"Roll marks" have almost became a non existent thing of the past but I think the term is so common it's used for factory engraved info as well nowadays. Not long ago engraving like caliber on the slide were roll marks
They're specifically laser engraved and not roll engraved. Roll stamping was the way to do machine engraving for a long time, so the term "roll mark" stuck to describe the base markings on guns.
California requires a magazine disconnect on their safety roster handguns. I think a couple other states require it as well. So that label just means these are non-CA, NY, etc compliant guns.
With how few guns those legislators want sold in their states, it would be easier to deface all the ones that are compliant than aren't. Kinda like how Ruger goes and defaces all of their Mark 4s with that compliance verbiage.
Yeah, unfortunately CA is a huge market even with the roster and S&W sells a shit ton of neutered pistols there. But at least these don't have the obnoxiously large loaded chamber indicator. 1" long, painted red on the sides and sticks up 2-3mm.
No, we get that CA is a large enough market that they want to sell to it.
The point is that firearms neutered to comply with CA's unconstitutional BS ought to be the ones defaced with markings like these, not the ones made for sale to the remaining free states.
A lot of agencies require them. I used to work at an agency that did.
Government contracts are a big deal and Smith and Wesson makes a lot of money from those so they'll add extra features especially if it's in the contract.
If it’s a magazine disconnect, the firearm shouldn’t even discharge the round in the chamber. And I agree, that can be a safety feature for law enforcement who statistically more likely to be shot with their own gun than with any other gun. Granted, suicide likely the largest culprit there. But still, not a horrible feature in a hand-to-hand fight to be able to disable the firearm with a quick press of a magazine release.
Ours would not fire without the magazine. That's been years ago though. I just know that Smith and Wesson was one of the companies that offered us a contract. We ended up going with the 229 DAK that had the magazine. disconnect.
No shit a magazine-fed gun can only fire one round with the magazine removed. There's simply no reason to marr up the slide with text reminding you of that.
Oh, I apologize, I misunderstood you. I thought you were talking about a magazine disconnect. I didn't know if they were still doing that or not but some federal agencies used to require them.
The makers name and location are ATF required markings. Does not surprise me that that make it off many machines, nitride finishing and final laser marks without even one of many people noticing.
Today’s workforce really does not give a fuck. But wants a liVaBle wAgE for their bullshit.
"[People want high remuneration without having to work for it]"
While I'm sure that's true for some portion of the workforce, I think that you're mischaracterizing reality for the majority of cases.
Alternatively, there's also the fact that there are a lot of companies that want to ignore the fact that the law of supply and demand applies to the labor market, and that offering rock-bottom remuneration tends to adversely impact both the quality and quantity of applicants. In other words, companies that offer low pay tend to attract "workers" who are lazier, and who will be inclined to become even lazier when they realize that their employers can't afford to replace them.
At the same time, there's also the fact that many manufacturers demand such high productivity that stuff like this tends to slip through the cracks from time to time, due to a mix of worker fatigue, insufficient time allowed for inspection tasks, and/or employees not knowing any better.
Thats a very concerning lack of QC... I get how someone could gloss over it but I guess they gotta add "check stampings on slide" now lmao.
It does make me question buying S&W guns with QC like this, I now some people get S&W revolvers and have to send them in for repairs, fortunately my recently acquired 442 UC was perfect.
I get what you mean in that nobody actually looked at the slide and said, hey, wait a minute. However, my experience with S&W pistols has always been fine. Never had one that didn't do exactly what it was supposed to do.
The part under the ejection port where is says "Caution - Capable of firing with Magazine removed"
It's one of those warnings put on a gun because the lawyers said so. Anyone who pays some attention would know that's the case without a warning and it's ugly and pretty unnecessary.
If we saw that on a 100yr old revolver, we would think it made it more collectible and valuable, just like misprinted stamps or coins. I’d buy that and document its original condition,,, maybe a great-great grandkid could sell it for a candy bar or something like that.
If you like it, great but I would NOT want a firearm missing its branding. The only thing S&W could do without is the “capable of firing with magazine removed” warning. I like classy m&p branding but some companies do too much.

Holup.
This thing lacks at least some legally required information based on the Gun Control Act of 1968.

S&W done goofed this up.

Rollmarks missing on the slide.
Took me a while too
PlaceUserNameHere67@reddit
When you say "roll marks" are you speaking of the engravings??
I've never heard that term before.
43433@reddit
Roll marks are a real thing, these aren't it though. Pretty sure they are engravings. Roll marks are just that, rolled into metal with a stamp.
Inevitable-Sleep-907@reddit

Yes

Yes. The large M&P branding markings on both sides the slide are not there.
the_duck17@reddit
Sorry, I'm used to working in milsurps and ar-15s so I tend to use rollmarks, proof marks, etc.
But yeah, slide engraving is the more accurate way of saying it.
Ps3godly@reddit

It's an imaginary benefit. You're struggling with a subject who is going for your gun and instead of shooting them, you drop the mag. Beautiful.
The most popular service pistol is the Glock and there's no version of it that has a magazine disconnect as far as I'm aware.
