My husband has been driving for 30years , 58 now and so wants to change to regular work day . No more dawn starts or lost weekends etc. Anyone advise on a job that the experience he has from it, self management, data control, problem solving etc will help. Have you a mate who has swapped to something else?

How i got out of trucking is i applied State government, maintenance division.
He can try his local, county, or state because almost all require a cdl. 8 hours a day, 1 hour lunch, focus on safety, never working very hard. Mon- Fri. Pay is never late. PTO, vacation. Highly recommend

Oh I see. If might still apply. If not, dispatch or safety is usually filled with an older driver

I’m a dispatcher now

worked with few guys who made that jump and it's pretty solid transition. my cousin went from 25 years on road to dispatch at smaller logistics company and he loves having the regular schedule now. the problem-solving skills transfer really well since you already know what drivers deal with in the field. plus all that route knowledge and understanding of regulations makes you way more effective than someone coming in cold. he started bit lower salary than what he was making with good miles, but after couple years and some overtime during busy seasons he's doing better financially. only downside he mentions is sometimes feeling bit disconnected from actually being out there, but the home time every night makes it worth it for him and his family.

I’m on my third attempt to leave the industry, trying to become an engineer for a local commuter rail.

lot of older drivers i know moved into dispatch or planner stuff or yard shunter gigs, bit easier on the body but same brain skills, also warehouse supervisor or trainer. finding anything decent now is a grind, everything’s snapped up and pay sucks for new folks
