Experts warn climate change will make parts of Israel uninhabitable in decades
Posted by Acrobatic-Lynx-5018@reddit | collapse | View on Reddit | 129 comments
This article from Y Net News warns that one of America's most important military bases - Israel - may be uninhabitable very soon, with large parts of the base regularly exceeding 50C. This makes outdoor work nearly impossible at peak hours. Its unlikely that automation will be able to replace traditional construction work in time.
Collapse related because this region is already heavily armed and probably has hundreds of nuclear weapons at its disposal. Any serious environmental threat is going to lead to even more armed conflict - which will rapidly expand to nearby nations that are also grappling with unlivable conditions.
JHandey2021@reddit
Just speculation, but maybe Israel knows this. Part of the reason why they hold onto the Golan Heights so obsessively? And maybe eyeing more mountainous parts of Lebanon?
DissolveToFade@reddit
Israel is pretty small, what about the rest of the desert?
dirkdiggler2011@reddit
They know this so they are implementing their own Lebensraum campaign.
residentfan02@reddit
It won't be just Israel, people chearing it on don't realize it's all of the middle east, and guess where all the people living there will try to go... I wonder how long until the EU realizes and what they will do about it,
Comfortably-Numb2026@reddit
The EU already does realize this.
SilliusS0ddus@reddit
The ones who are pro immigration are in favour of environmentalism.
The ones who are harshly anti immigration are idiots who think climate change is fake.
WombatusMighty@reddit
Which tells you clearly that the far-right does not actually want to stop immigration and refugees, but wants more of them, as otherwise they have no argument to platform on anymore.
Any political party who actually wants to reduce immigration and refugees wants radical environmentalism and climate protection.
Kachimushi@reddit
Only if you care about the lives of immigrants. They want to reap the economic rewards of fossil fuels, and if people turn up on their border as a consequence they just want to gun them down.
WombatusMighty@reddit
Sadly true. Well they still want lots of migrants as cheap, exploitable labor ... who they can kick out any time they want, to cut costs even further (or not pay them at all).
Kachimushi@reddit
The capitalist dream system is what they have in the Gulf States, where all lower paid jobs are done by temporary migrant workers without rights under slavery like conditions.
SilliusS0ddus@reddit
nah they're just actually stupid and believe man made climate change is fake
WombatusMighty@reddit
For most of their voters that seems to be the case indeed.
obscure_predation@reddit
Not true
SilliusS0ddus@reddit
the official AfD position is that climate change is not man made
Sertalin@reddit
🏆🏅 Exactly. Look at Spain
Agreeable_Lawyer5924@reddit
EU already realized. It’s going to get very ugly. I am afraid there will be literal atrocities, massacres and genocides by the governments in Europe and the West against millions of migrants and refugees just to protect their borders such as deploying land mines, machine guns, biological weapons..
Kent955@reddit
Then those people will use technology (AI) to make viruses that kills western people.
thefumingo@reddit
Reading some of the European politics subs and yep, looks like that's the solution
"Let millions die or Europe is finished"
Agreeable_Lawyer5924@reddit
Btw also expected to hear news in the future like thousands of 2nd generation immigrants has been deported or disappeared all over Europe and the West by far right governments with many being send to third countries like Sudan or El Salvador…
Agreeable_Lawyer5924@reddit
Also in the future, expect to hear news like thousands of migrants drown after their boats got deliberately hit by missiles from joint Italy, Spain navy.
Eldgrimm@reddit
Hate to be the one to break this to you, but the Italian and Greek navies are ALREADY pushing/tugging migrant vessel back out of their territorial waters and letting people drown there. And especially Italy - with the help of FRONTEX - are helping the "Lybian Coast Guard" force boats back to Lybia, where the passengers are then either enslaved to transported to "camps" in the desert. Some are also just dumped somewhere in the Sahara, just to rid of them.
So this is not a case of "maybe in the future". This is already happening right now.
Agreeable_Lawyer5924@reddit
I agreed but it’s going to get a lot worse.
cathartis@reddit
The real issue is when the large populous ocuntries become uninhabitable - places like Iran and Egypt. For example, Teheran, a city of 9 million people, was already struggling with water supplies even before the current conflict started wrecking infrastructure. Add climate change on top of that...
daviddjg0033@reddit
Realize? Its already happening now been happening.
Millions of workers HAVE fled the Arabian Peninsula allies Kuwait Bahrain and Saudi Arabia - millions of migrant workers fled to India, Pakistan, many fled to as far as the mountains of Nepal and farther east than Bangladesh into Malaysia. Counrtless Phillipinos left the Peninsula and Israel after 45 Thai nationals were killed with the hostages during 2023. Then you had Iran deciding to destroy so many oil facilities Russia is selling oil.
Three countries lost desalination plants in 2026 in the middle of the world's harshest desert UAE, KSA and Kuwait.
80% to 100% of drinking water is supplied by these plants that use massive amounts of energy to defy nature. Trumo threatened to but did not destroy Persian water so Gulf countries can no longer sustain that population let alone their own. The situation is so dire that these workers number - in the millions if the Westerners that fled to North America and Europe were hundreds of thousands.
After the longest and still continuing Internet blackout in Iran or most of the Farsi speaking world Iranian leaders are still tweeting.... for US and EU consumption only. The damage is done. The Straits will be droned forever just like Iranian backed houthis will ensure product moves past the horn of Africa.diverting revenue or pay a toll. This is like the 1990s Solali Pirates won and can blackmail the largest trade routes in global history.
Ayatollahs were going to flee to Russia while Tehran collapses this summer before they fire a nuclear weapon - 125F this summer zero day water in Tehran are coming and no amount of fixing leaky pipes will save em. Millions of Afghanis that fled Afghanistan for Iran or the Saudi Peninsula will be coming to Europe or wherever they can flee because water is the limit to growth.

