There's a total of 7 of these in existence, so that accounts for all but 1 lol.
5 original production LMs, two standard F1s that were upgraded to LM at some point I think.
pz760@reddit (OP)
There are only six F1 LM -- five production cars (LM1 through LM5) and a prototype (owned by McLaren).
The so-called "LM-specification" cars are not real F1 LMs, they are normal F1s with modifications done afterwards. No one considers them as F1 LMs.
RIP_Soulja_Slim@reddit
I was under the impression that McLaren recognized them as real LMs and designated as such on the engines and what not? Is that inaccurate?
pz760@reddit (OP)
Don't believe so but paging u/peloton25
Going off VINs, only 5 LM plus the prototype.
RIP_Soulja_Slim@reddit
This is what I was going off, since it was done by McLaren themselves.
https://dyler.com/blog/485/mclaren-f1-lm-spec-two-exceptionally-rare-creations
But obvs the end result is pretty similar- I'm sure the factory originals go for far more than the two that were upgraded post manufacture.
Peloton25@reddit
A lot has been written about the two cars referred to as “LM-specification” and much of it is confusing and wrong.
To be very clear, the factory have never converted any F1 road car into an F1 LM and they did not supply this “LM-spec” designation on the two cars in question either. While the conversion of both took place about the same time in 2001, the term “LM Specification” wasn’t used publicly until 2015 by RM when they sold chassis 073 in their Pinnacle Portfolio sale. This was done at the behest of the consignor who wanted an obvious distinction made between his car and other McLaren F1s.
While it is true that chassis 018 and 073 both have the higher output V12 engine similar to the F1 LM, when you actually study the visual and technical details of these two modified F1s the similarities with an F1 LM largely stop there. These cars retain full interiors trimmed in a specification similar to that of the F1 GT longtail road cars. They also retain both luggage compartments and lack the LM’s remote oil cooler and large duct that dominate the right side of the car. They retain the road car’s standard synchromesh gearbox instead of the straight-cut gearbox the LMs feature that was found in the GTRs as well.
Visually you will find no duct in the bonnet panel, no side skirts, the wrong vents over the front wheel arches, the lack of a NACA duct at the base of the upper engine cover. They lack the GTR wreath logos on the coil pack covers in the engine bay and it’s also missing from their wing endplates - a feature unique to the 6 actual F1 LMs.
Most importantly— you will find ZERO F1 LM badges anywhere on F1s 018 or 073. They are so far removed from an actual F1 LM when you really compare details that it’s sad how many have become confused by that marketing effort. If McLaren wanted these two cars to be recognized as LMs they certainly could have given them a badge somewhere and believe it’s extremely telling that they did not.
The story of the “LM Specification” designation was also further reinforced in the public domain when RM marketed F1 073 again in 2018 through their Private Sales division, and also when they sold chassis 018 via their Monterey auction in 2019 - again applying that same marketing term. In spite of these efforts and the current owner of 073’s brazen attempt at upbadging his car with an “F1 LM” placard where the license plate belongs, they are not F1 LMs and those who continue to refer to them that way are still wrong.
I’d also like to point out for anyone who is still reading here this video which McLaren Automotive produced with the owner of 018 prior to that sale by RM in 2019. In it you will find no mention of it being an “F1 LM” - the term is only used to describe its race engine in the caption which is the appropriate way to do so, yet can still confuse those with only a general knowledge of these great cars.

