I’m sure Hyundai has market data that says not to bother importing this to the US, but doesn’t it seem like the sort of thing that a lot of people have been asking for? Smaller, cheaper, decent range for a commuter, all that?
Sandy_Koufax@reddit
Who outside of online forums has been asking for a smaller car? Most people in my experience (as someone who works for a big car company) want the bigger car if the price is the same.
spooksmagee@reddit
People who live in cities where a smaller car is nice to have. Especially cities with subpar transit or other non-car infrastructure.

I do not understand what point you're trying to make here.
PastPalpitationCry@reddit
That people who live in the largest and arguably most dense US city do not buy small cars?
spooksmagee@reddit
And that is why I qualified my earlier comment with cities that have shitty non-driving options.
NYC has arguably the best transit in the country. And their walking and biking isn't far behind. (Really the only thing that kills it is winter.)
I do not think you can extract any larger takeaways from that populace's car buying habits because their car needs are likely different. NYC buyers might favor bigger cars because their trips are out of city hauling people and stuff. Around town they can walk, bike, transit, Uber etc.
One would need to pull data from say the 10 biggest U.S. metro areas to get a better sense of any trends.
PastPalpitationCry@reddit
Ait. Lets take Dallas. Horrible Public Transport, as unfriendly to pedestrians and cyclists as it gets.

spooksmagee@reddit
Texans buy trucks. Water is wet.
But you're probably correct and bigger cars sell better. I still maintain that there would be a big enough market for a smaller EV that would appeal to people who live in denser areas. At least I hope so. I'd certainly buy one.
PastPalpitationCry@reddit
You keep trying to find small contradictions instead of providing a source that proves your claim.
Definitely* correct.
Most people get cars that can transport large goods should the need arise or ones that can safely travel outside the city for a trip.
Minicars are a concept that has failed. No manufacturer should waste time and resources on this idea.

Yikes. Ok. You win. Have a good one.

The average EV respecter seems to be looking for a simple A-to-B commuter that has enough range for their limited city driving and is easy to park in the sort of smaller lots or spaces they encounter on most of their travels. Now that is my perception based on what I’ve read on various places over the years. It’s entirely possible that that subgroup of people is vocal but small and Hyundai’s market research has shown they shouldn’t chase after that market because it’s smaller than it appears.
mgobla@reddit
People are NOT buying what redditors say... They are not even buying what they themselves aks for.
Volvo EX30 was offered in US , americans did not buy it, they stopped importing it.
Take a look at sales numbers of Leaf, C-HR EV, Subaru Uncharted etc.
_FUCKTHENAZIADMINS_@reddit
The Volvo EX30 was cancelled because tariffs raised the price from $35k to $46k after they had to shift production from China to Belgium and then got hit with a 15% tariff anyways.
europeanperson@reddit
Feel like a lot of people would just pay a bit more for the Ioniq 5 for more range, size, power, etc. US has a habit of wanting a step up from the very bottom. For example, we buy way more Sentra than Versa, or Hyundai Kona’s over Venues.
leebenningfield@reddit
I have a Venue right now, the Ioniq 5/6 are simply out of my price range but I'd be lining up for the Ioniq 3 if it was available in the U.S.
biggsteve81@reddit
The Versa has been discontinued for the US market. Apparently tariffs made it unprofitable.
faizimam@reddit
Everyone complains about no EVs under $30k and then rejects cars like this.
mgobla@reddit
This would not be under §30k.
europeanperson@reddit
At the end of the day, people buy what they actually want in their price range, regardless of what they say. The sales don’t lie.
CallLivesMatter@reddit
That’s kind of how I saw it as well. I have no interest in EVs, but lots of other people do, and this seems to be what they’ve been requesting for a few years now.
CallLivesMatter@reddit
I’m certain that this is the conclusion that Hyundai came to as well. It just doesn’t match with what people claim they want, which I fully understand is not the same as what people actually spend their money on.
vw18t@reddit
I could see this coming to Canada Hyundai and Kia in the past imported some models available in Canada but not the US
Alive_Internet@reddit
Makes more sense in Canada. Their salaries are much, much lower than the US, so there is more appetite for affordable cars.
leedle1234@reddit
Everyone forgets there was once a time where you didn't need to beg for mass market imports. If you wanted something foreign you could just import it yourself (and pay applicable fees). local dealers would even service them too.
The EV transition is the perfect opportunity to undo, or at least amend this 4 decade mistake. There's no more EPA emissions guidelines to worry about on EVs, just need to recognize other "first world" auto safety standards.
KyledKat@reddit
I think cheap new EVs are a bad proposition with how many used ones with steep depreciation curves are on the market. A base model Bolt costs as much as a fully loaded Blazer with 10k miles.
CallLivesMatter@reddit
I’m sure that’s part of the reasoning here.
FreeGums@reddit

