This is all I can afford to eat since becoming a homeowner.

Rice and peas every damn day since I bought this house. Who needs variety when you got mortgage payments eating your soul. This is fine, everything is fine. At least the rice is fluffy I guess
IslandGurl04@reddit
What happens if your water heater breaks or your roof springs a leak?
Soggy-Fly9242@reddit
My only thought is why did they buy a home they can’t afford
melxcham@reddit
My parents had to replace their roof and heat pump in the same month one year, and hearing the cost of that was enough to convince me not to buy until I have a very padded savings account.
Double0hobo79@reddit
Honestly I don't even know why people want to buy homes anymore.
Tough_Preparation830@reddit
I "own" a home, and I understand this sentiment. Even when I fully pay it off, the property taxes are so high that I am effectively paying rent to the local government. That being said, after 6 years of ownership, the rent of 2 bedroom apartments around me has finally overtaken my monthly payment for my 4 bedroom house. I'll need a new roof soon though...
lawfulauthority@reddit
lol nice try WEF
cynical-puppy26@reddit
I have an old house so it's probably skewed but my husband and I just realized that we match our mortgage payments in repairs every year. We are very proactive and like to do things right which I know costs more. But we also do what we can ourselves. Anyway, depending on the house I'd advise anyone to expect that and get a mortgage well below what you're approved for. The unexpected is way less stressful that way.
Also I think many people just getting by will finance these repairs. They either work out deals with the service companies, or you can even borrow against the equity in your home. These choices are more expensive long term and can end up really destroying people. But if you ever wonder how people make it, that's often it. People even finance their vehicles using the equity in their home. Absolutely do not do that. I just point it out to make sure people know that those who often look wealthy or like they have it all figured out are totally fucked financially.
IslandGurl04@reddit
I'm aware of financing options. This person can't afford to eat. How could they afford another loan payment?
tantowar@reddit
My wife and I recently bought a house, luckily no MAJOR fixes yet. I always considered myself a handy guy before hand, I know what tool to use and which end to hold it from. Since buying a house and having no money to pay anyone to fix our problems I’ve gotten considerably handier… YouTube is your best friend after buying a house.
LaRoseDuRoi@reddit
When we moved into our current place, which is a 120+ year old duplex, the landlord had just replaced the windows, the a/c, and the gas heater in the back room. Within the first couple of years here, both water heaters broke, my dryer broke, my fridge died, and then we had plumbing problems several times! Oh, and my furnace died just as it started getting really cold! I have never been so glad to be a renter in my life.
IslandGurl04@reddit
There's always something. It's crazy.
Unipiggy@reddit
Seriously, how did this person get a home loan if they can't even afford to eat properly?
justbleachmyeyes@reddit
Another loan probably
thelectricrain@reddit
Man, IDK but you can do rice and beans for cheap that's actually, y'know, seasoned.
krazye87@reddit
I came here to mention red beans. Huge bag isn't expensive.
ConfidenceFragrant80@reddit
At least if you added those it would actually have protein and a lot more nutrients
alou87@reddit
A cup of green peas has as much fiber and protein as kidney beans and MORE fiber and protein than the small red beans common in red beans and rice. It is also richer in ABK vitamins (both fat and water soluable). Beans have more calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium and a bit better on the glycemic index.
The difference in fatty acids per serving is negligible.
maxtinion_lord@reddit
TIL, maybe it's time I give peas a try..
KlausVonDope@reddit
Give Peas a chance.
alou87@reddit
I like them more in pasta dishes (like a quick pasta, parm, and pea dish), pasta salads, salad toppings, and stir fries.
You could not CATCH me eating them plain no seasoning with plain rice though.
Adventurous-Vast281@reddit
If you can find some good, fresh peas, or frozen peas in a pinch defrosted and dried, toss them with some evoo, garlic powder, salt, and I like to add a little corn starch. Air fry or put in a convection oven until crispy. Sooooo good.
alou87@reddit
Yesssss!!! Some horseradish on these will make those crunchy wasabi peas too!
Peas are ridiculously easy to grow as well.
LettingHimLead@reddit
My snow peas are kicking ass right now.
alou87@reddit
Yessss!!!! I have progress peas starting to climb right now. I just swear if the squirrels get to them like they did my corn, I am going to have a come apart.
I have been trying to get my corn started. Every. Single. Time. It sprouts, the %$f&* squirrels come uproot it and take what is left of the corn seed. And leave the shoot for me.
I am about to have a squirrelpocalypse on them.
I just KNOW they're going to try to take my pea pods.
ApprehensiveTour4024@reddit
That's nothing. I had squirrels dig up peppers. Hot peppers. Google says they don't even like those, and the spices bother them. They still ripped them all up. One by one. Now I have a feeder for the squirrels.
alou87@reddit
I have a feeder, tried the spices, gave them water, all the things. Their population is out of control here because my neighbor feeds them peanuts all day.
The worst was when one climbed into a nest of eggs and pillage it. 😐😐😐
LettingHimLead@reddit
Oh no. This is my first year trying corn, and now I’m worried. ☹️
ApprehensiveTour4024@reddit
If you really want to keep them away try one of those ultrasonic mosquito ringtone devices that plays a sound at like 20k Hz with a motion sensor. One of my neighbors has one that we set off when we walk the dog, I never see birds or squirrels at that house.