Do you happen to have a post with the complete history of the 5LMs? I would love to know where they’ve been owned and their transaction history if possible but I guess that only applies to 2 out of 3. Also which ones are which colors?
Unreachable1@reddit
What a beautiful little F1 lesson.
Montjo17@reddit
Yeah, those very much are not real LMs. MSO in this context is also not quite the same as the Mclaren factory, they are a separate company even if they do work very closely with McLaren. The two cars in that article also don't have the same interior as the real LMs. They're 'simply' cars with the HDK that have also had an engine upgrade by MSO. Very special cars no doubt, but not real LMs
mintz41@reddit
Think you're confusing Lanzante and MSO, because MSO is part of McLaren
Peloton25@reddit
Not sure where you are getting that MSO ≠ McLaren Factory. They are a wholly owned entity of McLaren Automotive and can trace continuous existence as part of the company since the F1s were produced. They started life known as “McLaren Customer Care” and looked after every F1 (supported by authorized service centers around the globe) since 1994. Their original building was literally the factory where every McLaren F1 was produced and housed the offices of McLaren Cars Limited which was the company Gordon Murray founded to design, engineer and produce the F1. Present day they look after all the McLaren Heritage cars and they also focus on personalization requests from McLaren Automotive customers for new and recent products. They also develop limited run McLaren models based on existing platforms. It is very much “McLaren” through and through no matter which way you look at it.
RIP_Soulja_Slim@reddit
Good info, thanks!
woodsides@reddit
Nope. Only 5 Road cars and 1 prototype of the LM were made. The other two cars (chassis 018 & 073) were just upgraded with the LM engine later in the 2000s because McLaren had some extra GTR engines laying around and we're struggling for cash. They are not real LMs and McLaren has never claimed as such.
All the "LM specification" talk came around because RM Sotheby's was auctioning one and used that word in their marketing material to increase interest.
hundredjono@reddit
The saddest thing about these is that they probably haven't been ran in over 20 years and are just collecting dust inside of a garage
Gas_Grass_Ass_Class@reddit
I saw this car on track at Autobahn County Club in Joliet. Couldn’t believe my eyes.
Super cool car, but the fact that both the owner and buyer have multiple says that many aren’t much more than just a value holding asset at this point. I have to admit though, I’d much rather have a couple of these than Van Gogh’s or Picasso’s
No_Skill_All_Luck@reddit
I went down there that day to the ABCC when McLaren Chicago teased that there would be some heavy hitters accompanying the Elva they were showing. Was absolutely spectacular seeing the GOAT up close, and getting to hear it fly around the track and get some action shots of it was something else.
Gas_Grass_Ass_Class@reddit
Seeing one in person at all is already nearly a once in a lifetime experience for most enthusiasts. Actually getting to see it ripping around a track is enough to make you pinch yourself and wonder if you’re dreaming.
hoxxxxx@reddit
it's been like that for a minute w/ the f1s hasn't it
Gas_Grass_Ass_Class@reddit
They’ve been crazy valuable for a while, but a lot of them have been driven a pretty significant number of miles as far as multimillion dollar hyper cars are concerned. They’ve been known to be one of the all time great drivers cars, and the crazy acceleration and top speed were really just byproducts of Gordon and the team covering all of their bases to make one of the truly great machines ever created. But yes, they have been in stable asset territory for a while now and more and more they will just be bought up and put away for future 8 digit exchanges of wealth.
hoxxxxx@reddit
at least they used to get driven
it's my bedroom poster car, as it was for many of us here. that's so cool you actually got to see one tho, i've never seen one.
Gas_Grass_Ass_Class@reddit
When I looked up and saw the mango orange color streak past I immediately knew what it was, but I almost couldn’t believe my eyes. They shut the whole track down just so it could make laps.
Blew.My.Mind.
hoxxxxx@reddit
oh hell yeah, an f1 shows up to a track like that they get to own it while they're on it.
PioneerDingus@reddit
I’m happy to have seen in at a local show in Hinsdale. Sad to see it go. Can’t imagine letting go of it if I was the owner.
SeanFUT@reddit
Damn what show was that?
PioneerDingus@reddit
It is held twice a year in Hinsdale. Once on Father’s Day and usually the second Sunday in December. The same owner still has 3 other F1’s and usually brings one of them. He brought one of them to the most recent show despite it snowing. Not many F1 owners use theirs let alone drive them in the snow lol.
SeanFUT@reddit
That's awesome, I'm going to check out the next ones. Never seen an F1 in person
PioneerDingus@reddit
They’re out there! I’m up to 8 of them now.
pur_noir@reddit
this or GTR will eventually become the most expensive car in the world.

The F1 LM is incredibly pretty, but wow does that look unpleasant to drive.
nsfdrag@reddit
Wow, gorgeous car, love the color.
NoctD@reddit
Utter stupid waste of fine cars in these never driven collections.
drop_top_dan@reddit
Usually true, but Fanch is the exception. He drives the hell out of all of his cars - 917, Ferrari 412P, all of his F1s, 250 GTO, etc. Dude daily drove a damn chiron pur sport and then centodieci for a while. Worth a follow on instagram.
NoctD@reddit
Great to hear, thanks for correcting me!
vhs29@reddit
As good as a new owner as it gets all things considered, doubt this will be a garage queen.
El_mochilero@reddit
These cars are trophies and investments.
Annoying_Orre@reddit
You should check him out on instagram, this guy actually drives his ”trophy” cars and posts a lot of pictures and reviews. Fanchracing
Thomas_633_Mk2@reddit
He has 6 of the bloody things: while I freely admit this is the politics of envy, it's still pretty outrageous and they'll be very rarely used (he can't, it's the nature of a collection that big).
StrangeSmellz@reddit
What's this guy's story?
pz760@reddit (OP)
Yeah he has literally won twice in his class at the 24Hrs of Le Mans. He knows how to drive and he drives the piss out of his F1s.
Bullshit-_-Man@reddit
He’s a really lovely man, I’ve had many dealings with him around his collection and he is a really, really nice guy
vhs29@reddit
Hence the "all things considered" in my comment.
strongmanass@reddit
This is exactly what I said in the Rolls Royce thread yesterday. This sub doesn't actually have a problem with people spending a lifetime's sum of money on a car. It's only if those same people decide to buy a luxury car instead of a hypercar this week that this sub considers them evil and stupid.
Thomas_633_Mk2@reddit
I'm genuinely shocked people aren't upset that one guy is hoarding like 1/10th of the global supply of McLaren F1's: I don't care how much you drive them, having 6 is just outrageous.
RazingsIsNotHomeNow@reddit
God it looks so good in McLaren Orange.
stoned-autistic-dude@reddit
Damn. I was going to buy this. Had it saved on marketplace.

Snooze you lose.

My Cricket Wireless internet connection gave up on me just as I was about to put a bid in for $46 million. I guess I'll wait for the next one to be for sale.

was checking my couch cushions for spare change but only found 42 million instead of the 45 needed. Maybe next time when one of brunei cars goes up for sale
AbyCog@reddit
I know right? I was literally about to click "Buy It Now" but then my dog needed to go out. By the time I came back it was sold.