tiagojpg@reddit

munche@reddit
It's that but also the fact that the US policy shifted right as this car was coming out to be hostile to both EVs and imports
Sandy_Koufax@reddit
We can blame politicians but nobody would want this. You can get a 500e and CooperE but they’re Perry unpopular.
ggtsu_00@reddit
If the 500e was sold at the same price range as a Chevy Bolt, it would be way more popular.
Sandy_Koufax@reddit
And if I had 4 wheels I’d be a wagon.
tiagojpg@reddit
If my grandmother had a’wheels she’d be a bike.
tiagojpg@reddit
The Niro is a compact crossover, the 500 and Cooper are A segment mini hatchbacks - no real comparison here.
The Niro is pretty popular here, they’re amazing little cars and pack a lot of space. The Golf 7 got a 380L boot (trunk) and the Niro is at 450L or ~16 cu. Ft.
cat_prophecy@reddit
It's because the range is pathetic.
kyonkun_denwa@reddit
You can say the same about the regular Cooper. But you don't buy it because it's small and cheap. You buy it because it's a unique Go-Kart experience that isn't really replicated by anything else. It's a cut above your typical subcompact.

It’s this. People like to make fun of the US, but the main reason big cars dominate is because the average American is much wealthier than the average person from any other major country.
xlb250@reddit
I feel space is a big one too. Not just garage space, but also navigating around town. Saw a recent post from BMW subreddit where an M3 couldn’t even fit in a McDonalds parking lot lol.
Blyatskinator@reddit
Lmao are you serious with that post? It’s obviously just classic asshole parking haha, the car would fit if they aimed for the actual parking slots

Suknator@reddit
If you look at the concept and then at this abomination then you won't say it's a modern Veloster
Thomas_633_Mk2@reddit
Idk why you're being downvoted, this thing looks worse than the concept in most ways
stackable_canoes@reddit
I'm not getting Veloster vibes at all. To me it looks like a Kona and a Pontiac Aztec had a baby.
If Hyundai made an Ioniq 5 the size of a Golf it'd be an insta-buy for me. They nailed the retrofuturistic 80's hatch styling on that one.