ProfDangus3000@reddit
Pasta e Piselli (Italian pasta and peas) is a cheap, easy weeknight dish. You just boil peas and pasta, take out some of the peas and pasta water, blend it, then stir in a hard cheese like Parmesan.
It's not as rich of a pea flavor as split peas, but it's hearty, creamy, pretty healthy, and cheap.
maxtinion_lord@reddit
That sounds excellent, definitely taking notes from y'all on these cooking ideas!
g0_west@reddit
All we are saayiiing, is give peas a chance
thelectricrain@reddit
You can mash potatoes and peas together (with seasoning ofc) to make a great puree.
Neat-Survey2796@reddit
Dude just...
You could add some lemon juice, soy sauce, green onion leaves, maybe fry the rice and peas a tad, add some salt and pepper and maybe even garlic powder, maybe throw some carrots or bell peppers or something in there, maybe some herbs to make it look better, and, for the love of god:
Add some meat. Like literally anything. Please 🙏🙏
railroadfrog@reddit
Red beans and rice, a little ground hamburger or turkey or some grilled chicken strips marinated in adobo- that’s a luxury meal as far as I’m concerned.

The recipe on the back of the MDH Chana Masala spice mix box might get there. 200g dry chickpeas, 20g of the spice mix, half an onion, 1-2 tomatoes. Serve with rice, makes 4 servings at about $0.50/serving before rice.
Beautiful-Produce-92@reddit
My guess is, they mean $1 per serving. I've definitely made a meal for 3 people costing $3. But I've made better meals for $6 and frozen half for another day.
mohragk@reddit
Potatoes are excellent because they provide loads of nutrients for the price you pay, especially right now.
Frozen vegetables are great, because they're often cheaper and most of the times of higher quality than stuff that's been lying around a ship for weeks.
Meat and other protein is pricey, but you actually don't need as much. The new guideline is 100 gram of meat... per week! Same goes for fish. Beans and other legumes are a great resource of protein and are cheap, especially when buying the dried stuff (which is superior in taste).
laydibug2477@reddit
This is my exact thoughts!! I commented a few examples… but the part where people just obviously don’t like to cook or don’t want to! You can come up with unlimited things to make for cheap, even though food isn’t cheap/affordable anymore, unless you get creative! But OP is spending money on peas and rice over and over. Could spend that money on variety. Just like these youngins who eat ramen only… you only eat the same thing over and over if you choose to (or if your parents are forcing you but that’s not this).
J_Bob24@reddit

wowokilltrythis@reddit

inivisible45@reddit
Dang! I wish cheese was that cheap in southern ontario!! The cheapest I can get it is $1/100g farmers marbled cheese. If I want any kind of decent hard cheese its like $3/100g even when I go to Costco
Memory_Future@reddit
Same here but the funny part is if I get the 8oz bag of slices of the exact same cheese it's only like $1.80. It doesn't make sense to me, it even has more packaging with the locking seal.

