Have you had your heart broken like this?

I thought it would be fun to play some solitaire on my phone, here I go naively to the app store to find a calming happy old school game that I used to play when I was little with my mom. Get some of that nostalgia in!

I played through my first game, and do you know what happened? NOTHING.

Not a single card bounced down and across the screen. Not one! I did not get the satisfaction of watching the entire deck undo itself in some corny 90s immediately satisfying flurry action.

I just sat there for a few minutes and had to process what just happened, not with the app but with my brain and my soul. How has solitaire given me some kind of pavlovian response?

Have you gotten into spider solitaire at all? One of my favorite games. The online site I use doesn’t give you any celebration of cards wildly shuffling but I do still enjoy it a lot, more than regular solitaire.

Are there any other weirdos out there who play Klondike with actual cards?

I keep a deck of cards nearby at all times, and while I’m honestly more likely to grab for my phone or a book, I have definitely spent a half an hour at a coffee shop playing old school solitaire with physical cards.

On iphone I play Microsoft Solitaire & Casual Games and it has the cascade effect just like it should.

This is the one I play on PC, and yeah, it's the same.

How are the ads on the mobile version? I had to stop playing some of those Microsoft games on PC because it was game, ad, game, ad, like a bad mobile game.

I play a version with my phone in airplane mode. You still get an ad but in airplane mode it's only one static image from the company itself basically saying 'we have OTHER games, you know!' It only lasts a second or two? Or you can just dismiss them.

Airplane mode is such a sanity saver on a variety of levels, really.

The one on mine shows you all the moves you made sped-up, which is a nice consolation prize, even if it's not the same.
