what’s a car that surprised you with how comfortable it is?
Posted by Tosh97@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 210 comments
not something marketed as luxury, but a car you didn’t expect much from that ended up being really comfortable for daily driving or long trips
for example, for me it was a Lexus ES, super smooth and quiet in a way I didn’t expect at first
What car caught you off guard like that and what made it so comfortable?
not-a-toad@reddit
Brz but maybe because im coming from shitty tiny 90s and pre smog cars and its the first modern car ive ever really owned
VarmintTheCritter@reddit
Chevy pickups from the 90s have amazing ride quality. My K2500 feels like I'm sitting in a big comfy sofa that also does highway speeds.
Also, the crotch cooler vent combined with working A/C is the height of luxury 😂
rmill127@reddit
The term is “chode blower”
VarmintTheCritter@reddit
I've also heard "ball chiller"
denizenbro@reddit
Fellow ‘97 K2500 owner here and couldn’t agree more. Honestly enjoy driving it more than my ‘23 MB GLE450
VarmintTheCritter@reddit
That's an interesting spread of vehicles! I would be less comfortable in a GLE450 just because of worrying about scratches. Meanwhile, I can touch up my Chevy with a spray can in a pinch 😅
treewizardballoon@reddit
My 98 Tahoe felt like a living room on wheels
TimeOfRisenKing23rd@reddit
The old Buick. I forgot which model but it had 3.8 engine. I’m 6’3 it feels so good to put it on cruise control and stretch my leg in the middle since the shifter is on the steering wheel
cabernettherapy@reddit
I test drove a 2023 Kia Telluride and it was so smooth, comfortable, and quiet. I was surprised at how comfortable it was.
Blu_yello_husky@reddit
Practically all the cars ive owned have been luxury cars and the ones that weren't, werent comfortable, so unfortunately I dont have a real good answer for you. I will say that when I used to work at a Nissan dealership, I was shocked at how comfortable the Nissan Quest minivans were, for an import. It was almost as comfortable as a mid-level american sedan. Almost. Probably the only import id ever come close to calling comfortable, and thats saying alot coming from me. Usually I prefer my car seats to have very plush, pillow topped seats that you sink into.
Hungry-Job-3198@reddit
Name a car that suprised you with how comfortable they were and not a luxury vehicle. I will start, a Lexus es. Lmao you literally started with a luxury vehicle that’s directly marketed for that lol.
Ok-Gazelle-4847@reddit
That's what I was thinking. It literally stands for Luxury Export US.
KiraDog0828@reddit
Hyundai Ioniq 5 LTD
upsidedown-funnel@reddit
I drove one after driving a polestar… I think if you like minivans, you’d love the ioniq5.
KiraDog0828@reddit
Our AWD Limited could have driven circles around any minivan—except maybe the R63.
It drove pretty well for a car with its cargo space.
upsidedown-funnel@reddit
For a quick moment I thought the r63 was a reference to the r53. Both quick buggers. EV’s in general are pretty peppy. I was pleased to find mine did 0-60 in 4.5 seconds. If the regular person realized how fast they were, I think we’d see a lot more EV buyers.
CartoonistNarrow3608@reddit
So they drive nice
Mrepman81@reddit
Ioniq 5 seats are so comfy.
Novasfyre@reddit
Wild, I find the seats in mine mediocre at best.
KiraDog0828@reddit
I was surprised that they weren’t crappy.
They’re not on par with Volvo, Lincoln, etc., but they’re pretty good for a non-luxury brand.
Mrepman81@reddit
I guess my other reference points are a model 3 and a prius but ioniq seats are way better compared to those.
Spyderbeast@reddit
Not because it's cushy or anything, but the way my BRZ fits my body is just perfect (I am 5'6", normal woman height, and for example, the armrest is right where it needs to be on long drives, no pain, or odd angles). Younger people may not know the feeling yet, but ergonomics get more important over time. When your vehicle just fits you, it's nice
nkhatib@reddit
Current G80 M3, much more comfortable than I expected.
Confident_Chipmonk@reddit
The Porsche Turbo Macan with air suspension was a smooth riding highway machine
‘I’ve rented two BMWs with the advance driver assistance option. It’s a must have for my next purchase. It takes the edge off the mental effort needed on long trips. I arrived so much fresher than without it.