$3 apparently

for anyone on a budget: rice cooker, wash rice until mostly clear water, add water and rice to the cooker's instruction usually 2:1 respectively, add knorr tomato chicken bouillon, (optional: lime juice, salt, pepper, onion powder, chili powder, msg) measure with your heart here. then grab a pot. heat bit of water/chicken broth like 1/4cup, add some salsa or more bouillon. add a can of black beans and a can of pinto beans (rinsed!!!!!) cook and simmer for a bit, add cheese if you want here and more of the seasonings listed above to taste. add some butter and then mash or if you want it "creamy" like me, use an immersion blender. add water/broth/salsa to whatever consistency u like but this is $4~ 30 min mexican rice and beans and lasts me 3-4 days for dinner. if ur feeling ambitious u can do the crappy white queso w american cheese and pickled jals
Overall-Highlight523@reddit
if you don’t have a rice cooker or something like that (i got this recipe on instagram and cannot for the life of me remember who it’s from): in a large pan, you can add about 3 tbsp of oil (basically just barely covers the bottom of mine), let that heat up on medium-high heat, add 2 cups of rice, stirring constantly until golden brown (i get impatient with that part sometimes lol), then add 4 cups of water, an 8oz can of tomato sauce ($0.55 at my aldi), chicken bouillon powder (recipe said 2 tbsp but i usually do about 3 tbsp or just say f it and pour what i think is right now that i’ve gotten better at cooking), stir those in, bring to a boil and let it boil uncovered for about 10 minutes. then you can add 1.5 cups of water (my stove is not great and doesn’t heat consistently well so i usually don’t add more water at this point since there’s still a good amount of liquid in the pan for me) and bring it to a boil again. then you cover it and let it simmer for another 10 minutes. technically you’re supposed to let it rest undisturbed for 20 minutes after turning the heat off but we just go ahead and serve it at my house lol

Just ask the Irish
i_am_un@reddit
siriusmagnuss@reddit
Speaking of poverty and food insecurity.... Why do you associate the Irish specifically with potatoes?
ellenhuli29@reddit
History: The Great Irish Famine. I forget the year, but if I remember correctly weather conditions were so bad in Ireland, they couldn't even grow potatoes. Poverty conditions, poor soil, poor weather all caused the Irish potato famine.
siriusmagnuss@reddit
You've got pretty much all the details wrong but yeah, that's usually why people associate the Irish with potatoes. Now why do you think someone would want bring up the death and displacements of millions and millions of people in a shitty food porn post?
the_art_of_the_taco@reddit
it's always jarring when people make light of The Great Hunger like it was a big joke.
i_am_un@reddit
Tell me where I made light of it exactly
siriusmagnuss@reddit
Lol the chatgpt response. Where you made light of it was posting the Samwise GIF. It wasn't a famine, it was a genocide. We call it An Gorta Mór. Nobody would be reflexively associating the Irish with potatoes if it wasn't for the genocide. It's like making jokes about the indigenous of Turtle Island and diseased blankets or Jews and ovens.
Your very surface level regurgitation of history is pretty reductionist. The Irish of the time were subsisting mostly of potatoes - a relatively new crop - because the British priced them out of the rest of the produce and livestock that they were farming. They certainly didn't choose to do this and it definitely wasn't ideal... try living almost entirely off potatoes and see how you feel after a while.
By the time the blight hit, the British had been applying the colonial genocidal tactics that they later used in America, India and others on the Irish for centuries. Yes about 1 million died and about 1 million left during the period of blight but do you think they 1850 hit and everything went back to normal? Nope. The country and its people were completely broken. What was left of our culture after centuries of British oppression was all but destroyed. Someone who had visited Ireland before and after an gorta said that there was no longer any music in Ireland. Their spirit was crushed, workforce decimated and they memory of family and friends slowly dying with grass stains on their mouth didn't just vanish.
The population continued to decline for a hundred years, going down to 4 million... half of what it was before the blight. To this day it still hasn't recovered. Many of us refuse to refer to it as "the potato famine" because we want to disassociate the agricultural genocide of our people with a root vegetable.
If Irish people make jokes about potatoes think of it in the same way as African Americans using the "n" word. We've learnt to deal with our pain using humour which is why we're great craic but there's unimaginable amounts of suffering under there. An Gorta Mór was not that long ago, our country is still occupied and if you go around with this "ask the Irish about potatoes" nonsense we'll definitely think you a cunt.
i_am_un@reddit
Not Chat GPT, though I did Google certain dates. Samwise is a fictional character who likes potatos, that's all I meant by it, I love potatoes too, my favorite dishes include potatoes, there was no offense meant by it. I'm sorry if "Ask the Irish" was offensive as it wasn't meant to be at all. I'm Mexican American and I've been called a "Beaner" and a "Burrito Brother", and you know what, I really do like Beans and Burritos, and Bean Burritos, it was my cultures staple food, but looking back on it, I did fight a white man one time for calling me that even though I don't mind if my own people say it, so all I can say is that I brlieve I understand where you are coming from with that. I apologize for my insensitivity to the fact and matter, and I won't do that again. As you can imagine, here in the states we don't learn much about An Gorta Mór, I was once heard a phrase " History is written by the victors" or something to that effect, my interest in the it came from learning about the Batallion de San Patricios and why Mexico celebrates Saint Patrick's Day, luckily because of platforms like YouTube you can now get other perspectives on situations from all kinds of people. I like to look up history and read about it and I'll listen to history podcast and so on, I understand the British were a$$holes and perpetrated what we now call war crimes, just like the Ottomans did to their Armenian population, but no one called them out. Again, I apologize. Thank you for the lesson.
siriusmagnuss@reddit
Right?? Just casually making jokes about a genocide that were still recovering from.
i_am_un@reddit
Unlesssssss you think about it in the sense that before the famine, the Irish survived off of potatoes. No one brought up the famine, only that you can literally survive off of potatoes as an inexpensive meal. Y'all read too much in to that. The Irish Potato Famine lasted from about 1845-1852, it was caused by a foreign mold. It cause about 1 million deaths and forced another million and a half to emigrate to the USA, where they were quickly drafted in to the Union Army, where they were discriminated against, to fight against the Mexicans, some of them who empathized with the Mexicans, fellow Catholics and the underdog fighting oppression by a larger country switched sides and formed La Batallion De San Patricios led by Irishman John Riley. Also the reason it got so bad in Ireland was because the British kept exporting food and goods from Ireland during the blight and not importing any food because the Irish could not afford to buy it, so they pretty much hung them out to dry, with no food and no income a lot of farmers were evicted from their lands and thus left the country. Would you like to know about the colonies the Irish tried to set up in Mexico and South America from the 1600's to the early 1800's, before the famine?

