Movies alone

I went to see Project Hail Mary in the middle of the day yesterday by myself and it was great. On average over the last 30+ years I probably averaged 1 movie in the theater per 2-3 years. For the last 20 they have always included someone else. When I was a kid there was a theater by our house that I went to all of the time ( sometimes with friends). I got in free because my sister worked there and got in free.
Being able to sit with my popcorn + MMs and no distractions was awesome. I saw at least 2 other most likely Gen X there alone as well.
Karate_Lauren@reddit
I ♥️ going to the movies alone…sometimes the theaters in my area show 70s or 80s movies on Sundays and that’s pretty cool. I saw Close Encounters and Raiders OTLA while enjoying a giant buttered popcorn!
Kennesaw79@reddit
I prefer to see movies alone, since I can't stand people talking to me during the film. Also, my schedule allows me to go to a matinee during the week, while most people can't. There haven't been that many movies I've wanted to see in the theater in the last few years, but I used to see maybe 8-10 a year by myself.
Reader47b@reddit
I go to a movie alone about 2 times a year. I go to a movie with someone about once every two years. I'd rather go with someone. If someone wanted to go with me, that would be my preference. I don't mind going alone, but I always enjoy more going with someone.
LaeliaCatt@reddit
Going to movies alone is the best. Total immersion, a break from everything and everyone.
Available_Wolf1059@reddit
Been a while since I last went to a movie. The last Star Wars movie in a theater. Rides Of Skywalker? I don’t remember. I went alone. And when I mean alone, really alone. Family didn’t want to go and when I got there I was the only person in the theater. I had the whole movie to myself.
Kodiak01@reddit
I also went to see PHM alone last Friday morning. Unfortunately, the people sitting just behind and to the side of me in the Imax theater were constantly rocking their squeaky seats back and forth.
Bahlore@reddit
The only person I'd really go to a movie with is my wife, and she has zero interest in seeing the movies I wanna see, so I go alone. Or, better yet, if I can, I wait for them to come out on streaming and watch them on my tv or pc.
Civil_Inspector_5697@reddit
I LOVE going to movies by myself. It’s such a treat!
discoprince79@reddit
I see about 40+ movies a year at the theater. It's my happy place.
Fit-Reality-2872@reddit
Saw project Hail Mary by myself Friday afternoon. I almost always go to movies myself. But never in the evenings when it’s busy.
Significant-Sign414@reddit
I’m going to go see The Backrooms alone if I can’t get my son to go join me.
Beruthiel999@reddit
I love going to movies alone! Sometimes schedules just don't line up and that's OK and honestly I really enjoy absolutely no expectation of making conversation (in fact it's frowned upon). I just saw Project Hail Mary alone too! Other movies I saw solo in the past year and really enjoyed were Sinners, Frankenstein, One Battle After Another, Wake Up Dead Man
Background_Swim_5954@reddit
I saw this movie by myself last Friday. There are few things I enjoy more than seeing a matinee stoned out of my gourd, even after 40 years of doing it.
BazingaQQ@reddit
Hmm... movie in cinema stoned... sounds like something i need to try...
Ihadsumthin4this@reddit
Watch "Body Double" while nicely blazed. Adds to the already pre-Lynchian experience.
Background_Swim_5954@reddit
Oh man, Body Double is still one of my all time favorite stoned matinee experiences from way back. I was actually thinking about it when I posted above.
Geezguys3@reddit
Inspiration for today—4/20!
I_love_Hobbes@reddit
Was the movie good?
vagabondizer@reddit (OP)
I loved it. One of the best I have seen.
KingPabloo@reddit
Loved the book, loved the movie - both are fantastic!
MundaneHuckleberry58@reddit
I used to love going to the movies by myself. I haven’t in years but you’re reminding me why i should.
phillymjs@reddit
The last time I went to a movie with another person was one of the Kingsman movies, IIRC it was the second one, so that would've been 2017.
I have different taste in movies than my few remaining friends, only one lives close enough to make going to a movie together practical, and she's busy with a demanding job and raising a family. I'm lucky to meet up with her for lunch 2 or 3 times per year.
There just aren't that many movies anymore that I want to see badly enough to venture out to a theater. Here's the full list of them since the pandemic: Blackberry; Oppenheimer; Dogma (screening followed by Q&A with Kevin Smith); The Long Walk; The Running Man; and Project Hail Mary, twice (the second time was just this afternoon).
kevbayer@reddit
Absolutely nothing wrong with going alone. Sometimes it's more relaxing and self-care that way.
Fair-Wishbone-1190@reddit
I'm going to Devil wears Prada 2 alone. And later this year Terrifier 4. I couldn't care less what others think of me.
