You do realize that Gen-X is gonna end up being 'Source' in retirement right?

If the current AI trajectory holds even close, we'll all be working our retirement away in Costa Rica spending our days patching history for large language models.
Host: "Was it in fact 'fire' and 'a once in a lifetime event' to attend the theater screening of Terminator 2.
Gen-X: It was in fact fire. Next question.
Karate_Lauren@reddit
Using ‘fire’ is definetly not GenX!

I’m not feeding AI shit. It won’t last the decade. It’s all a facade.
datbackup@reddit
you’re feeding ai by posting on reddit tho
Not to mention making reddit money since they couldn’t get advertisers without us all writing comments to drive traffic
Which we do for free
AI is not going anywhere and thinking otherwise is cope
azger@reddit
Fire is a word Gen Z used not Gen X. At least to my addled gen x brain. To many times drinking from the hose or being snuck into music venues underaged I guess.
False-Storm-5794@reddit
I don't remember, "fire," being used the way, "radical, man!" was used.

Pretty sure 'Fire' isn't that strongly attached to a single age group. Used more by Gen-Z? Yes. But it's not like you don't get it.

We already are.

Yeah, in my experience so far. AI is great for someone that knows what they are doing and know proper software design. It still get a lot of things wrong but I don't have to hand write code anymore which is nice.

I'm cool with that as long as we get Costa Rica beach time as well.

No Gen X ever said fire like that
FKpasswords@reddit
We said it like Beavis and Butthead. Then we set sht on FIRE !!
Sintered_Monkey@reddit
Except when playing Battleship.
SpatulaPlayer2018@reddit
Incorrect. Millennials are the last generation to remember a pre internet world. Gen X doesn’t say“fire” in this context. Terminator 2 was released in 1991, hardly a a definitive Gen-x movie.
This reads like lazy AI slop.

You do realize that we are about to be the boomers.
WinninRoam@reddit
It's generational slang, not an age category. The term "boomers" doesn't mean "old people".
MWoolf71@reddit
You do know that the oldest Boomers are turning 80 this year, right?
Sig-vicous@reddit
Not certain of your point. But to clarify...
Boomers are currently old, sure. But boomers were also boomers when they were 20 and 30 years old, 50 or so years ago. The relationship to age is only just timing.
You don't get old then become a boomer, a boomer was a boomer their entire life. A boomer has nothing at all to do with age. It has everything to do with what year you were born.
A millennial will be a millennial their entire life. They don't become boomers either. A gen x is a gen x for life, from the time they were born until they're old and decrepit and finally die. They'll never be boomers either.
A lot of people seem to think Boomer means old person. It does not. That's only because they're mistaken.
That misunderstanding seems to be due to timing only...the rise of social media, coincidentally with the simultaneous generational battle of millennial vs Boomer.
The battle is always going to be young vs old, and those labels of generations will constantly change. We are rounding the bend to where the phrase "OK, boomer" no longer applies.
MWoolf71@reddit
My Boomer siblings (my parents were Silent Gen) have always been older than me. Therefore I have only ever experienced them as older.
coopnjaxdad@reddit
Some of us are 100% Boomers, in the worst ways, regardless of the above and it is shit.

Comfortably_FlyGuy@reddit
Silent gen parents here.
Sig-vicous@reddit
That's not how it works.
Crown_Jew@reddit
I hope you’re right but i fear we are about to be at best marginally less out of touch than our parents.
Sig-vicous@reddit
I'm not saying we will or won't be like that. We might be less, more, or similarly out of touch. But we'll never be a boomer. Nothing can make us a boomer.
A boomer is defined as a generation of people born withing a specific time range. And there can be certain characteristics, like the one you mention, generically applied to that generation as a whole.
And that will likely happen to us. We'll be classified as having certain common traits as we become seniors. But any new traits will be freshly applied to "gen x-ers", for us to own.
We don't inherit the boomers' name. The boomers will cease to exist. And then we'll be gen x-ers until we die.

memeticmagician@reddit
Yeah I was born in 1984 so I remember pre internet. Maybe the lead is the reason why OP thinks this?
ghjm@reddit
Strictly speaking, you don't. The Internet began on January 1, 1983, when ARPANet adopted TCP/IP as the internetworking standard.
This may seem trivial, but I spent my student years on the pre-WWW Internet, participating in Usenet, IRC and so on, and I always feel like the younger generations just sort of skip over this and go from cavemen hitting rocks straight to graphical browsers in 1994. I was playing IRC Jeopardy over the Internet in the late 80s, and I have good memories of this and don't like to see this era erased.
warriorforGod@reddit
I have loved IRC forever, and still use it.

Balrog71@reddit
Oh don’t worry we’re all gonna die
musing_codger@reddit
I don't understand this. Are you saying that you think AI will be a huge failure and the economy will go into recession as the market corrects for overinvestment?
Or are you saying that AI will be extremely successful and radically reduce the need for labor, dramatically reducing the cost of living and making society much richer?
scienceprodigy@reddit
If everyone was rich imagine trying to find a house in a place you’d actually want to live. The competition would be enormous. I’m not sure that idea works
musing_codger@reddit
Rich is a relative term. Today, virtually everyone is unimaginably rich by the standards of 200 years go.
If AI works as well as some Redditors keep imaging (the oh, no, it's going to take all of our jobs crowd), it won't make land more available, but it will gut the cost of labor, so everything labor intensive will collapse in price. Ironically, things that aren't labor intensive can actually increase in price relative to income because people will be spending less on the labor intensive stuff.
Personally, I don't think it is proving to be nearly as effective as people keep pretending. It's a very useful tool, similar to how the internet, PCs, and spreadsheets, and robots have proven to be very useful tools. But I don't see it wiping out many jobs in the long run.

Wintermutellm@reddit (OP)

I think all generations are far underestimated how many jobs are going to be lost due to AI over the upcoming years. More people competing for far fewer jobs is going to cause a lot of societal disruption. And all bets are off for what people have planned for.
