Do you remember your first legal drink?

People talking about getting Long Island Ice Teas for their 21st birthday on the Long Island Ice Tea thread got me thinking:
Do you remember your first legal drink?
My 21st birthday was on a Sunday and the liquor stores were closed. At midnight on Saturday night I went to this basement bar where they checked ids at the door.
The doorman said happy birthday.
I got one pint of Welsh Ale and then went home. I made a point of not wanting to overdo it on my 21st Birthday. Next weekend things went a little differently.

Never had one. Got sent to rehab at 17 years old.
Been sober ever since.

Held off for so long because my friends drank. Made it to 16 to impress a girl.

Yes, Black Angus restaurant for my 21st BD...I had a glass of Chardonnay!
Playful_Ad9949@reddit
I went to Gwar. Skated there, stopping at a liquor store on the way. Wasn’t carded…
marslp@reddit
I went out with my parents before I met my friends. My dad told everyone at the bar that it was my 21st and that I was having my “first beer” with them. He acted like he totally believed it was the truth 😂

Margarita at the local Chi Chi’s. I miss them.

1993 tasting flight of beer in a pub in Portland Oregon. I was 24, didn't drink until grad school.

Dave & Busters on my 21st.
My classmates took me out around 1:00p. D&B was across the parking lot from school. Got too 💩faced that I had to call off work.

My 21st was on a Wednesday. We went to the only bar still open in my one horse town and it was quarter beer night. Walked in right at last call. Got 50¢ worth of less than stellar beer and went home.
Higgsy45@reddit
Yes 18th Birthday. Local pub about 3 miles from home. Ended up getting scanked by mates and walking home drunk as I had no money for taxi.
Physical_Ad5135@reddit
It was Long Island ice tea! Got it free at a college bar.

I actually turned "legal" twice. It was when NY was raising their drinking age from 18 to 21. They first raised the age to 19 (I was 17 at the time), so I celebrated my 19th birthday with a Melon Ball. Then, 14 months after my birthday, it was raised to 21. So, for 10 months, I wasn't technically of legal age. I believe it was a Rum & Coke I had for the 2nd "legal" drink.
Good thing I looked older than I was when I was younger because I never got carded.
NYCphilliesBlunt@reddit
Me too! Wasn’t that hilarious? Did you have to negotiate with your door people and bartenders? I was like “C’mon, I’ve been coming here since I was 13 and I’ve never caused a problem.”
azchocolatelover@reddit
😆. The bartenders and door people never gave me a second look. I've been asked for ID one time in my life, and that was when I was in my early 30s. I almost hugged that Publix cashier when she apologized for asking for my ID but she just wasn't sure I was over 21...

TheCheshireCody@reddit
I don't remember what the drink was (probably a shitty beer), but I had it in a bar/dance club I'd been going to for years. My friend took me to our usual bartender and told him, he gave me a "naughty naughty" look and gave it to me for free.
nfssmith@reddit
Not specifically the one but I know I had many on my 19th birthday which would be my first day legally able to drink…
Silver_fish1978@reddit
My first beer was Coors Light, and my first drink was a Kamikzie
GenXrules69@reddit
Remember both. 18th then was not legal a few weeks later. And 21st when I was legal again.

Went to the liquor store on my 21st birthday and didn’t even get carded. Had it ready to show them. Made me wonder how long I could have been buying?
Rooster_Ties@reddit
On a college choir ‘tour’ over spring break, and my 21st birthday happened to fall on a Sunday. College I went to wasn’t religious, but lots of choral repertoire is (throughout history), and we often sang our full program in churches (with some religious material, and plenty of secular too).
But that Sunday we sang in an actual church service — and then we drove four hours in our bus, and sang in ANOTHER church vespers service around 5pm.
So by the time we had dinner — thankfully in a restaurant with a bar — It was only THEN that I had my first legal drink — a whisky sour, iirc.
Kodiak01@reddit
Was drinking for so many years before I was legal, I couldn't even begin to recall my first actual one at a bar.
Ok-Huckleberry-6326@reddit
I was on my way to New Orleans with friends for spring break, we drove & stayed in campgrounds + crap motels on the way down. It was my 21st bday mid-trip so the boys got me a 40 of Milwaukee's Best and made me chug it.
shay2791@reddit
Sloe gin fizz. My father bought 2 for me at the dinner theater 2 weeks after my birthday.
DonnyDiddledIvanka@reddit
I was a junior in college(Oct) when I turned 21. Most of my friends were under 21 still and the underage bar in town got busted that week and started enforcing checking for real ids(not fakes). I had been drinking so much before my birthday and then spent that night drinking with friends in my room. Technically those were 'legal' but just didn't feel different. That was a Saturday night so probably drank at an establishment a week or 2 later which would probably be considered my first legal drink but I certainly do not remember it specifically.
BMisterGenX@reddit (OP)
Where I went to college my freshman year there were two bars in walking distance of campus. One checked ids and the other didn't. But the one that didn't had one night a week when drafts were half off and then they checked ids at the door