reality is those cars are likely leases or horrific car loans they are stuck in. But imo, it doesn't excuse that person from 'sleeping in the bed they've made for themselves.' I don't feel bad for luxury vehicles because they've already consumed the benefits; now they reap the results.
laydibug2477@reddit
This does kind of sound on brand to what the lady with the luxury vehicle said.. the one who lost her job? I mean, she admitted she was saying hardheaded and snarky rich people comments before life smacked her in the face… so she probably wouldn’t have been one to help the old lady cross the road. I know what it’s like trying to survive without. You just pray and learn and make a way. Survival mode is an interesting and very, very hard place to be…. As far as OP goes, I guess at least they have a home. Economy is really sad…..
dwsinpdx@reddit
You don’t have to feel bad for them but I’m going to make damn sure their kids are being fed.
DazzlingManner9126@reddit
And the parents responsibility is what again? Oh yeah they have no responsibility to their kids and it’s fine for them to play keeping up with the jones instead of prioritizing their family.
dwsinpdx@reddit
Who fucking cares though.jYes maybe they fucked up but feed the children no question. Is that hard to understand
DazzlingManner9126@reddit
Maybe they should give up some of those fuck ups before looking for handouts
IndirectSarcasm@reddit
reality is they are in need now; but it's only because they spent resources frivolously for a very long time before that. we all choose the lives we have every day through small and large decisions. I can't feel bad for someone who makes choices that lead to bad outcomes. Same way I respect an extreme sports athletes decisions to this there lives. When someone dies by a series of thier own choices; we have to just step back and accept they are living the life they have led for themselves to this point
coherentpa@reddit
They can trade down their Mercedes and buy an older Toyota today by going to Carmax, walking out with cash in hand.
Instead, people spend $1000+/mo on their luxury vehicle and leave feeding their kids as an afterthought.

My area has plenty of charity they sometimes even send people here from Boston because we have more resources for people in need. You just need enough dedicated people. Most of the people I know that work for charity were one in low times and used it for a leg up. Now they're giving back to the community for a living.
i_am_un@reddit
If you volunteer at the food banks for a few hours, they usually put aside a few bags for you too. I found this out while I worked one during my community service hours.

