Which way do you pronounce VIN?

I've been having a great time watching gronks talk themselves out of vehicular misdemeanours and into felonies, but one thing I've noticed is that typically the YT commentary and the cops will say it like "Vee Eye En"
Here in England's prison I've only every pronounced it, and heard it pronounced, as VIN like Vin Diesel
I was wondering which way you say it, and if it's different by state
Traditional_Entry183@reddit
Ive always heard it like Vin Diesel too.
speedier@reddit
I though his name was vee eye en Diesel
Apprehensive-Pop-201@reddit
Same
boneyjoaniemacaroni@reddit
Saaaaame (I also worked in car business for 4 years and only heard folks whose first language isn’t English say it by letter rather than as a whole word).
shelwood46@reddit
Yep, spent years in the emergency services, I never heard anyone spell it out, they pronounced it Vin like short for Vincent.
Adorable_Past9114@reddit
only heard folks whose first language isn’t English
So Americans? 🤣
Traditional_Entry183@reddit
I can still remember my dad showing me what it was and what it did when I started driving in the early 90s. And any dealer or mechanic ive ever spoken to has said it the same way.
No-Profession422@reddit
Yup
TheKiddIncident@reddit
Yep, VIN like Diesel. Always.
NationalSort8150@reddit
I say it this way as well but I have heard people say like ven
Bob_Kark@reddit
Spelling it out defeats the purpose of abbreviation anyway. Just don’t call it a VIN number. Like ATM machine or Rio Grande river.
Outside_Narwhal3784@reddit
That’s the only way I know how to pronounce it, or heard it pronounced for that matter.
N2Shooter@reddit
This is the way.
2whatextent@reddit
Never heard it any other way.
ActuaLogic@reddit
Most people say "vin"
RVFullTime@reddit
Too many YouTube channels use AI-generated narration. Spelling out VIN is the type of error AI might make.
curiousleen@reddit
People will often say vin number… which is redundant because it’s a Vehicle Identification Number
DResq@reddit
Are you talking about Rob Gronkowski? Or does Gronk mean something else in England?
Woe_Bringer@reddit (OP)
I'm living in what was England's prison, not in England my bro
The best way i can describe "gronk" is: if you see someone do something really dumb, then when you're recounting the story later to your mates and need an all encompassing word to describe their stupidity
Let's be fair, stupidity knows no bounds. So instead of saying "I saw do " you say "I saw this gronk throw trash on the ground in front of a cop, when the cop told them to pick it up, they threw hands"
MyUsername2459@reddit
Are you trying to say Australia?
I mean, I know that western settlement in Australia began with an English penal colony, but I'm not used to people calling it "England's prison". If you say "England's prison" to an American, they'll think you're an inmate in the UK. . .and if you're saying "what was England's prison" they'll probably think it was some former prison turned into an apartment complex or something.
Australian slang has a reputation in the US for being hard to understand, so maybe that's where part of the issue is.
Ronnoc527@reddit
Thanks because I was still so confused. Especially since they were also talking about police and criminals.
pluck-the-bunny@reddit
I mean I immediately thought Aus when they typed it 🤷♂️
Donald_J_Duck65@reddit
I have no idea what your talking about.
hazcan@reddit
Do you mean the VIN number?
Woe_Bringer@reddit (OP)
RIP my inbox hahahaha, but thank you everyone who took the time to answer. The general consensus is Vin Diesel, but sometimes cops will V.I.N it over the radio
Much love from Australia 🇦🇺
Responsible-View-804@reddit
It’s almost always VIN like Vin diesel.
But it’s also very common to hear a redundancy with people saying “VIN number” “v-I-n number” would be much less likely
bloopidupe@reddit
I've only ever pronounced it as a word. Do cops ask for VIN numbers?
Woe_Bringer@reddit (OP)
On the videos I've seen they check the VIN on suspected stolen vehicles, or vehicles with mismatched plates to cars
Adjective-Noun123456@reddit
That recontextualizes things a lot.
Vin is a name, VIN is an acronym. You don't want to confuse the two over the radio, so you say them differently.
Woe_Bringer@reddit (OP)
As you haven't seen the videos I'm referring to I won't debate based on information you don't have