r/cars keeps having a hard-on for these ugly little hyundai EVs. no one in my large and model-diverse enthusiast group like these (even the Tesla guys), but the minority is always the loudest online i suppose.
SnootDoctor@reddit
I pray we get some version of this car in the United States, be it Hyundai, Kia, or Genesis. This is exactly what I’m looking for as a college student looking to buy my first new car.
I have a 2003 Toyota Matrix XRS, and this is quite similar in size & spirit.
PlatinumElement@reddit
It’s really good looking, but at what point do we hit the point of over saturation of the market with EV crossovers, especially with demand in that segment currently dwindling? (I say this a co-owner of an EV crossover myself.)
dodecohedron@reddit
The writing is on the wall that EVs will eventually overtake ICE vehicles. There are only two demographics who openly refuse EV adoption:
Enthusiasts, who are informed about EVs and, while a minority, choose ICE despite the merits of EVs - fine. They have their reasons.
People who are either uninformed or willfully ignorant about the merits of EVs.
Eventually, it's going to be increasingly difficult for anyone to stay in the dark regarding vehicles that are structurally safer than ICE cars, have better traction control, need fewer moving parts, are quieter, have less vibration, less maintenance, can refuel in your garage and, at some point in the future, will probably be able to achieve more miles between stopping than ICE vehicles.
The market for EV crossovers will eventually be as large as the one for ICE crossovers - and that market is enormous. It is not shrinking in countries that aren't pushing absurd anti-EV legislation.
For now, there are probably many urbanites who want a solidly-built small electric crossover like this. I can throw a rock in los angeles and hit twenty people who want and can afford a small EV. The question is: why would they buy this vs a Leaf or Bolt?
With these ridiculous performance figures, I'm... not sure.
kuroyume_cl@reddit
An N variant could be an actually desireable electric car.
eximius123@reddit
This. I am eyeballing the Ioniq 5N, but I am not super crazy about it's size. A 3N would be perfect if it had similar or better performance than the 5N.
Seeker80@reddit
A 3N would probably handle better due to being lighter. It'll have that going for it, at least.
sigmmakappa@reddit
In my first time ever visiting Europe, I found out that 99% of particular cars on the roads are hatchbacks. I wonder why?
SaddexProductions@reddit
Space. EU cities are generally not built for cars and are space-constrained. Parking tends to come at a premium and smaller cars will be easier to fit in. They also are cheaper and it doesn't matter that much that they are cramped when drives tend to be shorter due to high population density in many parts of Europe.
In northern Europe (Scandinavia), where distances are longer and space is more abundant, bigger cars (C to D segments mostly) are more common.
Froloswaggin@reddit
i like the design language, very sleek and minimalist. it looks like a shorter gimpier ioniq 6 but in a good way(i think). fake shifting was fun in the ioniq 5 n so hopefully this just fills that niche in the segment.
V8-Turbo-Hybrid@reddit
The battery range is pretty good, but performance isn’t impressive. But, it’s still considered a decent number in Europe and most world.
andrewia@reddit
As a car for the city and mixed highway usage it's perfectly fine, my Fiat 500e has the same acceleration. I'm disappointed that the N-Line model doesn't get a power bump and is slower than their gas N-Line models like the Kona 1.6t.
Jabbles22@reddit
Also many people simply don't care about performance.
andrewia@reddit
I understand that for the regular trims, but I'd expect the N-Line to at least keep up with the gas versions.
Oh_ffs_seriously@reddit
N-line (and other trims ending in -line) is just an appearance package. I think Elantra N-line was the only exception, but it never existed in Europe.
andrewia@reddit
The Kona N-Line gets an engine bump to the 1.6t in North America. And our Sonata N-Line gets an absurdly powerful 2.5t engine.
In the UK, the i20 N-Line gets a 120 PS engine tune instead of 90 PS. And in both the UK and EU, the i10 N-Line goes from an NA 1.0/1.2 engine to a turbo 1.0 engine, with 90 PS instead of 63/79 PS.
So they regularly offer beefier engines in N-Line models and only appear back off when emissions regulations prevent a beefier engine .
Oh_ffs_seriously@reddit
You could get i20 with a 120hp engine in multiple trims. N-line is still just a trim with "sporty" styling.
andrewia@reddit
I think we are confused and talking about different model years. In 2022, the i20 UK catalog says "The more powerful 120 PS 1.0 litre T-GDi 48V Mild Hybrid engine – exclusive to N Line and available with either a manual or DCT transmission – ensures you’ll feel the part too, every time you get behind the wheel." It was slightly different in Spain, with the base N-Line being a cosmetic package and a new "N-Line X" trim exclusively having the 120 CV engine. For the 2023/2024 facelift, the 120 PS engine was discontinued for both markets.