TripMaster478@reddit
Yeh I only went b/c my 13yo wanted to go. But it was very good definitely bested my expectations for movies these days.
Displaced_in_Space@reddit
I have historically gone to a lot of movies alone. The wife and I love movies, whether at the theatre (ours has in-seat cocktail service, so hard not to love) or at home.
But there's a whole category of movies that she has no interest in: goofy/slapstick comedy, most superhero movies, any kind of fighting movie, etc. So I'll duck out of work and take a long lunch to see one in the middle of the day a couple times a year. I work \~60 hours a week, so I don't feel like I"m cheating anyone....
Phobos1982@reddit
I went alone all the time before Covid. I usually did the late night shows. It was awesome not having inconsiderate asshats there.
PossumJumpRopeSquad@reddit
I have a funny covid story. So the whole social distancing thing was in effect and the theaters around here just began implementing the selection of seats. I took my young boys to go watch a showing of The Thing (1982).
I had to pick seats. Where were the only 3 selectable seats in there? Right behind the only 2 other people in the whole theater. So much for social distancing. Lol
Phobos1982@reddit
Haha.
Initial_Run1632@reddit
This is the way.
Psycosteve10mm@reddit
I have taken it a step further. Nothing like having a flat screen, my favorate recliner, an ice cold beer, and some popcorn at home. I can even roll up beforehand if I feel like it.
Ihadsumthin4this@reddit
Sounds like a triple feature tonight thus ringing-in 4/20 for this year!!!
Titles you might explore....
Repo Man (1984) ° Creepshow pt I (1982) ° Eating Raoul (1983)
Thoughts?
Psycosteve10mm@reddit
/s I was thinking movies more like Triumph of the Will to mark the occasion.
Repo Man is great, but Kung Pow Enter the Fist, Shaun of the Dead, and Dolemite seem like a good plan. I just don't feel like finding my VHS player and hooking it up to watch that movie.
vagabondizer@reddit (OP)
I watch movies at home more often, but to me some movies are better in a theater. I also pay more attention instead of looking at my phone, yelling at the dogs, or answering questions from girlfriend.
TreffyBelmknt@reddit
I looove going to the movies by myself. I love to go with my partner. I love going to the movies.
Ihadsumthin4this@reddit
Have you considered MAKING movies? 😄
How could I resist asking? 🙂
TreffyBelmknt@reddit
Yeah actually. I’m almost finished with my first script and I’ve two in my pocket to write next.
Ihadsumthin4this@reddit
Major congrats!!
CompetitiveBee5285@reddit
I go to the opera @ cinemas . Alone . I was inviting people to go with me, but they don't appreciate them . I was always happy to invite someone and then disappointed when I realized they don't have the passion for them. It is much better going solo, then a nice exquisite dinner by myself. I live for the Opera, and all the passion that goes with the stories
AggravatingPie710@reddit
I go at least once a week, sometimes two or three times, almost always alone since I’ve been single the last 11 years. I prefer it, but wish I had more frequent cinemagoers to talk about the movies with!!! Offline!!!!!
vagabondizer@reddit (OP)
I saw a lady ~55-60 that was there alone in the lobby after the movie and I almost asked her how she enjoyed it as I figured she was my kind of people. I then figured it might look creepy and kept walking.
AggravatingPie710@reddit
Ii made a friend when someone approached me randomly like this after a movie a couple years ago! Do it! Worst that can happen is they’re not in the mood to talk!
PDM_1969@reddit
I've always enjoyed going alone...can lose myself in the movie and just chill
SirMixSalah@reddit
I have AMC A list and it's so great for seeing moves right after work when there is almost no one there except for me!
nowaywonderfulday@reddit
Me too! I just got this after taking a package at work. I’ve been going to the movies during the day by myself and loving it
HighSeasArchivist@reddit
I still enjoy going to the movies, and by myself is fine as well. Two years legally separated after 25 and I'm starting to learn how to do things alone.
merrryone1124@reddit
Solo movie dates are a gift!!
califbeach@reddit
The people in the audience crinkle noisy food wrappers so I don't go.
vagabondizer@reddit (OP)
The only noise I heard during the whole movie was someone chuckle at one point. I was chuckling as well, just quieter. Early in the day there was not more than 10 people in the theater and all adults.
ivan_scantron@reddit
I'm with you. It's unbearable, especially during the quiet parts of movies
cocoaboscoe@reddit
I love to go to the movies by myself!
Ineffable2024@reddit
I go almost every weekend!
