We keep waiting for the siren.
Some signal that tells us it's time to take it seriously. A flash on the horizon. A news anchor with a face that says this one is different.
It hasn't come. So most people assume we're fine.
I spent time putting the actual cited numbers next to each other. Not individually, where each one is easy to dismiss. Together.
40% chance of great power war by 2035 (Atlantic Council, 350+ global strategists, 2024). 14% mean probability of AI catastrophe from the researchers who actually build it (AI Impacts, 2,778 researchers, 2023). 27% chance of a pandemic worse than COVID within 10 years (Metabiota, Airfinity). 2.6C of warming locked in under current implemented policy (Climate Action Tracker/IPCC). 40% global recession probability right now (JPMorgan, IMF, 2025).
Probability that none of these occur by 2075: roughly 5%.
That's not Russian roulette. That's a revolver with five chambers loaded and one empty.
The piece also gets personal in a way I think this community will appreciate. Not statistics at arm's length. Actually personal.

You say the whole world's ending, honey, it already did
You're not gonna slow it, Heaven knows you tried
Got it? Good, now get inside"

I'm depressed, alone and self isolated already, why not give this great classic another rewatch. "Twenty thousand years of this, Seven more to go" was talking about 2028