AllieJIsHere@reddit
This was in the mid nineties. I got a rum and coke for my first legal drink at a dive bar.
I had many many drinks before that legal one though.
Bahlore@reddit
So I had a few "Legal" Drinks before I was 21. I was in Germany when I was 15, and we had a beer in the Hoffbrauhause in Munic. Then I joined the Army at 18, and they sent me to Korea where they said I could "only" buy 2 cases of beer or 2 fifths of alcohol a month ON post but could buy as much off post as I wanted; so Jungle Juice and OB it was! By the time I turned 21 I was in Tennessee; and Madog 20/20 was cheap as hell (reasons for that) and I cannot or will not ever drink that again, the smell of it makes me gag.
Tasty_Heron_7219@reddit
Mine was on my 21st bday in 1987. It was a Wednesday and I was working in Hells Kitchen during the day and had a staff meeting in the South Bronx that evening. I convinced my coworker to take the time to stop in the bar of the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Times Square before grabbing the subway there. This was before they “cleaned up” Times Square and the place was seedy as hell. I ordered a screwdriver because it was the only drink I really knew (I didn’t like beer). My coworker who was several years younger than me also ordered a drink. They didn’t card either of us so it was anticlimactic for me. We only stayed for a little while because we had to get to the meeting. I don’t think I finished the drink.
bandley3@reddit
At 1155 PM on the night before my birthday I walked into a convenience store and snagged a big bottle (40?) of Miller High Life. I got to the register right after midnight and set my beer on the counter. The plan was to have my ID checked, the clerk look at the clock to verify my age, and then having him sell me the beer. Instead, for the first, I wasn’t carded. I went home, drank my beer by the trash can, went inside and went to bed.
sandsonik@reddit
No, but I'd been drinking for a few years already. Probably a Budweiser.

My friend took me to the Liquor Barn after class. We bought cupcakes and champagne and drank it at the park.

Can't remember. Back in my day, legal age was 18. We had been drinking in bars since we we 16; some maybe 15.

My brother and his family had an exchange student at the time and I happened to tag along on a day trip to NYC on my 21st birthday.

I was a senior in high school still when I had my first legal drink. I remember it didn't taste as good being legal.
Good_Oil2942@reddit
My first legal drink was in 1991 at midnight - the very start of my 21st birthday. I was one of those dopes that started drinking years earlier in my teens, so this wasn't exactly a moment for me. I was already sitting at a bar I had frequented for months prior, our older friend had been the bartender there for a few years. I was four or five beers in at that point, but when the clock struck 12, I was served a "Prairie Fire", which was a shot of cheap tequila with 2 dashes of tabasco sauce. My friends wryly sang happy birthday to me and I drank the shot. It was gross and it was right about then that I started to think I should stop drinking.

I’m from San Diego, CA so my first legal drink was in Tijuana at age 18. Which was a beer Dos Equis.

I drove from Chicago to Phoenix for my 21st. Went to a college bar, and they gave me a free shot and a beer. Don't remember what either of them was. Also, don't remember much else of that afternoon/night, either. I do remember a bar where all the drinks were served out of slurpee machines. 🤣
chefybpoodling@reddit
This makes me laugh. All the great places for a first legal drink in Chicago, top of the Hancock bldg or the green mill and you drove to Az to hit up mill Ave. I hope your birthday was in the winter so you got great weather too. I have drank in all the places mentioned, so no shade.
Never_Dave_1@reddit
Nope, July. It was 110 every day I was there. 🤣 I loved it. I drove down there to see a girl I had been dating, who had moved to her mom's place in Chandler when her dad took a job in Europe. The relationship didn't work out, but the trip was still worth it. Hiking in Sedona and Payson, watching 4th of July fireworks from on top of Camelback, driving my Mustang way too fast on mountain roads. Good times.
willfully_slow@reddit
Legal age is 18 here. I bought apple wine for me and a friend. It tasted terrible. It did not taste any better when it came up.