KDFree16@reddit
I have been going solo to movies for years. I enjoy it as well. I appreciate seeing the films on the big screen and it is so much easier to schedule going with just me :)
LadyNorbert@reddit
I haven't done it in a while but I do like going to a movie alone sometimes! There's something oddly satisfying about the experience. My area has a wonderful art deco theater that's more than a hundred years old (historic landmark) and it's my favorite place for that. Free parking, and the prices are so reasonable that I can get my ticket, a large popcorn, and a large drink for less than $20. (It used to be less than $10 but even they had to raise prices in recent years. Still a fantastic value though.)
Foamfollower_65@reddit
I always go alone in the day. When I go with friends, they tend to talk during a movie, which I despise.
They ask me to go and I just say no.
PepsiAllDay78@reddit
I LOVE going to the movies by myself! I always look for what's playing on Thursday, because that's when the new movies actually come out, and very few people know this. I've been the only one in the theater before! Thursday matinee are the best!
scrappysmomma@reddit
I have not been to a movie in a theater in several years because it’s so much more comfortable to watch at my home or a friends house. Better snacks, comfy seating, volume set at perfect level, and it’s possible to pause for a bathroom break on a longer movie. And the floor isn’t sticky. Basically the theaters lost my business when large flat screens and affordable surround sound became commonly available.
Not sure I have gone to a movie alone in my adult life. I enjoy sharing the experience. People-watching together before the thing starts, discussing what we thought after.
When I was a kid, there was a summer where my mom bought a ticket bundle from a nearby theater and would drop me off to watch a movie while she went to do errands or whatever. (I bet the theaters would have issues with that now, I was only maybe 10 at the time). That’s the only time I ever saw movies solo.
Remember dollar theaters? We lived near one in the 90s and saw pretty much every movie that came through there.
vagabondizer@reddit (OP)
I forgot about dollar theaters. I did have a 6 month span in my late 20s when I had alot of free time during the week and would go to the theater and see when the next movie I cared to see started, then go to the Pizza Inn next door and get the buffet until it was time. Probably 1 day per week when I was home. Then I got a girlfriend.
MoreCowbellllll@reddit
I’ve never done this, although it sounds amazing
Weak_Ad6116@reddit
I love going to the movies by myself!
Lrgdustbunnybreeder@reddit
In high school I used to skip classes to go to the movies. Seen Platoon a few times so I called it a history lesson.
bene_gesserit_mitch@reddit
First movie I saw alone was Raiders of the Lost Ark back when it came out. Rode my bike out to the mall. I've done it since and it seems to perplex some people. Had a girlfriend who was chagrined to see me at the mall alone, thought it was weird to go to a movie alone. Nothing wrong with it. I'm a good date.
Maleficent-Guess-581@reddit
I love going to movies by myself. My local movie house has $5 Tuesdays all day. It's the best.
Legitimate-Fruit-609@reddit
Im doing this on Thursday. Can't wait.
MakeASwallow3@reddit
I do this too!
TaintFraidOfNoGhost@reddit
One battle after another was fantastic alone.
Bokononfoma@reddit
I discovered this at a young age when I worked in a theater. I much prefer going solo. No questions and way fewer distractions.
My movie watching has really fired back up lately. A theater near me sold "memberships" at $20 a year. I get all sorts of discounts and they started showing older movies - some themes, some random. With a membership they are $6. I've seen Airplane!, Monster Squad, Mulholland Drive, Princess Mononoke, The Hidden Fortress, 2001, Army of Darkness, Babe, etc. Pretty empty theaters for a lot of these too.
PermuhGrin@reddit
Movies and concerts alone are the best ones Ive experienced. I only have to be responsible to myself. We all need a break from the other people in our life sometimes.
mom2artists@reddit
The older I get, the more the sentiment of this post appeals to me. 🤔🫠
allaboutaphie@reddit
Well concert, I need someone to watch over me from doing something stupid..lol I know dont be stupid..ha ha But movie 100% should be enjoyed alone.
eastbaypluviophile@reddit
I learned to like doing things alone when I went back to school at the age of 25. I could go to a cheap matinee if I wanted because I wasn’t working full time. That time in my life profoundly changed me and I became much more independent, embraced my introverted personality and learned to thrive alone.
hdhdhgfyfhfhrb@reddit
I pay for the Regal unlimited. Just about $20 a month and unlimited viewings for that. If I catch 2 movies a month it pays for itself. I go to the earliest showing on Saturday or Sunday morning. I usually go alone and more often than not have the theater to myself. I wouldn't change it for anything.
Locoelectrician@reddit
I’m happily married and go to the moves alone all the time. I probably see 25 movies a year and over half of them I go by myself.
KurtStation68@reddit
I find watching movies alone is fine - it's bad when a movie was good or thoughtful but there's no one to share it with. But I guess that moment is mine to own.
