can i drive 50 miles bobtail like this
CatFew9359@reddit
Absolutely
Environmental-Pear40@reddit
You're low fuel warning usually comes on when you have about a hundred miles left or about 8-10 h idling depending on configuration. Personally, I'll think of it as 80 if I'm loaded 90 if I'm empty. Haven't ran out of fuel yet.
Ok_Bug_6470@reddit
Yep, my brakes on my Acadia say 100g each but the gauge runs off of 150g when I do math and refill
GumbysDonkey@reddit
My Cascadia has 160gal capacity and the fuel light comes on with 50gals leftover.
SeaRow556@reddit
Yes but this isn't necessarily a make appt before fuel up situation. I've ran 0 miles to empty and past 1/8th of a tank 65 miles in the middle of nowhere going up and down hills with 45k lbs of freight.... it was not fun and my truck needed new fuel filters after that....
COATHANGER_ABORTIONS@reddit
I always count the red as a hundred, give or take.
SnowCat6969@reddit
Give or take 100
COATHANGER_ABORTIONS@reddit
It's a Freightliner, the gauge is probably broken
Prune-These@reddit
Yes, thank you. I’ve been telling people that. They seem to go inaccurate as the rig gets older.
Safe_Fail_568@reddit
Freightliners have gone to shit. Everything stops working or falls apart
GabtsbyForaDay@reddit
Haha mine works and sometimes doesn’t got close to being the last gas station then it went to zero… pulled in and filled up completely. I always use the trip b now after every fill up
Wicell@reddit
Most likely. You gotta think, that gauge doesn't show about 20% of your tank capacity. I've driven down to that point before and only had to put in 156G to have my tractor full, with two 120G tanks.
ladrilare07@reddit (OP)
I made it. Thanks everyone
DathBlah@reddit
Oh course you did. Easy
J-Kensington@reddit
Check your average mpg, and multiply it by your tank capacity. (So 200 gallons and 6mpg is 1200 miles.)
Then think of your fuel gauge in mileage rather than liquid volume. (1/8 of a tank is 150 miles for a 1200 mile tank.)
Empty you can usually add 50% fuel economy (6mpg becomes 9mpg), and bobtailing you can usually double your mpg (6mpg becomes 12).
And when you fill up, just check how many gallons you got compared to how low your gauge was. If your gauge said 1/2 tank on a 200 gallon tank, but you didn't get 90+ gallons, then you know your gauge is wrong, for example.
Your trip odometer is a better fuel tracker than your fuel gauge.
Even better is to use a notebook to record your odo reading when you fill, since you probably need your odo reading at the pump anyway. Next time you have this question, just check your notebook for how long it's been since you fueled.
DathBlah@reddit
TLDR
tempicide@reddit
Only thing I'd like to critique about this is that most fuel tanks intentionally prevent you from filling to capacity. While you may have two 100 gallon tanks, a somewhat significant portion lies above the fuel port. This forces you to leave empty space to ensure there is room for expansion of the contents as the temperature rises both due to weather and operation of the vehicle. Two 100 gallon tanks likely cut you off before you've reached 175 gallons total, I'm pretty sure the freightliner I had with Schneider only actually let me fill to 160.
J-Kensington@reddit
175÷2 is 87.5 gallons.
That's where the "90+ gallons" on a half tank number came from.
DathBlah@reddit
Yep.
Apart-Ad1652@reddit
What a stupid dual gauge.
AndromedanPrince@reddit
cascadia shit
AndromedanPrince@reddit
yup! i drpve 72mi woth some to spare woth a trailer. wouldnt trust it in my current older mack tho
Pm_Me_Mtn_Bikes@reddit
You’re fine 100 loaded
howla456@reddit
Bob tail you’ll be fine. Send it!
Kindly_Region@reddit
One way to find out, send it
MostOriginalNameEver@reddit
I've pushed 80 with less than that.
Introverted-headcase@reddit
Not all gauges / tanks are actually empty at E! I’ve known some to go empty before the needle reaches E.
Spartan9802@reddit
And some that have a whole 40 gallons at E
Virel_360@reddit
That’s my truck, and my previous truck. Both Freightliner when the meter reads completely zero they both have 40 to 50 gallons left still.
Spartan9802@reddit
There were two or three Kenworth trucks at my last job that had that issue. And they were really bad about getting to empty, but then you were still able to go X amount of miles for having anywhere from 25 to 40 gallons left in the tank.
Virel_360@reddit
I have two 100 gallon tanks, when the fuel light comes on and the meter reads completely zero I go to fill up at the truckstop all the way to the top and it’s only 150 gallons, which means that when the fuel light comes on I still have 50 to 60 gallons in reserve that the meter is not measuring. You’ll be fine.