College bar, where they gave you a box to puke in on your 21st. 21st was an event everyone came out to buy you shots. First shot was a prairie fire, tequila Tabasco sauce and pepper, which was not fun. Next was a cement mixer to stop the burn. did 21+ shots that night. Don't remember them all but someone wrote them on a napkin for me.

My B-Day was on Sunday. Friends and I went to a bar at midnight. My first drink was a prairie fire, a shot of tequila with horseradish and tobacco. Friends suck some time.

Probably Baileys at christmas some time when I was a kid, maybe 6ish?
Depends what you mean by "legal", I guess. Other options are out with my folks for dinner in my early teens or the first time I bought my own beer at 18.
Not easy to answer!
Len_Zefflin@reddit
First LEGAL drink was in 1984. My high school aftergrad party was on my birthday.
First drink period, I don't remember but it probably would have been a rum & coke around age 7.
LightOtter@reddit
My first ever drink was at age 23. I have no idea what I drank because it was something the bartender threw together. I told the bartender that it was my first drink and asked him to reccommend something. It tasted like lemonade. That was the day I discovered that I hate the taste of alcohol. No matter what I mix together, I can't disguise the taste. Might as well not waste the money.
mrsmobin@reddit
Fuck yeah! Went for power hour it was a vodka martini with Absolut Citron made by bartender/homey, Matt.
Celebrated at a local bar with a dozen friends who all bought me drinks. It was a blast.

Drambuie.
My dad took me to the local bar a few blocks from my parents' house, and one of his friends immediately offered me a drink. I said I'd have what he was having. So, the bartender handed me a small glass, and I assumed it was a shot.
Dad's friend thought that was pretty cool, and offered me another. And another.
I was too drunk to walk. And that was challenging. Because I needed to get back to my parents' house, where my grandparents were waiting to say "happy birthday".
Medium-Mission5072@reddit
My mom made Pina Coladas for my 21st. Why Pina Coladas? She only had rum and Pina Colada mix left over from a recent family event in the liquor cabinet, and my stepdad wouldn’t let me have any beers because “you’re not old enough”, and “you’re not drinking any of my beers. You’ve got a job, you can buy your own” (he’s an asshole).
The Pina Coladas were mighty good, and it was also the only time I saw my now wife drink (she had open heart surgery later that year and can’t drink with the medications she’s on).
Grobbekee@reddit
The legal age at the time was 16. However I didn't try a beer before 20. It was the last day of school and it was the only thing they had at the party besides tapwater from the toilet sink. The beer tasted gross to me. So bitter.

I don't remember what it was (beer, I'm sure), but I remember the situation. Was in college but "between homes" - so it was very anti-climactic.

Not at all. I started university at 17, and was regularly enjoying the odd beverage in the student bar before I turned 18 (legal drinking age in Ireland) in the March. So it wasn’t a big deal turning 18.
Fun fact - the barmen in the student bar would ask to see your student card, but that just proved you were a student, it didn’t have your date of birth. The year after me, they changed the student cards so that if you were under 18, the card had a red line down the side to deter underage drinking. You could get a new card from the Student Union once you turned 18.

Beer. In The Netherlands it was allowed to drink beer and other light alcoholic drinks at 16 in the 80’s.

The day I turned 21 I went to the local bar. Bartender said I hate to ask you but we have inspectors here today and I need your ID. I said Nick I hate to tell you but I turned 21 today as I handed him my ID.
Consistent-Tie-4394@reddit
Yeah, similar story for me.
My friends and I were semi-regulars at a local bar where we'd shoot pool and drink beer. I was the youngest of the group, and we were there until after midnight, rolling into the early hours of my 21st birthday.
At 12:01, one of my friends told the bartender he'd better check my ID. He replied something to the effect if, "Nah, you guys are akways in here." My friend insisted, and when I handed over my ID, he gave us a blast of fake outrage... then gave me an Old Fashioned on the house as a birthday present.
WeirdWritings1989@reddit
Nice…but then again it was easier back then when no body really gave a crap. I was drinking in bars since I was 14. Back then I’d go with coworker to the bar next door. Never got questioned at all.
Migamix@reddit
18 was the drinking age in new Orleans, I had already been in bars since 17, in fact, the owner knew I was under age, and on my 18the best he called my landline and offered me a DJ gig since I was legal. I was already doing DJ backup stuff just not officially. But I was paid in booze back then.