I spent a year saving up a down payment to buy my first little place, and honestly I was working so much overtime to build up my savings again and to furnish the place, I ate poor for a bit by being both house poor and exhausted. I may have been sitting on the floor, but it was my floor!
My go-to was sriracha rice. Big bag of white rice and a 28oz bottle of sriracha could go far. I'd get chicken broth BOGO at the grocery story to cook the rice in for more flavor (or bouillon) and add a few squirts of sriracha into the boil before I lowered the heat to cook. Flavorful rice with just a bit of a kick.
If chicken breasts were BOGO, I'd stock up on those as well and keep some in the freezer. I was happy with the plain rice, but added chicken was always better.
An Italian ex had also taught me how to brine and season the shit out of pasta water. By dumping an indecent amount of Italian seasoning and kosher salt into a boiling pot to "steep" for ten minutes prior to adding pasta, the pasta gets super flavorful and is drained with just the right amount of seasoning still on the pasta. Just add margarine/butter, toss with Parmesan cheese, and it is sooo good.
Pancake mix is another good cheap staple. Usually cheap, again always BOGO sales, and it satisfies the need for sweets when perhaps real desserts are a luxury. Same with throwing chocolate chips into a jar of peanut butter for a big ol' tablespoon for a dessert.
It's been a decade, now I'm married so we have a two income household, AND my husband does almost all the cooking for us, but I have to say those are still probably my go-to comfort foods.
IrisSmartAss@reddit
Brown rice would give you a lot more nutrients. And flavor.
i_am_un@reddit
Chicken drumsticks are like .99¢ a pound where I live in California, I used to make it for my kids all the time, boiled in water for a few minutes then season and finish off in the oven until crispy, then use the broth for the rice.
Spaceman_fan@reddit
You own a house dude congrats on that. Chickpeas tossed and roasted in whatever oil with some paprika, cayenne (or whatever) but at least some salt and pepper might elevate a little for like 99 cents

My parents always warned me about this kind of situation. They told me that my mom's 1st cousin and his wife had a house built and then they were so house poor they had to eat hotdogs and Mac and cheese or tomato soup with water and grilled cheese for every meal. They said to never buy on the high end of your budget because as soon as taxes start increasing, you're even more screwed.
SewAlone@reddit
My mother taught me not to be house poor. Luckily we bought a starter home that we can afford on one income if one of us ever got laid off. Unfortunately, we are still in that starter home, but at least it’s a home. 🏠
Unipiggy@reddit
a little insulting to those of us who don't have any hopes of ever owning a home
iSavedtheGalaxy@reddit
The "starter homes" where I am are almost a million dollars.
Baelish2016@reddit
Yep. Back when I bought a house, I was approved for a mortgage that I felt was WAY too high. So I opted for a house about $70k cheaper.
Sure it’s smaller, and sure the yard is tiny; but when my rates went up I can still easily afford it AND have a savings.
I don’t understand people who go for their maximum approved mortgage, then get surprised when they can barely afford it after a few years.
sirmanleypower@reddit
Because in a lot of places that's how much any house costs now, any renting is just about as expensive.
Baelish2016@reddit
Let me rephrase it - I don’t know why anyone would go for the max, when they have affordable options that are under their approved amount.
Rockandmetal99@reddit
sounds like you made a bad decision and shouldn't have bought a house
Unfadable1@reddit
Agreed. They prob should have kept renting where it goes up $100-500/mo every year, in most cities in America. Maybe they should sell everything in order for afford moving and a security deposit.

Active-Goat-3001@reddit
I change my username every few months, but okay.
A quick Google search will tell you that Medicaid absolutely does cover mental health therapy. And you can even take it a step further and you can find therapists in your local area that take Medicaid. I don’t know why you are so insistent that we don’t but this is very, very easy for you to confirm for yourself.
doogles@reddit
Medicaid eligibility is very rigidly structured around the finances of the recipient, among other factors, and one can lose that eligibility if you rise above a certain level of income or assets.
Active-Goat-3001@reddit
And if you lose coverage therapists offer pro bono and sliding scale fees. Does not change the fact that Medicaid absolutely does cover mental health therapy.
doogles@reddit
Yeah, I know. I'm STILL not disputing that, at all. You're completely missing my stated point.
Hermanmeunsterchees@reddit
I have Medicaid because of a disability and no income. I had therapy therapy several times a month before. Down to once every 5 weeks now only cause I don’t need it as much.