Instead, I will say that's a good point, well made. And upvote your comment
Cheap_Coffee@reddit
Right? Just living in the country wouldn't give us any information unless we saw the YT you saw.
/s, just in case.
Woe_Bringer@reddit (OP)
Based on the down votes I received, I guess I'm going to have to debate you using information from YT videos you haven't seen
Sorry, but Reddit has spoken 🤷
/j
Cheap_Coffee@reddit
Right. Lived experience doesn't hold a candle to YouTube videos .
Another Redittor has spoken.
Woe_Bringer@reddit (OP)
While I get the /s, if you'd only ever heard people from Perth talk about a popular but expensive toy, you'd be on Ask an Aussie saying "what the hell is 'lay-go'" because it is absolutely pronounced 'le-go' 🙂
Cheap_Coffee@reddit
Whatever.
Woe_Bringer@reddit (OP)
I was agreeing with you and shared an anecdote about differences within countries. But cool bro, whatever 🍻
Cheap_Coffee@reddit
Unh huh. I said 'whatever' first so you can't use it. Those are the rules.
pluck-the-bunny@reddit
20 years I’ve been doing this, every cop by me says vin (like the name) except a few rare occasions
peteroh9@reddit
Over the radio?
pluck-the-bunny@reddit
Yes
linkxrust@reddit
WTF channel are you watching? Sounds like some BS. lol. No one spells it out. And the cops already know the VIN when the license plate is scanned before he even approaches the vehicle.
Woe_Bringer@reddit (OP)
Sorry, maybe you missed it so I'll type slow and loud
ON. SUSPECTED. STOLEN. VEHICLES
and
VEHICLES. WHERE. THE. LICENCE. PLATE. DOESN'T. MATCH. THE. CAR
Jfc. Reading and comprehension champ. Reading and comprehension.
linkxrust@reddit
Yeah, you didnt say that on your post. lol
Woe_Bringer@reddit (OP)
That's true, and i apologize for coming at you like that. I answered another commenter who brought up something similar so i answered. Then saw your very similar comment and responded poorly
linkxrust@reddit
all good
linkxrust@reddit
Also youre prick with ears
Woe_Bringer@reddit (OP)
Yeah? Well you're an ear without pricks!
If i haven't completely misunderstood this reference, if it is a reference
linkxrust@reddit
The Wanderers?
Woe_Bringer@reddit (OP)
You may have the Fordham Baldies behind you, but i have Perry and Joey's Dad! 🍻
bloopidupe@reddit
Ah. That makes sense. If they are speaking over a radio to another officer, they would spell it out to make sure everyone understands what they are talking about
Sellum@reddit
Yes, sort of. If you were communicating it over a radio you would spell it out with a phonetic alphabet. So rather than saying Vee Eye En you would say Victor India November.
RsonW@reddit
Vehicle identification number numbers
thomsenite256@reddit
atm machine
uniquecleverusername@reddit
I'm pretty formal, so I like to say "Yes, I have the VIN ID number that identifies my vehicle."
bloopidupe@reddit
I knowwwwww. I do this at work too. It drives me nuts, I stop and stare, but the sentence sounds weird in my head without the extra number.
SimplePassenger8752@reddit
Never heard anyone sound out the acronym i just say it and have heard it said like Vin diesel im in illinois
nitsujenosam@reddit
Fun fact, an acronym is pronounced like a word (VIN, NASA, etc), otherwise it’s just an “initialism,” e.g., FBI, CIA, etc.
teh_maxh@reddit
No it isn't. The first use of "acronym" in English was for PGN.
nitsujenosam@reddit
How hard is it to google something?
https://www.etymonline.com/word/acronym
peteroh9@reddit
It's implied by your page, but follow the link on it to initialism:
Additionally, if you look up other definitions of acronyms, you will see that they often state that the term can broadly be used to include initialisms.
To not cherry pick etymonline over Wiktionary, look at the definition there: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/acronym
Insisting that they are distinct just makes you a (relatively uninformed) pedant.
pgcotype@reddit
Everyone I know says it Vin Diesel. I try to avoid saying, "VIN number" because it's redundant, but a lot of people do.
krept0007@reddit
I would say it's misleading more than redundant since VINs have letters
Anand999@reddit
Most modern VINs aren't even all numbers, so it's all kind of messed up.
crafty_j4@reddit
You have a point. Same thing as “PIN number”
pgcotype@reddit
Or ATM machine
Sweaty-Move-5396@reddit
Gonna type my PI number into the AT machine
Better-Passenger-200@reddit
Or Jeb Bush