I was meeting the movers to move to the other side of the state the day after my 21st birthday and it was mid week so I didn't have any friends available to go drinking with. When I turned 18, I lived in a province where the drinking age was 19, but we lived very close to a province where you could drink at 18. So dad drove me over the 'border' to buy me my first legal drink. Seedy little dive bar, but it was the closest. I had a rum and coke, he had a beer, finished up and immediately turned around and drove home. Didn't even get carded, lol. Kinda wild given how baby-faced I was, but I actually drank 'illegally' in bars and never got carded until the eve of my 19th. I'm pretty sure one of my 'buddies' thought it would be funny to rat me out to the bouncers, because I'd been there many times before and they'd never even looked twice at me. Funny now, less funny then.

It was 5 am and I didnt even want it but I felt compelled to order a drink so I asked the flight attendant working the bev cart for a jack Daniel's. She was too tired herself to even care about identification and just handed me the mini bottle and a cup and moved on. I poured it into the cup and just stared at it for the rest of the flight. Among the other shots I had that night were a Brain Hemorrhage (I think vodka, Bailey's, and grenadine), a Gorilla Fart (I think Wild Turkey and something else), a Prairie Dog (same as Prairie Fire, but not lit and drunk like a normal shot), and World Peace Punch (Jack Daniels, Smirnoff, and Midori).
That was the first three bars. I don't remember much else after that.

Sadly yes, my mom took me out to dinner on my 18th (legal age at the time) and let me order a beer. Then her, her boyfriend and an aunt and uncle went on a rant of how I'd end up an alcoholic like everyone on my dad's side of the family. They all got sloshed on cheap wine and I ended up having to drive because I'd just had 1 glass of beer vs their 2 bottles of wine. Got home to my dad and he asked how was my first legal drink and I told him what happened. He then took me out to the local dive bar, ordered a pitcher and we played pool till closing. So I have fonder memories of my second legal drink, which happened 4 hours after my first.

I'm sure it was a rum and coke.

The year was 1990. I drank B52 shots at the Grawood bar, Dalhousie University on my 19th birthday (legal age here).
It was a Thursday. My boyfriend and his friends took me to get my “liquor ID” after class. Back then you had a separate government photo ID for buying alcohol. After that we went to the Grawood. I finished the night off with a shot of sambuca. My dad came to pick me up. My bf pushed me into the car and then hightailed it out of there before my dad could give him shit over how drunk I was. My dads only words during that drive home were “you smell like a distillery”
The next morning I was too hungover to go to class (English 1000 was the only class I had on Fridays). I crawled out of bed and yakked my guts up. My dad asked me why I didn’t go to class (it was obvious) and then picked up fish and chips for lunch. I wanted to die.
I can’t believe I remember every detail of that experience 36 years ago yet I can’t remember what I ate for breakfast this morning.

I love the fact that I also had drinks at the Dalhousie Grawood for my 19th birthday - but in '93. But I got messy drunk at Alfredo Weinstein and Ho's lol
A couple of years later, my friends and I had an intense study session and we went to Hogie's on Quinpool Rd. We decided to drink all the cocktails on the menu (as a group, not each) I was so drunk I opened a closet door thinking it was a bathroom, and boxes fell out over me. I was also too sick to write the exam the next day.
I suspect we would have had fun together!

I had already been a nightclub dj for 3 years when I turned 21. The last place I wanted to go on my birthday was to the bars but I got dragged out by friends anyway. Pounded 3 shots, then threw an air hockey paddle at someone I was playing with right in front of a bouncer so I knew he'd escort me to the door. Walked home, got shitfaced alone, fell down a flight of stairs while talking on the phone with my girlfriend all the way down the stairs. At some point, I puked in my brand new pair of Doc Martens.
Tada!

