upgraded etc in exchange they can dock here train etc
Damirirv@reddit
The base in Bosnia is just a turkish led EUFOR base, not a fully turkish owned one. As for why, mostly symbolic due to Turkeys' aid to us during the Yugoslav Wars and "historic ties" since we were the primary colony they treated somewhat decently for the vast amount of time.
TheCharalampos@reddit
Cause they are eternal rivals to us Greeks who are like super cool.

Steril-Agent@reddit
It's also tragicomic that it's a Greek who is questioning Turkey's military bases.
Real question: Why are you silent about the country arming the Aegean islands that should remain unarmed?"
or dedeağaç?
Savings_Dragonfly806@reddit
Maybe if your old ass dictator didn't constantly make claims that the Aegean islands close to the Turkish coast belong to Turkey or the fact that your air force and navy constantly break air and maritime boundaries
Steril-Agent@reddit
Could this be a consequence of Greece increasing its nautical miles as a result of its ultra-nationalist Megali Idea?
Or what was the reason for the Turkish massacres you perpetrated in Cyprus in the 1950s?
Or the Christmas massacre you've forgotten?
Far-Collection8595@reddit
If you're going that back to the past, you'll also encounter ottoman massacres to the greeks. It'd be better to focus on today about this subject.
Steril-Agent@reddit
Far-Collection8595@reddit
Ofc it is. And if it's not far enough for you, where will you draw the line?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massacre_of_Phocaea
Savings_Dragonfly806@reddit
The Megali Idea has to do with liberating Greeks from lands into one state. Though it eventually came to a stop in the 1920s.
So saying it as of the new age is a VERY far-fetched view.
And why can't Greece increase it's nautical miles? It has the right to do that under international law.
Steril-Agent@reddit
new age? The Greek Cypriot dream of Enosis is a continuation of the Megali Idea.
did you forget the Akritas plan? George Grivas?
"Forgetting what is useless is a gain" for you.

Significant_Judge008@reddit
What was it like to be there in Afghanistan?
Worried-Owl-9198@reddit
I thought I was being punished by God, but jokes aside, it was actually quite relaxed. We mostly spent time in the barracks; sometimes we would provide security at meetings or mediate between local warlords and the UN. The Afghans hated the Americans, so we handled the communication. Other than that, it was a truly terrible place where civilization genuinely hadn't reached. For instance, at something like a wedding, while there were plenty of empty chairs, the women would sit on the ground on rocks and such; she had no right to sit there. After returning to Turkey, I kissed the ground. I finally understood what it truly means to be a nation.

İ've read that they were being threatened by the taliban.

Turkey doesn't have a base in Azerbaijan. In fact no one has. The Constitution itself prohibits that.
Mf who made this map just took a joint observation center with Russian and Turkey which operated for a short 2 years after the war of 2020 and relabeled it as a "military base".

Syria - Iraq is personal security (againts Kurdish militas who tryinna create their own country . You can understand why Turkiye doesnt like that idea)
Libya presented as being againts Greece (for economic zone shit nd securing some oil / gas thingies)
Qatar is economical . We put there our troops (pretty few afaik) just to show off to secure money backing (they do be our sugar daddies nowadays)
Somalia is economical as well we put there our troops nd both equip nd train Somalian military . Recently we put some jets nd helis to back up their efforts againts insurgencies . We do that so we get to get %30 or so share from their economic zone
Afghanistan was with UN forces nd still staying there to strenghten ties with Afghans.
I m unsure about the Albania one but for Bosnia it was viq Nato forces afaik nd afterwards we placed a seperate base there? I sont quite remember ngl

It has the means to increase its presence in its near geography.
- Lots of failed states within its reach that welcomes foreign intervention.
- Large army.
- Somewhat large economy.
- Doesn't have the colonial baggage that most western countries have (in the Muslim geography at least).
- Political ambition to increase its leverage in the geopolitical stage (because it's highly affected by it and doesn't really require democratic process to take aciton)
- Has somewhat of a positive image in these countries that transfers into a soft power.
- Increasing military industry that benefits from military spending.
- Has somewhat of an autonomy from the Western block to move independently and without approval of the international community but still a part of it to not heavily sanctioned to oblivion (although it paid the price couple of times such as in Cyprus, Syria, etc. which somewhat contributed to develop its national military industry and kinda backfired)
- Has historical familiarity with most of the regions.
- Little to no public opposition to it. I could say it's one of the things even the people against the ruling government supports it and main opposition is criticized when they don't support the military operations outside the borders.
- Has an experienced army that fought against terrorism for long years.
- Doesn't really have natural resources so needs to put its large military to use to gain political and economic benefits in resource rich countries. And perhaps aiming to establish a neo-imperial security architecture in its region (similar to USA but in a smaller scale, where it provides protection to failed states and rich countries without functioning military to protect itself from inside and outside threats but gain political and economic benefits in return such as a cut from natural resource sales or direct investments)
- If it doesn't increase its presence, Russia, Israel, USA, Iran or other actors could increase their influence dangerously close to its borders (and perhaps even arm ethnic minorities to threat Turkey and use this as a political leverage, limiting its political autonomy as result)
- We need to remember the geopolitical factors that gave birth to its imperial legacy are still somewhat relevant today and perhaps will become even more so as world move from unipolarity to multipolarity.

It's a stretch. In Bosnia, Kosovo, Somalia, Afghanistan they are a part of international/peacekeeping forces (UN), like so many other countries. I don't know about Albania and what would they do there, but they indeed meddled in Syria, Iraq and Azerbaijan.
I just read about Albania, they helped rebuild that base, but it's an Albanian base, Turkey has the right to use it for exercises, it's not a Turkish base (like Ramstein or Bondsteel are American).