Jeb!
gtrocks555@reddit
Jeb Bush is my favorite one hahaha
GreenZebra23@reddit

DizzyLead@reddit
Ah, RAS Syndrome.
OrcaFins@reddit
Or tuna fish
iaminabox@reddit
Not exactly. Tuna fish isis what you get in a can. It's used to deffentiate from fresh.
OrcaFins@reddit
Canned tuna is still fish.
MissFabulina@reddit
Is it though? Fresh tuna does not smell anything like the atrocity that comes in a can.
OrcaFins@reddit
Whether you like it or not, it comes from the same animal.
rockettaco37@reddit
This one always bugs me the most
SneakyCroc@reddit
*it's tautological.
Gertrude_D@reddit
I don't bother to avoid it - I know it's redundant, but somehow it feels incomplete without saying VIN number or PIN number.
MonsieurRuffles@reddit
When I hear someone say VIN number or PIN number, it’s like fingernails on a chalkboard.
Zeverian@reddit
Good.
krept0007@reddit
This is more a question of spelling out the acronym or speaking it as a word. Not necessarily pronunciation.
Spelling it out is initialism. Speaking it like a word is a psuedo-acronym
CryptographerEasy772@reddit
In the PNW (Pacific Northwest) region, I only have heard Vin (Diesel)
I can only imagine ai is hallucinating to produce some "vee eye en" method of saying it
Slight_Literature_67@reddit
I've always heard it as VIN like Vin Diesel.
ImLittleNana@reddit
I’ve heard that word a gajillion times and never once heard someone say it like an initialism. It is a pet peeve of mine though when people say VIN number. WTF do they think the N stands for? Do they not know it’s an acronym?
machagogo@reddit
As a word, like Vin Diesel.
I have never heard anyone ever spell it out in conversation. Not even cops on a show or in a YouTube video.
Zeverian@reddit
Old people say the letters, then half the time add number at the end. "V.I.N. Number' like ATM Machine. Working car Insurance you will hear it so much you start saying it. Then the other half of Old people bitch that it's redundant.
StatementEcstatic751@reddit
What old people? I'm almost 40 and have never heard it spelled out, unless someone was having a hard time hearing it and the speaker was getting annoyed about it. My parents are actual Boomers born in the early 1950s, and my grandparents hit their 90s before they died a few years ago. None of them spelled it out. My friend who is in her 50s worked at an auto parts store for a while, and she said she never heard it spelled out, only spoken as Vin rhymes with bin.
Drslappybags@reddit
Maybe over the phone insurance companies just for clarification.
Zeverian@reddit
Good catch. But that is not why they do it.
Drslappybags@reddit
Hey, just a thought.
Zeverian@reddit
Wow. I really care.
Decent-Bear334@reddit
No, they don't.
Zeverian@reddit
Like you would know.
Decent-Bear334@reddit
And you do?
Zeverian@reddit
About my personal experience? Yes.
Decent-Bear334@reddit
Your personal experience doesn't equate to anything.
Zeverian@reddit
Nor does yours.
___HeyGFY___@reddit
I suppose it depends on your definition of old. I was born in the 60s, driving since the mid 80s, and I've never heard anyone initialize it.
Zeverian@reddit
I was born in the 70s I consider you old. You are right in the demographic I was talking about.
CamiJay@reddit
It’s not a contest. Age is also subjective. I was born in the 2000s so from my perspective and in my opinion, you both are old bags. It doesn’t make you less of a person.
Zeverian@reddit
I never said it did. Wow yall younguns get up in yalls feels quick.
I am definitely Old. No doubt.
MonsieurRuffles@reddit
Old person here - I’ve always pronounced as a single word, never spelling out the initials.
Zeverian@reddit
Good for you specifically.
Practical-Ordinary-6@reddit
But you've never ever heard a young person say that, right? I don't believe you.
Zeverian@reddit
What?
Wow so brave.
hairball45@reddit
Born in the 1940s I qualify as "old" and I've never once heard it spelled out. It's VIN, rhymes with pin and tin. Into cars for somewhere past 70 years.
Zeverian@reddit
Oh so stunning and brave.
eugenesbluegenes@reddit
What the fuck?
big_sugi@reddit
They’re a troll. Or just generally obnoxious and annoying, which amounts to the same thing.