OlYeller01@reddit
What are you talking about? The last generation Panther platform was 5 star rated in just about everything but side impact (and that was only if it didn’t get optional side impact airbags).
I also have personal experience, flattening two does at 75 moh in my ‘01 Town Car and walking away with nothing but a bit of airbag burn on my forearm. Drove the car 30 miles back home, too.
thatsonlyme312@reddit
I was a cabbie for a bit almost 2 decades ago, so I have some experience with these.
Their handling is abysmal so you were more likely to lose control of the car and end up in a crash. But once you ended up in one, the sheer size of the car protected you reasonably well. I was in a pretty bad accident, airbags didn't even deploy (old cab, they were probably taken out) but I walked away with only a scratch. Semi truck driver who hit me though he killed me.
So I have mixed feelings about them. Reasonably safe in accidents, but I prefer not getting in one in the first place.
OlYeller01@reddit
The cabs got the short end of the stick with no rear swaybar like the Police Interceptors got. There’s a company (ADTR) that carries aftermarket sway bars and other performance improvements. I actually added their sway bars and some rear control arms to my Town Car. It’s not a Mustang Cobra in the twisties but it’s not a floaty boat anymore, either.
thatsonlyme312@reddit
Interesting. I can see how with improved handling they'd be much more fun to drive
rodeo302@reddit
They were some of the safest cars of their time. Which is one of the reasons why the were so popular with police departments. You could crash it at 90 and walk away with a few scratches and an airbag burn.
NoPersimmon7434@reddit
This is literally how I describe it. The Crown Vic is a La-Z-Boy with wheels.
Jo-18@reddit
Currently shopping for a Crown Vic or Town Car for my new daily driver. They’re slow as hell by modern standards, but they’re still fun to drive. Genuinely like driving a couch on wheels.
cansasky@reddit
Used to call my 91 the land yacht, it was like driving a couch with 6' of hood in every direction
rodeo302@reddit
God I love those cars. Had a 97 grand marquis and it was amazing. Only problem i had was driving in heavy snowfall, it liked to get stuck until the plows came out.
Satins_Cock@reddit
Quiet too, nothing fancy, just hundreds of lbs of dampening and weather seals

All buicks were comfy rides. Grandma cars for a reason.
krombopulousnathan@reddit
I travel a fair bit and use rental cars. The Nissan sedans really surprise me the most. Especially the Sentra. Would not have assumed it to be comfortable but it ate up 600 miles like a champ.
Half ton trucks are also very comfy cruisers now. I daily a Tundra; it’s our go to road trip trucks.
HankSpank@reddit
Nissans are GOATed for rentals. Highly predictable physical controls, comfy, good ergonomics, good visibility. The only problem I’ve ever had was an infotainment issue that meant I couldn’t use CarPlay and also couldn't charge my phone while using Bluetooth. That was just in one Sentra among a dozen flawless experiences.
I also loved my 11th gen Civic rental for the same reason. It had worse controls though.
Nissans are awesome rentals. I’d never own one though.
Fast_Valuable818@reddit
I had a Nissan Maxima 1994. That thing drove so smooth. I almost miss it. Best 2k I ever spent on a car and lasted me a long time.

I had a 25 Altima for a rental recently and I was actually really surprised at how much I enjoyed driving it. That acceleration is no joke.
Artistic-Salary1738@reddit
I got one as a rental (23/24) and thought it was awful for lack of pickup. My daily driver is a 6cyl turbo
krombopulousnathan@reddit
I thought the Altima is great for what it is. My daily is a twin turbo hybrid V6 with 440 hp and 583 lb ft of torque. But my daily does not get 40 mpg like I got in the Altima.
rcheneyjr@reddit

RockinRod412@reddit
You should try a gen ll Honda Ridgeline…. It’s often referred to as ‘The Gentleman’s truck’ and lives up to it.
krombopulousnathan@reddit
Oh yea my aunt and uncle have one and they ride very nice. I tow a 3k trailer in the mountains somewhat often and didn’t want to push the 5k tow rating on the Ridgeline. But otherwise would have made perfect sense.
infinitez_@reddit
I rented a Sentra and drove over 1500 km on a trip last summer. Absolutely phenomenal as a rental car, it was so comfortable and economical. It actually made me think of buying a Nissan for a second as my next car.
bluebanisterz@reddit

Same reaction to an Altima rental. Smooth ride and good passing power. Not my style overall, but a great option for a long weekend.