MajorHymen@reddit
50 is pushing it, I’d say you might make that if it was still just at or above the line but you’re under it already. I’d be surprised if you have 30 miles
chrochtato@reddit
not with that engine off
SecureDepth1312@reddit
Mine goes from a quarter tank to E real fast, turns into a head game wondering how it got so low so fast then go to fill up and find that I still had like 2 gallons left.
Laffenor@reddit
Can you bobtail 400 miles on a full tank?
Of course you can.
Wasabi-Kungpow@reddit
I've driver 50 miles on E fully loaded. You got this.
amazingmaple@reddit
This is why you keep track of your fuel mileage and how much you put in the tank to the relation of what the gauge says.
InvstrJester@reddit
What if we said No ?
planetbuster@reddit
when you run out, youll have time to sit around and clean that truck interior
keytiri@reddit
Every freightliner I’ve had had about +20 gallons to its markings. We run 2 80 gallon tanks, so 1/8th was actually 1/4th; my Peterbilt was scarily accurate, I originally thought it had larger tanks due the cab scaling out heavy, but imagine my surprise when I only put in 139 gallons. The tanks were filthy, and the capacity unreadable, so I worked on cleaning it up to confirm that it was also 160 gallons total 😱; I just don’t like running them that low, but sometimes the company gets anal about fuel stops.
DaphneBerryShake@reddit
One time I was in windy Wyoming making it the next fuel stop, and I had about 75 miles to go and the fuel light came on. Made it to the fuel stop and the needle was resting on E. Filled it up to the brim and it only took around 170 gallons. So you’ll be fine from my experience
Tank4396@reddit
I can’t speak for yours specifically, but I’ve driven from Kansas City to Springfield, MO from slightly below that last tick. Was I stressed the whole time yes, did I make it… also yes. Also was pulling a loaded flatbed trailer. That truck was wild
TripleTrucker@reddit
Easily
MillhouseJManastorm@reddit
No not with zero oil pressure 😜
MustangMark83@reddit
I’ve always found when the low fuel light is on you have 40-50 more gallons. It’s not actually empty
Pitiful-MobileGamer@reddit
Bobtail, your easily good for 100 miles. When in go take a flashlight and get a good look at your tank level. I have never seen a Freightshaker with an accurate tank gauge, it could be showing in and you still have 20 gallons.
MachStyle@reddit
I've gone farther on E with smaller tanks that what you have I'm sure. Twin 75 gallon tanks at E will get me 100+ miles and fill up will only be around 115 gallons out of 150 gallonz(135 real fill capacity)
duhrun@reddit
Yes but throw out all your luggage to save weight.
Farmhand30-06@reddit
Easily.
GreyGhost878@reddit
Well, you have to tell us how this goes because we're invested now.
I don't like to take chances since running out of fuel is expensive and stupid. Better off putting 20 gals in asap and then driving 50 miles to your better fuel stop. But bobtailing you're getting incredibly high mpg so probably not going to run out . . . unless you are in hilly terrain and then you can lose prime on an uphill . . .
deezkeys098@reddit
Between every mark is about 150 miles
IntergalacticJihad@reddit
Take a look in your tank to see how empty it actually is
EmotionalBar2533@reddit
Send it!!!!
december151791@reddit
Yes.
Electronic_Cod7202@reddit
Fuel gauges are just scams made by the roller dog people.
Unique-Ad-2544@reddit
Yup I've done it multiple times 20+ miles fully loaded but with the needle completely at the bottom your good
RoamingNomadSoul@reddit
For sure like a breeze
_FearMose_@reddit
Yes. Solid 100 miles left. Possibly 200 depends on tank size
StonedTrucker@reddit
Depends on how bug your tabks are. 200 gallons total and youve got plenty left. 50 gallons total and you might not make it
yuneyesse23@reddit
150 miles when the light start blinking..100 miles when the light still solid
Freightshaker000@reddit
I ran my Classic so low that the needle stopped bouncing; once stopped, I put 285 gals into 300 gal tanks.
BackgroundMoney5931@reddit
Yeah
Rare_Indication_3811@reddit
Its just want to scare you
CitizenKC2027@reddit
Let me know how much breakdown laughs at you when you call in no fuel.
kingsnow18@reddit
Bobtailing I bet you can, sent it
HowlingWolven@reddit
Yeah lick the stamp bro, if your truck is anything like mine it’s got like forty gallons under the needle.
LongjumpingCat6642@reddit
Maybe
librarydirective@reddit
Yes. I did this yesterday and I wasn’t sure if I was gonna but I did 80 miles.
Justcrusing416@reddit
Your okay 👍
Sad-Sir4306@reddit
You can drive like 200 miles