Woe_Bringer@reddit (OP)
We must watch different channels 😆
machagogo@reddit
you watching videos with shitty AI voiceovers, not actual people speaking?
jek39@reddit
I think you were just watching something with an auto AI voiceover
GeronimoHero@reddit
I worked in the car industry for like 15 years. The only way it’s ever pronounced is as a word “vin” not as an acronym.
LoudSheepherder5391@reddit
That makes it an acronym.
linkxrust@reddit
Never heard it like that dude.
Slippery-Pete76@reddit
I’m wondering if the videos he watches have that shitty AI voiceover that mispronounces everything.
linkxrust@reddit
Its Vin. Like Vin diesel. Youre tripping balls.
crtclms666@reddit
Because you couldn’t be mistaken, amirite?
JellyfishFit3871@reddit
My husband was a cop of some stripe (military, city, deputy, etc.) from the late eighties on. He and all of his colleagues that I know of say Vin as a single word. They'd look at you funny if you spelled it out.
JellyfishFit3871@reddit
And cops always seem to use the NATO phonetic alphabet, so they'd generally either just say "vehicle identification number," Vin, or "Victor India November." Not vee eye in.
molten_dragon@reddit
I work in the auto industry and I've only ever heard it said as a word. Never heard anyone pronounce the letters.
wieldymouse@reddit
Like Vin Diesel.
Darkdragoon324@reddit
It’s an acronym, I pronounce it like a word.
Just-Brilliant-7815@reddit
VIN like Diesel
CaptainPunisher@reddit
Vin Scully. I can't tell you the last time I heard someone spell it out.
zon5string@reddit
VIN number. Like ATM machine and PIN number.
Slight_Manufacturer6@reddit
Minnesota, USA and only heard it called vin like Vin Diesel.
maggy_boi_x@reddit
I pronounce it Vin, like Vin Diesel, too. At the same time, o only ever put thought into how I pronounce it while I'm at the DMV or local courthouse.
cool_weed_dad@reddit
Vin like Vin Diesel.
I had never once in my life heard anyone spell out the letters.
WiseQuarter3250@reddit
similar to when, or win.
But VIN is technically an acronym that stands for Vehicle Identification Number.
Most folks say it as a monosyllabic term. I've never heard anyone in real life spell it out as V-I-N.
Woe_Bringer@reddit (OP)
Thank you. As a person who knows a smidge about cars, I was aware that VIN was an acronym
Thank you for you response to my question though
SabresBills69@reddit
VIN in a lot of ways have become a word on its own like Scuba ( self contained underwater breathing apparatus)
Woe_Bringer@reddit (OP)
TIL SCUBA is an acronym
ComprehensiveCoat627@reddit
So is laser
Woe_Bringer@reddit (OP)
Ohh man, I did know that in some recess of my brain. Couldn't tell you what it stands for though, and as I don't user lazers in my day-to-day I guess it got pushed aside

