The games idiosyncratic difficulty didn't help. It goes from baby handhold time during the main story worlds to the non-stop assrape that are the bonus levels
Sure, I don't think 3D Land is anyone's favorite, but it's one of those entries that you can't hate. Like NSMB 2 and WiiU, it's an example of how they're fun even when they're not stellar or innovating.
Personally, I'm still on team Sunshine for black sheep. As the first 3D game after 64, it was the one to refine the (excusably) clunky 3D movement of the plumber himself to work well... but I just don't like FLUDD and the way it has to be used. I dropped it when I got to that roller coaster boss; damn backpack is just so unwieldy for me that I didn't want to keep playing.

Mario might be the most overrated franchise of all time.
Trick-Caramel-6156@reddit
Nah pokemon is even more overrated then mario
Ciclopotis@reddit
That might be because Pokémon is the biggest video-game franchise of all time, but I'd still say Mario is more overrated.

Some Great titles of you don't include the 3d ones

Monster hunter exists.

Because it bought the cheap soullessness of the “new” sidescrollers to 3D. The Zelda level is a cool idea though.

3D world is my favourite Mario game. I think it shares more with 2D Mario games than 3D ones in terms of the rules

Blud I 100%'ed that game as a 12 year old. Quit crying.

That one level where the platforms are blue and red and switch tangibility based on some erratic beat fucked me up so hard
Chosenwaffle@reddit
The erratic beat in question:
"boom boom boom tick... boom boom boom tick"
BtownBlues@reddit
It def got faster and reverses itself randomly throughout the stage