I do not. By the time I was 21 I had years of drinking, smoking cigarettes and weed, and doing meth under my sleeve and I had been clean for over a year. Legal, 18th birthday. It was a lot of shots, like 25+... Sambuca, upside down margaritas, sex on the beach... But most were sambuca.
I had already been going to the bars since I was 17 and drinking off and on since I was about 12. I was already quite a regular, one night a super cute server brought me a whole platter of sambuca on the house, about 40 shots, did about 4 with me and left me with the rest! Jesus that was crazy.

I remember the most popular alcohol beverages sold in the mid to late 80's were the wine coolers. They were almost as popular as beer.Seagram's,California cooler. They are alot less popular now, then the were back in those days.
GozerDestructor@reddit
that was my first! I drank only on rare occasions before I was 21 (never had a fake ID, didn't have a lot of friends to hook me up), and I remembered these as being easy to drink when my parents had occasionally let me have a small amount as a teen.
Bartels and Jaymes, probably, because I liked their commercials (and didn't realize at the time that they used professional actors, not their actual corporate executives...)
DoughnutConstant5390@reddit
I tried them when I was under 21 as well. They were tasty as a young kid drinking them, but now almost 40 years later as an adult,It would be hard to still drink them anymore, because they are loaded with alot of extra sugar added to them to make them taste good.
Miniscule_Platypus@reddit
Oh, they were DEFINITELY marketed to the teen demographic. Drank a 4 pack all by myself when I was 16 in like an hour because they were sweet and tasted good, puked all over my friend’s sister’s apartment and I don’t think I ever drank another wine cooler again.

Yes! Had been drinking legally in Australia for a couple weeks, then the actual day was in the Philippines- my younger sister went to the hotel bar to get me a special drink, and the bartender got her something along the lines of a grasshopper, NOT what I was used to drinking in 1990, but it was sweet she remembered. Tasty_Context5263@reddit
I remember my first illegal drink.
I was home alone in our apartment. My mom was out of town, I was in college, 20 years old, and curious about the wine coolers in the fridge. I drank several, laid on the floor in the hallway listening to the TV with our wiener dog looking at me worriedly. Took a little sleep right there while thinking, "This is ok."
I woke up sicker than I had ever been in my life (and that is pretty sick). I barfed for three days straight and could only crawl to the door to let our pup out to quickly pee. That adorable angel just stepped outside the door, did his business, and came back in. He normally was a runner and had to be leashed, but he took mercy on me and clearly recognized my desperation, as well as my inability to be upright.
I occasionally will have a drink on a holiday, but I have never, ever gotten drunk again. It traumatized me more than the Hunting Debacle of 1979.

Drinking beer as an American youth in Germany at 16 - 1982.
No one in my family drank beer, so it was not something I’d been around very much at all. I had seen and smelled beer, maybe even sipped some from a rogue cup of Budweiser at some event, but thought it was stinky and terrible.
My parents sent me to Hamburg, Germany for a month to stay with my mother’s friends. Their daughter and her BF took me out at night on a few occasion and I was allowed to drink beer. The first was some light lager and I did not care for it, then I had a something a little darker and bolder and while it was still not quite my thing, it was much better than the light lager. That was the foundation for my experimenting with beer and learning that beer was not just “one thing” but that there were many different types.
I am now a certified beer snob.

You could still buy at “some” posts in the mid1990s at 18 while the rest of the country was 21. I was stationed at Ft Huachuca, AZ (one of the few you could buy/drink on post at 18) in 1995. I was 21 already, but watching the kids drink was amusing. I have no clue if that same rule applies today.

I turned legal drinking age twice. My freshman year of college the drinking age in NY state was 19, I was the first person in my dorm to turn 19 (November birthday) so someone drove me to the beer distributor to buy five cases of Old Milwaukee (our beer of choice driven primarily because it was cheap). So a bottle of Old Swill was my first legal drink. NY raised the drinking age to 21 during my sophomore year (with no grandfather clause) so I became legal to drink (again) my junior year. No idea what my first drink was that time although probably Old Milwaukee again.

Yes. On my 21st birthday I walked to the corner store by my boyfriend’s apartment (where I shopped a lot) and bought a bottle of wine. My bestie and I went to the neighborhood pub we'd been frequenting for a couple of years already. For some reason she -- a couple months younger than me! -- decided to tell the bartender, who knew us, that it was my 21st birthday. There were no consequences, she did not get carded (she was the reason we never got carded in the first place, she had a much more mature look than I did) and my rum & coke was free.