Curmudgy@reddit
Canola is a portmanteau, not an acronym.
Sorry. I read too much Wikipedia, which is very fond of the words portmanteau.
SabresBills69@reddit
I don’t consider it one.
brunch— between breakfast and lunch
motel — motor + hotel where you park outside the room
canola is. CAN-O-LA. Canada - oil - low acid This is not like the others above.
Woe_Bringer@reddit (OP)
TIL
Ok, but tf is snafu? .I'm fully invested now
Curmudgy@reddit
SNAFU == Situation Normal, All F*d Up.
SabresBills69@reddit
Google acronyms thst becamecwords
minnick27@reddit
So is TASER. It stands for Thomas A. Swifts Electric Rifle. Thomas Swift isn't the inventor, he is the title character in 100 novels dating back to 1910. He also doesn't have a middle initial, that was added by the actual inventor Jack Cover because TASER reads better than TSER
El_Polio_Loco@reddit
If it's being said like that in a youtube video my first assumption is AI
cooking2recovery@reddit
I was going to suggest AI videos as well. Cops pulling someone over is a really common AI prompt to go viral. There are accounts that just spam different versions.
Dr_Watson349@reddit
When does not sound like win.
makestuff24-7@reddit
Depends on your regional accent's vowel shift, or lack thereof.
WhoWouldCareToAsk@reddit
It’s always VIN as the dude’s name. I’ve never heard anyone spell it out letter by letter.
Young_Bu11@reddit

Got to keep it classy.
Spirited_Ingenuity89@reddit

If they were communicating over a radio maybe they were spelling it out more for clarity?
_WillCAD_@reddit
Everyone I've ever met, when using the term in casual conversation, says Vin like Vin Deisel.
The only time anyone spells out the three letters is when they're trying to explain that saying "VIN Number" is a repetitive redundancy that says the same thing twice.
AcanthaceaeOk3738@reddit
Definitely the Vin Diesel way.
I also hear plenty of "vin number" and even some "vehicle vin number."
kristtt67@reddit

donuttrackme@reddit

intoxado91@reddit

ByWillAlone@reddit
VIN is a true acronym...which means it's an initialism pronounced as a word.
If I heard someone speak the individual letters instead of saying the word, I would immediately ask them how they pronounce "NASA".
RLsSed@reddit
Always a word, like Vin Diesel
Kyle81020@reddit
I’ve heard it both ways. Pronouncing it as a word is much more common.
krendyB@reddit
Like Vin Diesel. 🤷♀️ Sometimes I say VIN number, even though I know that’s wrong.
Sujnirah@reddit
V I N. All separately.
dontforgettowriteme@reddit
VIN like Diesel.
Another one that's weird when spelled out is ASAP. Why are people saying A S A P when it's more efficient to say "ay sap?" It's a little ironic that people prolong pronunciation on something that means "do it quickly." Lol
Sweet_Cinnabonn@reddit
Both, depending on context.
Probably Vin like Diesel is most common
SnooChipmunks2079@reddit
People trying to sound proper or official will probably say V. I. N. but most normal people say "VIN Number" which is of course redundant but still common.
lithomangcc@reddit
its an acronym; it's pronounced as a word that rhymes with win.
RedSolez@reddit
Only southerners pronounce it like that. There are many dialects in the US. Northeasterners say VIN like Vin Diesel
MiketheTzar@reddit
Nah as a representative of the Southern Delegation we say VIN. Maybe deep in the swaps of Louisiana they say Veen, but I ain't never heard it said that way near me.
Overall_Occasion_175@reddit
You guys do spell out all of HVAC though, instead of just saying the H and then "Vac", a single syllable like the beginning of "vacuum", which drives me nuts on home improvement shows.
Loisgrand6@reddit
Again-a southerner and I say H Vac. Most advertisers say H Vac in my region
MiketheTzar@reddit
That's a weird hyper regional thing. I see it change at random all across the South
Loisgrand6@reddit
Wrong. Southerner here and I pronounce it like the name
RedSolez@reddit
When you say it like the name Vin are you using one syllable or 2? Because when I hear someone from Arkansas say the name "Ben" it sounds like "bin" with the vowel stretched to 2 syllables, like "bi-yin" said real fast.
Loisgrand6@reddit
One syllable
-Moose_Soup-@reddit
I have literally never heard someone spell out the acronym like that out loud.
UnprovenMortality@reddit

