Found a Model M in the E-waste

Hey all! I just pulled an old Model M out of the local E-waste bin. I have no experience with this thing, I just knew of it existence. In general it seems like it's in good condition from the outside, it doesn't look yellowed, and there are no cracks, and it has the PS/ 2 cable. Can you guys tell me more about this thing? What is it worth, and how do I clean it? (of possible due to it's age, I don't know how brittle the plastics are). Thanks!

Happy for you 😡 Just kidding. I would love to run into one of these.

I suspect most of the the true blue model M's still out there were essentially trash picked at one point. Piles of the them used to be a common sight in thrift shops back when all the old PS/2's were getting scrapped.
The plastic on these keyboards seems pretty hardy. I think just going outside, turning the keyboard upside down, and brushing crud out with a dry tooth brush would go a long way. After that you could touch up with an air duster and a damp cloth.
Model M's are quality keyboards. If it works, it should be worth as least $50. You'll need a good usb converter to use it on most modern computers. Most converters are junk, unfortunately.

I use this one. https://github.com/NilsFC/Model-X/tree/main. Works great!

A model M is my daily driver. Best keyboard ever. I have replaced the controller board for one with usb-c and Bluetooth.

One of the most PC keyboards ever, no modern scam keyboard can replace its feel. Shame it was in the e-waste, great that you found it.

I will never understand why people are still dumping these
prosper_0@reddit
because they were made by the kajillions, attached to (then) boring old office equipment, are incompatible with modern computers without adapters, because they're missing keys that are not commonly used, and because the clacky-clack is neat for an hour or so, then becomes horribly obnoxious.
Outside of a very specific and narrow slice of people, they are just e-waste.

And if you actually spend time typing on them they make your fingers hurt
OneWeirdTrick@reddit
Yeah but don't dump it, sell it :)

I know there was a suburban station near Paris called IBM too. Been renamed since they sold the memory factory donkeys years ago!

Nice! I'm typing this on one that I found in a streetside free box about 10 years ago. Mine was just missing the F9 keycap.

Swoon!

I adore the Model M, but I also adore function keys for audio, brightness, etc.

Nice find! Growing up I had a very similar one except the main Enter key was a big backwards "L" shape. Good memories!

I have an M2. It’s beautiful and the action is so satisfying, but unfortunately I think I fried it
Simmo2222@reddit
I can hear that from here.
Jasebase87@reddit
model m in that condition is kinda wild, especially not yellowed… that’s a score
No-Succotash-9576@reddit
they don't ever yellow because of the type of plastic they are made from