FBS351@reddit
I used to go to the movies with family members and we would have some enjoyable conversation afterwards. Nothing intense, but more than "It was OK". I've found that a lot of people don't want to do this, or at least can't, like, they don't really have any opinions about the film they just saw. Which seems bizarre to me. But that's the only reason I can see to go to the movies with other people. I don't want to talk during the movie, and if it's just about spending time together I'd prefer to do almost anything else
the_answer_is_RUSH@reddit
I have never had the need to talk to someone during a movie so going alone is the best.
wheresbill@reddit
I love going to the movies alone. Haven’t been back to a theater since Covid though
doesanyuserealnames@reddit
Regarding Project Hail Mary, it's rare that I leave a theatre feeling so much better than when I entered it. What a mood elevator 🤩
SatanicPanic619@reddit
Beautiful film. I cried. Kind of a lot.
vagabondizer@reddit (OP)
I got misty eyed. I guess this could be another benefit of being alone. Nobody to see you cry :)
Effective_Role_8910@reddit
They did a great job capturing the friendship in the book and resisted the urge to Hollywood up the action…like the end of The Martian
voteblue18@reddit
Movies are one of those things that are enjoyed alone just as much if not more than when you go with someone.
That’s what they make lousy first dates. You can’t even talk during most of it.
scrappysmomma@reddit
A movie alone is a terrible date, but if followed by dinner it is a good date because it gives you something to talk about over dinner.
mldyfox@reddit
I haven't been to a movie theater alone in a few years. Mist movies I want to see I'll wait til they're streaming.
Once or twice a year, though, I plan a visit to my sister's place around a movie we both want to see.
websterella@reddit
I prefer to go alone.
Twizt1Up@reddit
Back in the 80s my bff (still to this day) worked at the mall movie theater. I smuggled in a joint and a few tallboy beers and he escorted me to "The Wraith" with Charlie Sheen. I was the only person in the theater. Well, out came the cigarette, out came the joint, and the tallboy poptops got popped. We had a ball getting fucked up watching a stupid movie (cool car, tho). The shit we did when we were teenagers and bulletproof
allaboutaphie@reddit
Movies alone are great, not like you are talking during the movie, so sometimes better (gone with peeps that think talking during movie is just fine ughhhh ushhh). I prefer going to the movies alone or with my son because I like him and he knows to hushhh and watch the movie (trained him well lol).
Kristylane@reddit
I do shit by myself all the time. As far as I’m concerned, I’m not at [concert, movie, whatever] by myself, I’m with everyone else at [whatever].
Thirty_Helens_Agree@reddit
Solo matinees are great. I especially like it when it’s a super popular movie where there are early morning matinees - breakfast at a diner, 8:00 a.m. movie.
vagabondizer@reddit (OP)
This one was 10:45. The earliest showing they had. It was kind of funny as the mall doors next to the theater were still locked and I had to go to the main doors.
SIGMONICUS@reddit
My favorite past time
Jane-The_Obscure@reddit
I call these Midday Movies, and they were a staple feature of my week, 2x a month (ish, depending on releases), I would walk down to the local small cinema for the first matinee. Usually me and one or maybe two other people in the theater (once, gloriously, alone). Then COVID hit, and I haven't gotten back into the rhythm. But now I find it hard to go to the movies with another person.
Ecstatic-Skill-4916@reddit
Great movie! I loved the book and the movie. I saw it in a matinee.
vagabondizer@reddit (OP)
I listened to it on Audible when it first came out, which is why I had to see the movie. It was almost like watching ET for the first time as a kid.
Melodic-Movie-3968@reddit
I love going by myself, I rarely go to the movies anymore, but it's my favorite way to see a movie!

I go to the movies alone about once per quarter. Usually its a late show on Monday night. Nice way to relax for a couple of hours.

I go to the movies by myself all the time. (Though sometimes I’ll go with my wife or a friend.) I find being there by myself extremely relaxing and it gives me time to think.
PossumJumpRopeSquad@reddit
When I was in my teens and 20s, I used to feel a bit strange about going by myself. Now, I absolutely love it. It's even better when the theater is actually empty and I'm the only one there.
Lost_Taste_8181@reddit
Love it. I’m at the point now where I go out to breakfast by myself to my favorite diner almost every weekend. I sit at the counter and have the same thing every time. I don’t feel lonely at all.
dreadful_cookies@reddit
Love seeing movies alone at matinee prices, did it as a kid, ditched more than once to sneak into theatres all day.
-Granby-@reddit
I used to go alone all the time. Best way to enjoy the movie. Now though I enjoy going to things like Mario with my wife and daughter cause they like those types of movie. We will all go see Street Fighter when it comes out.
Other than that maybe once a year now I'll go see something alone if it is something I really want to see.