Traded in a 2018 MDX, and my daily is a Volvo. Guess it’s all what you’re used to on a regular basis. Also had a Kei Truck I sold at the same time, so to be able to combine the MDX and Kei, into something that was comfortable to drive on a regular basis, was a surprise for me at least.
RockinRod412@reddit

Ill leave stuff like Volvo's out seeing as luxury isn't supposed to be part of this.
Ford (merury)cougar was probably the most comfortable cruiser I've owned that isn't from a better brand and even then there isn't much in it between that and a Volvo about the only better one would be the s class And on the cheap side the fiat multipla ugly as sin handles way better than you would ever believe and such an easy relaxing place to sit in for a few hours.

Lucid Air GT. As a multi-SAAB owner, I know a lot of things about good seats. As a car enthusiast who has driven many, many cars, I know a thing or two about comfort. This thing has it all.
Then get on some twisty roads, and you're in a whole new vehicle. All of the mass disappears and it dances like a car half its size and the 1,000+ HP makes it move so incongruously with its physical appearance. Two years later and I still don't know if I'll ever drive a car quite like it.

Any modern minivan, really. Rented a Sienna for a trip, was fascinated by just how good it was. Silent, huge inside, fantastic fuel economy, turning circle and overall driving demeanour.

Don't forget us micro van folk. I've had my Mazda 5 for a few years and lost count of how many times I've loaded people/luggage/gear into this thing and gotten down the road for 8+ hrs trouble free. Stack on top the fact that it's a six speed? Bruh. A top box and receiver mounted gear rack turns this thing into a road trip monster. The ONLY thing I could want to find a fix for is finding airbags/helper bags for the rear suspension. It carries all of the above no problem, but it sure as hell squats like mad with all that junk in the trunk.

My transit van. It has incredibly basic seats, all manual and it’s amazingly comfortable. I take use it for long road trips. My one complaint is that it could have a lumbar. Compared to my husbands f150 lariet, with 10000 different controls, my poor back and tail bone are crying after even a short trip. The transit is also surprisingly fun to drive. Perhaps not a surprise but I got a Mercedes CLA as a hire car a couple of years ago I drove it from London to the north of Scotland and back and was constantly surprised by how quiet and comfortable it was

And CLA’s are basically the worst Mercedes

Volvo 240. It's the seat.

The back seat of the Chrysler Concorde was absolutely massive. I’ve only ridden in one but I was in sheer disbelief with how far the front seats felt from the back seat. Huge car on the inside.

I had a Chevrolet spark for a while, basic model, manual shift, it was reasonably comfortable, very practical, and I loved that car. Going way back, my boss had a 69 Mercury Marquis. Big old boat. I think this was the one you could put a glass of wine on the dash and it wouldn’t turn over, he replaced it with a newer model, but that never rode as good.

Lexus are literally known for being quiet and comfortable vehicles.

Raptors are supremely comfortable (as well as most other trucks with the right suspension upgrades)

Lexus LC 500.
Don’t understand how the engineers designed a perfect seat for someone who has a very bad back.

Love my Subaru Legacy sport, even after a 12 hour roadtrip, super comfy!

My 2004 4Runner. For what’s basically a light truck and how old it is, it’s really comfortable

My Ford Freestyle. I bought it from my grandfather when he went in the nursing home. It's the most comfortable car I've ever driven. Nice upright seating position, thigh support, leg room. Feels like a Volvo which it shared a platform with.

I have 3 for you;
Late 90s/early 00 Lexus ES. My aunt had one. I absolutely loved driving it.
4th gen Toyota Avalon. My parents leased one. I'd drive it as often as I could. Also had cooled seats when notany cars did. I seriously entertained buying it after the lease was up.
Chrysler 300s. I know, I know. Super comfortable with a V8 and 8spd transmission. Had it as a rental. Figured out it was an 80k car after I returned home. Yeah, nevermind.

2024 Ford f250. It was a rental, but I loved being huge; and the seats were great I have an 03 f350 lariat and a 05 Honda civic LX and it was definitely way more comfortable than both my vehicles combined.

Hyundai Santa Fe. It was a rental, but it was a smooth ride

I have a '98 Lexus ES300 and I agree heavily. It does a great job at feeling like a floaty land yacht despite being a front wheel drive sedan.

My mom just bought a 2022 trailblazer. I was really surprised with how smooth it rode for what it is. Decent pep and stupid good on gas.
