The family that founded Alpina is BACK with a new super-coupé for | Autocar

For anyone wondering, the family that used to own Alpina sold it completely to BMW. BMW will now make them entirely as a spin off brand. The family has founded a new company

Hot take: there is no reason this car’s body should be made of carbon fiber. It’s not chasing lap times or providing you with the greatest track experience. It’s a comfortable, high-speed GT. They should have just used aluminum to keep costs down, because $450,000 is a ripoff for something like this.
ImpressionAgile9702@reddit
Aah. Half a mil for an m4?
Immediate_Bee_6472@reddit
Unpopular opinion car is ugly and overpriced
Imagine buying this over a turbo 911
gr8masturb8@reddit
the target audience can just buy both.
and if i had practically infinite money i'd get something unique too instead of a "just" a "normal" turbo 911.
Immediate_Bee_6472@reddit
No offense it’s nothing normal about a 911 turbo
It’s nothing they can do to a bmw m4 that can make it 450k ain’t no amount of luxury on that car to justify that cost
Tbh they coulda started with something closer to that point like a m8 coupe and maybe 300k wouldn’t sound so bad
I wish I had a company to make ugly expensive cars to take your money
gr8masturb8@reddit
they're not normal to us mortals.
but anyone with 400k to spend on a toy isn't normal either, and for them there's nothing exciting about a turbo 911 that (in their view) any ol' schmuck can get.
rockinadios@reddit
Lol you could buy almost two GT3's for the price of that thing.
Twiggyhiggle@reddit
lol a $450,000 M4. You are in Bentley Continental and Rolls Royce Spectre territory with that much.
kjubus@reddit
There is A LOT of people that have SHITLOAD of money... And a rare car like this is worth more to them then a "plebean" bentley.
Agent_Kozak@reddit (OP)
I believe it is called an "appreciating asset"
schultzM@reddit
It ain’t / these coach-build cars that keep a lot of the previous cars struggle to keep the MSRP. You know the owners spec them up pretty high above MSRP every time
rosinall@reddit
Those are always the most appreciating by FAR
schultzM@reddit
Only if they have a radical body and relatively low build count. Think Alfa disco volante or the other builds off the 8c chassis
a_berdeen@reddit
This car will not appreciate lmfao.
inaccurateTempedesc@reddit
If it's cool, sure. But this just feels like a lore accurate BeamNG mod.
thisisjustascreename@reddit
I've never been very excited by Alpina's products either, but these people clearly aren't idiots, they talk to their customers and know what they're looking for. For whatever reasons.
OgdenDermstead@reddit
I think you are right on the mark with this. From what I have gathered, Alpina (the old one, not the upcoming BMW trim level) had a lot of dedicated customers and particularly in Europe. They catered to that niche and those customers very well, and the customers seemed very happy to spend a lot of money with Alpina.
I would imagine the bulk of those customers will move with the original company to Bovensiepen and the new company will understand very well what the customers want.
Capri280@reddit
For the most part, the best selling Alpinas were 3ers and 5ers (in both petrol and diesel). Even a dolled up Alpina B7 is hardly comparable budgetwise to this rebodied 4er with a stratospheric pricetag. Alpina may have made a few wild builds once upon a time, but 21st century Alpinas are somewhat massaged bimmers with better interiors.
OgdenDermstead@reddit
I mean I would argue that the person who’s willing to pay 30-35% (if you compare new prices across the last ~10yrs) for what you described as that “massage” on the equivalent BMW is pretty dedicated to the brand?
AcanthaceaeNo948@reddit
I mean BMW made a million dollar M4
noahbrooksofficial@reddit
But for 450k, at least you have an M4 that isn’t butt ugly!
iSlacker@reddit
Can do that for under $10k with an ADRO kit.
theb3arjevv@reddit
If done correctly, it's not outside the realm of sanity. Those two are also just modified Audis and BMWs, at their core.
This is just way too similar to its original model. And it also looks a little like an Accord.
FourEyesAndThighs@reddit
Alpina has never modified an Audi, moron.
theb3arjevv@reddit
Do you know how to read? I may have been incorrect in other ways, but nowhere did I even imply that Alpine modifies Audis. Come on man.
strongmanass@reddit
This is comically inaccurate. The Conti GT shares a platform only with the Panamera and the Spectre is on RR-exclusive architecture.
