Today's generation

Why do young people today seem so awkward and unpleasant to be around? When I was growing up we were exciting, creative and we actually smiled. There was no such thing as "resting bitch face". There was only a "you just messed with the wrong one face".

Eh, I find that, like us, it varies by individual. Some of my kid’s friends are ill mannered and poorly socialized, and some are awesome and fun.

I think it's because now we're the old folks the younger people aren't sure how to act around. We had different names for it but resting bitch face has always been a thing

I was (okay still am) awkward, an introvert, and I definitely vibe on a different level than most. I was born with resting bitch face and at times I was very unpleasant to be around. I’m in menopause so I can still be unpleasant to be around.

Way too many folks sounding like Boomers in here lately.

I feel the same. Every time I see a bunch of young people I get irritated.
But that is often my problem, and not theirs.
I…am trying to build patience and empathy…..

I finally got over myself and remembered what it was like being young. I was trying to figure out who I was and where I fit into this world. Sometimes that can be messy. It changed my stance on judging so harshly against children just trying to do the same thing in a much tougher time.✌️

I disagree with most of those statements.

59/M, I was awkward and shy well into my 20's, and people didn't know what to think about me because I rarely smiled. I've fixed that over time, I still have awkward moments for various reasons.
I'm beginning to think that we've all concocted some fun fictions about life growing up, and that it's a common trait in older folks, regardless of generation.

They seem awkward and unpleasant to be around because you're the old person now.
We didn't have the term "resting bitch face" but the phenomenon sure as hell existed.
But unlike the youth of today, we saw possibilities in our future. Things were good. The economy was solid. Politics were not as crazy as they are now. It did not feel like we're moments away from imploding. We had options.

Speak for yourself. I'm 59 and have had resting bitch face for as long as I can remember.
666ForMySorrow@reddit
Me too, and often active bitch face as well.

I feel like this is an age old issue. The older generation always bitches about the younger generation. Older people did indeed bitch about us when were the young generation.

Yeah my parents said I talked too much.

Speak for yourself. When I was a kid I was terribly shy and awkward as hell around people I didn’t know well.

Gen x-er too. How much (all adjusted for inflation) did entry level jobs pay? How much did it take to pay for college? How much was a first house?
bigkat5000@reddit
Young people don't look you in the eye, nor do they annunciate their words. Just mumble staring at their shoes.
Rambling-Holiday1998@reddit
I've met a lot of boomers and genx that do this too.
finally-free2173@reddit
Where did you grow up where everyone was exciting, creative, and smiling. We hung out at the mall and smoked cigs.
Rambling-Holiday1998@reddit
You had a mall? We only had the cigarettes!
SheikhIssa@reddit
Judging by your old man post, you were neither exciting nor creative, but were likely a douche.
Rambling-Holiday1998@reddit
You had a very different growing up experience than I did. I do not remember us being all that. We did not have the term "resting bitch face" but we were often a pretty sullen lot.

I grew up in the rural south 70s and 80s. We had skaters, grunge, preps and burnouts. It was a blast!

IDK - My GenZ kids are polite, happy, and kinda hilarious, as are their friends. Their modern humor actually clicks very well with my GenX sensibilities.
Hot_Assistant_6067@reddit
Idk I’m a Gen Zer all my friends are pleasant to be around I rly only have 6 friends from high school and College wise I have 2 we hangout
But if someone is being a complete asshole towards me I’ll just treat them like trash back to me eye for an eye makes the world go right. Like sorry majority of ppl are ass hats

When I was a kid plenty of us were awkward, living in troubled homes and/or had some form of neurodivergence that was virtually unknown at the time and bullying was socially acceptable.
cl8855@reddit
You have selective memory for sure, but a lot of it is growing up with social media