thejustducky1@reddit
The financial decision-making skill of the average first-time homebuyer is abysmal -- people get stars in their eyes when they see house payments at the high end of what they could rent... but renting doesn't require upkeep or replacing your roof for 15 grand...........
As soon as an unexpected cost or multiple incidents happen 8 times in one year [like it did for us], owner = house-poor.
WharfRat426@reddit
They’re just fake accounts that rich, real estate managers put on here to persuade people to rent for the rest of their lives.
PartialDischage@reddit
This is such a ridiculous statement lmao. You know what raises the value of their properties? Convincing people that buying is always a better financial move than renting.
Being house poor is a real thing and in many markets, rent is so far below mortgage costs that buying a house is a terrible financial move. Rent and invest the difference.
WharfRat426@reddit
It’s not far below where I live. Mortgage payments are about the same as rent along most of South Carolina’s coast. Also property value isn’t what a landlord cares about. They aren’t flipping properties, they’re renting them.
chickalupe@reddit
Came here to say this! Also in SC, and we just signed on a mortgage for a 4 bedroom house that's $700 less a month than the 3 bedroom place we've been renting for the last few years!
notabigmelvillecrowd@reddit
The mortgage for my 4 bedroom house is less than the rent was for my 2 bed apartment in the same city! Very comparable in terms of building age and condition. Obviously there are more associated costs with the house, but straight mortgage to rent comparison is not even close.
PartialDischage@reddit
In most major metros renting is significantly cheaper than mortgage payments right now. And remember, mortgage payments are the minimum of what you will pay. Add in property taxes, insurance and maintenance.
And I can assure you many landlords just break even on the rent and expect the appreciation in home value to give them most of their actual returns.
WharfRat426@reddit
Do you believe housing is going to get any cheaper in the near future?
PartialDischage@reddit
It doesn't have to get cheaper for renting and investing to beat it.
WharfRat426@reddit
That depends on what you’re investing in and how long. Rent is also rising faster than salaries so goodluck.
PartialDischage@reddit
S&P 500 gains 10% on average. Rents are currently increasing at 2.6%. Wages are increasing at 3.5%.

Downtown_Brother6308@reddit
My landlord has put in probably 20k of plumbing and 5k of misc in the last 18 months. Factor in that the basic mortgage payments on my place would be 75% higher than my rent… I can see how bad timing can kick the ever living shit out of a new homeowner.

As a cautionary tale to other readers: Make a budget before you even go to a lender or start looking at houses. Determine how much money monthly you can comfortably spend on a house. The lender will generally pre-approve you for MUCH more. If you take out the max amount you will be house poor like OP, eating rice and beans or instant ramen in an empty house because you can't afford anything else.

Hey I barely can afford groceries too. Rice and beans need to be your staples they can keep you full for longer. If you eat red meat ground up some beef, get some seasonings. Fried rice is SUPER easy to make and you already have rice and peas. Walmart has a recipe option where you can see how much per serving is and add exactly what you need to your cart. Eventually you'll start stocking your pantry and freezer, take free stuff if people offer it. I've got canned salmon, I don't know how I'll use it but I know I will in a pinch. This isn't forever!
trapbuilder2@reddit
I fucking love rice and peas. Stick some butter in there while it's still hot and it's great

I know it sucks bro but at least you’re building equity. Most Americans are in your situation but they are throwing their money away with rent. It will get better just keep your chin up.
WeeBo-X@reddit
You need to get corn, I saw this one video where you can just wash off the poop after eating out and getting it out. You can just do that a few times. It'll go well with rice.

Edamame beans would go along with the rice better imo, you can get frozen bags of it called "Murikame" where it's just the beans taken out of the pods. High in fiber and I think protein - a little soy sauce, maybe chives and rice vinegar, and it's a much tastier, filling meal while still being very cheap. It's saved me .ore than a few times lol

A discount pack of chicken, biscuits, and cream of chicken can be very cheap and last almost all week. Chicken and dumplings. I’m happy for you for your new home! I’m sad to see your creativity go down the drain lol. There are tons of ways to eat cheap and not have to stick to one thing. I think people eat the same thing over and over bc they don’t like to cook? A can of tuna and a boxed tuna pasta would cost you $5 or less and would feed you for a couple days. Eggs aren’t as cheap as they used to be! But get and 18 pack and have two each morning? Bag of apples on sale $2-3. Peanut Butter goes a long way. Sandwich or celery, etc… just some off-the-top suggestions.