Hey-Just-Saying@reddit
In the USA, I've heard it both as "VIN" like Vin Diesel and also said as "V. I. N. number" which is redundant (like ATM machine), but people still say it. As long as you know what they mean, I don't see that it matters.
panic_bread@reddit
Vin number, which is obviously redundant, but that’s how it’s said.
MISProf@reddit
I normally hear it as a word UNLESS I’m teaching a database class and using it as an example of a primary key. Some of my students will pronounce the letters.
JadedDreams23@reddit

Itzagoodthing@reddit

duke_awapuhi@reddit
I work in the auto industry. I say it like Vincent
qrysdonnell@reddit
I would say it like VIN, but working in IT I’ve noticed that in the UK they pronounce a lot more acronyms than we do here. So on generally you would hear the letters spelled out more often here than over there. V.I.N. sounds a little strange but not too bad to me. Some things like PIN versus P.I.N. both sound equally good to me.
Things like NES or SNES are more commonly heard pronounced in the YouTube age to me, but they still sound weird pronounced to me.
MaximumPlant@reddit
Vin as in the Diesel
I also work in autobody, most people say Vin unless they work at a dealership in service.
WebHungry1699@reddit
Both are correct.
Vee eye n is just because it's an acronym. So those people are technically correct .
V. I. N = vehicle identification number,
But when said like a word (how most people really say it) it's spoken as VIN the name.
Plato198_9@reddit
I have never heard someone say "Vee Eye En"
KW5625@reddit
I've been in the automotive world for 22 years.
Nobody in automotive says v i n. It's always VIN like Vin Diesel and ODO like Chief Odo from DSD
Yeegis@reddit
Same way
MadDocHolliday@reddit
I work in the parts department of a car dealership,, so I deal with a lot of VINs constantly. I've heard a few people spell it out "vee eye in" over the 21 years I've been doing this, but those are VERY few and VERY far between. I can't remember the last time I heard it. The overwhelming majority of people just say it as the word VIN.
MountainTomato9292@reddit
I’ve never heard anyone spell it out, just say it as a word like Vin.
smile_saurus@reddit
It sounds like the things you have seen is the cops spelling out VIN as V-I-N. I am a 911 dispatcher and we (and the cops) say Vin, as in Vin Diesel. I have never in my life heard any cop pronounce it as Vee-eye-en. Not once.

