Can you talk about humpback whales without thinking of this?

I remember watching this every time it would come on PBS during the summer. Anytime whales come up as a topic this pops in my head. It also was one of Ben Affleck's first roles as a child actor.

Shut up , you just named my only two memories of the show also. The ones that run through my head about 4 to 5 times a year. Tbh and TMI, it's what led to my repressed tween fantasy of a chilly Brad Pitt somehow needing me to be the one to offer a body heat transfer life-saving scenario. That's exactly how old I am.

What about where they demonstrate hitting the hammer on the railing to get the deaf woman's attention.

I was in the 8th grade when we watched it during science class. One day, the boy who sat across from me said he heard that today's episode would have one of the guys get naked in bed with the Captain. I said, shut, up! You're such a pervert! Yep, it turned out to be the hypothermia episode.

Crazy that transparent aluminium from the movie is now a real-life technology, often called Aluminum Oxynitride (AlON) or "transparent ceramic". It's a solid, transparent material made from aluminum, oxygen, and nitrogen, offering extreme durability for military armor and specialized, scratch- resistant windows.
Miami_Mice2087@reddit
til transparent aluminum started in TOS. riker says the windows are made of it on the Enterprise D in TNG.
agent_uno@reddit
Transparent ceramics (some with aluminum as a component) have been in existence since the 1960s, and variations of it have been used as windows on the space shuttle and various jets, as well as bullet resistant glass.

Somewhere between 4th and 5th grade with the guys cuddling together were constant gay remarks. Not the fact of survival. That unfortunately is what I remember. And no I am straight, and saw it as a brilliant way to survive as well as the desalination process
agent_uno@reddit
Did you follow the Will Steeger/Antarctica expedition? Third grade for me. They did an episode where they also did this to warm up one of the guys on the team. But at least that was grown men, and not a 12yo boy.
Feralest_Baby@reddit
To this day I don't understand why we don't just build giant greenhouses to passively desalinate water instead of the energy-intensive plants that are used some places.
agent_uno@reddit
It takes a long time to produce a small amount of water. Like maybe a pint or two per day for a 10 foot ditch. Not very efficient for more than survival.
Mythbusters did it on one of their duct tape episodes and it yielded a very small amount of water.

Since the 1970s, humpback whales have made it nearly back to estimated prewhaling numbers, like 93%. It feels easy to forget we can do good things as a species when we get together to do it.

Same thing with bald eagles. As a child in the 80s, I could count on less than two hands the total number I had seen in my whole life up until around 2000. superfizzlibrarian@reddit
Yes. It came out in 1984 and I watched it in 6th grade, it was a big deal because it had just been released.
DarksunDaFirst@reddit
Nope.
It was this series and our collective project in 7th grade that culminated in a whale watching trip, where we were fortunate to see them come close to the boat and do some stuff in a rather āpoeticā series, Iāll never forget it.
First we some some spouts in the distance and turned that way. Ā Whales got curious and approached us after we stopped. Ā They surfaced and looked right at us. Ā Did some flipper waves. Ā Then two of them did some full breaches with these humongous splashes. Ā Lastly they left while showing us the flukes.
And we knew all these terms and could talk about it in detail because of the project we all did.
I hated the writing component of it though. Ā Too artsy.Ā
Tenaciousgreen@reddit

We watched this in my 4th grade class. What I remember most is learning how to sign the alphabet (and I still remember it 40 years later).
sterbo@reddit
We saw this in 6th grade. I liked it and actually drew little comics of the show when it was on in class. The other kids mostly derided it and would say how āgayā it was (the parlance of the times) but thinking back, the idea of going away on a trip on a sailboat and doing little science experiments sounds so attractive and cozy, like a total fantasy.
I remember the water collecting episode, the deaf(?) woman (maybe she was blind?), the bearded captain.

I was a trainer at my previous job and after staring at my face for two weeks, new hires would tell me I kind of looked like Affleck. Romantically, I've always had the most interest from Latinas. I might also have issues. And that concludes my public therapy session of understanding my shipping for Bennifer.