My ex threw me a party at her place in college and invited all my buddies over and had likely both beer and hard liquor. If I had to guess, probably Cuevo and Skyy. Had a major midterm, the day after my midweek, 21st. Went to most popular club in town that would get all fake IDs, got in @ midnight, had one drink, some silly shot, it was free for me, but my friends all had to pay for theirs. Stayed for a while then all went home well before last call. Didn't have another drink on my birthday.
Went out the weekend after, drank much more, remember that night well at the same club. Roommate was drinking atomic long Island ice teas (basically a pint of liquor with some ice), had like six, and about died of alcohol poisoning. I was drinking beer. Sobered up real quick keeping him alive all night. Should have called 911 but none of us had insurance and he would be almost as bad off as being dead if he got in an ambulance.
We had a pact on what to do if someone had to go to the hospital. I had car insurance but no car, insurance was dirt cheap. Covered me for bike crashes on public roads. If I broke a leg or got concussed playing sports, MTB, or walking around, they were to toss me and a bike in the street, call 911, and walk away. Never had to do that myself, but we did ride a friend clear across town with a broken collar bone because he didn't think he was covered for the ambulance ride.

I stopped in at the Class 6 on base (the liquor store). To even shop there, you have to have a military ID, so as long as they see it, that's fine.
So, I walked up and set the six pack of Budweiser and a 4 pack of Bacardi Breezers on the counter and held up my ID, my grin as big as all of outdoors. In monotone, he said: "Thank you, your total is [whatever]."
Still grinning I said, "No! LOOK!"
Then in monotone again, he said: "Happy Birthday, your total is [whatever]."
So, Bacardi breezers. I don't remember which flavor.

My first legal drink was the day after my 21st birthday. I had a sort of FWB relationship with a server at a local hotspot, so I had already been going there for a year or more without being carded. When I showed the bartender my ID, he thought it was pretty funny. He gave me a 32 ounce pitcher full of some concoction that I can only describe as a Long Island iced tea on steroids. He called it a “zombie shark bite”. I had to give him my keys in exchange for the free drink. Seemed fair to me.
So I wake up the next morning in my bed, introduce myself to the girl I’m with (who it turned out I went to high school school with), and see my motorcycle in the driveway. A couple of days later I’m back in the club and talking to the bartender and I asked him why he let me drive. He swore that I didn’t stammer, stutter, slur, sway, or any other indication of being intoxicated. I apparently told him I gave the drink away, but I don’t remember any of that.
Some of the best times I ever had I wasn’t even there.

We had 3.2% beer in Colorado when I was 18. Probably wasn’t my first legal drink but there was a club called Pogo’s that 18-21 year olds could drink weak beer at. I vividly remember my first drink in a bar. Wyoming had 19 drinking age and one time we drove across the state line after all of our crew was 19. Like dummies, we went into the first bar we saw. It was full of working men like oil roughnecks, ranch hands, truckers, tough grown men who did hard work. We were these college kids from Boulder. It was pretty intimidating to be honest. I walked up to the bar and ordered a whiskey sour.

But my first legal drink was in my first year of uni. I went back home to party with friends for the weekend and my mum rented a mini bus to take us to Tequila Willies for dinner. It turned into a dance club after 9. She bought all my drinks. Double tequila shots and corona chasers all night.

I was grandfathered in by the state when the drinking age went to 21 in 1985. In my 21st, I did celebrate my 21st by drinking whisky sours.

Yep! It was a Bellini fishbowl at a restaurant with my parents.

I’m Danish and when we grew up, legal drinking in bars was 18, however there was no age limit on buying alcohol- or cigarettes for that matter - in shops and supermarkets. So we started drinking and smoking at 13-14. It was completely normal and while some had to hide the smoking from their parents, basically everyone were allowed to drink. It’s so crazy to think about now. We partied every single weekend. I specifically remember a party when we were 16, where my best friend and I had bought a case of beer (30 beers) and a bottle of Tequila to share. And when leaving the supermarket we agreed to also get some vodka, just to make sure, we wouldn’t run out of drinks.