SomeJayForToday@reddit
The Spectre is in no way a 'modified BMW'. The 'Architecture of Luxury' platform platform its built on is only used for RR cars. The Ghost used to share the 7-series platform IIRC but it hasn't since 2020.
rosinall@reddit
Why is it missing the front grille?
Doip@reddit
It looks like a VUHL
thefanciestcat@reddit
Beautiful, but 4X the price of the donor car is stupid even if you have the money IMO.
FatMonkeyMilk@reddit
From the thumbnail I thought it was a Citroen and now I see that it costs 450k and has a fake diffuser styled rear bumper..............
Brno_Mrmi@reddit
Gotta admit it looks PRECIOUS. But that price, damn.
AcanthaceaeNo948@reddit
It’s less than half the price than the Batmobile BMW made a few years ago…
jk-jk@reddit
Am I crazy or is this not even based on the current M4? Looking at the side profiles for this car and the F82 M4 the window sill is exactly the same. When you compare to a G84 M4 you see that it doesn't have the little bit that kicks up slightly before meeting the C pillar. But also maybe this is actually based on the G84 M4 convertible, when you look at the roof for this new car it looks almost like a hardtop for a soft top converting.
costafilh0@reddit
WOW.
I wish I was this rich to be able to afford being this stupid.
Wsswaas@reddit
If you were, wouldn't you pay a lot for uniquness? a botique and niche car that you will be the only one who drives it in your city?
q-_-pq-_-p@reddit
Touché, Mr. Bovensiepen
Agent_Kozak@reddit (OP)
This made me lol
PEEWUN@reddit
Shame about the price. That's exactly how the 4 should've looked, save for the lack of kidneys.
Fiveby21@reddit
Can we not post fluff articles about cars that only billionaires could afford?
ALaLaLa98@reddit
That is an awful name.
Competitive_Earth473@reddit
Wow the blue is so gorgeous. I like what they did here
Seeker80@reddit
The Zagato bodywork is great, but this should've been a much lower price. At the M4's size, it's targeting some larger and nicer GTs while costing more.
They could've used an 8-series as a base and done a little better, but the price would still need to be lower. It'd also seem a bit more exclusive with a V8.
theb3arjevv@reddit
That looks how the M4 would have looked without the forced BMW styling elements. It's an attractive enough car but doesn't look special enough for even half that price tag.
3nl@reddit
It looks like the M4 and Mustang had a baby
theb3arjevv@reddit
The Accord is definitely at the orgy, along with a Charger and some Hyundais.
This family is into some freaky stuff I guess
NarcoticCow@reddit
lol actually reminds me of the fugly 2019 Camaro facelift
Dachshand@reddit
It’s pretty but even 200K would be a lot for that.
JGRACEFAN95@reddit
Cool! It’s a coach built m4 which I think is pretty cool. I get it’s not to everyone’s taste but something like this is a lot more special than a standard production car.
V8-Turbo-Hybrid@reddit
That looks Audi for me…
derritterauskanada@reddit
Wonder why they sold Alpina to BMW to only try to recreate a new company?
EloeOmoe@reddit
Seems to work out well for them if they sell to BMW and then are contracted to relaunch the brand.
NanderK@reddit
Money.
Keep doing the same, but now with a few hundred million dollars in the account.
EloeOmoe@reddit
Most vanilla Zagato ever.
TheGhostofJoeGibbs@reddit
Only exciting if they can make it a plug in hybrid. Love to cruise the city center Euroculture in my 4800 pound performance coupe, all while saving the planet.
Dnlx5@reddit
Every 2 door sports coup looks like a mustang to me these days...
I think its a tribute to how well the mustang was penned. But these design houses need to do better to stay unique. The base form of the mustang, the M4, and this are especially close.
sioux612@reddit
Not sure if they chose the BMW platform with the most potential, or simply the worst
I just know that when I drove all M Models, the M4 was the single one that I had no interest in driving again. The M2 does everything the M4 does, but better and in a smaller package
Cygnus94@reddit
It's £332k for a modified M4.
