Balkan unity — realistic or just talk?

Hello my Balkan friends,
Question to all of you both diaspora and those who never left your home countries.
I need to go a bit broader so you understand what I’m getting at.
When I sit with my Balkan friends here in Switzerland, having a drink and getting into those deep late night conversations, we often ask ourselves: will there ever be a time where all Balkan states can build some kind of alliance? I’m not talking about a Yugoslavia- style single nation, but more like an EU type concept.
From my perspective, mentally and culturally, we’re different from Western Europeans. For example, friends of mine who run construction or gardening companies often prefer hiring Balkan workers for certain roles. Their reasoning is simple: a typical Swiss worker finishes at 17:00 and goes home, while someone from the Balkans often pushes until the job is done because there’s more hunger to earn and succeed. That “all-in” mentality is something I hear a lot in success stories from Balkan people here. Many took bigger risks at some point in their lives.
I also look at countries like Serbia over the last 20 years there’s been serious development, especially in infrastructure. A lot is being built, things are moving.
Another interesting thing I’ve noticed: when I talk to older Swiss people (80+), they’re usually very positive about ex Yugoslavia..they used to go there on holiday. But when I talk to people in their 40s–50s, there are more stereotype thinking classic cliche.. aggressive, criminal, uneducated… the usual “Balkan = bad” narrative.
My father once told me a man who will truly unite the Balkans is someone who is born once every 1000 years.
Personally, I’m very optimistic about our region. I believe we have massive potential maybe even to become the “new Western Europe” in the future.
So my questions to all is
How do you see the Balkans today?
Do you have similar discussions with your friends?
How would you imagine a Balkan alliance working?
And how do you see the development of your countries over the last 20+ years more positive or negative?

Bulgaria - Greece - Romania - Croatia axis - yes. The rest I think don't blend with the above.
erythrocytes235@reddit
We already have Balkan unity. Bulgaria, Greece & Romania are heavily intertwined thanks to the EU.
alkorisno@reddit
It is not unity if you are under same occupier.
erythrocytes235@reddit
Okay explain what’s your alternative.
alkorisno@reddit
Yugoslavia, bad bigger, more organized and under bigger worker control
erythrocytes235@reddit
That ship sailed a long time ago.
alkorisno@reddit
It is comming back
AdventurousElk1900@reddit
Just talk. Anything else than business and tourism is just talk and talk. Coffee and speaking shit balkan way...
alkorisno@reddit
It is possible and it will come once we start being sent to die in Germany and Russias wars. It is desperation that will bring working class people together against the capitalist pedofiles
Taliskerhu@reddit
Just talk, if it's even that.
The EU is the only game in town, and rightfully so.
alkorisno@reddit
EU is not unification, it is colonisation.
Damirirv@reddit
It WAS possible, but that ship has sailed a while ago after the massive rise in nationalism and any chance of it happening again is nigh impossible now.
alkorisno@reddit
It is more of a show for the people, so they think they cant trust anyone and shouldnt trybto unite.
Besrax@reddit
I'd argue it wasn't possible even within Yugoslavia (they just put a lid on it temporarily, but it wasn't sustainable in the long term), let alone throughout the Balkans. Yugoslavia was aggressive towards several of its neighbors, so no chance for Balkan unity even back then.
belabacsijolvan@reddit
i mean its just V4 on deity difficulty. i dont think its impossible, especially since globalisation highlights the similarities.
but yeah, v4 isnt in a great shape either.
Skt_turbo@reddit (OP)
Yeah, it’s actually a pretty funny phenomenon the over the top pride and ultra nationalist mindset. I know enough of those types, but I know even more Balkan people who are the complete opposite. From what I’ve seen, it usually gets passed down from parents to their kids.

Eu has an engine which is Germany. No such country exist in the balkans. Eu also has level headed diplomats and bureaucrats which makes things work. We cant even get along in this sub.
I do think some closer form of cooperation would have been nice. Not like the eu.
Most eu member states also complain about how the union dictates what they need to be doing. Imagine a balkan country telling an another balkan country what to do because they have more votes in the balkan senate due to having more people.
markohf12@reddit
I've personally hired Balkan workers for construction dozens of times here in Netherlands and in the majority of the cases, Balkan workers were awful. Always drunk, never starting on time, quality is shit and then when he takes the money he is gone and blocks you.
The only exception to this is the Albanians who do have a good work ethic but are very hard to find due to visas/EU passport requirements and also one Bulgarian guy who was overbooked for months.