So I think N-Line is used differently depending on the market. As emissions restrictions get higher, they turn it into an appearance package. But EVs have no such restrictions and should give a tad more power to justify a sporty package, like Hyundai was doing only 4 years ago.
Oh_ffs_seriously@reddit
No. N and N-line are as different as M cars and BMWs with an M-line trim. It simply is, and always has been, an appearance package/trim riding on the reputation of N cars.
localtuned@reddit
I don't think they are allowed to go fast in most of Europe. /s
Pixelplanet5@reddit
interesting car for sure, the only big problem will be its price which is why its not public yet.
this car is smaller and has less power then my Corolla hybrid so it should be cheaper or at most the same price.
i paid 36000€ for the top level trim with all the features available but i dont see this one being cheaper or the same price.
markeydarkey2@reddit (OP)
This is the sister car to the Kia EV2 which is €26,600+ in Germany, I imagine it'll be priced similarly.
Oh_ffs_seriously@reddit
The base EV2 is a also a four-seater without battery preconditioning.
Pixelplanet5@reddit
and looking at the Kia EV2 that confirms my problem with it.
26.600 is the bare bones base price.
If i try to configure it similar to my Corolla i end up at 41.250€ and its still missing things the Corolla has at that price while also being a lot smaller.
way too expensive for what it is.
ethereal3xp@reddit
EU gets everything
NA gets basic trims
rapid_thunder@reddit
Sucks when a company like Hyundai actually put out heat but then have the market in the US to do so like we only get a couple of Hyundai N performance models whereas other countries gets the full fleet…
realslizzard@reddit
If this had 84kw battery with AWD and 500+ HP I would get one.
I already drive a 5N but would trade in my wife's WRX for this vehicle.
AgisterSinister@reddit
The RN24 prototype repackaged the Ioniq 5N into a body that's about the same size as an Ioniq 3. The underfloor box in the boot (or trunk) would also be ideal for mounting a rear motor.
My guess is that we'll see an N version within the next year or two. My guess is that it'll either use the drive train of the upcoming EV3 GT with a 400 volt battery, or it'll be a more expensive car based around the RN24. Maybe they'll do both.
Prestigious_Pin_4947@reddit
I thought it would be a hot hatch, but the specs on it being FWD with less than 150 HP in both variants is kind of a head scratcher. This seems more like an econobox than an EV Veloster.
HeatDeathIsCool@reddit
It wouldn't even need to be a proper hot hatch. A proper N-line with something like 220HP would be plenty zippy considering how torquey electric cars are. Add in the fact that it has normal door handles and physical controls (though not great ones at first glance) and you'd have a solid electric hatchback for people who want to buy a normal car with an electric drive-train.
Where I live, there are way too many short, uphill on-ramps for me to pay electric car money for a 9s 0-60.
Code_XCIV@reddit
To be fair, the first-gen Veloster only produced 138hp and hovered around the nine-second mark to 60mph like this does. There’s definitely room for an N version to come later.
Thomas_633_Mk2@reddit
Damn. The US is missing out on so much here. I can't imagine how sad you all are. This truly is terrible.
CopperBag@reddit
Honestly if the Hyundai Venue is selling here, I don't see why this wouldn't. I would love a little electric hatchback to putts around in!

Recoil42@reddit
They should be different, as it's a different (somewhat newer) platform.
SojusCalling@reddit
The Inster sometimes had problems with AC charging, but apparently they just released a software update, that's supposed to fix it.
andrewia@reddit
You're thinking of their 800 volt cars. The 400 volt models like the Kona and Niro haven't had the same systemic issues.
faizimam@reddit
Their 400v cars are bulletproof.
Sarah_hussain09@reddit
Nope. 400v non EGMP cars are bulletproof. 400v egmp can have the same issues at 800v but less likely due to the lower voltage putting less strain
localtuned@reddit
I read in another thread the ICCU part is a newer part? But I can't confirm.

I really hate the wheels and the interior screen, but it generally looks like an OK design. It fits in the IONIQ line pretty well, as aa smaller, more affordable step beneath the IONIQ 5.
I've got some qualms with some Hyundai designs, but I think they've overall done a good job with having a design language within the brand. If you like the IONIQ 5 and aren't shopping in that price bracket, the IONIQ 3 seems like a good option. If you got this and had more money to upgrade in the future, the IONIQ 5 is a fitting place to go next.