Sacrifice the peas and get seasoning
dreamyduskywing@reddit
Buy black beans, an onion, some budget taco seasoning, large flour tortillas, salsa, and cheese. You can get these cheap at Aldi. Sauté the onions til soft, then add drained beans and a half teaspoon of taco seasoning. Add a little water and let it simmer until the water is mostly cooked away. On a tortilla, layer one half with shredded cheese, black bean mixture, then shredded cheese again. Fold over the tortilla into a semi-circle and transfer to a slightly oiled pan. Cook it on medium just enough so that the cheese is melted and the tortilla is a little brown. Top with salsa. Or you could use the same technique except roll it into a burrito and fill with beans and rice. Either way, you can eat better than rice and peas.

Stir fry it. Tastes way better! (Let the rice rest for a day though trust me) Also Google a little for things you can throw together for cheap. You have more options! Food banks are also a great resource. No shame in that. Besides pride is selfish not noble. I'd recommend lentils for protein they're cheap in large quantities. Remember to use salt as you will need the iodine. And soak the lentils overnight to make them easier to digest (No fart factory)

Did you lie on the loan application? Pretty sure banks don't give loans if your budget is that tight
accidentalscientist_@reddit
I didn’t lie on my application but I got approved for up to $400k on my income alone. We bought at $210k. The mortgage payment with property taxes and insurance is $2000 per month, which is doable between the both of us. But I cannot imagine being able to afford even the $2k on my own (a little over 50% of my take home pay) let alone the payment on a $400k house that the bank thought I could afford.
A big part of it is that right after we bought, home value was reassessed and property tax went up a lot. So the escrow payment went up a lot to match it.

I’n the beginning he made around 50-100 dollars Per month, now he makes up to 2000 almost solely on gifts. It could also be old fashioned labour like cutting grass or doing yardwork for people. -Or buy a hanging bar and go out in the night life and charge 10 dollars Per hang, if they hang more than 2 minutes they get 100 dollars. I see people on TikTok make a fortune on that bc they also send live during. Only the imagination is the limit :)

Its almost summer, grow some veggies in your new yard and seasonings. Depending on where you live certain seasonings are perennials and so you will only have to plant once. My sage, rosemary, lavender, and oregano are huge and don't stop. Tomatoes are easy are highly productive, so are peppers. There's free seed trades and plant swaps around just look for them. If you can find a cheaper used deep freezer you can store everything you've grown, and check out local food pantries. You've got this!

At the point of deciding on how many years to finance it over she was waffling between 2 options that basically had a $100 a month difference cost between them.
The man stopped and said “look. If $100 a month is causing this much stress you can’t afford this car!” Then he told her to leave and think about it and aim for a less expensive car.
I think about this a lot! That man forewent a sale to keep my friend from getting herself into a bad financial situation. And he was correct to do so!

Spices last virtually forever and a little goes a long way for bland food.
Tofu is pretty cheap in a lot of areas for protein. Tear it into pieces and bake with a bit of oil and spices (more surface area so it gets crispier). Otherwise beans or lentils work well.
Pasta or noodles is another good option. Bake or fry some veggies, blend them into a sauce and just toss it all together.
Hell, get the cheapest tuna you can find and much a bunch of tuna salad with some mayo and finely cut veggies.
Cowboy cavier is another good, easy one that can last you a while. Just look into cheap, easy meals, you don't have to suffer like that.
I'd recommend getting an immersion blender, you can get cheap ones and they're useful for a lot of things and easy to pack away.

What about 50¢ ramen?
Kir4_@reddit
I'd do red canned beans and some vegetables. Usually here onion and some frozen stuff isn't very expensive.
There's also frozen veggies for soups which you can make like almost 2 litres of soup with 300-400 ml servings. Also goes hard with toast bread from the oven or pan that you cut into little squares and season with spices.
My got to herbs/spices is garlic, sweet paprika and provence herbs.
I also get dried soy patties that go for less than a dollar here (converted from local) for 100g and they're like 50% protein. You soak them in water and can fry them like that or add to the soup. (chopped or blend later)
All goes good with the soup or rice.
Buckwheat is also nice but that's if you could get eggs, with veggies I prefer rice but could be good to switch things up once in a while.
Peas aren't bad but my go to is beans. Beans also have iron / potassium / calcium which is good I think I'd you don't eat meat. Switching once in a while would probably be good.

Lentil and chickpea curry might also be a good cheap food to look into. Lentils and beans are a great cheap shelf stable food. You can make some great crunchy spiced chickpeas by roasting them in the oven with some spices, and it makes a great topper for things like this.