running a company with one of your fellow countryman.
Usually we have kinda good experience with Macedonians. My anecdotal experience says they are not so retarded like the rest of us.
When it comes to work, work will be done, people do put in some effort, I wont say they are lazy, but it's just hard to deal with them. It's always some kind of discussions going on. Either work related, why this, why that, or some political/economical/religious/historical stuff.
Tiresome shit. Throughout the years we had a lot of Hungarians and Ukrainians around and I do prefer the Hungarians over any of us. The Ukrainians I know make me believe that they are the most stupid nation in Europe, but the Hungarian guys are really working and are not so loud and obnoxious like we are.
Skt_turbo@reddit (OP)
Uff, that’s rough...sorry you had that experience. Of course, in every nationality you’ll find people with a strong work ethic and others who are the complete opposite.
MB4050@reddit
But… there’s the EU for that?
AmbientRiffster@reddit
I explained how Balkan unity could be achieved a few days ago and it got me banned for 3 days.

Duhhh. Do you need an answer from Kosovo Albanian? 😂

Uhmm, who wouldn’t want that? 😅
SeriousStart3221@reddit
Nah, we semi get along when we are far from here.
In a “foreign land,” we are like "brothers" whom life made go away from each other.
Here, we have too much history...
OkoMushrooom@reddit
I can’t wait for the day when I make myself part of the diaspora and put 2000 kilometers between me and the balkans and talk about the balkans like you with such observance. The fact of the matter is this place was never meant to be united and the most anyone can hope for are friendlier exchanges, better trade deals and funding in education and culture. As for the future, I’m not an optimist that we’ll be on par with the rest of Europe, ours is more isolated than everyone else so it’ll go nowhere meaningful.
Skt_turbo@reddit (OP)
I never meant a national unification. I’m talking about an EU style setup. Basically exactly what you’re describing: closer cooperation on trade, joint economic and infrastructure projects, better transport links, shared investments in education and innovation, and more coordination overall.
Nothing about giving up sovereignty just creating practical advantages together instead of everyone working against each other.
NightZT@reddit
I think this mentality correlates first and foremost with (perceived) wealth. Where I'm from most people were construction workers who worked for companies in Vienna during the week and on the weekend did unregistered work somewhere, built their own house or their relatives houses etc. They also worked much longer to get the job done and took pride in that (they also took pride in building their own houses with stolen materials from the companies lol). With perceived wealth significantly increasing in the last 20 years this mentality has partly disappeared, albeit with a time lag
Skt_turbo@reddit (OP)
You’re right..perceived wealth plays a big role in shaping that mentality. But overall, I’d say the mindset of many young people today is quite different from our parents’ generation.
EbbPlane1749@reddit
unity is not possible, we can respect each other and work towards a brighter future, but unity has been tried and tried again and it just doesn't work... we all value our national identities far too much
Skt_turbo@reddit (OP)
Like I said, I’m not talking about unity as one country. I mean an economic/cooperation pact. Each country keeps its sovereignty and borders just building advantages together: joint infrastructure projects across the Balkans, smoother trade and transport between us, and mutual incentives or subsidies. A practical, win-win setup without giving up national identity.
EbbPlane1749@reddit
if that's the case I think it's possible, for Kosovo for example we have many Serbian products in our stores, despite our obvious history
BingBong723@reddit
Need to respect eachother, first.

unity under the roman flag perhaps
Inside_Employer5531@reddit
Tomorrow's my turn to ask the same question
LenaLena93@reddit
Is unity in the room with us though.
I’d rather leave at peace, than be united and risk something happening in the future.
jinawee@reddit
That's the mentality of coming from a poorer country. Similar to Irish in the USA, Africans in Spanish fields, etc. I doubt a worker in Serbia will push their construction job for a shit salary. Or if they had strong unions/agreements or a rule-of-law based mentality.
Putrid_Pen3194@reddit
This “Balkan alliance” idea comes up every few months and it always dies at the same problem: the countries don’t even fully trust each other, so good luck building a mini EU out of that. An alliance would be Economic etc but not in the “one flag, one capital, one brain” way. That ship sailed a long time ago. Anything that starts sounding like a new Yugoslavia is dead on arrival because half the region would spend 10 years arguing about who gets offended first. The issue is since we start going to school on 1st grade we are taught in histories about our countries and how Our enemy is our neighbor but yes countries are better than 20 years ago, but politics is still stuck in drama mode.
Skt_turbo@reddit (OP)
Exactly . I don't believe a One Flagg State will ever be possible but this should also never be the Goal.
The most important thing would be a pact focused on the economy, trade, finance, building infrastructure, investing in projects and education, and simply creating more value for each other. A real win win situation for everyone should always be the goal.