violence and upheaval for millenniaIt was a relatively peaceful area for hundreds of years before the First World War - a quiet backwater of the Ottoman Empire.
DoomBloom001@reddit
Relatively. Middle-age was efficiently barbaric at a big scale as well, just that it took few decades to slaughter the same amount world wars did in few years....and any war keep all around the globe. Humans are wonderful, as always. Bloody corpses by thousands of thousands replaced by human-made natural disasters is already the new reality, a mass grave for millions of living species on the coming menu and above all, human species in self-denial OUT. This is like saying climate change will make parts of New Jersey uninhabital...its not that big - its either all gonna be bad or not. I guess the immediate coast might be ok, but my point stands - its not the like the size of the US or Brazil etc....its like 3 Delawares.
whereismysideoffun@reddit
Israel is what was being mentioned. Jordan and farther east are are going to get wrecked. Most of western Asia will be uninhabitable by that time.
cathartis@reddit
Exactly the author only wrote about Israel because like many Israelis, he doesn't care about the states around it. However, there is a huge highly populated region running from Egypt through the Middle East and Iran and into Pakistan and Northern India that is right on the front line of climate change.
Cyberpunkcatnip@reddit
Sure, but that land mass is going to grow every year. Moving doesn’t solve the problem long term.
phwark@reddit
It’s not about the size but about how heavy the financial investment in its military has been.
trivetsandcolanders@reddit
Actually, there’s a decent amount of climate variation in Israel. Eilat, mentioned in the article, averages 15 degrees Fahrenheit warmer throughout the year than Jerusalem.

Imagine the ones telling Israeli Arabs or Jews to go back to Poland - where 6M lived or 1/3 the global population but only graveyards remain. The Armenian Quarter of Jerusalem will go back to lands many have not seen since their trail of tears. The Sephardic Jews cannot go back to Libya or Yemen those lands will be beyond Israel in temperature.
There is nowhere for these nomadic people to go. Nobody wants either the Jews certainly not Europe nor the Palestinians. A barbed wire concrete fort citting Gaza off from Egypt. Druze are not welcome across the Israeli border let alone a continent away.
Its not just Jews, there are groups like Kurds or Zoroastrians treated worse than the gypsy exterminated by Nazi Germany while the Eastern European Jews got smoked 1/3 of all Jews perishe. Palestinians, the ones that have a 8 concrete wall fence separating them from Egypt or a Jordan that will not give them passports so eternal refugees roam are not wanted. . Millions that live in Israel proper and want nothing to do with Hamas, fight alongsidd the IDF or were Fatah killed by Hamas are going where?

We'd expect the Gulf states become uninhabitable much sooner. Arguably they already reached that point sometimes, but being rich they'll need attacks on infrastructure at just the right time.
https://news.climate.columbia.edu/2020/05/08/interactive-map-daily-maximum-wet-bulb-temperature/
It's primarily the tropics that're fucked. The Gulf states like just between tropical and subtropical, but while being anomalously hot and sometimes humid. India and many tropical nations have similarly dangerous regions.
Israel however has much lower temperatures and lower humidity than the Gulf states and many tropical countries. The article says "experts predict that rising temperatures and dust storms will make regions like the Jordan Valley and southern Arava unlivable by the end of the century."
I'd expect yes but Israelis would heard about large scale heat deaths before it comes for them. If you want the schadenfreude expressed in this thread, then you'll have to make due with the boarders all being closed to refugees before almost anymore escapes their local heat.
