Agreed, but hatches are quite a bit more expensive than trunks, so I'm guessing they determined that most of their customers don't care if it has a hatch. My guess is most of their customers also would be fine paying extra for the hatch on a brand new E Class.
That was my first thought as well. This doesn’t look luxurious at all! It’s just another Camry basically, but with an ugly snout and holy shit that interior screen is RIDICULOUS.
I think more likely they just straight up shared the same front as the electric GLC: https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/a70790815/2027-mercedes-benz-glc400-ev-drive/
It's has DOZENS of "stars" on its interior and exterior design. Such as the headlights, brake lights. LED star on the hideous, afterthought, slapped on grill. Just on the panoramic roof probably hundreds...
Looks like a SUV or CUV. But it's supposed to be a compact sedan. Incongruous design reminds me of the forgettable, recent Toyota Crown.
No real, tactile buttons to be found. Just one, sorry ass layer of touch sensitive "buttons" next to the the big cup holders, which is the center theme of the lower dashboard... Cup holders with LEDs on them. it's the center theme of the lower dashboard.
LEDs galore again... 2018 called, they want them back.
Mercedes used to be a luxury car. A mega, hyper, immersive SCREEN (on a road car 😱☠️), is neither luxury nor classy and much less safe, on a road car.
This pig lookin sum of abitch is more akin to a gaudy looking Louis Vuitton fake purse with all the logos stamped on, so you can remind everyone that you financed a new C class at sub prime.
Quoting Peter from Family Guy this mercedes design in and out : "insists upon itself".... Rant over. I miss my old 1993 500E.
Horrible design on the outside and the inside. Mercedes is so cooked at this point with the abominable touchscreen dashboards. Why would they think something like that is a good idea?
Can we please fast-forward to the part where the entire thing is a screen?
I want this to happen so we can start to walk back the stupidity.
I mean, the driver should be looking out the windshield for the vast majority of time. Passengers are more likely to be messing with their phones or iPads or whatever... so why do we have to put so much effort into fitting displays that are going to become dated very quickly and that offer very little value in terms of function or aesthetics.
Give me a nice, visually clean cabin with nice appointments any day.
This, by the way, outside of the screens does have a beautiful interior.

Its crazy how you think the wagener design language cant devolve any further and here we are again
It looks like a lowered GLC, the front looks like its melting and the black lip gives it a underbite. how do you put out something like this. why is it so bulbous.
One of the biggest issues I have with these giant screens aside from their poor ergonomics is how they fill them up with bright/night-vision ruining images, like the big blue wave as pictured. Presumably there is a way to make it something less visually noisy and distracting, like a black or grey background but that then brings the problem of having this gigantic, ugly wasted space that's introducing glare and reflection where instead there could be wood, or fabric, or literally any other material.
I'm not the target consumer for these type of cars anyways, but that's as much because of the design choices they make more than it is my needs and budget.
I mean at that point the car is just blinding everybody, the occupants, oncoming drivers, drivers in front of you, pedestrians on the road. Actually no, there's still people behind the car who can see, they still need to boost the brightness of the tail lights by a factor of at least 10. I mean if people can't see the light from your car reflecting off the bottoms of the clouds from at least several miles away we might as well be driving in the perfect darkness of a cave.
Effective use of black along the side sills to hide just how tall these EVs are. Hard to tell whether the effect would be as convincing and effective in person but in these press shots at least it does a good job making the dimensions of the car seem much slimmer and more normal than they actually are.
Sure? Not really the same thing though. The proportions on this Merc from the bottom of the black along the bottom sides to the bottom of the windows is significantly more of the car's total height (and I'd bet also actually just a larger stretch of sheet metal) than the equivalent stretch on a Challenger.
Looks better then the EQ line but I’d say it, the new glb ànd GLC look pretty good. The new CLA looks nice too but it’s my least favorite out of the four.
Of course this is the natural evolution of the illuminated emblem. I don't have as much of an issue with this as much as I do that this just opened the door for people to start ricing out their clapped out Hondas by putting on ridiculous light grill kits.
Screen circlejerk aside, i like the design. Hated the front light bar on the CLA, great to see they went with GLC design on the front. Watching the review right now, hope interior quality is just as good.
Speaking of screens, I'm in a new Nissan Kicks for a rental this week for work (actually pretty nice inside for what it is). There's a padded ledge that runs under the dash spanning touchscreen so you can rest your hand on it if you need to as you operate the screen, which makes it a lot easier to hit the right button when you're driving.
That should 100% be a design feature that every one of these giant horizontal screens has, especially if there are no physical climate buttons below. The screen in this C Class looks god awful to actually use.
I’m sure it’s pretty good Ive watched reviews from very wel trusted reviewers and really the notion is that all models 2024 and after had very big improvements in quality and build quality
Really not a fan of the use of LEDs on the front grille. Do we really need more light pollution? Just put some shiny chrome bits underneath something clear there instead of the LEDs. Effect would be similar but much less gauche.
Is this the impact from the mining? Because isn't chrome pretty non-reactive?
I thought manufacturers had moved away from it because it doesn't bond well to plastics and ends up flaking off and they don't want to use metals there instead. Well that and just design/consumer preference trends away from chrome.
It's clear that nothing in their product strategy is tilted at whatever demographic I'm in. I can't think of a single MB model I would buy, like period, not even "compared to the competition".
Their powertrains are poorly engineered, their interiors are low-rent when you actually use the car for longer than a day, and the actual UX of their systems sucks mega ass.
The one exception is the G class, but that's a vehicle made by Magna and MB has at least had the self-awareness to not fuck it up.
There was no ev c class sedan. If your comparing this to the W206 then it’s a bad comparison because both will be on sale at the same due to the W206 being gasoline powered
Oh good. There are 160 illuminated MB stars imbedded into the moonroof. This is the engineering I’ve been welcoming back from this once stoic company.

It's not exactly ugly, but it's also just a mess of a design. The front looks bulbous with that new grille that just doesn't fit modern car lines at all. The headlights look like they're fusing into a BMW 2-Series. The rear looks like a new Chevy Impala concept and I say that as an insult. The unending screen bullshit inside has been talked about to death. I think BMW and Mercedes have both just completely collapsed in the last few years which is a shame because they were rolling out some genuinely beautiful shit not that long ago (Z4, AMG GT, G20 (biased, obviously), W222 S-Class, current X5, among others).
I think the grill size isn’t good for the c class although it looks good on the GLC. I think the rear looks a bit stubby from the side but it’s probably just because it has a coupe design to it. This new design lanaguage theyve adopted has been making their EV’s sell likr hotcakes so even though a lot of enthuasits don’t sit well with it, I think due to the majority of consumers ànd a lot of other enthuasits sitting well with it and even for some therfore buying it, that theyll just continue on in this direction.
It's the same mistake BMW made with the vertical grilles. They actually were workable on the bigger SUVs, but applying them to the sedans was a mistake. And I think splitting the difference with the iX3 by sort of having the vertical grilles is actually even worse, but that's another topic.
Yeah I think they should’ve lessened the elongation of the grill for the c class or made other parts of the front accompany it more appealing like.
Hopefully the ev e class doesnt have the same issue with the ev gle, whenever the ev gle comes out. I wonder how different the design of the ev e class will be to the c class because spyshots show it has a very box design to it. Three box design too. Reminds me of the W212.
I see they've joined in on the Chinese trend of having a two-tier center console with nothing but a row of buttons, some wireless charging pad and some cup holders on the top level, and a storage area underneath.
It looks clean, sure, but also devoid of any character.