cooking2recovery@reddit
It’s just like pin. Definitely not P-I-N, and lots of people do say “PIN number”
Woe_Bringer@reddit (OP)
I say VIN number too, but that's because I refer to a VIN number like once a year, so it's a combination of not saying enough to train myself out of it, and not saying it enough so when I do then there's no mistaking what I'm talking about
I haven't said ATM or ATM machine in forever. Me and the people I interact with typically will say "I need to get cash out" rather than "I need to go to the ATM"
jessper17@reddit
As an insurance person, VIN, like Diesel.
ABelleWriter@reddit
Ok, I'm dying to know why you associate VIN with prison???
Woe_Bringer@reddit (OP)
I live in Australia 🍻
SmoovCatto@reddit
I've only ever heard it pronounced Eric Sinclair
brillig_vorpal@reddit
This may be an AI or text-to-voice thing. I’ve noticed some videos that appear to have obvious computer-generated narration often do this with abbreviations or initialisms that are commonly pronounced as a words, like VIN and ICE.
El_Polio_Loco@reddit
I'll say, if I hear weird pronunciation of words like VIN, I'm going to assume it's an AI speech program.
So many youtube videos are just AI generated trash now.
IHaveBoxerDogs@reddit
I’ve only heard it pronounced like the name. I’ve mostly heard it when buying a car or dealing with the DMV.
LSBm5@reddit
Like vin diesel.
Numerous_Delay_6306@reddit
Vin just like vin Diesel baby
Maronita2025@reddit
They are NOT pronouncing a word they are telling you the initial. VIN is NOT a word but rather stands for “vehicle identification number.”
Woe_Bringer@reddit (OP)
Ohh man, really? Ahh I didn't know it actually stood for something! Thanks champ
Now I'm gonna have a durry then head to the servo to get some pettie before I go to maccas. I've only got a couple of rock lobsters on me, so I'll have to go full povo mode
lecturing me that VIN isn't a word. Good on ya mate
reyadeyat@reddit
Is "pettie" slang for petrol? It's the only word that I don't recognize, google wasn't helpful, and that's my best guess based on context.
Woe_Bringer@reddit (OP)
Saw a response to my antagonistic comment and came here ready for a verbal scrap, saw a genuine question, now I'm all deflated 😆
I'd call you the c-bomb, and given your understanding of Aussie slang I feel you'd take it as the compliment it is. But I don't want to get banned hahaha
You're 100% on the money, it's a bit old and not used so much as far as I can hear, but pettie = petrol. A bit older than that is "petal", but that's my parents era
I do always get a tickle out of us sharing "Tarjay" for Taget
reyadeyat@reddit
Very culturally insensitive of me to ask a genuine question instead of insulting you, honestly.
Thanks!
TheLeopardMedium@reddit
Do you say N-A-S-A, too?
Maronita2025@reddit
I do NOT spell out VIN like those you mention. I would say “VIN” as if it is a word. I also would say NASA rather than say the initials.
TheLeopardMedium@reddit
Ok then I do NOT disagree
_Smedette_@reddit
I’ve never heard V-I-N, always “vin”. From Oregon.
Online_Discovery@reddit
It's an acronym, not an initialism
There is a difference. It's not like there is a matter of opinion on if you pronounce FBI as fi-bi or spell S-C-U-B-A
Vachic09@reddit
Vin rhymes with pin
Both_Painter_9186@reddit
I’ve literally never, ever, ever, heard it pronounced any other way. It would be wince worthy, like “correct them on the spot” behavior to head someone pronounce it differently. I’ve lived in New England, the Deep South, and the Mid Atlantic.
You sure the YT videos aren’t just narrated by AI? Or maybe the guy running the channel’s a moron? Or maybe english is not their native language.
Woe_Bringer@reddit (OP)
Last one i heard was on The Hidden Files
Dude sounds like he could host the next Unsolved Mysteries tbh 🍻
rockettaco37@reddit
I've always said it the same as the name
Philcoman@reddit
I’ve heard cops say”V.I.N.” Maybe it’s required for them, accuracy or something. Everyone else just says “vin.”
rattlehead44@reddit
Vin. As in Vin Diesel.
Straight_Mind_5192@reddit
VIN as in VIN Diesel, in northeast US. I have never heard anyone say "V-I-N" in my life. I have actually heard ppl refer to it as "vehicle identification number" also, but never "V-I-N"
Woe_Bringer@reddit (OP)
Ohhh man, saying the whole: vehicle identification number, is the most Canberra thing I've heard. Somewhere along the lines your countrymen and mine are related
Warm_Objective4162@reddit
I’ve been around some law enforcement that spells out every acronym like that. I’m sure they do it for clarity.
Woe_Bringer@reddit (OP)
That makes sense, so there's absolutely no debating what was meant. Thank you 🙂
queenjazzyjazz@reddit
I work in the fleet legalization industry. It's vin like Vin Diesel. No one says V I N.
skaliton@reddit
'win' with a v
Ainjhel32@reddit
Grew up in the Midwest and I've always heard and said vin as a word. The only time I've ever heard it actually spelled out is when an obviously dumb cop is trying to sound smarter to gain credibility.
Smart_Engine_3331@reddit
I've always pronounced it like Vin Diesel and so does everyone i know.
TomBu13@reddit
I always say vin like vin diesel