Legal - No.
No so legal - Hell yes! I was asked to house sit for my neighbors and feed their dogs. One Sunday morning I went to feed their dogs before church. Helped myself to a shot or two of bourbon. Sunday school at church was more interesting that day...

My first technically legal drink was at the E-Club in Roosevelt Roads, PR where there was no actual age restriction.
My first legally over 21 purchased drink was at my favorite bar / restaurant in our home port where I went to celebrate my birthday some two weeks after my actual birthday.

First time at 18 or second time at 21? I remember having to get buddies to buy beer for me between the two.

1st legal? that would be a rum bowl at a tiki bar called Trader Vic's in Portland.

Legal? Bwahaha
I started drinking around 15yo on a trip to reno playing blackjack in a casino with the fam. Had a fake ID at 16 and the rest is history.
Funny enough, my first legal drink might have been in Reno as well. Ski trip in Tahoe for my 21st b-day and I was in a casino gambling / ordering a drink. It was the first time I was ever carded and I started laughing hysterically. The pit boss looked at me crazy cuz I probably been to Reno 20+ times at that point and bout 10+ times in that casino. Even funnier, my GF who was 2 years younger didn’t even get carded, WTF!

12:01 AM on my 21st at Fat Tuesday’s. It was their grape slush, I believe with rum and a friend had them put a float of Bacardi 151 on top.

I had been going to bars for a couple of years by then so I couldn't really celebrate my birthday 🤣😂

First drink of beer was Weidemans, Grandma's favorite.
First alcohol, was probably Jack Daniels cause that was always in the house.

Grew up in IL, but my father liked to recreate in WI. I don't know if it is still the case, but WI used to permit anybody to drink in a bar as long as their parents were at the bar with them. My first legal drink was a beer at a bar in Fond Du Lac when I was about 13.

I was 19 taking a summer course at UW. My housemates were kind enough to buy me my first beer, a Dos Equis gold label. It was delicious. They thought it was hilarious I had never had a beer. I don’t remember all the details, it was only one beer and they watched my face carefully as I enjoyed my first sips. That is still a favorite beer of mine. Very refreshing.
It did prejudice me against cheap American beer. In PDX at my small private school the “cheap” beer we brought to parties was Henry Weinhards (early 90s). Never did I ever attend a party where Coors or Bud were served. At best in my life I have sipped a Coors, made a face, and eschewed to drink more. #beersnob

I remember the day, technically. And the bar. But I’d already been drinking in that bar and plenty of other bars for a couple of years because none of them carded.
It was probably a Woodpecker Hard Cider. But that’s just a guess. So no, the first legal drink doesn’t stand out against all the not legal ones.

I lived in MD and was going to college in WV. I went home for the weekend and my birthday was Monday, so I played ho okey and got my new license before driving back to WV.
That evening, I went to buy a 6 pack and the convenience store clerk refused to believe that my license was legit because I got it in a different state the same day. Finally, after about 10 minutes, she relented.
BMisterGenX@reddit (OP)
When I was in college all of the bars that were in walking distance of the college had a rule that they wouldn't accept any out of state license unless you could produce two other documents like a credit card, social security card, school id, some sort of membership card etc, passport and and at least one required a photo on it.

So when I went to college in 1985, my roommate was a computer nerd when that sort of things was far less common. He had a burgeoning little side business making fake IDs for college students. By virtue of being his roommate, I was the test subject for quality control. Which meant I had (for the time) a very good fake ID.
I left college after a year (partied a lot, got booted out) but continued using that fake. I hung out a fair amount at a local near my house (did a shift or two there in the kitchen as a short order cook) and got to know the bartenders there pretty well. They stopped carding me after the first couple times I visited, but I was there 2-3 nights a week for a couple years. When I turned 21, that was my first stop of the evening, at which my pals absolutely ratted me out about the fake. The bartender got the manager, she demanded it, cut it half in front of me, then bought a round for all of us and her. Even nearly four years later, she said it was one of the best fakes she'd ever seen.

That's kind of funny because it makes me realize I turned 21 in the Army in Korea. So it was legal when I was got there at 20, and so the first legal drink was my first night there and I was blackout drunk on Soju rice wine with my new NCO supervisor sticking his finger down my throat to get me to puke it up yelling "give it up motherfucker," and then his wife gave me some hoodoo hangover cure and I woke up fine.
