The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics was a revolutionary concept car unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. Designed as a 2+2-seater, it was the direct precursor to the production BMW i8

Powered by a high-performance plug-in hybrid system combining a 1.5-liter, three-cylinder turbodiesel engine with two electric motors.
Total system output of 356 horsepower and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque, enabling 0–100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration in 4.8 seconds.
Electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph).
It consumed just 3.76 liters per 100 km (approx. 75 mpg imp) with CO2 emissions of 99 g/km.
Capable of driving up to 50 km (31 miles) on pure electric power alone.
Achieved an exceptionally low drag coefficient of 0.22, utilizing "air curtain" technology and specialized 21-inch wheels with blade profiles to reduce turbulence.
Built using a mix of aluminum and carbon fiber to keep the weight at approximately 1,395 kg.
A design philosophy where surfaces overlapped to create a visual sense of lightness and transparency, notably in the glass doors and roof.
Large doors that opened upwards, providing access to both front and rear seats.
The system derived from aerospace technology to convert heat from the exhaust into electricity to power the onboard network.
The concept's striking futuristic look and high-tech features were so well-received that BMW moved it into series production as the BMW i8, which debuted in 2013 and remained largely faithful to the original "Vision" design.

Back when BMW was designing truly beautiful and timeless cars.

The i8 seems like a car for people who need attention more than they need transportation
rafamacamp@reddit
I want an I8 because it's cool AF and Im Happy when I see it. Don't fucking care about getting attention from other people. You comment sounds like what non car people say about any sports car.
fauxregard@reddit
Yeah, it's just a cool car. I don't think it shouts "I need attention", especially compared to some other cars.

Drop an insult and the rightful owner will be along soon to pick it up

I mean he’s not wrong dude, you really don’t have an argument lol
Gramerdim@reddit
I'm with you on that, the i8 looks cool bar the 3 cyl (look at the gemera, they fitted a v8 in it).
I hate people like u/SubtractOneMore and his comment about cook cars and attention. sometimes it's just about fulfilling your dreams and having pleasure from owning what you like albeit the i8 does walk a very thin gray line between the two

I liked the looks of the i8 when it came out. I wish they would have made an M version with a straight six that went as fast as it looked.

I was lucky enough to see this one at the Melbourne motor show

When BMW created these concepts, I was convinced they'd never put anything remotely similar into production. The i8 and the i3 proved me wrong in spectacular fashion.
The only disappointment was that BMW never gave the cars what they needed to succeed, and didn't believe in the vision enough to keep going. So sad that they've abandoned that direction to focus on anonymous-looking bars of soap.

Interestingly, they were planning on making a blander car as an "i5" but killed it before launch. https://www.drive.com.au/news/bmw-i5-patent-renderings-point-to-new-electric-family-car/
MRDR1NL@reddit
That would have been so popular, and set them om a better course then they are now styling wise

Would it have differed from their existing PHEV lineup? In 2017 they introduce the 530e with over 20 miles of range. Unless the raised floor means it would be a full BEV, but I imagine the price would be quite high, considering how Tesla had to price the Model S. So maybe they decided it wasn't worth pursuing an electric sedan at that time because of the costs and demand.
Feuerdrachen@reddit
Interesting how they cancelled the SUV and instead produced the sporty i8 and the compact i3.
Most car brands would have probably done the opposite.
Iliyan61@reddit
honestly the I3 seems to have fairly well (at least in the UK) considering how weird it was and how electric vehicle uptake was so slow for so long.
i’ve seen them a lot as fleetish vehicles
Whisky_and_razors@reddit
Just drove past an i8 tonight. Absolute filth. Like a knife on wheels.

That’s not a car, that’s a sculpture.

I always thought this concept was incredibly cool, and I got to see this in person at the BMW Museum in February. It was cool seeing it up close because you could tell how hand-made it is—a lot of small details that look painted or individually molded. They had it in a window beneath the Neue Klasse sedan concept.

the "vision" number plate sort of reads "(vi)slow"
LMGTP_GT1_2024@reddit
If this were to be put into production, I wonder how much of it would be subscription based.
juko43@reddit
It was put into production as bmw i8 tho
Armybob112@reddit
Almost nothing, my i3 has app access for free forever and I don't think this would be any different, 2014 was a different time...

This still looks like a car from the future. Bold and brave. Meanwhile, the current BMW lineup looks like a proctologist's catalog of prolapses.
costafilh0@reddit
If only the i8 had a B58. It would have been a huge success, even as a hybrid.
